Be-Spangled

There's been a lot of corn on the cob and swimming this weekend —
dental floss and sunscreen.  (Somehow, in there, I completed the
illustrations for another sewing pattern too.)

America

Happy Fourth to the U.S. Let's hold tight to our freedoms.  Educate
yourself (real, balanced, self-directed education — not spoon-fed.)
Speak up when needed and don't just wait for election time.  That's not
loud enough.  Fit it in.

And God bless the troops.  I don't know how they do it — super powers?

Fourth of July 2009

I'm grateful for the principles upon which this country was founded.  A favorite book of Isaac's, John Adams, was mentioned at election-time last year.  I've decided it will be my next read.  I know right where it is.

And, check out that sparkler of a hairdo Isaac did for Charlotte.  A daddy 'do.  I don't think I've ever wrapped three different colors in one motion.  Impressive.  Yep, I wasn't even in the room.

Next
up, pattern testing/editing.  Today I'm taking 20 nickels to the
nearest wishing well to wish for a skilled seamstress/writer to move in
next door.  I hear there's a magic fountain at the mall, right below
the escalator.

  1. Hey Heather,
I would love to live next door!
I am about to move to the US (currently live in Australia) but i think we are going to Nashville… probably no where near you!

  2. Wish I lived next door. If I may say so myself, sounds like you are describing me as your new neighbor! And, boy, would I love the work! Love the do and am so grateful for your thoughts on educating oneself. Just this morning, as I am preparing to teach, I am thinking of creating new knowledge. My classes are moving into the research component of this summer’s session and the hardest part is to get students to think for the themselves. I push and push and am often accused of making their brains hurt, but that is okay if they are thinking and creating new knowledge. Thank you! And, I could be a virtual neighbor you know…:) ~Kelly

  3. if you need a pattern tester, i would love to do it for you, you can email me. i have been reading your blog for quite some time. glad you had a great weekend!!

  4. I wish I was your neighbor!!! Want to move to north Arkansas??? LOL
I enjoy reading your blog and would love to help you if I could. You can email me via my blog if you want.
    Keep up the good work.

  5. I was born in the town John Adams had his house, and its funny I never really knew much about him until the HBO special eventhough I bought the same book. It seems I never have time to read so I ended up watching the special instead.
Its funny but if you live in a place full of history you sometimes forget how important it all was. My grandmother grew up in Concord, MA and we spent many days hanging out there as kids, and living so close to Plymouth rock as I kid you kind of take for granted all the hardship people had to endure to make this country what it is.
I try as often as I can to point out to my kids how amazing it is to live in a state that is the birthplace of our country and how hard the people worked to make it a free one. Maybe one day they will understand it all.
I hope you had a great 4th weekend- since we finally got sun here in MA we did! its been raining so much I forgot what summer was like!

  6. John Adams was wonderful! I love the book and his wife was so amazing herself. It is an inspiring read. I have the audio and it is a good one because it is read by Edward Herman.

  7. WOW and double WOWIE~ Isacc is soooo good at hair! That is great. I would love it if my husband were good at hair – especially on Sunday mornings when alot of church hair is needing to be done.

  8. heather, I’d love to offer any help you need with patterns…jut give me a holler! Also, you might add 1776 to your reading list too if you haven’t read it yet.

  9. Well, I am not the lady your looking for but it would be cool to have a neighbor names Heather! I am glad to know that you had an enjoyable 4th of July celebration…God bless the USA!!!

  10. Hello, not next door, but a more than willing pattern tester right here in the heartland. I’ve sewn garments for nearly 30 years and been quilting for about fifteen. I also make softies, etc. And I have written patterns and edited them for one of our major magazines…

  11. wow! Impressive Daddy hair-do! I don’t think I could do so well! Yes, I think you would get lots of volunteers to live next door and pattern test for you! 🙂

  12. I loved the John Adams book. I learned so much from it (Jefferson, Paris, Holland…who knew?!). Still trying to dig my teeth into 1776 but my brain can only handle the Twilight series right now (sad I know).
Yay for Isaac and his nimble Trash Ties moves!

  13. Thank you for being patriotic and saying what you said. We need more people to speak up and get things back to Freedom and John Adams style American government. I haven’t read the book, but the miniseries was very good.

  14. I think Isaac did an amazing job with the hair! There is no way my husband could ever do anything like that lol…The only skilled seamstress I know is my mom. How I WISH she lived next to you! LOL!

  15. Heather,
Charlotte looks so grown up. What beautiful eyes she has. You will love JOHN ADAMS….it is a great book about a very good man. He was a far better President then the history books say.
Hope all is well with you and Isaac and Elijah and Ms Charlotte. I hope you will make it up to Vancouver sometime soon.
    Love

  16. What a great do! Thanks for the reminder that we can educate our selves and we don’t/shouldn’t be spoon fed. I would love to be a pattern tester for you! Just email me if you need one.

  17. I’d love to test your patterns! I completely enjoy your blog and have followed it for awhile.
I think I need to break down and buy some of those trash ties…they look like they would stay in my daughter’s hair really well and what fun!

  18. I’m so impressed with the Daddy Do – go Isaac!
Happy to hear your holiday weekend was great and that you got a little relaxing in there somewhere 🙂
I’m going to go see if the Trash Ties come in my girl’s team colours!

  19. So I’d be a good pattern tester! Check with Gina, I am a frequent buyer..er, hm, flyer at her new shop. And I posted my version of your stacking ring on the flickr site a few months ago. But not next store I’m afraid.
And go Daddy! Wow, I am impressed.

  20. Yet another offer here to test patterns for you! I do a LOT of sewing: clothes, quilts, toys, bags, etc. I adore your fabrics and have been reading your blog for over a year. I photograph a lot of what I make, but I’m now reminded that I need to update my Flickr account. Feel free to contact me if you want.
By the way, I am SO impressed with Isaac’s work on Charolette’s hair! What a talented daddy! If my hubby attempted something on my daughter, I think it would look like it was meant for a circus act, lol!

  21. Wow! Seems like everyone tests patterns! I loved your post. You are such a great writer and Charlotte’s hair is double wow!

  22. I got a giggle out of the fact that there are so many of us who would love to be your neighbor! I’m one of the many – but I don’t think my husband really wants to move. I am used to working with people over a distance though, so if you are interested in a pattern tester from the Oregon coast feel free to call on me!

  23. I live in Ahwatukee (nearly next door) and would love to test your patterns. Let me know if I can help. 🙂

  24. Whew! How many people would jump at the chance to test your patterns??!! I live in Chandler…I am an experienced seamstress…and as of 1 hour and 30 minures ago…am unemployed for (at least) the next 4 months! I’ll be testing A LOT of patterns in the next few months – would love to test some of yours!

  25. Beautiful photos as always Heather. 🙂 I have been trying to find something new to read and I think I will try John Adams. I hear it is a great book. I watched a series about Presidents on the History channel on the 4th and it was very interesting (and sad) how much things have changed since the founding of this country. We do have to get up and let our voices be heard..after all it is “We the people” not we the government.
Ok, stepping down from my soapbox now…great do by the way (had to end things on a lighter note! )
Oh and I got my new site up and running. 🙂
