More fresh flowers in my world.
Isaac went kinda crazy with fresh flowers this week. When we were
first married, I was kinda bummed when Isaac brought me flowers,
wishing he’d spent
the money on a new tool or some art supplies. The flowers were
invitingly beautiful for a few days, but watching them wilt and die
would make me tangibly sad. It wasn’t long before the anticipation of
that sadness kept me from enjoying fresh flowers in my home, even when
they were still spritely and gorgeous. Oh, such a complicated emotional relationship with flowers. Woe is me.
Well, I’m over it.
I’ve decided that I can’t afford to be so affected. Other people
can handle the wilt and so can I. Perhaps this is all linked up
with my love for floral patterns. Hmmm. Any pyschologists out there?
Or maybe it’s because I’ve since collected every tool and art supply
known to man. In either case, I’m enjoying these bouquets while they
last. Really, truly now. And with a couple of quick snapshots, they’ll
last a bit longer than usual, in photographic form.
Fresh flowers for everyone! Just be glad you can’t smell ’em. Lilies are stinky.

That first photo is absolutely gorgeous! I’m still at the point in my life where I’d rather the hubby spend the money on something else. Until then, I’ll just enjoy your lovely flowers!
I love lillies, especially pink ones! I have some planted in my garden, and I always feel guilty cutting them- because then only the people inside the house get to enjoy them!
What lovely “models” for possibly incorporating into a new fabric design.
There is a story about yellow roses in our family:
When my parents were first married my dad came home with a dozen yellow roses for my mom. When she saw them, she became upset because they couldn’t really afford them. There was a big row and my dad said he’d never buy yellow roses again. Oh, over the years he did buy her flowers – red roses and plenty of rose bushes and other flowers for their garden – and the story of the fight over yellow roses was told with much laughter to family and friends – but it wasn’t until my mom passed away that he bought her the most beautiful bouquet of yellow roses which he placed in the church in our crystal vase for her funeral. They made us laugh and they made us cry, and I know she was looking down from Heaven loving them and my dad.
The moral of this story? You can always afford flowers.
Hmmmm. Fabric inspiration? These are beautiful! Enjoy while you can. The temps are dropping quickly in this part of the country.
prettttty!
prettttty!
I’ve always had the opposite reaction to flowers for almost the same reason … to me they are such a treat so truly frivolous and extravagant … everything I’m not! … I rarely inspire that sort of splurge!
They’re gorgeous. Although I agree on the smell. Never been a big fan of the lily smell. Not sure I’ve ever seen such pretty ones though. I think I may just have to make a stop this morning at the fresh flower market. 🙂
It seems to me they are serving as one of the most important art tools: inspiration. 🙂 Can’t put a price on that.
They are stunning, and as always, the photos are just breathtaking. 🙂
beautiful….lily fragrance actually makes me sick to my stomach….someone told me (but i haven’t tried it) that if you remove the yellow stamins from the centers that helps reduce the “fragrance”….let us know if you try it….
removing the yellow powdery bit fom the stamens helps lilies last longer, but i think it increases their scent because the center pistil goes into nectar overdrive when it doesn’t get fertilized.
beautiful just the same. =]
Stinky? No! I find them lovely to look at AND to sniff. But that’s just me.
Thanks for sharing your pretties.
they are pretty!! the smell of them does give me a headache!! the photos are great!!!!
Steph VW- what a wonderful story. Tears in my eyes!
And Heather your lillies are beautiful. I actually like the smell of lillies. They last longer if you pull off the powdery stamens. I pull them off so my cats don’t have yellow stuff on their noses.
oh, I love how lilies smell…especially stargazer lilies, they make me silly from sniffing so much.
Gorgeous photos!
WOW! these are gorgeous.
Flowers can make a day!
Flowers can make a day!
Thank you so much for sharing your flowers–they are so gloriously beautiful.
They may be stinky, but they’re also GORGEOUS!!!
Personally, I like the stink of lilies. They can be overwhelming though. I get that. When, I can smell them from a room away I think to myself, “Okay, okay! The birds. The bees. Me. We can all smell you already.”
I have this weird complex about flowers, too:
I prefer wildflowers, hand picked (so romantic, and they’re local, less expensive, no transit costs). Other fresh flowers are okay, but I really don’t like flowers delivered from a florist, partially because the arrangements from most florists seem boring to me, and because the cost is SO high.
The smell of lilies doesn’t bother me (be careful not to get the yellow stuff on your clothes or on nice fabrics). However, I recently was given some roses with baby’s breath, and boy, did that baby’s breath REALLY stink!
this summer, i got into the habit of buying myself flowers from a local farmstand. $5-$6 a bunch, and they last about a week.
i feel exactly the same way you do about the sadness of fresh flowers. however, i had a friend recently send me a dozen white roses from ftd.com… i’m not kidding you when i say they lasted 3 wks. I wasn’t even sad when they finally drooped.
And seriously, I loathe lillies, strictly based on the obnoxious scent.
Pam,
I loved the yellow roses story. Thanks for sharing.
Melanie
Those colors are stunning! Would it, could it be a hint of your future fabric design? We just received a shipment of some Fresh Cut in our little shop…….. so refreshing to see it on our shelves!
Trash Ties too? My daughters hair could use some! When do we get to see them?
Just being nosy!
Just having some fresh flowers at my house, I remembered the problem I have with them. I tend not to throw them out as promptly as I should and I’m left with that disgusting swamp water in a vase. Almost makes you forget how pretty the flowers were.
Ohhh my favorite flower 🙂 At a client of mine’s vacation home she likes to have fresh lilies when she arrives and she tosses them before they wilt so she doesn’t have to watch them die, so your definitely not the only one 🙂 Me on the other hand, I forget they are there after a while and look up to find mummified skeletons of what were once lilies hehe. oops!!!

First, I LOVE the photos, the pink made me sooo happy thinking bout spring. And the story about the yellow roses, wow, I felt myself tearing up, beautiful story!
About a million years ago I was a fully trained florist and have to admit the novelty wore off. However, having a husband who has probably bought me flowers no more than twice in twelve years I think I could appreciate them now.
My mum always bought beautiful flowers when she came to visit but she passed away suddenly this May and my house has been devoid of flowers since.
I may have to buy myself a small bunch tomorrow as yours are gorgeous and they do feed the soul. Enjoy them – even the intoxicating scent!
Wowza! That is such a beautiful photo. Did you touch it up with more pink?
i feel the same way! i suddenly realized a couple months ago that i really liked getting flowers and reminded the hubby of the lack of flowers! he has since been very sweet and brings me daisies and tulips and i love it!
oh, i made a quilt…and used some of your fabric…its on my blog. i love love love your fabric, i just wish my quilt store carried the whole line!
beautiful! Used to feel the same way, but not anymore! Especially on that dreary March day, when nothing is more beautiful than a big bunch of tulips!
Personally, I love flowers. Its a fairly small splurge, and it makes me feel really, really special.
My favorite flowers are daisies. They are happy, inexpensive, and last twice as long as most other flowers!
Pam, my Mom died when I was 4 years old and her favorite flowers were yellow roses. Someone (can’t remember who) planted a yellow rose bush at the foot of her grave but it didn’t last very long unfortunately. Maybe our Moms are in the Yellow Rose Club up in heaven!
Sorry Steph…I was looking in the wrong spot and put Pam by mistake!
I love the smell of most lilys. They are so beautiful. Fresh flowers make every space better!
Are you kidding me? I’d love to be surprised by a non-occasion flower bouquet once in a while, but isn’t that always the way with the ‘have bouquets’ and ‘have nots’? It truly is the nicest way to show someone you’ve been thinking of them that I can think of.
They are absolutely beautiful — enjoy them! But I have to completely agree, lilies stink to high heaven!
I always thought I was the only one who hated the smell of lilies. It makes me sick to my stomach as well. I’ve disliked the flower for years because I associate the smell so strongly with unpleasantness but I’m starting to appreciate them (especially in pictires where you can’t smell them!!)
Lovely pictures.
beautiful, stinky lillies.
love them.
gorgeous pics.
Oh Heather the flowers are just beautiful, and you captured them in a most lovely way…
Smiles…
Beverly
They are so pretty. You can get some very realistic plastic flowers that would solve your smell/ wilt issues 😉
I always cry (with shock!) when I get flowers from my hubby. It’s only happened a handful of times in 13 years…actually maybe that’s why he doesn’t get them more often!
Fabulous photos – I can almost smell them.
Stunning photographs. I like the first one very much!!! Flowers are too much joy, I can’t live without them!!!
Heather, when your father and mother were married 38 years ago, we were given some advice by the church leader that married us.
There would be times in your marriage when things would no be so rosy. So when you are down to your last dime…spend a nickel on lilies and a nickel on bread. Lilies have a special meaning in our family.
Dad
i love the smell of lilies!
I know how you feel. I want to get my money’s worth out of them, and let them hang around the house a little too long…
So funny, I used to be the same way when my hub would bring me flowers and now I wish I hadn’t discouraged it so much!
Chiming in here to say that these images of teh lilies are so beautiful! Stunning, really….and thanks so much for the visit my way. How nice! xoC
