You Scream, Ice Cream

"Ice cream is exquisite.  What a pity it isn’t illegal"
Voltaire (1694-1788)

Strawberryicecream
Summer.  Where we live, summer is indoor-season, just as winter is for so many others.  It is hot!

We have a Father’s Day tradition of making homemade ice cream.
Breakfast for Mother’s Day.  Ice cream for Father’s Day.  A couple of
years back I decided to create an ice cream recipe from my favorite
childhood dessert — Strawberry Pretzel Dessert — or that’s what my
mom called it.  Huge success!  The mere fact that I love this ice cream
as much as any chocolatey ice cream speaks worlds of it.  I think it’s
those salty pretzels in there (they’re candied too).

One year we invented Pumpkin Cockroach Cluster ice cream in honor of
the latest Harry Potter release.  Candied pecan clusters for
cockroaches.  Yummy.  But, no where near as remarkable as my Strawberry
Pretzel Dessert ice cream.

If you’re new to homemade ice cream, don’t be intimidated.  You won’t
believe how straight- forward & easy it is to use an electric ice
cream maker.  Your ice cream ingredients go in a metal cylinder that
fits down into a bucket you fill with layers of ice & salt.  A
paddle is inserted into the cylinder, then a motor fits onto the top.  The motor spins the cylinder around and around in the bucket, mixing
the ice cream with the paddle and chilling the mixture until it’s at a
soft-serve consistency.  When the ice cream hits this stage, our
machine turns off (it’s designed to).  We then mix in the remaining
ingredients & freeze the container over night.

Ice cream machines come in different sizes.  Ours is 4 quarts, I
believe, and I picked it up at Walmart for $25-$30 a few years back.
They may be seasonal items though, so don’t assume you can find one at
Christmastime.  The salt can be found in the baking aisle usually, or
on display with the ice cream makers.  It’s a coarse, gray salt usually
labeled as "Ice Cream Salt" or "Rock Salt."

That about summarizes the technical stuff.  Read your ice cream machine’s own instruction manual for more specific info.

Onto the fun part.  Check out these recipe cards.  I must have
needed a work break, cuz I had perhaps too much fun with these.  I
designed the Vanilla Ice Cream recipe card in the style of an
old-fashioned ice cream container.  And the Strawberry Pretzel Dessert
ingredients are on the the floral card.

Click here to download the print-ready pdf.  It’s a two-page
document.  Print one side onto cardstock, then flip the sheet over
& print the stripes on the back.  Then cut out the recipe cards,
using the crop marks on the front as cutting guides.  The printed area
that extends beyond the crop marks is called ‘bleed.’  It’s meant to be
cut off.  Laminate, if you like.

Once you’re familiar with the general ice-cream-making process here,
you can get creative & come up with your own crazy ice cream
concoctions.  My Vanilla Ice Cream recipe makes a great base for all
sorts of experimentation.  I’m wanting to see what I can do with
brownie mix next time.  And wouldn’t it be neat to make a batch of ice
cream as a birthday present — in a flavor that’s specific to the
person you’re celebrating.

Speaking of, I need to do some research on lactose-free ice cream
for my younger brother.  He’s been missing out on ice cream for a few
years now.  I’m going to fix that for him.  "For you, this year, I give
the gift of… ice cream."

What are some original ice cream combos you’re dreaming of?  Like I said, it’s mighty hot here.

  1. This looks so yummy! Thanks! Cute cards too!! I like making aomething a tradition, I want to start a little tradition on a celebration day too! Now let’s see which day and what tradition!

  2. mmm….I’ve been dreaming up a blueberry coconut ice cream. Dunno why but always thought that would taste good (as well as lemon blueberry with graham crust pieces). I just keep eating the blueberries before I can get to ice cream making. I can’t wait to try the strawberry pretzel though! YUM.

  3. Thanks for sharing the cards are super cute and I can’t wait to try the recipes.
For me growing up in the South homemade peach ice cream just ment it was summer. Having said that what I am dreaming of is a Banana, Peanut butter, Chocolate ice cream….it is my favorite combo for a smoothie in the morning. I use Chocolate Silk, banana, peanut butter and a few ice cubes.

  4. One time, in Kuaui, I had the most amazing ice cream combo at Lappert’s. I nearly passed out after eating it. I have tried to replicate and this is what I made: cocnut ice cream with shredded coconut, mini-chocolate chips, banana, and chopped macadamia nuts. It was delicious!

  5. Ohhhhh. Yummy. Thank you for this lovely treat and the beautiful recipe cards. Love,Love,Love it!!!!!!!! Strawberry Pretzel Ice Cream will surely be on next weekend’s dessert menu. Lovely.

  6. Very cute cards. I need to dust of my ice cream maker, the best wedding gift I didn’t register for.
sadly I only bring it out a couple times a year. At Christmas, for my favorite peppermint ice cream. And then once in the summer when I remember it’s the perfect time for homemade ice cream.

  7. mmmm YUM! it’s recipes like this that have been making me crave an ice cream maker for the last two months!!! i’ve been buying fresh strawberries each week, and every time i make a trip to target i pick an ice cream maker up, then inevitably put it back down…vicious cycle! my kitchen cabinets are filled as it is!

  8. Yummy! For your brother: Trader Joe’s has just begun carrying a brand called Soy Creamy (which in Spanish translates to I’m Creamy, ew). I devoured the better part of a chocolate cherry half-gallon over the weekend. Very tasty!

  9. I make completly dairy and soy free ice cream for my son with food allergies. The product is Rich’s Whip. I can find it at Wegman’s periodically in 2 cup containers in the freezer section but I usually get a case from a local food supplier. (I use this for EVERTHING) The ice cream ends up tasting like Breyers, it’s super creamy with no after taste. (I have a think with artifical sweetners, we don’t get along).
2 Cups Coffee Rich-Contains soy but if he is only avoiding Lactose, should be fine and you can get this at any grocery store in the freezer section by the waffles and breakfast stuff.
    2 Cups Rich’s Whip
    1 Teaspoon Vanilla
    1/8 Teaspoon Salt
    1 Cup Super Fine Sugar
    Follow Manufactor Directions for machine.
This is my base and then I add other flavors depending on how we are feeling. Strawberries are great in this and I let it sit in the fridge for about an hour before putting it in the machine. I’ve put instant-decaf-coffee with leftover brownies or cookies. I just made cookie dough ice cream by mixing the dough with only the good stuff-butter, vanilla, sugar, flour and choco chips and then froze them overnight before adding them to the mix in the last five minutes.
Good Luck and if you find any ice cream cartons let me know, I want to find a cute way to package it so it looks like it’s from the store on days when the ice cream trucks comes to my son’s preschool. kck182@comcast.net

  10. Moonmist ice cream. You can’t go wrong with it!! I have yet to see it in the States. It is lovely to look at as well as taste. For the look; think Neapolitan ice cream except with the colours yellow, purple and turquoise (all soft). Taste wise…banana, grape and bubblegum all in one and it is pure heaven.

  11. You can make anything look delicious!
I can’t own an icecream maker… just like I can’t go near the icecream isle, or I’ll eat til I’m sick! Its a bigger weakness for me than chocolate. Unless its chocolate icecream and then I really am doomed 🙂
    ENJOY!!

  12. My uncle makes ice cream for us on the 4th of July, and it’s always strawberry with a little bit of pink lemonade concentrate in it — very delicious! LOVE your recipe cards, thanks for sharing!!

  13. Heather,
Love your new fabric line and your pin cushions! These are amazingly fabulous. I adore that they remind me of the beautiful vintage fabrics from the fifties and I can’t wait to get my hands on them!
Also, I adore your strawberry pretzel dessert ice cream. My husband is an ice cream lover, and I’ve been wanting to ge thim a new ice cream maker this summer. So this is a perfect first recipe!

  14. That strawberry pretzel ice cream sounds so amazing. Thanks for sharing the recipe and with cute recipe cards too! Can’t wait to try it out.

  15. love the recipe & cute cards Thank you – now I just need to buy an ice cream maker- YAY!
as for the recipe with brownies, I like to add brownies with coffee ice cream it taste yummmmy 🙂

  16. Beautifully designed recipe cards, Heather – and boy oh boy does the ice cream recipe with pretzels sound yummy!!!!
As for a flavor I’d like to try, how about cherries with white chocolate chip? I’ve never seen ice cream with white chocolate, and I *love* some good Lindt white chocolate!!

  17. How funny, I just made strawberry pretzel dessert today for a friend who just had a baby. The ice cream looks equally delicious. I am off to buy an icecream maker.

  18. If I made homemade ice cream I would weight 200lbs!! I recently had a very strange flavor at Cold Stone Creamery which is cake batter! I tell you it was very weird to say the least because it tasted just like cake batter, which I love!

  19. I do not need to read this post….I power walk 5 miles 5 mornings per week to attempt to “keep it off”……sigh…I love homemade ice cream…cherry vanilla is my favorite!!!!!! 🙂

  20. I am with some of the pp..I think if I owned an ice cream maker I wouldn’t eat anything else. For fav flavors, any ice cream with peanut butter as an ingredient floats my boat. The pretzel & strawberry recipe sounds real yummy. I do like sweet & salty mix. Now kettle corn ice cream would be interesting.hmmm….

  21. That looks delicious. Has your brother tried Lactaid? I am able to eat all sorts of lactose filled treats if I take Lactaid.(tmi I know but I figured I’d share) I am going to try this recipe as soon as I get back into my house. The summers where I live are also an indoor season. It reaches 125+ here. So going outside to play for the kids, unless it includes water is out of the question. Thanks!

  22. I love Strawberry Pretzel Salad. One of my favorite desserts!! So, this ice cream sounds YUMMY!!!! I’m prego and now want some……huby might have to buy an ice cream maker and make me some, lol.

  23. thanks for the recipe! can’t wait to try it out. I haven’t seen a ice cream recipe that doesn’t have eggs in it and have to be cooked on the stove first. I bet this is a little lighter in that sense. Sounds yummy.

  24. i’m dreaming of big red ice cream! it’s just a 14-16 oz. box of frozen strawberries, 2 liter of big red soda (or strawberry soda) and 1 can of eagle brand condensed milk. you just mix it all together and run it through the ice cream maker. it’s so refreshing! my grandmother used to make it for me wheni was little; i remember her making individual portions in old plastic butter containers.

  25. Hi Heather,
This looks yummy! I love homemade ice cream–it really is best! My daughter was allergic to milk/dairy for the first 2 years of her life and since I was nursing, I had to give up milk/dairy also. That is when I bought my icecream maker! I could not give up everything, so I started making ice creams and sorbets that Leah and I (and my husband ending up loving it too!) could enjoy. You could try lactose-free milk as a direct substitute for your brother. Or you could use goat’s milk also. Rice milk might be a good substitute also, though with the low fat content, you might have to play around a bit. Soy milk would be good too, if he likes the taste? My daughter and I never got into soy.
Good luck and have fun whipping up some new combos!
    sheree

  26. thanks for the lovely cards! i’ve always wondered how coffee ice cream and cookies n cream would taste together. they’re my 2 faves, but i’ve never seen it mixed. now i’ll have to buy an ice cream maker and try it out! LOL 🙂

  27. Our ice cream maker is one of our favorite wedding gifts. Now we give one to all our friends who get married! We haven’t made ice cream in ages but the strawberry-pretzel recipe sounds too intriguing to resist. Thanks!!

  28. Wow – CUTE recipe cards, Heather! How fun – and the recipes sound just right for those hot summer days. Wish we could get a few of those up here in the Colorado mountains! Waft some of that heat this way! Thanks again!

  29. My mother use to make homemade ice cream when I was a child. As I got older I began to hate it…too sweet.
I’ve often been tempted and many tell me its not same like when I was younger.Strawberry is my fave of all flavors and I’m so very tempted. Is it still sweeter than regular ice cream?

  30. Yum! Thanks so much for the recipes. I don’t have an ice cream maker…yet. Its been on my list for a while though. And my almost 3 year old daughter is quite insistent that her favourite ice cream is blueberry-peach even though she’s never had it, so I think our first homemade ice cream will be that, followed by strawberry pretzel dessert flavour.

  31. Yummy flavors and/or add-ins…
Chai or other tea flavors (Earl Grey)
    S’mores
    PBJ
    Choc. covered, Peanut-Butter filled pretzels
Flowers or herbs would be fun to try- (Lavendar)
    Gingerbread with butterscotch ripple
    Cheesecake (with any flavor)
Cereal- Cocoa Pebbles, Capt. Crunch, Granola
Leftover dessert (when you have 1 piece and 5 people)
We have popcorn on top of our ice cream, but the Kettle Korn sounds even better!
This is kinda like naming the dogs, very fun, but could add pounds. Enjoy!
    Farmgirl “Mindy”

  32. Costco has a great 2 quart ice cream maker for $50 – It’s the kind where you freeze the bowl and it makes the ice cream in 25 minutes – so for any of you who don’t want to mess with the ice and salt!! (I think it’s made by Cuisinart)
It’s great, we’ve made ice cream 3 times in the last few weeks! But sadly, only vanilla – you’ve inspired me to branch out!!

  33. One of my absolute favorites is homemade Peppermint ice cream! I found a no-cook recipe that was just too thick (your tongue was totally coated and slimed!), so modified it to come up with light and delicious peppermint goodness… Instead of the 2 cups Heavy Cream and 1 cup Whole Milk, I substituted:
    1 c Heavy Cream
    1 c Half & Half
    1 c milk
And its absolutely PERFECT! Try it with any of your favorite recipes and enjoy.

  34. Heather—these are so stinkin’ cute!!!!! What program do you use to design stuff? I’d love to have some of these as lank recipe cards to put my other recipes on…these are exactly what I’ve been looking for.
And thanks for convincing me that I need to go out and buy an ice cream maker…

  35. Wow! Thank you so much for the recipe- yum, yum! Your photo instantly made me print this one! 🙂 Helps that the recipe cards are adorable too- thanks again!

  36. I love those strawberry pin cushions… They are just so sweet! I an really enjoying your blog as well. It will take me sometime to catch up on all of your neat post. I just found you, yeah! Susie H

  37. Thanks for sharing, I plan to make it with my kids. Every 4th of July we make home made ice cream and home made root beer, oh the best! Can’t wait to try it.

  38. my thrifty tip – buy a big bag of rock salt from your local home improvement store at the end of winter, it’ll last you all summer long. lots more for the $$. also, if you don’t have an ice cream maker or just want to make it exciting for kids you can do the coffee can method. put the ingredients in a small coffee can, put the lid on & thoroughly seal with duct tape. place inside a large coffee can & then fill with salt & ice. cover & duct tape. have kids roll the can back & forth for a half hour or so. ta-da! free ice cream maker!

  39. My niece & I once enjoyed eating a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream using salt & vinegar potato chips as spoons. It was mouth watering! I would love to make her some chocolate covered s&v potato chip chocolate chip ice cream! I’m salivating just thinking about it!

  40. Hi Heather,
This recipe looks blissful! And just in time – I have strawberries that need using up! But I will convert it a bit…
I too am lactose (and wheat) intolerant. I received an icecream maker for Christmas and have been experimenting, with delicious results! Here are some of my findings:
    1. The Vanilla Soy Ice Cream recipe at recipezaar.com is EXCELLENT (and no funky ingredients to find).
    2. This blog http://veganicecream.blogspot.com/ is also awesome.
    3. My own recipe for dairy-free coconut icecream.
    1 1/2 c. powdered sugar, 6 egg yolks, 1 1/2 tsp. cornstarch, 2 cups plain soymilk, 1 c. coconut milk, 1 1/2 tsp. coconut extract, 1 c. shredded coconut.
    Happy icecreaming!

  41. Fresh peach with marshmallow fluff…sounds strange, tastes so, so good made with peak-season peaches.
    The recipe cards are adorable!

  42. I’ve been eyeing those ice-cream makers for some time now…you may have just won me over :).
I’d love to try you recipes – they look delicious!

  43. I just discovered your website and love it! I have a blog of my own and would like to share your ice recipes. Would you mind if I used one of your beautiful ice cream pictures on my blog along with a link to your website? Again I love the blog and can’t wait to keep reading!

  44. The first shot of the ice scream is amazing. Your blog remains such a huge source of inspiration! Thanks for sharing your talents!

  45. well, my favorite dessert to make is something I call Bananas Foster, which is a real thing, but not something I’ve ever actually had. I think it has bananas and brown sugar in it, so that’s why I call it that. I put some butter in a frying pan, melt it, sprinkle in a lot of brown sugar and then slice a banana into it. Cook it up until the bananas are warm and soft and carmeley and then pour the whole thing over really good french vanilla ice cream. So if you could combine all the flavors into its own ice cream, I bet it would rock! Just occured to me, maybe throw in some crushed up graham crackers with it. That sounds perfect.

  46. those recipe cards are adorable! thank you for the time you put into them! i am sooo excited! while reading your post, i remembered…someone gave us an ice-cream maker for Christmas!!! YAY!!! it has never been opened…gotta go…make ice-cream! thank you, thank you, thank you!
    chelle

  47. I can’t wait to try this! I make homemade ice cream all of the time. My favorite is holiday spice tea ice cream that I make with Harney & Sons holiday tea. It’s requested every Christmas now. I also love to make blackberry Darjeeling sorbet in the summer w/blackberries from my bush. It’s great served with almond pound cake. It would be a good option for your brother.

  48. I’m ridiculously anxious for the new lines to come out. I’m not sure I can make it another month, & out of the sixty-ish different designs available, I could only narrow it down to 54 that I MUST have. The only way to get the big fix I want will be in fat quarters I think. And if there were a way to preorder, I would. I’d at least feel as if I Almost had my hands on it. For the record, I’ve Never been so crazy over a fabric line- ever. I’ve liked them (including Freshcut), but when it came down to it, picking and choosing favorites wasn’t imposible. So, you’ve outdone yourself (and everyone else for that matter).

  49. Mmm salty pretzel ice cream! I’m a disaster in the kitchen (no exaggeration, there’s abeen a few fires…) so wouldn’t attempt to make my own ice cream, but I’ll definitely think about using pretzels instead of ice cream wafers.
On The Apprentice over here, there was an “invent a new ice cream” challenge. I can’t remember all of them, but one team’s Avocado and Chili flavour (urgh!) sold really well. I much preferred the sound of Toffee Apple flavour!

  50. That sounds divine!
Time to dust off the ‘ol ice cream maker
I think I’ll have to attempt the blueberry/coconut concoction that was mentioned as well….yum!

  51. Just had to pop back in and let you know that I tried the recipe last night.
    Oh My Goodness!!
This icecream is TO DIE FOR!
It’s probably the best I’ve ever had.
Thank you so much for sharing and for being such an inspiration. 🙂

  52. Thank you so much for this recipe and the beautiful recipe cards! One of the things I love about your blog is how willing you are to share your creations and “celebrate” how we use your beautiful material. 🙂

  53. Hey Heather! I recently did some research too; however, it is on vegan ice cream recipes. In the midst of researching, I stumbled upon a dairy free cream that you can use for making ice cream! Check it out! http://www.mimiccreme.com/

  54. ok…here’s one for you…here in Seattle we LOVE to eat Fran’s dark chocolate salted caramels. Really better than anything ever eaten in the world. She GETS caramel. Dark and soft. And her chocolate is like no other. It’s what made me become a chocolate snob! 🙂 And also what packed on 10 pounds in college..
Anyhoo…it would be great to test out some salted caramel and chocolate chunk ice cream. I’ve been thinking of that myself, but we here have yet to see any summer type of weather. Still waiting to break into the 60’s. BLEH! So if you felt like trying it for me…perhaps we’ll see summer by August for a couple of weeks. Then I could say I inspired you to do something creative. 🙂

  55. recipe sounds fabulous…When I lived in Austin, TX, used to go to Amy’s ice cream. they have a flavor that is a combo of Vanilla, gingersnaps, and i think caramel….to die for.

  56. I have an ice-cream making device which came as a gift with my Kenwood for years, but I never dared used it. You may have just made me take it out and maybe use it!
As for the non-dairy, you may want to check those recipes out (I may not make ice-cream but that does not stop me from liking dessert or collect recipes!)
    Mixed Berry Soy “Cream”
Adapted from “Veganomicon” by Isa Chandra Moskowitz
    Ingredients
2 cups mixed berries (Liz used strawberries, raspberries and blueberries)
    3/4 cup granulated sugar
    1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 cup cream of coconut (the cream that rises to the top of a can of coconut milk)
    1 cup plain soy milk
6 ounces firm silken tofu (I prefer the vacuum sealed, non-refrigerated package)
    1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    Method
In a blender or food processor, puree berries, sugar and lemon juice. Scoop out and pass through a strainer or fine sieve to remove seeds and skin. Return berry puree to machine and add cream of coconut, soy milk and silken tofu, and puree until ingredients are completely blended.
Pour into a plastic container and chill in freezer for about 30 minutes, then freeze in your ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions. The soy mixture came together in about about 20 minutes.
    Makes about one quart.
    Chocolate Sorbet
From “The Perfect Scoop” by David Lebovitz
    Ingredients
    2 ¼ cups water
    1 cup granulated sugar
¾ cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
    pinch salt
6 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
    ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
    Method
In a large saucepan, whisk together 1 ½ cups of the water with sugar, cocoa powder and salt. Bring to a boil, whisking frequently. While whisking, allow mixture to boil for about 45 seconds.
Remove saucepan from heat and stir in chocolate until melted, then stir in vanilla and remaining ¾ cup water. Transfer mixture to a blender (KOD note: I used an immersion stick blender) for 15 seconds. Chill mixture thoroughly — for 2-4 hours in the freezer or 6-8 hours in the fridge — then freeze it in your ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions.
If mixture becomes too thick in machine, whisk it vigorously to thin it out.
    Makes about one quart.
    Bon Apetit!

  57. CocoPuff ice cream made with hazelnut cream. Yumminess. But I can’t wait to try strawberry pretzel. My mother-in-law makes a delicious pretzel crust jello berry something….

  58. What a fun summer treat! You inspired me to purchase an ice cream maker. Not so much for the ice cream, but for the shared experience with loved ones.
My three year old is learning to ride a bike. I decided to try the ice cream maker out at my Dads house, rewarding him and my daughter both for their big challenge of learning to ride a bike. After all…he taught me, so who better to teach my daughter, right?? Yumm-O!!!!

  59. Dear Heather,
Great posting, as always. Thank you for the free recipe card download. I love it! I used to make home-made ice cream when I was a girl – but we had to hand-crank our machine – lots of fun. Yummy too! I think it would be fun to host a strawberry themed swap. Anyone interested?

  60. I have one of those Cuisinart ice cream makers, and I love it. Once the drum is frozen , it takes no time at all. You just have to remember to put it back in the freezer right away after washing it. And you have to make sure you have freezer space! You can also make slushies or slurpies with it. Just add pop or juice to the drum until it is frozen, and you’re done. Much cheaper than going to 7-eleven!

  61. Heather…
All I can say is *Oh*MY*GOODNESS*…I LOVE LOVE that Strawberry Pretzel Dessert, I used to eat it all the time at my Southern Baptist potluck lunches. We made the ice cream (& printed out the adorable recipe cards) this weekend. It was a HUGE hit and oh so delicious! I just need to stay out of the leftovers and all will be good! Thanks for sharing this total yummy-ness with us!

  62. Ben and Jerry’s had an ice cream book out a few years ago. I have it and it’s great. It has a Lemon Daiquiri recipe that has no dairy and is DELISH. I’m sure it’s out of print now but you could find it cheap used.

  63. Hi Heather…love your new banner and colors of your blog. :o)
My kids and I have eaten a milk free ice cream called *Rice Dream*. You could buy it and add all sorts of combinations to make your brother some yummy *ice cream*.
What a nice Sissy you are to him.

  64. The recipe cards are darling…I hope my old Mac can pull them up.
We have an old ice cream maker that I keep threatening to get rid of…got it about 20 yrs ago and it never seemed to make hard ice cream, just mushy. and, if I remember right it was extremely loud. Maybe, they make them better these days and it might be worth it.

  65. Perfect timing! I made your recipe for our ice cream party this past weekend and everyone loved it. I sent them all here to get their own recipe card. Now I want to recreate my favorite custom blend: coconut, caramel, cashews in a sweet ice cream base. I guess I just love salt in my sweets!

  66. yummm, those candied pretzels combined with strawberries sounds absolutely delectable. i’ve gotta get myself one of those ice cream makers!

  67. Yum-mo as Rachael Ray would say, hehe! This has been bugging me, the music on your fab new fabric was sooo familiar, and then bingo, it’s Ratatouille (the Disney movie, or is it Pixar now??)!! Love it!! Thanks so much for being a wonderful, creative soul in this crazy universe!

  68. This looked so yummy, I decided to break down and go buy an ice cream maker over the weekend and try it out. Daddy was gone for a few days and we pigged out on yummy homemade ice cream for a couple days! My little ones Had the chore of picking fresh strawberries from our garden while I mixed the ingredients. Fun and Sooo good! Thanks for the great recipe!

  69. Wow !! Love your fabric, I have 3 little girls and can’t wait to make some more quilts for them from your lines! Keep it up, its a wonderful change from all the “woodsy” fabrics up here! Would love to come see blissful living and take some classes. Thanks so much for your awesome talent!

  70. Well, I couldn’t get your delectable ice cream image out of my head so I pulled out our old machine…found the motor is dead, so I went to Wally’s and they had ice cream makers on sale for $15-16…yep, I got one and now I am gonna try your recipe and others I am thinking of. My one daughter can’t have milk, but drinks rice milk – I wonder if I can mix up something for her…gotta look for recipes now. 🙂

  71. Hello, my name is Emily! This post inspired me to purchase an icecream maker for a 14 year old girl! She loves it! It was about 30 bucks at Target and it’s by a brand called Rival. It’s nice. This is a great gift idea for summer (or winter – peppermint flavored, YUM!!! CHRISTMASSY!) birthdays! Thanks, Heather. I hope you post again soon!
    -Emily

  72. I just want to say thank you for the recipes and a perfect post, made my day! I made ice cream yesterday and now I’m ready to make more flavors. I have the Cuisinart and it’s great, but sadly I don’t use it often. Now, I’m off to go print these cards. Thanks!!

  73. My husband loves making homemade ice cream…it is expected at gatherings of friends at our home, no matter the season.
I love the strawberry pretzel dessert (in fact craved it often when pregnant). I can’t wait to try the combination soon!
    Thanks for sharing!

  74. Holy Insanity! I made this for our 4th of July bbq… This was by far the hit of the night! Absolutely freakin’ delicious! Thanks so much for the recipe!

  75. This is a response to Donna (3 comments above mine): The great thing about homemade ice cream is you get to control how sweet it is by how much sugar you add!

  76. Oh Heather…
My girls and I made this for dinner last night (hubby was in Phoenix on a business trip) and WOW! We didn’t even wait for it to get super frozen. We had a “taste” and couldn’t stop!
    Thanks for sharing!

  77. Homemade ice-cream always seems so totally worth it – if only I had a machine – but especially so when it looks like this.
    Beautiful.

  78. Your recipe cards are beautiful! Thanks for sharing! We also love homemade ice cream, but use a smaller Cuisinart electric where you just freeze the bowl instead of using the ice and salt. I was about to make strawberry ice cream, but may have to change plans to try your strawberry-pretzel combo.

  79. How cute and fun! Love these recipe cards — do you have something like this in the works for your paper product line?

  80. Vanilla Dairy-Free Ice Cream
2 cups dairy alternative, divided (I use Rice Milk)
2 cups safe marshmallows (I use Jet Puff)
    1/3 cup sugar
3 tbsp oil (I use Canola)
    1 tsp safe vanilla extract
1 package gelatin (I use Knox)
In a medium saucepan combine marshmallows, sugar and one cup of dairy alternative. Stirring constantly bring marshmallow mixture to a slow boil until sugar and marshmallows have dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Meanwhile combine gelatin, one cup of dairy alternative and oil, allow to stand for five minutes. Using a stand or hand mixer (I use a whisk) beat gelatin, oil and dairy alternative mixture until foamy. Add vanilla. Combine all ingredients together and transfer to the frozen canister of an ice cream maker. Process according to manufacturer’s instructions (mine takes approx. 20 minutes).

  81. Yea, it was warm out today, puts me in the summer mood. Love the salty-sweet combo with the strawberry’s & pretzels. And of course anything with peanut butter or coconut (Not together, LOL) ! I have also heard rumors of Kettle Corn Ice Cream and Avocado Ice Cream, so I’ll have to track down recipes. My problem with homemade Ice Cream is that it always sounds so delish, and once it’s made and eaten I feel sick afterwards. I would love a lightly sweetened (Not artifcial) yet creamy recipe.

  82. When friends stop over in the summer to hang out it’s always a last minute idea to make ice cream so I’m not prepared. Perishables like whipping cream are not something I always have on-hand. I need a recipe that is ready from start to finish is 30 minutes to an hour, no pre-chilling or freezing afterwards before serving.

  83. Okay somebody had a delicious coconut ice cream recipe that called for Xanthan or Guar Gum. What is that and where can I find it?
Also, I LOVE Breyer’s Coffee ice cream. It’s soo smooth and creamy like a frozen frappacino. How can I make that myself?

  84. Your ice cream looks delicious. Interesting flavor. Never crossed my mind to put pretzels and strawberries in ice cream. It’s very creative.
If you want some lactose free ice cream recipes for your son, I have some on my website. I had to create some for my daughter who has food allergies. My favorite one is the soy chocolate ice cream. I will also be adding a very delicious soy strawberry ice cream recipe. These 2 recipes don’t have an overwhelming soy flavor. In fact, it’s hardly noticeable. My other children, who eat plenty of regular ice cream scarf these down in no time.

    Thanks for sharing your recipe.

  85. I’m just like you Heather – I love creating. The kitchen is my church and with 3 children who love ice cream the home made variety is not only fun but I can control the ingredients.
I don’t like all those nasty additives, refined sugars and articficial flavorings and colours.

  86. Heather, thank you so much for this recipe! I’ve used it several times and it is totally a family favorite!
    You’re amazing!
    Alissa
