When:    This week

Where:   Fossil Creek

Why:      'Cuz it's dang hot outside

Isaac's
sister Evie and her daughter Maggie came for a visit this week.  Beyond
shopping, and taking Maggie's senior pictures, their must-do list
included swimming in the Arizona heat. (Not enough warmth in Washington
this summer.)

We packed up the kids and headed to our favorite swimming hole, Fossil Creek, about 2 1/2 hours north.

What can I say?  I had a blast.

On
our way home, we stopped in Pine for pastries — a little ol' baker-man
braids bread inside a funny little grocery store — another favorite
stop.  We still don't know the name of the place; though it's right next
to the Sidewinders Saloon if you're looking for it. We are
always too distracted by the pastries, I guess.

  1. Wow, that looks fun! We’ve had a super warm summer up North as well but now it’s ended and I’m back to knitting mittens for the winter. And no waterfalls this side of the World, either.

  2. sounds fun! My husband tells me it quite a hike back OUT. How did Charlotte do? Do you think my 8 and 5 yo could do it?
Cause that sure beats hangin’ around here in the HEAT!

  3. I will put together a map to post.
The hike into the waterfall isn’t bad at all. It’s about a mile or so long(?). Mostly dirt paths with occasional dry, rocky river beds. Everyone will want to wear hiking boots or tennis shoes and there may be some hand-holding over the river rocks (if you bring kids).
All together, it’s pretty reasonable. Charlotte is 5 and has no problem with it. I’ll see what photos I have from the hike.

  4. Oh Heather what a perfect day! I can’t think of anything more enjoyable on a hot day. Love that slide show – not seen one before and it looks so much fun to create. Thanks for sharing your good times.

  5. You are so brave! No way would I plunge off of there! I’d just sit on the bank and fan myself while you cooled off. Well, I might venture in and wade a little if it wasn’t too deep.

  6. Sounds fun! We live in Flag but we did not go there yet. We’ve been to the Sycamore Canyon in June and other places in Sedona.
    Thanks for making the map!
