Round Things

Do onions make you sleepy? A friend of mine swears that a whiff of freshly- sliced onion can help defeat insomnia. Of course, she’s up before the sun and to bed by 9:30pm most nights and only has an occasional bout of sleeplessness. According to her (and her mom, who introduced her to the idea), when your eyes tear up from those nasty onion vapors, it’s easier to access your sleepy place. Hmmm. Now, I haven’t tried onions for sleep, but I wonder if there’s something to it. Is it hard, cold science or classical conditioning? Vintagebuttonshbw2_1Hmmm again. Just one of those thoughts buzzing around the back of my mind this week.(I have found that earplugs can work wonders.)

As for the eye candy… Aaah, vintage buttons, recent acquisitions from Market. I had used up a few of my favorite buttons on recent projects and it was time to replenish the palette. One card each, of the best colors — and boy, was it hard to stop at that. This booth had tables of bakelite, organized by hue. Drool. Thank heaven I was on my way to a meeting, or I would have been sucked into a mighty vortex of indecision.

  1. I don’t seem to have problems falling asleep – it is the quality of the sleep once my eyes have closed that seems to be the problem. Now if only I could condition my brain to dream of buttons, row upon row of gorgeous vintage buttons then may be I could wake feeling refreshed and wonderful.

  2. HHHhhmmm, onions. Dunno. May have to try it, as I have had a bit of insomnia these days!
Love your buttons. Why did you save all the fun fun shopping for after my departure from market!!??

  3. I don’t think anyone can resist the vintage buttons. Those are almost sweet enough to make my teeth hurt. You always find the best stuff.

  4. There is a them here. Yesterday on my blog I was talking about mother of pearl buttons. What A night mare I accidently dumped/ tipped my two boxes over and spilled them all over the place. I wish mine had been on nice little cards like yours. Humm thoughts while typing should I attach them all to cards and make my own button card sto keep them neat and tidy . I will think on that for a while sewing 4000 to 5000 buttons on cards would take a very long time. I love your new/ old store stock buttons. Very lovely colors
    take care

  5. Here’s a thought – you could experiment with gluing buttons onto cards. The red, turquoise and orange buttons above were glued to their cards instead of stitched. I haven’t pulled them off yet and seen how well they clean up, but I think they’ll be fine. Maybe white glue, like Elmer’s?

  6. Those olive green ladies at the top of your post – are you telling me that they were on a card altogether like that? Each of them is so beauitful aren’t they?

  7. Ooohhhhhhh… the green buttons.
Onions are great for ear infections. You squeeze some raw onion through a garlic press and drop a few drops in the infected ear a few times a day. It’s great if you don’t want to load your kid up on antibiotics! Works like a charm.

  8. Oooooo….great buttons make me happy as well. Did I read it right that Quilt Market is in SLC soon?! Tell me it isn’t so! I MUST attend. 🙂

  9. Love, love, LOVE the buttons – I need to find some myself as the tin is getting very low. I want to give the onion trick a go – hot nights here at the moment in AUS and sleep is hard to come by. Love the blog and LOVE the new fabric range. Bravo!! – Melly

  10. Try a few drops of lavender oil on your pillowcase, warm milk with honey – leatherwood is the best, and some relaxing music: it gives your mind something to do, instead of thinking. A warm bath half an hour before bed helps too. Those green buttons at the top of your post are divine. I love them!!!

  11. I also heard that a raw onion under your pillow is great for blocked noses…and garlic rubbed into the souls of your feet helps beat a cold!
    Just add seasoning to taste!

  12. Hi Heather, we just got our Freshcut samples from Market down here in Australia and we LOVE it! Our blog has a few pics of what we’ve done so far if you want to see! Sarah and Kathy 🙂

  13. I actually find that eating onions can make me sleepy. I actually typed this question into Google and came to this site, because I was wondering if others experienced what I do from time to time. Very odd.

  14. Just like Maria, eating raw onion makes me sleepy. Garlic does too. I found this site on google while trying to find out why.

  15. I have the same issues as Mike and Mary. I ate raw onion today, (which i never do because i hate the taste) and I became very sleepy for the rest of the day. I was also sitting next to the bowl. I’ve never noticed it before because I usually try to stay as far away from them as possible. It was a red onion by the way.

  16. I love onions, but any time I eat them in any substantial quality I get very sleepy, sometimes almost to the point of feeling like I’ve been drugged.
There are “wiki” sites out there that claim there is no link, but I’m calling their bluff. There is absolutely some truth to this, at least for some people.

  17. Arrived here just as Mike (6 Dec. 07) did. Yes, RAW onion – just a slice or two on my sandwich – makes me drowsy and ready for sleep.
As a kid, I mentioned this to my Mom. She replied that my Dad had made the same observation about himself. Maybe this susceptibility is hereditary-?
Cooked onions – no. Raw garlic – I don’t eat enough to say.

  18. Got here googling the issue of raw onions making me sleeeeeeeepy as I’m falling asleep at my desk after eating some in a salad. Never fails and is more pronounced as I get older.

  19. The onion is true. It doesn’t matter what time a day I eat them. Whether on a sandwich burger or hot dog. I go 2 sleep not even 5 min after dats why I eat nething wit onions on it at home. Glad I’m not the only one. Whew

  20. I’ve been searching the web to find out why onions make me so sleepy. The information is just not there. I was glad to see there are others who feel drowsy after having onions. I love them so much and usually have a chunk of raw onion with my meals at home. Good thing my husband likes them too, or else he wouldn’t want to get too close to me! Still wish I knew what the “sleepy” ingredient is.
