Happy Saturday. There's nothing like a busy first-week of school to
help you appreciate a quiet Saturday. We don't have one thing planned.
    Except another giveaway.

For today's giveaway, my friends at Martha Stewart are offering the winner their fun new book Favorite Crafts for Kids. This isn't a small, 24-project book. But, everything the Martha Stewart company creates is absolutely lovely. I'm sure that Favorite Crafts for Kids is no exceptio

And Potter Craft makes beautiful, beautiful books. I met with them at Random House in New York City on this trip.
I thought I was having lunch with one person and found myself in a
board room with a whole team. The same team that brings us this playful
new book from Martha. That's another untold story. A positive one.

My Charlotte is wildly into crafts
and I'm excited to see what she does with Martha's big book of ideas.

holiday gifts or add it to your personal library for rainy-day
    inspiration. A $25 value.

Comment to enter today's contest. Be sure to include your email

    PatrioticPearPincushion_HeatherBailey

A rambling hello and a Happy 4th of July to you.

I love me a holiday. I don't always take the day off, but knowing that I could is a relief on its own.

PatrioticCowboyT2 Today, my day is a mix. So far, I've flitted between shopping with Charlotte for sillybands, managing a play date with cousins, washing the laundry, photographing a pattern cover, sketching aprons and prepping to-do lists for the week. In another hour we head to Granny's house for a swim party and food, then out for fireworks.

A simple celebration works for me — especially in this heat, with this belly. These days I get winded just walking up the stairs. I tell myself it's a heat/pregnancy/blood-volume thing. It couldn't possibly be my fitness level. I plan to sit. And sip. And sit. It is HOT out there.

    * * * * *

If you haven't heard, there's a patriotic pack of Trash Ties™ posted in our shop till Labor Day — with a FREEBIE offer good till July 15th (see latest newsletter). And long Trash Ties are BACK! And on super sale. Just sayin.

  • Spilling the Bean

BigSisterShirtW A lot of my family lives nearby. So, when the time came to let everyone in on our baby news, I let my kids concoct a plan for spilling the beans. Charlotte and Elijah discussed their ideas for several days before deciding their scheme.

    This was the plan:

Elijah was to make Charlotte a “Big Sister” shirt to wear at the Mother’s Day party, after the swimming was done. Very curious. Charlotte was to draw up a mysterious note for Granny announcing our news. The note would distract Granny from noticing the “Big Sister” shirt at first.

Then, when Granny looked up after reading her note, any confusion would be quickly dispelled when she saw Charlotte’s shirt. Charlotte, a big sister?

In the end, the reveal went down perfectly as planned. Though I think the giggling may have given away as much as the tee shirt and the creatively-spelled letter did. While Granny was reading, my older brother Matt said, “Hey Charlotte, what’s up with your shirt?” It wasn’t long before the whole crew caught on. Mystery solved. Like a good episode of Scooby Doo.

    BabyNewsA

Here is Charlotte’s note. On the envelope is a picture of Red Riding Hood on her way to Granny’s house with an idea to share. Awesome. The note inside translates to, “This is how many people are in my family — 5. No really. I love you Granny, so much.”

    BabyNewsB

Elijah made the purple “Big Sister” shirt by himself. (I had made a similar shirt for him to wear when he met Charlotte in the hospital for the first time. I’ll try to track down the photos. He was very proud of that shirt.)

It’s a miracle my leather couch is still intact. My mom stopped by the afternoon Elijah was prepping the letters, so he ran upstairs to finish his work without her glimpsing it. Later, I discovered him kneeling in front of the couch, running sharp scissors along the smooth leather cushions to cut out each letter. “Whoa, hey, what’s going on up here!?” To his credit, he was properly penitent. I think he said something like, “You’re right. What was I thinking?” Or did he argue first? I can’t remember.

It was fun to watch these kids hatch out a plan together. I figure they are old enough to remember a lot of this experience — why not get them involved. A 14-year-old, a 6-year-old, and a newborn. It’s going to be an interesting dynamic.

Oh! I have to tell you Elijah’s response when we first told him about the baby. This is classic — especially considering his age and his commensurate understanding of the subject. I asked him how he felt about the news and he replied, “I’m surprised… I’m excited… And I’m a bit alarmed.”

  • The Creative Connection

I'm in Minneapolis, MN for The Creative Connection this week.  What
an amazing crowd of bloggers and business women!  All brought together
by Nancy Soriano, Jo Packham, and their fantastic friends and staff.

    1008_PortraitofMomIt
is an honor to be invited as a speaker and panelist. They have put
together a perfect schedule of business-fodder, food, and fun, along
    with an impressive Handmade Market.

    The event kicks off tomorrow
morning with a variety of classes for the attendees. At lunchtime, The
    Pioneer Woman
, Ree Drummond, will join in for some Q & A. Then MaryJane Butters and Amy Butler will speak at the kick-off
dinner.  I have an autograph party tomorrow night and two panels on
Friday, centered on business development, with some meals and meetings
in there as well. Saturday morning I'm listening in on another panel,
then heading back home.  It's a full schedule.

    I can't wait.

(It looks like the bio and pig-tailed photo of me on the Creative Connection site
are both several years out-of-date. Oops. (No, I'm not introducing my
first line of fabric this year.) Here's a more up-to-date portrait courtesy of Charlotte.)

  • Happy Memorial Day

    Feltstar300aHappy Memorial Day, Americani!

    I'm feeling
appropriately patriotic.  If you have a chance to watch The Story of Us series on the History Channel, do.
I've watched several episodes over the last two days.  It's had me
choked up on more than one occasion — the struggles and triumphs of our
country's past (and present).  The series is intelligently paced.  It
ties in the technological advancements of each era as well, and shows
their impact on historical events.  It's just good.

    So now LA
    Ink
    is on while I type.  I go high-brow, I go low-brow.  I'm
strangely relating to this episode.  The main tattoo chick is
interviewing for two new employees while absorbing their duties in the
meantime. I'm hiring for two positions right now too.  Sorting through
resumes took an entire day by itself.  Tattoo chick, I feel you.

    I'm
not too busy to celebrate Memorial Day though!  The BBQ brigade is
coming to our house today.  We have a new backyard to christen, after
all.  And it's gorgeous out.  For now.

    Hug a
soldier, hug a veteran, hug the free earth beneath your feet!

    God
    bless America.

  • Have you Herd?

Make a new friend in Henrietta turtle (or skip the flower corsage and
make a Henry turtle). Henrietta will gladly house your pins &
needles or entertain your baby or pet — but not at the same time. She's funny that way.

    HenriettaCvr

You may have glimpsed my pokey new sewing buddy in my recent interview
on NBC. This sewing pattern is hot off the press and ready to ship. I'm
in love. Sitting by my sewing machine, Henrietta reminds me to take my
    time and enjoy the process.

Fresh from Bingo night, come Edna, Matilda, Eloise, Harriet, Penelope and Gladys. "Shush, dearie. Did that nice young man call B-15?" Six different materials kits available herepattern sold separately.

A herd of turtles. Or as my dad likes to say, "A terd of hurtles."

    Not
all witches have time to concoct a full spread of Harry Potter recipes,
especially if they are short a house elf or two!  So for those of you
who would like to delve into the world of Harry Potter without the
    chocolate-dipping and butterbeer-mixing, I've searched out a few
    easily-accessible, store-bought options for you.

    ChocolateFrogs470

    Lemon
Drops, Chocolate Frogs, and Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans are my top
choices for store-bought, trolley-worthy treats.  They can be enjoyed
by first years and ministry wizards alike.  Honestly, I can't believe I
found chocolate frogs with so little searching.  (See 'Where to Buy'
    list below.)

Another non-alcoholic beverage option includes Lemon Drop Soda.  Mix 2 parts sparkling water with 1 part Stirrings brand Lemon Drop Mixer, and give that Dumbledore a toast.

    If
you prefer a lighter soda, reduce the Lemon Drop Mixer to your liking.
Isaac swears by the addition of a tablespoon of vanilla flavoring syrup.

    LemonDropSoda300wWhere to Buy
    • Old-fashioned lemon drops – Pier One Imports.
    • Chocolate Frogs – Pier One Imports or mold your own chocolate frogs.
    • Every Flavor Beans – Jelly Belly brand
jelly beans – your local grocer — or for an authentic Bertie Bott's
mix, including nasty flavors, such as vomit & ear wax, here are a
    few links: one, two, three.
Stirrings brand Lemon Drop Mixer — spotted this week at Pier One, World Market, and SuperTarget, or purchase online.
    • Sparkling Water or Club Soda – your local grocer.

    Now
take your sugar high and do something good with it, like treat your
kids to a movie or some broom-crafting, then come back home and crash-out. That's the way the sugar goes. I have some experience with this
    now.

Next week, I'm off the broomstick, cauldron-less, and
back in Little Winging, I swear.  Have a great weekend Harry Potter
fans — don't forget to brush your teeth.
