Speedy Re-Covery

Highchaircover
Here’s something I should have done two years ago.  One hour of frantic
de-beiging and now Charlotte has a brighter place to spend her meal-
times.  I went a bit groovy on impulse.  Feels good (ala James Brown).
These are a couple of vintage pieces I had tucked away in the laundry
room.  I love how some fabrics from the 30s have a bit of a 70s vibe.
This is one of those fabrics I’d love to see reproduced so we could all
get our hands on some yardage. Yardage!

Well, there it is.  One snazzy highchair cover for a baby who’s probably ready to move to the kitchen table anyhow.  Sigh.

Here’s the before.

  1. So cute!! – I have the same one (the before one!) but got sick of washing it so I just took the cover off completely! Mine is almost ready to move to the big table too – they grow up too fast 🙁

  2. God!!!!
    This is awesome!!!
I need one for my baby too!!!
Is it from any specific pattern??? Please tell me, tell me!!
    lol…

  3. The ‘before’ was just not ‘you’ at all.
My Henry (3) has refused to use a highchair/ booster at the table for a year now, despite having to eat with his chin on the table and his arms above his head!

  4. Oh, that CURTAIN fabric….wow!
I’d be too busy fondling fabric to eat at your house.
    tee.hee.
    Thanks for your ALWAYS inspirational
    projects!
Is it possible to re-release fabric patterns?
How does one go about that?

  5. Wow – what a transformation. So much brighter. I don’t know why companies that make baby stuff insist on using bland patterns for things like that. There’s definitely a gap in the market somewhere!

  6. Oh how beautiful! It looks so great and very you. I love the turquoise ruffle.
My son’s highchair had a blue/white polka dot cover. Not too bad. But someone could make a fortune if they actually made a highchair that looked as beautiful as yours!!

  7. Every time I look at my boring mid-90’s high chair I think about giving it a new cover. After seeing yours, I may finally get around to doing it!

  8. Oh wow that is a really great idea, almost great enough to make me consider baby #2! (I’m missing all the cutesy cute baby stuff around the house!) You did a beautiful job.

  9. Too cute! My daughter’s highchair has one of those nasty vinyl covers that has just about given up the ghost. I thought about just recovering it, but decided to just move her to the booster at the table instead.

  10. How very clever! You beat me to it, Heather! I have been thinking about this for a year or more and now my baby is THREE! ((argh)) Should’a could’a would’a! 🙂 It’s gorgeous! Lucky Charlotte!

  11. Hmmmm. I’m guessing that some 70s prints were 30s-inspired if a 30s-print seems 70s-ish? I distinctly remember how early 80s-clothes were 60s-inspired, and my mom explaining to me how “everything comes back in style at some point” and wondering what would happen when we ran out of decades!
    Anyway, great work!

  12. It was great for just to sew and use your tuck treasures of fabric. Came out nice and what a great baby shower gift idea. Thanks.

  13. How unbelievably cute! I might have to attempt that… mine is just eating in her Bumbo, I’ll have to get her a high chair soon. Any chance you’d post some instructions (or email) for us less talented people who wouldn’t know how to recover theirs? I am loving it!

  14. The redo is fabulous! Could someone please explain to me why baby product companies do not use decent fabric patterns in their products? I mean, I don’t want to walk around with winnie the pooh anything, much as I love his stories. But I am not willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for stylish stuff… so I guess it is my own fault!

  15. The before is soo eww. It looks nice now! That’s something I have to (re)do to the Roundabout that E is about to fit into. Thanks for the reminder. Now I just need about 2.5 hours! Great work.

  16. After I saw your new cover (gorgeous!) I was racking my brain for some baby stuff to redo here. I’m due any day with #5 now, so I doubt it will get done, but I have a carseat and baby tenda that are calling my name.

  17. Never mind the baby – I would quite happily place my precious bum on such a pretty seat!
Hey, maybe there’s a market for upgrading baby’s boring beige furniture. Just don’t forget me when you make your million!!! 😉

  18. That’s adorable and a great idea — though, like you mine is probably getting ready to move on from a high chair — but, not sure I’m ready for the up/down dance getting her to sit still to eat!

  19. Oh how cute! Love, Love, Love it! Was also feeling sort of fabulous myself after realizing I have those same curtains! totally awesome are they not? 😉 Thanks for all your inspiring posts!

  20. You are so creative!! Please say that you have a pattern for it! I am so inspired to rip the pooh fabric off our highchair and create something beautiful! Can’t wait to see what your next whim is!

  21. If I remember right Charlotte is older than my little Sophie, who has been at the table for quite some time now because, although I the messy floors, I ugly highchairs even more. If I could sew something like that in one hour, I would probably still have Sophie in a highchair, however, it would take me many more hours than that, as well mucho frustration. We did find a lovely invention at Ikea. It is a green plastic frog bib that catches most of her droppings! By the way, what is the paint color you used for the fabulous table you posted a few blogs back?

  22. I agree with Cathy. There are too many baby and toddler products out there in muted neutrals and pastels. I think manufacturers are trying to cater to parents who want all of their baby gear to blend into their decor, as if they can somehow keep their home from looking like a child lives there!
Resistance is futile. When you have kids, your house will become inundated with brightly colored toys and games, so why try to fight the flood by having boring beige gear? Surround your kids with color! They are going to be in your home at least 18 years, so toss out the beige make your home a visually cheerful place for them. They’ll be happier and healthier for it … And maybe you will too.
This is much more ‘you’ anyhow, Heather. I bet Charlotte loves it! I’d be excited to climb up there and eat if I had that kind of chair!

  23. Hi! Just wanted to say that I love your style, your sewing, and your blog! I’ve been popping in from time to time. I think you might like a new community forum called Cre8buzz. It’s like an adult Facebook or Myspace, but not raunchy. The whole idea is to create buzz about whatever it is you do, in whatever community you choose (although you can cross over). It’s still in beta form, so it’s by invitation only, but I’ve been having a lot of fun there and I think you would make a great addition. If you’re interested, send me an email and I’ll send you an invitation. Would be great for you! Hope to hear from you! And great blog!

  25. I make a slipcover for my baby’s highchair a few months ago and i had the same exact feeling…why on earth didn’t I do this sooner???
I love how it changes the look of the highchair!

  26. Well, from a mom who’s 2 yr old just gave up the high chair this week – this info is sorta too late for me…unless we try this kid-thing again…but adorable idea! Thanks.

  27. Hi um.. I was wondering where you went to school I am trying to decide where to go. I want to learn how to sew and make my own patterns and also cook so yeah I am trying to find out what are some good schools. I love that high chair it is so cute!

  28. Do you have a pattern for this? I have the same high chair and hate the cover. I would love to make one as well!

  29. I love this design! Do you have this pattern available for sale? Your fabrics and designs are so inspiring and beautiful! I would love to recover my little boy’s highchair but can’t find a pattern (or replacement cover b/c the fabrics are pretty drab) and…yes, I need an actual pattern b/c I am not so talented in the sewing arena. I tried to use the existing pad but to no avail…in fact the chair is looking pretty sad b/c I only sewed it 1/2 b/4 I realized I needed help. I need to cover up the ugly plaid the chair came with…please help if you can. (:
