Survival Gear

WildernessSurvival-5e
Isaac and Elijah
have been at Boy Scouts Camp this week.  Isaac is there to teach
Wilderness Survival.  Elijah is there to survive.  And have fun.

WildSurv-7c There isn't much
budget for outfitting the boys with survival gear, so Isaac has been
mighty resourceful.  One of the projects the boys are working on is this emergency kit.  It is made from two square pieces of metal flashing.
Duct tape covers the sharp edges and creates the spine of the booklet
design.  The highly-reflective mirror-like tape on the outside is for
emergency signaling.  On the inside of the kit are fishing hooks,
weights, fishing line, wire, safety pins, crazy-strong thread, and
needles.  The kit closes into a compact and is kept shut by
a strip of hair-band elastic that has been riveted to one side of the flashing.

And
it's orange, so they won't lose it.

It was my opinion that they
should close the kits with complete, un-cut hair-band elastics.  That
way, if a boy is stuck surviving for weeks in the woods, he will have
something to tie his wild-child hair back with.  But, ah well.

It's a several-part class he's teaching, so there are other projects
too, as well as gobs of survival information — Isaac is really into
this subject — and an overnight survival camp-out where the boys have
to build their own shelter and whatnot.

Today I find out whether
Elijah survived or not.  My campers return this afternoon.

  1. Great idea! My son goes to scout camp in July, this will be the first time he is gone for a week without all of us!
We love the scout program it teaches my boys SO MANY THINGS!

  2. I was my older son’s den leader when he was in Cub Scouts and this emergency kit is a great idea! I hope I can remember it when my younger son is a Scout!

  3. My husband was in the scouts & he always said he put a chicken bullion cube inside his survival kit. If he couldn’t catch anything to eat, at least he could make some broth to schlurp!

  4. That is awesome. I hope Elijah goes all the way to Eagle Scout. It is well worth it. I have three Eagle Scouts and one currently working on his Eagle Scout project! My boys have a life time of wonderful experiences and memories from boy scouts.

  5. Un-cut hair-band elastics are definitely part of my survival kit! Isaac did a great job. I hope the boys enjoy it.

  6. There’s nothing we can’t do with a hair elastic and some gaffa tape! Thanks so much for popping in to see me? Are you Primping Your Ride with me? Lots of love, Amanda xxx

  10. Hi, First time posting on your blog. I’ve vistited a few times, really like your projects and designs ;)usually i’m more of a viewer than poster but couldn’t help but post my comments on this project. My boys just left for camp and I wish they had seen this before they left. What a great idea! Not only can this be a recycle project but they can make it all themselves. How empowered they would feel with one of these in their pack/pocket outdoors! What a creative and purposefull project!
