  • Christmas Interview Goes Live Today

SweetSimpleSweet and Simple Magazine (SweetandSimpleMag.com) is doing a 25 Days of Christmas marathon with interviews, tutorials, recipes,  party ideas and other Christmas-related fun. My interview went live today, along with details on my family's ornament-party tradition.

I'm working behind the scenes to finish up the new embroidery patterns so we can get those back from the printer with plenty of time to ship them out before Christmas. I plan to scent up my home with cinnamon and nutmeg—baking or candles, whatever it takes—then snuggle up with my kids and a soft quilt to embroider while we watch The Sound of Music or Gone with the Wind.

Doesn't that sound fabulous? It's the picture in my head that's getting me through the last leg of this race. I should have some embroidery-pattern news here very, very soon.

    Happy Holidays!

  • Late Night Sewing

It's the season for late-night sewing. With two collections to present
at Quilt Market next week, there's some serious sewing going on around
here. All of my clothes are covered with thread. Every surface is
stacked with odd cuts. The studio floor is littered with scraps.

    LateNightSewingT

In all the excitement of the last couple of weeks, I certainly
haven't forgotten about our Lottie Da fat quarters bundle giveaway. This
glorious stack of fabrics is sitting on my desk waiting for a new home.

Thank you, everyone for your enthusiasm for my new collection. I hope
you will take a trip to see the fabrics in person at your local fabric
retailer. Nothing beats mixing and matching prints in the wild paintbox
    of a quilt shop.
I am on the edge of my seat to see what you will make
with the new line, so please share. My Facebook page is a great place
for that. And I'll be prepping a Heather Bailey Fabric Flickr group soon
as well. On Twitter, catch me at @_HeatherBailey and on at
@HeatherBailey on Instagram. Hashtags help everyone else find the
    images, so don't forget #heatherbailey and #lottieda.

Now, onto the fat quarter bundle winner ˆ-ˆ-ˆ-ˆdrum roll ˆ-ˆ-ˆ-ˆ… The Lottie Da fat quarter bundle goes to Denise Clason,
Lucky #168 ("These prints are so fresh and cute, with a little vintage
flare! Love it!") Denise, we will email you and get these goodies in the
mail. Thank you, Random.org for making the selection for me.

By the way, it looks like Denise is sharing in-depth notes on the various classes she took at The Sewing Summit last month. Read through
her notes on Personal BrandingPitching Articles to Magazines, Blogging, HTML Basics, and so
forth. It's almost like being there.

  • Getting Going on Sewing

    130911_LottieDaQuilt4hb

It's a sewing week for me. For the last two years, I've spent most of
my creative time at the drafting table and behind a computer, catching
up on print and product design after having a baby. It's been great to
get reacquainted with my sewing machine and start playing with these
    sunny new fabrics.

    130911_LottieDaQuilt1hb

Angela Pingel of Cut to Pieces
kindly offered to put together the quilt top for my upcoming free
Lottie Da quilt pattern. She got right to it and had the top pieced in
no time—which means the pattern will be ready soon—once the quilt is
finished and photographed. Thank you, Angela!

    130911_LottieDaQuilt2hb

With no corners to match up, the Lottie Da free quilt pattern is a
perfect beginner quilt. I'll get into that more once the pattern is
complete in the next couple of weeks.

For now, enjoy this sneaky peek courtesy of Angela. And stop by Cut to
Pieces for Angela's post and a bigger peek at the quilt top.

    130911_LottieDaQuilt3hb

    And don't forget to
enter the Lottie Da giveaway that closes Sunday night at 11:59pm PST (9-15-13) for a fat quarter stack of the entire collection—over a $100
    value.

If you missed our Heather Bailey Store newsletter earlier this week announcing the Lottie Da collection… Enter promo code LOTTIEDA917 for a FREE full-size sewing pattern
with any purchase of $50 or more through 9/17/13 11:59pm PST. Add your
selected items to your cart to meet the order minimum, then add your
selected pattern, followed by the promo code at checkout.

    Happy Weekend!

Giveaway Day 12 — A Day for Cake

    Day12_HELLOgiveawayBanner

    Day12_ProjectLife_01

Today is my birthday. I don't know if there will be any celebrating just
yet. My kids are sick and at least one of them is staying home from
school. We're waiting to see how the others are faring. Thankfully, with
my campaign for Birthday Month, who really cares. There are 31 days in
August. We should be able to find a day for cake somewhere in there. It's Birthday Month!

Remember when birthdays were an achievement? In the middle here,
birthdays are just novelties, an asterisk on the calendar. If I'm
fortunate enough to reach old age, birthdays might become
accomplishments again. In fact, there should be necklaces to celebrate
your age like an award ribbon. When I'm 86, I'll gladly wear my age on a
gold necklace and swap it for an 87 with a smile.

    Day12_ProjectLife_02

This year's birthday doesn't just have a small asterisk next to it
though—because I'm giving away big presents every day this month. And
I've planned a big ol' glorious prize for today. Becky Higgins and Project Life are generously donating a complete kit of the Olive Edition I designed for them: a Core Kit of cards, an Album and a Big Pack of Photo Pocket Pages. Everything you need to complete an album. A $75 value.

Day12_BeckyHiggins-ProjectLife2Project Life is taking the scrapbooking and journaling world by
storm. In summary, it's a simple, efficient system for cataloging your
    life in photos and stories.

My limited Olive Edition for Project Life is currently available only at Amazon.com. In addition to the items shown above, there is a big pack of 12" x 12" papers and super-fun month dividers. Everything is very reasonably priced. For more information on Project Life in general, visit BeckyHiggins.com. Becky and her team keep a faithful blog of ideas and inspiration. There are even videos to get you started. Also, for the daily play-by-play, follow @beckyhigginsllc and #projectlife on Instagram.

  • Watch Me on PBS

I am guest-hosting an episode of Sew It All on PBS
this spring. Every PBS affiliate has a different schedule, so I can't
give you an exact date. BUT, the episode should be airing very, very
    soon. So, visit PBS.org to
check the schedule in your local area. Sew It All slated this as
Episode 4, but from what I hear, the episodes can be shuffled around by
the PBS program directors. And different areas will carry different
    shows. Very interesting stuff.

    SewItAll_HeatherBaileyBW_BabyBib

Anyhow, we're making baby bibs. Here are Sew It All host, Ellen March,
and I holding up a baby bib together—it must have been very
heavy—weighted down with cuteness. I'll post about the free pattern next
week, along with a little monster you can applique on the bibs—or on a
kid's tee shirt or bag, etc.

The fabrics shown above are laminates from my Nicey Jane collection—I LOVE them. They are so fun to work with!

Chances are, you'll see the episode before I do. Stop back by and let
me know if you have any questions afterward. We filmed the show in one
take. One, long 30-minute take. Can you believe it? No pressure, right?

    It was a blast.

  • @ Los Angeles

We just returned from a week in Los Angeles. My super-talented sister-in-law, Wendy Lane Bailey, had flown out to L.A. to perform at the Gardenia.
We were supposed to arrive in time to watch her sing, but our van's new
transmission had a different plan. Even though the transmission was
only a couple of months old, it gave out on our way out of town—big time. Needless to say, we started out on a different adventure than we had planned.

    AtSymbol

I'll just say that we got to know the truck stop really well. And
after a few hours we made our way to a pizza place near the mechanic’s,
camping there for most of the evening until we had secured a rental van
to pile into. Nine hours and $700 later, we were back on the road to
    L.A.

    FabricShopping

Unfortunately, we missed Wendy’s performance. A serious bummer.
But, we tried to make up for it once we arrived. We stayed in a
beautiful hotel in old-town Pasadena, one of my favorite areas.

Our first stop was to visit old haunts in the Fashion District with
the kids. When we lived in Hollywood, Elijah was about the same age as
our little one is now. It was bizarre—and pretty cool—to see him, at
6-foot-3, push our youngest around in a stroller just like I used to
push Elijah around the Fashion District in a stroller, years back. What a
    serious time warp.

    PinksHotDogs

We ate at Pink’s hot dogs for old-time’s-sake, spent a day at The Getty Museum, shopped at the Rose Bowl Flea Market (my favorite!), toured our old neighborhood—which has changed quite a bit, yet is so much the same—had cocoa at The Grove, and received a driving tour of historic Venice, CA from Wendy’s friend, Jessie, who has lived in Venice for the last 40 years.

I’ve been to Venice many times, but I had no idea that a large part of the city was originally built along canals. Instead of driving to a neighbor’s house, they would canoe. I love it.

    SphinxGettyMuseum

As for The Getty, I adore it.

If you can believe this, I never did visit The Getty when we lived
close-by. We even had a friend who was a curator there at the time, yet I
still didn't make it. Back then, Isaac once went on a private tour of
the museum before it opened. Where was I at the time!? Seriously.

    SketchingGettyMuseum

It was fantastic. I am awed and inspired. And ready to find a
portrait-painting class to take. Know of a good one? We’re back home
now, but part of me wants to turn around and head right back to The
Getty. If you are ever in Southern California, get yourself there. Don’t
    miss it.

    BreathingCover300The
mechanic repaired the transmission without charge. However, I’m still
sad that the fiasco cost us our chance to see Wendy’s show. She has two more shows
coming up in New York City next week. Perhaps I can round up a couple
of free tickets to give away and send one of you in my stead.

All photos are from my Instagram feed—hallelujah for functioning phone cameras! We forgot to pack the big camera on this trip—ack.

  • Lucky Ducky

A quick reminder: the Project Life Olive Edition SALE ends tonight at midnight EST over at Amazon.com.

I also want to introduce you to the digital version of the Olive Edition, which is on sale today at ACDigitals.com
as well. The entire digital kit is available for only $10.15, or you
can purchase portions of the collection for $3.19 each. Have a look.
There are a ton of designs included in the kit. A serious deal.

Heather Johnson recently posted these layouts she created with the Olive
Edition digital kit. Aren't they gorgeous!? I love how she layered the
gray chevron print with the turquoise floral background and balanced
the bold titles across the spread. Great job, Heather—I love what you
    put together. Super fun.

    HeatherJohnsonPage1

Heather is a photographer and a blogger from St. Paul, Minnesota. She is also on Becky Higgin's Creative Team
this year, which means she is a talented idea machine, churning out
Project Life inspiration left and right. I'm excited to see what she
does next with my designs. This is truly the most fun aspect of my
business—seeing what people make of my finished work. I love it.

    HeatherJohnsonPage2

Without further ado, I have a winner to announce for Friday's Project Life GIVEAWAY post. Whitney Winter, you can thank Random.org for calling your number on this one. An Olive Edition core kit and binder, along with a big pack of photo pocket pages is all yours. Email me
your shipping info and we'll have Amazon send out your prize. Thank you
to everyone who entered the contest. Like I said before, we're having
lots of giveaways this year, so hang in there and keep those fingers
    crossed.

  • Live from Marie, It’s Freshcut TV

We have a winner. By random drawing, one shiny copy of Creative Spaces Volume #2 is on its way to Renee G. Giveaways are the best, huh? Let's do a lot of them this year.

    Marie-osmond-heather-bailey-s

And, here is fun news. Apparently, my Freshcut flannel fabrics were featured on Marie Osmond's television show this week on The Hallmark Channel. Ellen March, host of Sew It All on PBS, joined Marie to make pajama pants. For more info on the episode and the free pj pants pattern they used, click here.
