Phew! & Far Between

Back for one day.  Now off to Los Angeles to meet with the _______
company to discuss a new collection of _______.  I have several
meetings with other manufacturers & suppliers lined up for various
projects I’ll be designing in the coming year.  I always love to visit
L.A.  We lived in Hollywood for a number of years & I’m still
attached.  Can’t wait to get a Martha dog at Pink’s

Quilt Market was a fantastic whirlwind.  Thank you to all of you
kind folks who stopped by for a Hello.  Such a supportive &
charming industry to take part in.  Lots of new fabric shops opening
up, lots of fresh energy for sewing, lots of excitement for my new
collections too.  In fact, I have the coolest slideshow all ready for
you, but have to postpone another week or so, as I’m already a couple
hours late getting out the door.

Puppy1_3
Oh, and we’re getting a puppy next week!  (Don’t tell my kids.)  We
have our pick of a litter of 7 Miniature Schnauzers.  Isaac made that
call.  He researched which breeds were most hypo- allergenic (he gets
bad allergies) & super smart and of good temperment.  I’m going
with the flow.  We’ll most likely get a female, but I’m not sure yet.
Last time we visited them, they were still too small to see their
personalities very well.  I’d love your take on names.  She/He will be
grey & the breed is from Germany.  Gretel?  Bobbin?  Griselda?  I
definitely prefer a non-human name.  And funny is good.  I have a list
going somewhere.

Thanks, friends.  I’ll try to blog on the road, if possible.  And, I’m serious about the dog name suggestions.

  1. How wonderful to get such a darling dog for the family! I am sure your kids are going to go wild for him/her!
I am just dying of suspense about your new lines!!! I hope you will be telling and showing more soon. 😉
    ~Emily

  2. Oooh…name the pup Schnitzel. Ok, technically, this food is not grey cuz if it were, no one would eat it but what a cute name for a dog!! And good for either male or female.
You know those blanks at the top of the post are a bit frustrating and not to mention feeding my curiosity like crazy!

  3. I know this isn’t german in any way, but she looks like her name could be Piccolo. Yup, just like the little flute. Kind of cute, don’t you think?

  4. I know this isn’t german in any way, but she looks like her name could be Piccolo. Yup, just like the little flute. Kind of cute, don’t you think?

  5. I can’t wait to see the new collection of goodies you come up with!! and a very cute Schnitzel there too! haha

  6. We recently got a puppy as well. I was told by a life long dog owner that it is best to choose a name with two syllables with the second being a “hard” sound. Supposed to help with giving commands. Example – Buckley, Buddy, Cheecha, Rocky… none of which are German or funny, but just for reference. 🙂

  7. izabella! love the name and it is different! LOL! or “metre” as in metre of fabric? and who could resist “yo-yo”? have fun!

  8. I’m looking so much forward to your new lines. And it’s totally exciting about the puppy – a fun name would be Wilma or maybe Trudi. 🙂

  9. ohhhh he/she is so cute… I’d go ‘gertie’ or ‘fritz’… your kids will love him/her.

  10. my daughter has been talking about how she wants to be a dog owner when she grows up! how fun for your little kids! lucyk you the weather in LA has cooled down for the week! you just missed the 107° weather!
as for names…fraeulein, or blitz (means fast), grau (the color grey), Liebe (is love)

  11. I don’t have any real name suggestions, but you should preface any name with Herr or Fraulein. Actually I kind of like Fraulein all on it’s own. Though Fraulein Shnitzel has a nice ring to it. 🙂

  12. We have a miniture schnauzer called Maizie – although she actually gets called Moo Moo!
Fantastic dogs to have with children and they are a bit nutty too!!
Great fun – wait till he/she has their first schnauzer haircut!!
    Too cute!!
    Enjoy!

  13. Giles, Helga, Hildie, Frida, Finsworth, Hans,
I love naming dogs! Its so much fun. Makes me want another dog. … hmm maybe not. lol

  14. hello!! I’m German and my name is Gretchen but growing up I had the nick name of “GERTIE” that would make a cute pet name…I didn’t like it so much as a child but for a pet it sure would be cute!
    Gretchen
PS…WINFIELD is a cute name for a boy puppy!

  15. Heather, Schnauzers are such good dogs. They do require a doggie spa to keep them looking good. I like the name Strudel also.
Your spread in Mary Englebreit’s Home Companion is wonderful. What great photos they shot, especially the one with the truck! Oh, can you tell I’m a gearhead at heart?

  16. I’ll ask Lola for recommendations. She’s a first grader at a German immersion school. She’ll likely have some intersting, if not good recommendations. My personal recommendation though is “Schnecken.” It means “snail” auf Deutsch, but it’s also a pastry…kind of a German sticky bun. It’s what we called Lola in utero, but it’ll work for a puppy too. 😉

  18. What a cute Pup…what about Dirndel if it’s a girl (it’s the traditional dress that girls wore in germany)…am hanging out to see that new fabric collection of yours!!

  19. I have a puppy named *Spot Noggin* He has a spot on the top of his head. I like the looks people give when you are yelling Spot Noggin.

  20. If we were to get dogs (yes I said the plural because my husband thinks a dog should have a friend!), I have two sets of names picked out….Gargamel & Azrael (from the Smurfs) and Hansel & Gretel. My husband wants two Rottweiler pups. If my son was to have been a girl, I was going to name “her” Gretel since I’m of German heritage and then my husband is Polish and has a nice long Polish last name…it was going to be a mouthful, that’s for sure.

  21. We had a Miniature Schnauzers when I was a child, and he was great! Not very barky, didn’t shed, and loved us kids. His name was Bogus, but we called him Bogie (not after the golf term).
I like the name Schnitzel… what a cute name! When we get a dog we are going to name him Stan, if it fits him. Don’t you think that would be funny to be at a park and yell, “Hey Stan! Over here!!!” and have a little dog come running.
Good luck with all your endevors and that new little puppy!

  22. We have a 2 year-old female mini schnauzer and she is wonderful. They truly are great dogs – no shedding, very sweet, small. You will love your new addition!
    Karla

  23. Can’t wait to hear more about the new collection, and to see the slideshow. What a sweet puppy! I love the name Gretel!

  24. Thank you for steering away from human names! Seriously. That has caused some tension in my family. What are people thinking when they do that!?!

  25. I can’t wait to see your new collection!!!
For the puppy, I think Fraulein is adorable, but I also like Marta or Trinka?
I’m sure your kids will just be thrilled!! (and good luck with the house training!!)

  26. Well..I think Bobbin is appropriate given your work. We have a little dachshund named Hanna. Oh..and a new British lab named Sir Paw McCartney..Max for short. It doesn’t ever seem to matter what we name our dogs..they always end up with nicknames anyway! Hanna Banana..Hot dog Hanna, Pupper.. dookaroo (for our other Lab..Duke) dookie..dookster…nice, huh? Can’t wait to see all of your new stuff. I was at Hancock’s-Paducah, KY yesterday, but I couldn’t find any of your fabrics??? What’s going on with that????

  27. I was so looking forward to a sneak peak at your new collection. . . but there is a silver lining. I found an online shop which still had an entire FQ collection of Freshcut and since I’ve used nearly every single scrap from my initial order, I couldn’t resist. . .and I bought more. . .I think I’m addicted! I do have a puppy name suggestion, when my husband was in Germany he absolutely loved their version of french fries. . . translation Pomme-Frites, if it’s a girl it could be shortened to Pom-Pom; a boy, Frites. Have fun in LA!

  28. Okay..I thought I left a comment, so I hope I am not repeating. We have a dachshund named Hanna. Hanna banana, Hotdog Hanna..etc. A British lab named Sir Paw McCartney “Max” Pupper..babycakes and a standard Lab named Duke..dookie..dukester..dookaroo. Nice Huh? It seems as though they get nicknames around here no matter what we name them! By the way, I was at Hancocks Fabric-Paducah, KY and I couldn’t find any of your fabric. What’s up with that? I can’t wait to see the new stuff!

  31. For the dog name, I recommend “Fritz.” My sister had a mini schnauzer named Fritz and it fit so perfectly and he was a cutie pie.
I’m excited to see whatever new venture you have in the works. Everything you touch seems to have style and class, I am sure this new line of __________ will be no exception.
A BUSY lady to be sure, but if you ever have a moment free I would love to ask you about your Trash Ties. I’m loving them and would like to promote on my blog.
    Safe travels~
    Amelia

  32. We had the most wonderful Miniature Schnauzer growing up – her name was Greta, and she was coal black. Whatever name you pick, you are getting a great little dog!

  33. OH OH! you are going to love your new mini schnauzer. We have two and love both of them dearly. They are such great dogs. Perfect size, no shedding and smart (sometimes a little too much for their own good).
We got our first from a breeder (a female- Cloverdale Pesto) and our second we rescued (a male- Zucco Clyde). They are both so differnt but incredibly sweet and funny.
We have noticed that our female is a bit more dominant and can be a little spazzy around kids but our male is really easy going and has no problems with anyone. (We don’t have kids of our own quite yet, so I think this is why she is unsure).
If you have any questions let me know- you are gonna fall in love!
    🙂 Vanessa

  34. Our dog’s name is Asha and our other dog was named Mika – great names for our girls.
I too think Fraulein Schnitzel is hilarious and Pippi is cute – which led me to ‘Poppy’ – kind of liking that for a little one.
Best wishes – happy puppy days!
    A.

  35. I love thinking of dog names! How about…Paisley, Tweed, Tartan, Chintz, Taffeta, Crafty, Toile, Gingham, Linen, Plaid, Brocade, Lace, Battenburg, Eyelet, or along the Photography lines like Shutter, Kodak, Cannon, Clicker, (I’m sure your husband would be better to ask about Photography names)

  36. I had to look up that hot dog, and wow that hot dog has a lot of toppings. L.A. is on my list of places to go, and Pink’s is on my list of places to eat.
Now on to the topic of new puppies. I grew up with Schnauzers, and love them. They are great dogs! We had both a male and a female. I would definately recommend the female. Our dogs were Max and Betsy. My brother now has a Schnauzer named Lily. But my favorite Schnauzer name is Mr. Bones. I loved that name.

  37. For some reason my 6 year old daughter has named all of her pets ” Pot Roast”. We aren’t really sure why, but it is super cute when she goes around calling ” Pot Roast, where are you ?! ” We never know which one she is calling for !

  38. Awe! I have two mini schnauzers and have to say they are the greatest dogs! I too have allergies – and they are great choice. My pups are both boys and are named Bailey and Hurley.
As for a girl name – how about Casali – after one of my favorite German candies! Or Wilhelmina – Wilma or Mina for short 🙂

  39. Congrats on your puppy. We just got one recently and named her Bella. It means beautiful in Italian. I love calling her…”Bella!”
I also liked Zoe, Daisy, Lulu, Ruby
Oh, and definitely try to get a girl. They have such better temperments. Boy dogs can have issues with whose the boss. Girls tend to be more submissive.

  40. We got a miniature schnauzer in October (picked her up at the Rose Bowl Flea market of all places–shhh). She is the best–makes my heart melt. Her name is Etta Rose.
Good luck with all your projects. Can’t wait for the unveiling!

  41. Bobbin is great! haha
something about looking at that adorable puppy makes me think Twizzler also… for absolutely no good reason. Whoever said Fritz, I like that one too. You could also go the Audrey Hepburn route and call him Hund (dog in German). I also like Straße (pronounced like Stra-Fa sort of…) which means street. When I was in Germany last summer I got a kick out of how our GPS system couldn’t say it right… haha.
other ideas: Kleine Bär (little bear, as in ursa minor), Winzig (tiny I think) … unfortunately German doesn’t make as cute names as other languages… like Chien (dog in French) is really cute. Or Allemand (German in French – lol). And so are the crafty names someone suggested, like Tartan and Plaid.
haha sorry I got so carried away – I love naming things!!

  42. I CAN’T BELIEVE you are thinking of naming your schnauzer Gretel! I was given a Schnauzer for Christmas when I was five and I SO wanted to name it Gretel (I loved Hansel & Gretel..) I guess my mother was not too thrilled with that name tho and somehow she ended up being Gigi. (more of a poodle name, I know..)
I loved Gigi.. used to walk her in Central Park and take her on the train to my grandparents farm in Westbrrok, CT..
I hope you name her Gretel!
    🙂
    Melissa

  43. I had a miniture schnauzer named Gretel when I was growing up. She was a pretty good dog. By the way, they are really cute when you don’t clip their ears.

  44. Awwwww… schnauzer puppy! When my husband and I got married, we joked that my family’s schnauzer, Bentley, was part of the dowry and so I took him with me when I moved. Bentley was my little piece of home, a great friend, a good listener, and extremely smart “person in a fur coat”. You’ve made an excellent choice.
I am allergic to dogs to and the only time they bothered me around Bentley was when I would give him a bath and then blow dry his fur (can’t let a wet dog outside in -40 temps).
Personally, I like the name Bentley, but I’m a little biased.

  45. If a girl, Liesl (from Sound of Music). It’s human, but have you ever actually met anyone with that name?

  46. How exciting!! I grew up having schnauzers in our family and our dog was named Schnitzel..I saw another comment on here that listed that name..always a fun one! My grandparents and aunt also had schnauzers and we always picked some sort of German name for them. I can’t wait to see what you have been up to!! I always have to add some of your fabric to my collection and it is always the first stuff used up, so I’m antsy for some more!! Have fun on your trip!

  48. We adopted our min. schnauzer almost 7 years ago and he’s awesome. Very smart. Great with kids. Doesn’t really shed. Oh yeah… and his name is Otto. That was his name when we got him. We didn’t want to confuse the poor guy by changing it and we liked it anyway.

  49. how about claudia (cloud-ia)? lotti? dahlia? hazel?
and i love gretel. but if you were in germany it would be pronounced grey-dl… 🙂
good luck with all your fabulous super secret stuff. 🙂

  50. We are cat people, but our cats (previous and present) are as follows: Jester and Alex (boys), Athena and Calypso (grey girls with a touch of brown), Ramses (grey, very eqyptian looking), Horatio (boy) and Silvara (girl).
    Have fun naming!

  51. OK…this will sound terrible, but my friend just gave us the three names they are considering for their baby that is due in September…I thought they were all adorable doggie names…mean friend I know…I didn’t tell her though!
    Darby
    Sawyer
    Piper
None very German, by the way mini-schnauzers are so sweet and wonderful!

  52. We’ve always gotten girl dogs but I’ve always wanted to get a boy dog because they have funnier names like
Zorro, Robin Hood, Little John, Petter Pan, Indiana Jones (who was named after George Lucas’ dog), Tatter-Tot, Harry Potter, Neville, Bond…
    Love silly names!

  53. Someday I hope we can have a dog and I always say I will name it Hoover… in hopes that s/he likes vacuuming under our dining table after the children eat! So: Hoover, Eureka, Dyson, Bissel,… Miele (it’s even a German company name!)
Congratulations on the impending adoption… I am sure the name will offer itself when you all meet and bond!

  54. Congratulations on expanding the family!
Here are a few name suggestions:
Liebling (means ‘darling’), Knospe (means ‘bud’), or Schnurrbart (means ‘mustache’).
    All the best!
    Charlotta x

  55. I think Bobbin is darling and it fits, especially with you being a fabric designer and all-around crafty lady extraordinaire! Bobbin – sewing machine – fabric – you see where I’m going with this!

  56. i think sound of music was set in switzerland, but it is just south of germany… so i think you should name IT one of the kids names… Liesl, Louisa, Friedrich, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, Gretl. my fave is gretl!!!!

  57. I’m with Wendy – I suggest Schatzi (pronounced shots-y).
My childhood dog (I have terrible allergies too) was a schnauzer named Rascal (he was anything but). Schnauzers to have a mind of their own – they are terriers after all!! I have a Maltese (terrier as well) and he is more difficult than Rascal, but still mindful.
    Ahhh…memories!

  58. Hi Heather, you are such a talented pretty lady! Love your style and sewing room I would LOVE!! Just got your Fresh Cut from your MIL for a quilt and outfit for dd, can’t wait to the slideshow of the new line! My neighbor got a little Schnauzer, he is named Apolo, if you lived next door your’s could be Julianne (from Dancing with the Stars haha). How about a name from kids of Sound of Music, well, I know it’s Austrian (Liesl, Brigitta, Gretl) or Maria and when it has an accident you could sing “How do you solve a problem like Maria, haha! Have fun in LA!!! I am dying to go to Fabric Market out there.

  59. Hi Heather,
Could you please tell me where I can get, buy, etc your patterns for the purse and others that were featured in the Home Companion magazine…I can not locate any of them.
    thanks
    Raejean

  60. We had a dog named Fritzi when I was a child. I also like the food names others have already mentioned like Strudel and Schnitzel. Can’t wait to see what else you have coming in the future!

  61. Oh, puppies are so exciting! I have a Miniature Schnauzer named Rufus, and he is such a great dog! Have fun! And I can’t wait to see all the new _____s, whatever they are!

  62. I had a dog called Bobbin! An excellent name for a dog in my opinion.
He’s the size of a miniature too. A miniature horse 🙂 We had to give him to a family with a hobby sized farm so he had enough room to gallop around.

  63. Oooooohhh! So cute! We have a mini schnauz and her name is Iris 🙂 She’s a great snuggler and always alongside us. I grew up with my mom breeding mini schnauz’s so I’m very familiar with them! Names…hmmm…gotta think on that.

  64. Leibschein (“little love”) though my spelling might be wrong. Love this word and such a sweet diminutive.

  65. How exciting to get a new puppy. We have a Schnauzer as well…Luka..and he is a great little friend! I am sure you will get lots of laughs & love from this new addition to your family!
On another topic…just bought some of your freshcut fabric….and I am in love! Can’t wait to get started on my new project…
    K

  66. If you type “Hunde namen” in Google, you’ll get plenty of sites where they suggest German dogs’ names.
Why not give the dog a name from the Nordic pantheon (ie. odin, thor, etc.)

  67. How adorable
Well we’ve just purchased a puppy shih tzu and his name bless his heart is Wicket!! as he is the spitting image of the ewok off star wars!!
I certainly get some looks when I’m calling his name – lol xxx
Good luck in LA and with your name decision x

  68. The smartest dog I’ve ever known was a schnauzer named Sophia of Bulgaria… Sophie for short. Sophie would go into the corner if you said, “Shame, Sophie. Shame.” She also answered the phone (if it were left on the floor) by growling into the receiver.
    Gosh I liked that dog.
    Dana

  69. My husband and I are considering getting a Boston terrior, and we want to name him/her Rosco or Rusty. I personally love Russian names like Sasha and Yuri. If you want to go with a German name, you could do Autobahn, Heidi, Gretchen, Otto, Blitz or Fritz. If you google it, you can find all kinds of German dog names. How fun!! I can’t wait to get a puppy.

  70. the pup is cute and what a fun addition, but they have to get groomed, have you researched Boston terriers, they are Amazing dogs and great temperment, good with kids, super cute, no grooming other than baths, short coat so they are good with allergies, small and compact. i may be partial because i have 2 but they are wonderful animals… Good luck in whatever you pick, i am sure he/she will fit perfectly!!!!

  71. I think Schnitzel is a great dog name and I see someone else has suggested it already, but how cute, a Schnauzer named Schnitzel

  72. Hello Heather,
I own three dogs. Cocker Spaniel(Khalua), Maltese (Zsa Zsa), and Fonzi our Yorkie. Zsa Zsa gets so excited when I call her name. I would say…”Come here me ZSA ZSA” and she would bark uncontrollably. It is also easy for my 2 year old to say. GOOD LUCK and I adore you and your work.

  73. oh oh oh!!! I think I know what company! (I’m in LA so am cheating a little) If wasn’t headed to Tokyo in the morning – I’d ask to meet up!
as for puppy names – I wanted to name my male german shepherd, Ragel (after ragel gumm – a character in a philip K dick novel).
I like pom pom for a girl and also Ein (one) for either sex. Ein is a a dog character in a Japanese cartoon called “cowboy be bop”

  74. I still like PAISLEY and TWEED, but here are somemore, (I know some are out there, but you never know what will spark you or lead to something else)-
Boucle, Chenille, Chiffon, Tassel, Fringe, Gusset, Remnant “Remi”, Stitch, Scraps, Selvage, Vintage, Ruffles, Blogger, FRAULEIN, Whimsical “Whim” or “Whimsy”, Treasure, Cherish…
What is “Friend” or “Companion” in German?
    Farmgirl- “Mindy”

  75. Schatzie!! That’s my vote for your new pup. My hubby actually calls me that as a pet name. I think it would be so cute for a female Schnauzer.
I am excited to see your new collections too.

  76. Oh I also think Schnitzel would be wonderful! ;o) I have a miniature schnoodle…Emmitt. We LOVE him and he looks pretty much like his momma, who was the miniature schnauzer in the equation. He is THE smartest dog and just too darn cute, and yes, I am biased! Can’t wait to see the slideshow too!

  77. I am not a dog person & I am SO wanting to get a pup to name Fraulein Schnitzel! Best.name.ever. Best of luck with her!

  78. just wanted to add that the breeder where we got our schnauzer said that she finds that the male dogs are more easy going and affectionate then her females…and our little guy lives up to that…he is just all about love, hugs and kisses!

  79. Oh how cute! I have a white mini schnauzer and you’re right about them being hypoallergenic! Ours is names Jules. She’s a sweetheart and VERY protective of her people. Your kids are going to love the puppy!

  80. How about Corta? Then you can rub his/her belly and call him/her your little Fat Corta! lol
or Viertel – German for quarter

  81. how wonderful! i would suggest you look here for great info: http://amsc.us/ you did wonderful by looking at the akc for info on the breed. the parent club is affiliated to the akc. they always have tons of info about the breed, list of reputable breeders, etc (i personally would not purchase a dog from someone who is not a member of the parent club for their breed.) research will be your best friend when comes to buying a puppy. i own a show doberman pinscher and am member of the doberman pinscher club of america. anyway, more info that you wanted to know…LOL!!

  82. I have a friend with a schnauzer named ‘schnoozer’ and my kids love to say the name again and again….

  83. I have a 1 yr. old Min. Schnauz named Abbie. VERY smart, very clean, very lovable (TO HER FAMILY) and very snobby to everyone else. Loyal to death! I agree with the other post~that first Schnauzer grooming was such a fun experience. We thought we had a totally new dog~cute and very velvety. I would go with the name Bobbin. It sings your line of work and is cute to boot. Your doggie decision is perfect, trust me! Oh, do go with the female. My sister in law has had bunches of both male and female, and much prefers the females.

  84. I’m a native german. A lot of dogs are named: Senta, Bello, Bruno or Waldi.
I would name a female Dog Fritzi (Fritz really is a boys name, but who cares these days?)
growing up our dogs and the ones of family and friends were: Senta, Benji, Sultan, Waldi, Rusty, Jenni,Mucki, Cindy.

  85. We adopted a Jack Russell and named him Ralph, it fits perfect. We hope you find a perfect name as well. My last name is German- Eppers- maybe drop the last bit and use “Eppe” Feel free to visit my link- as it’s Ralph’s Blog!

  86. We adopted a Jack Russell and named him Ralph, it fits perfect. We hope you find a perfect name as well. My last name is German- Eppers- maybe drop the last bit and use “Eppe” Feel free to visit my link- as it’s Ralph’s Blog!

  87. I always thought I would name a doggie Agnes if I ever got one. I think Greta/Gretel and Olga are pretty cute too! Good german names! Have fun!

  88. That is one CUUUUUTE pup! 😀
I can’t possibly read through all 127 comments to see what names have already been suggested but I’m pretty sure no one has mentioned this:
Shooneeg (shoo-NEEG) — it basically means “doggy” in Armenian, and it’s kind of cute 🙂
I also like (and maybe some of these have been suggested already): Pepper, Barky (hee hee!!), Licorice, Twizzler, Stormy, Mushroom, Ashes, Smokey, Oreo, and Tweedy.
My friend named her dog Tweety, so, hey, anything goes! 🙂
    Ann-Margret

  89. I was going to say Schnitzel as well – it was my first thought – but Streudel is definitely cute! And how could she not be cute with any name that starts with Frauline? Frauline Fuzzybutt?
Ooo, ooo…! EDELWEISS!!! That’s it! Definitely. Edelweiss. Yep.

  90. Have fun in Hollywood :o) Schnitzel was my first thought, actually… it seems like a lot of other people shared that name, too! Schatze means “dear” in German… but it sounds kind of strange in English.

  91. Love your little puppy girl! We just had a litter of kittens and seaching for names is my favorite part of having kittens. We gave our kittens mideaval Flemish names.
German names and non human …What about Liebchen what means darling

  92. We’re waiting for our little puppy too! She should arrive about when yours does. We’ve talked names and changed hers several times but right now she’s Saffi, which is a Danish meaning wise. My great-aunt had a Schnauzer named Rufty, Rufty Eureka Barnsmell, but Rufty for short. He liked to roll in manure….. Can’t wait to see pictures of your ‘baby’!

  93. Oh you asked for it! – here we go – just a couple:
    – schatzi (Pronounce: sjatsee. Means:sweetie)
    – mädchen (Pronounce: maydjen. Means: girl)
    – stups (Pronounce stoops. Short for stupsnase which means little round nose)

  94. Well, sewing needle in German is Heftnadel, and fabric is Fabrikat… shame you didn’t get a moggie. I have a friend with a dog called Texta, because he has one white paw that someone forgot to colour in. How about Kinder (child) or Kleine (little girl)?

  95. I used to walk a dog called Bismarck although the famous Bismarck wasn’t very nice, did introduce the first social security system(despite motives). Have fun with the little one. Like your designs alot!

  96. aww, she is sweet. My mama is german, thus I got the name Sonja. Some names in my fam are Liesl, Hannalore (pronounced like Honna-lora), Anja (on-ya), Hilde(hil-dee).But you may just want to get her home and evaluate what fits her best.

  97. It’s not a german name, but my favorite pet name is Guess. So then when people say, “What’s your dog’s name?” You can say “Guess!”

  98. Helga is my vote (and also my German mother’s name). Our mini Schnoodle, Murfy, is a great companion and he’s smart as a whip. I once asked our vet what the most clever dog’s name was that they had in their practice. It was DOG , pronounced dee-oh’-gee, just like saying the letters, with the emphasis on the o. Now onto more important things…. Heather, when the heck is the “reveal” scheduled for?

  99. I thought mine was going to be original, but I saw that someone already had the same idea: Schatzi. My ex-boyfriend was German and we lived n Berlin and he always called me that. On the flip-side, I like bodkin.

  100. We have a 10 month old mini schnauzer named Dory. She is a sweetie. The kids love her. She only sheds when she gets brushed. They are so cute when they get their schnauzer cuts. She a salt and pepper. Have fun with the new puppy!

  101. I like Bobbin too, but I’ve always wanted to name a dog Mitzi. Don’t know if it’s German, but I think it’s cute! Looking forward to the slide show.

  102. I know I’m a bit late, but if it’s a girl, I think the perfect non-human, yet distinctly German name would be Karmann Ghia. Call her Karmann, call her Ghia, I love them both!

  103. We have had 2 mini schnauzers. Our female was a sweeter temperament than the male, but both were AWESOME with our kids and neighbor kids. Love the non-shedding feature!
    ENJOY!

  104. Cute dog! Names? Let’s see…..how about Gingher – after my favorite pair of fabric shears. 😉

  105. If I got a new puppy, I would name it Mambo. Also, maybe Bob. But you said non-human, right?
The german names are cute, though.
Hmm, I think that’s all the inspiration I’ve got for today. Sorry :).

  106. Heather goodluck with the puppy. We had 3 mini schnauzers growing up … Holly, Abigail and Greta, loved them. I now have a GIANT schnauzer Hope that I rescued just over a year ago. Have fun!
    b.

  107. Oh, you really should read some Hairy Maclary books for some great dogs’ names (actually the puppy in the pic looks a lot like Hairy Maclary himself), like Schnitzel Von Crumb (with the very low tum), Bottomly Potts (all covered in spots), Hercules Morse (as big as a horse)….etc etc. You get the idea!! Good luck with it 🙂

  108. Hi,
I have two mini schnauzers (3 year old littermates) that are just fantastic. When I first got them I kept reading about their sense of humour and mishchieviousness, but didn’t really get it … but it is so true. They truly make me laugh so much with their good-willed spiritedness. They can totally be rambunctions with eachother and jump an dplay, but they settle right down and love to be cuddled. They are great with kids of all ages.
As for names, I really wanted their names to start with ‘S’and thought it would be great to say “Have you met my schnauzers Schnitzel and Schnoodle”, but in the end went with Sophie and Sebastian. I thought I wanted a German name (and we are German, so it wasn’t a stretch) but I just liked both of these names, and thought they suited eachother. As others have said, the nicknames really win out and Sophie is now mostly “Sophielein” (you can add the diminutive ‘lein’pronounced line, to any name to make it an endearment, and Sebastian is ‘Meister Proper’ (which is the German brand name for Mr. Clean but is literally translated to be Master Proper because he is sometimes such a snotty boy. I also really like Bismarck Bailey for your new addition – I think the full name has a good ring to it.
Boy or girl … whichever – pick the one that speaks to you no matter the sex.
Sorry for the long post (my first ever). Absolutely love your work.

  109. we had a schnauzer. She definitely did not shed, though she was a little yappy. We called her Gretchen. (We went with the German theme, too) She had a set of puppies, a boy and a girl (she was the runt, so she just couldn’t fit too many in her womb, I guess) and we named them Hansel and Gretel. I do like the name Schnitzel, though, which I saw someone suggest earlier.

  110. Ohh!!! I love mini schnauzers. I’m currently owned by a female black and silver MS. LOL
Names – Duchess, Countess, Edelweiss, Wilhemina or prefacing with Von …
Have fun with your puppy and enjoy those cute times cuz you’ll need it for the frustrating parts of raising puppies. 🙂

  111. I like your idea about not using human names for your dog. The comment I hear most often when I introduce myself (besides, “Thats such an unusual name, is it a family name?”) is, “Oh! I have a dog named Greta!” Thanks people; I don’t mind you used that name for your dog, but you didn’t have to tell me.

  112. My sister just mentioned today that she is naming her next dog Rick-Rack. I thought it was a cute idea!

  113. The German word for mustache = Schnurrbart, Bart for short. I always think that Schnauzers look like they have little mustaches (even the girls!)

  114. We had a mini schnauzer for 13 years. Biff was his name. When he was so little, he often tripped on his own feet and “biffed” to the ground. Ended up being a great name – Biffster, Biffaroni, McBiffy, Biffinator (also a character from Back to the Future). . . Think you’d like your own Biff.

  115. We have had schnauzers for years. They are very loyal to their family, One of my favorite names was for a mini we had and she was so small and petite we ended up calling her Itsy, she also had long eye lashes so it was fitting for her. You will be so happy with your choose in breed.(let your husband know I have bad allergy’s with other pets and have never had a problem with having these dogs in the house!)

  116. Hi,
    Wow!
I wish I could go to the Quilt Market, maybe one day!?
That picture is just the cutest, had my daughter & I ahhhing for ages. I like not human names too. My dogs (both springer spaniels & both nutty) are called conker & walnut. I think bobbin is a great name, it’s 2 syllables which I understand dogs cope with better, it’s relevant tothe sewing and it’s sooo cute just like the pup!
    sue

  117. Hi! Our first family doggy was a Mini Schnauzer. Our, Trixie, was a great dog. But, when she felt slighted, she got even. Such as when we had to leave one time and she ripped up my son’s glasses he left on the table – she did something like this a few times. Our vet said female dogs, like some female humans, get their noses out of joint. We were lucky, Trixie was not a ‘barking’ Schnauzer as Schnauzers usually do a lot. But, I would recommend the breed, but a male. We currently have two Cairn Terriers – male and female. The male, is more laid back and easy going, the female can be a little more challenging.

  118. liesle from the great movie Sound of Music who doesn’t love Liesle. And her cute little pinky.

  119. It’s not exactly German, but I’ve always wanted to name a cute little pup “Auggie” as in Auggie Doggie of ’70s cartoon fame.
    I vote Auggie!

  120. Daisy? 🙂
My aunt had one and her name was Dutchess. She was a great dog. She also had “SweetPea” and “JP” which stood for “Just Precious”. All of her Schnauzers were so sweet and great with kids. You will love it and so will your kids. Congratulations!

  121. Hi Heather~
I had a miniature schnauzer that I got when I was 4 (MANY years ago!). We had him until his death during my freshman year in college. He was a salt & pepper cutie named “Frisky” which truly did match his personality 🙂
Enjoy your new puppy and post some pix of him/her soon!
    Regards,
    Meredith aka Maggie Sue

  122. What a cute dog!
I was gonna suggest Schatzi (it makes me think of Chacci of Happy Days, even though it’s not pronounced the same way), but I guess that has been suggested a couple of times already. I also thought about Schnitzel which has been suggested, too (but then again, Schnitzel actually means ‘meat cutlet’ or something like that…).
Okay, now that I got to thinking about Happy Days, I’m gonna suggest Fonzie (or the Fonz!). Though it’s not German.
I hope you have/had a good time in LA, can’t wait to hear more of your new projects 🙂

  123. I vote for Weibchen (which means bitch, ie female dog) in german. And you can call her Weebee. Adorable!

  124. Or wait! Tiny in German is Winzig – and Winnie for short. Who doesn’t love a Winnie?

  125. We had a German Shepherd growing up name Kyser we called him Ky for short – I like Strudel – that is too cute!

  126. Leipzig (German city)
    Trinket
    Paisley
    Zipper
    Denim
    RickRack
    Pique
    Velvet
    Gingham
    -Just some thoughts- Cathy

  127. I too prefer male dogs. I also have male persian cats. Very lovable.
My pekingnese boy is named leonardo, but a different girl name would be Glitter Bug. I also had a black persian cat named Whodini we called her Who Do for short. I also like madeline. Good Luck with the new puppy. I do suggest to have about 3 names that you really like in mind. Then once you have the puppy in your home you’ll get a feel for which name suits her best.

  128. Name it Biz!! 🙂 We have a grey/black miniature schnauzer named Bizmark. We call him “Biz, Bizzer, Mr. Bizzer, Bizzy”– “Biz” was also one of the first words our son said. Schnauzers have GREAT personalitites!! You’re going to LOVE having one!!! YAY!

  129. I love DOGS!! As far as names go..I like really girly names like FiFi..but its not very creative! I was just surfing through some blogs today and came across yours! I don’t know if you would be interested but Donna at http://donnasintheattic.typepad.com/donnas_in_the_attic/ is creating a quilt out of fat quarters from people who visit her blog. And you can never go wrong with a quilt that is free! Besides it is going to have PINK in it which is one of my favorite colors! Hope you have a wonderful SATURDAY!

  130. How exciting!! We have a male mini schnauzer named Max and he is the smartest, sweetest dog I’ve ever owned. I always had large breed dogs before and I’ll never go back — no shedding & easy to bring along anywhere. We love our male — easier on the lawn and not as barky as Max’s two schnauzer girlfriends across the street. Each pup has their own personality though. Max is laid back and lets DD dress him up in all sorts of garb. I can see some fabulous new Fresh Cut doggie couture in futre blog photos!! Have fun, and enjoy your new family member! Oh, and I loved the ‘Schatzi’ suggestion, with the Fraulein bit… too cute.

  131. We had two Schnauzers, assumed to be brother and sister, that were adopted from SPCA. They’re names were Hansel and Gretel so those names get my vote! They have both passed over the rainbow bridge but they WONDERFUL companions for over 13 years. You won’t regret choosing this breed. (By the way, the dog choose you!)

  132. Hi Heather. I agree with Crystal, love the name Schnitzel. Please please please go with this one. We lived in Germany for 4 years while my DH was stationed there (Air Force) and Schnitzel was definitely a profound word there. My favorite schnitzel was one with a fried egg on top! LOL
I also wanted to let you know that I picked out my puppy from the litter when she was only 3 weeks old. I know they are so tiny and hard to pick out personalities, but my little one sucked a hicky on my chin as soon as I picked her up…..she was MINE!!!!
Can’t wait to hear what name you pick out, I know it will be cute, just like the puppy.
    Good luck!
    Roxie

  133. My cousins dog is named Seren. (short for serendipity)I thought that was a clever name chosen! Good luck choosing a name for your puppy.

  134. A boy and a girl- I like themes- for example I named my 3 yorkies after presidents: Lincoln (boy), Franklin Roosevelt (boy) and my girl is named Madison (after James Madison). So for a boy and girl, I’d go with Fred & Ginger, Franklin & Eleanor, Ricky & Lucy, Fred & Eithel, etc. I think you get the idea! Good luck-they are adorable!

  135. Grew up with three mini schnauzers: Schatzi, Liebchen and Hansel. They are charming dogs – lots of energy but a little too high strung for me so I now have three West Highland White Terriers. Westies are a bit more mellow and less “vocal”… Good luck! Puppies are such fun!

  136. Hi Heather! Luv your puppies…your were looking for name suggestions… how ’bout Fritz and Gerti?

  137. Im not sure if it has been mentioned, and you may have already named them, but how about Hanzel & Gretel?
They are adorable. My first dog (my present for my 12th birthday) was a Miniature Schnauzer!
