  • ✨ Chromatic Black ✨

Black oil paint is usually made from dark, but lifeless, carbon or iron oxide pigments. When one of these standard black paints is mixed with white, it creates relatively flat, lifeless shades of gray. 😐 When it’s time to darken a color mixture, standard black paint is said to “kill” the color. 😮

Because of this, there are many painters who avoid standard black paints altogether and opt instead to MIX their own versions of black using COLOR. 🌈💥Then, when that freshly-mixed ‘black’ paint is put to work, the resulting mixtures have inherent energy and depth—and don’t fall flat.

[Of course, there have been some AMAZING painters who fully embraced classic black paints—Zorn, Sargent, and Sorolla, to name a few. 💫]

Black paint mixed from intense, beautiful colors is called “Chromatic Black.”

There are numerous approaches that lead to lovely black paint mixtures. Usually, a mixture will center on two dark complementary colors. 💙🍊 For instance, one common approach is to mix Ultramarine Blue with an earth color like Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna. In such a case, if the mixture is too cool, a little more earth color is added. If it is too warm, a little more blue is added.

Also note that when a custom-mixed black is made from transparent paints, the resulting black will also have transparent qualities.💧This can come in handy for glazing or for when you want to darken a color while maintaining its transparency.

There’s no RULE that you must use black paint. 📜 And there’s no RULE that you must avoid black paint. 📜 Instead, there are preferences. Here are a few Chromatic Black paint combos to get your creative wheels spinning, and to start identifying your own preferences when it comes to black paint.

    ⚫ CHROMATIC BLACK ⚫

    • Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber
    • Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna
    • Alizarin and Phthalo Green
    • Prussian Blue and Burnt Sienna
    • Phthalo Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, and Hansa Yellow to neutralize
    • Phthalo Green and Quinacridone Red
    • Pyrrole Orange and Phthalo Blue
    • Dioxazine Purple and Light Green Permanent
    • Ultramarine Blue, Pyrrole Red, and Hansa Yellow Medium
    • Ultramarine Blue, Pyrrole Red, and Cadmium Yellow Light

FYI‚ Gamblin sells a tube of pre-mixed Chromatic Black. I believe it’s made from Phthalo Green and Quinacridone Red.

    Happy Painting. 🌈💥

    Giveaway Day 26

    Day26_HELLOgiveawayBanner

    Day26_WatercolorB

I'm am all about art supplies. I love nothing more than to sit at my
drafting table with a fiesta of colorful paints, markers and tools
within reach. It's also handy to have a few supplies that are easy to
pack up and take with me for long family functions, for travel, or even
for a trip to the park with the kids.

Day26_WatercolorA_300bOne of my all-time-favorite, easy-to-pack art supplies is my compact set of Winsor Newton watercolor
half-pans (the official name for these little dried cubes of paint). I
love to work with pan paints on the go. And each half-pan can be replaced
as it is used—without having to get a whole new set of colors. In fact,
you can swap the colors around, add new ones, remove a few, and make
your own custom palette to paint with.

The teensy-tiny box opens up to reveal plenty of palette surface for mixing colors. There is even a little water tray for plein-air
painting. (I don't use the water tray myself. I'm happy to bring a
larger cup along.) Also included is a small, round paintbrush which is
    stored inside the compact.

    WinsorNewtonWatercolorSet

These pan paints don't offer the same pigment depth as top-of-the-line
tube paint, but they are a good quality for a traveling set. And this
little box of watercolors has remained one of my favorite art supplies
over many years. You might recall my March of the Tools post on these from a few years back.

WinsorNewtonWatercolorSetTraveller300Today's lucky winner will receive a new Winsor Newton compact watercolor set to call her own, the same traveling kit that I use. A $38 value.

We’ve decided to dress up the turret. Even if it only serves as a temporary nursery for the baby, this playroom space will surely be improved with color, curtains, and a little bit of magic dust known as attention. Once bub starts sleeping through the night, we can address how to best fit his masculine self into the lavender girlapalooza that is Charlotte’s bedroom—or sort out some other solution.

The older kids were skipping to get involved. All in all, painting took only 3x longer than it would have had Isaac manned the roller the entire time. I reassured him that it was a worthy trade off for good memories and sweet feelings. Besides, who could resist this petitioning kitty cat?

  • Is it Monday again?

    LanternBloom1
    I'm
wrapping up an assortment of projects to clear my plate for August's
design marathon.  I hope time slows down a bit for the next two weeks.
Elijah is starting junior high school and I'm – just – not – ready.

LanternPillowA Perhaps waiting for my new to
    birthday bike
arrive will do the trick.  I haven't been this excited about a
birthday present since I-can't-remember-when.  She's vanilla with pink
rims, a rattan basket & a wooden rack — my creamcycle cruiser.
With a drink cup and bell — vrrink-vrrink.

LanternBasketT And guess whose birthday was just yesterday? Laura. Laura of Lantern Bloom. I am mesmerized by her new fabrics. The mill did such a fabulous job
recreating the moody depth of Laura's paintings;  it's hard to believe
these are flat, smooth fabrics. Stretch one print across a canvas and
    it's instant wall art.

I'm so proud of her. Laura has developed
a unique painting style over the years. One of the last things we did
together before she moved away 4 years ago was experiment with textured
canvasses. Now she's a master of texture. Laura has a collection of art prints heading to Crate & Barrel and a rich, new collection of fabrics as well.

    Wish
Laura a Happy Birthday, will you?  At a mere 2 weeks older, she paves
the birthday way for me each year.  I hear birthday sirens sound long
about July 26th, when it's time for Laura's slice of cake.  "Brace
yourself, Heather, here it comes."  I ordered my bike today, so bring
    it on.

Watch for Laura's Lantern Bloom fabrics too — definitely
a collection to see in person.  You can even make out bits of canvas in
    some of the prints.
