Outshined

Familiar, I know, but I thought Elijah’s doll blanket deserved its
own post.  He really sewed it by himself and saw it to completion,
asking me every day to show him how to do the binding.  We were swamped
with family in town there for a while and let’s just say, he was
impressively patient.  EdollquiltHe really
wanted to know how to do that binding.  He even learned how to do
perfect little corners.  All of those pieces and details, and that long
wait for binding directions, then he handed it over to me with ten
minutes of hand-stitching to go (tacking the binding down) and said,
"Here mom, you can finish it."

Ha!  I’m mightily impressed that he made it that far.  Elijah,
here’s to your stick-to-it-ed-ness!  It’s a rare ten-year- old boy who
will put so much tender thought into a handmade gift for his little
sister.  What a guy!

Oh, and I was looking back over the other doll blankets I made last
Spring and saw this mention of Shear Genius.  I forgot to tell you guys
that I had an elevator conversation with the winner of the show while I
was in Vegas last month.  He consequently missed his floor and had to take an
elevator back down.  Whoops.

I have a lot of little asides like that that have backed up on me
lately.  I think a catch-up post is in order.  Bits and bobs of random
info — before it grows stale.  Hmmm.

  1. That is an amazing job for a ten year old boy, and such a lovely gesture too. *I* would be happy to make a quilt so lovely. Well done Elijah!

  2. Congrats to Elijah! That is fabulously cool! For so many reasons, only time will teach him! Lucky boy! I have been hesitating on starting on my own quilt, so a big thanks to Elijah! Inspiring me!

  3. I think the best thing about this story is the way Elijah cares for Charlotte. Kudos to Mom and Dad too! My kids are grown and still best friends…that warms my heart too! Great job big brother!

  4. I love it that he made her a doll quilt! She has a treasure now to love forever. My Brother was always good to me in that way- following me home after school and picking up my sweaters that I would drop- There’s nothing as wonderful as a Big Brother! (unless it’s a Big Sister!) Congratulations to Elijah!!! Awesome quiltie!

  5. I can’t believe he made that! I’m not saying, oh, for a 10-yr old it’s good….i’m saying, for ANYONE that’s awesome. Look at the creativity and skills you’ve cultivated in him. Way to go, mamacita.

  6. What a nice big brother! Great work Elijah!!
I think all boys should know how to sew (and cook too, for that matter). And girls should be able to change a tire in a pinch too!

  7. Stories like this always make my heart sing. It is so lovely that a little brother would work so hard for his sister and create something so precious–Elijah is my new little hero!

  8. Does anyone know of a good source (online would be great) for natural linen? I’ve looked extensively and am not coming up with anything. I have a TON of Freshcut that I’d like to combine with a nice taupey colored natural linen. Help!

  9. What a wonderful big brother he is! That quilt is so great, but what I admire most is the fact that he actually finished it – leaving a few minutes worth of hand stitching for you, was just to let you feel involved, I’m sure 😉 Well done Elijah!

  10. That is a great blanket and I am very impressed that he did that alone!
Hey Heather, what about Trash Ties? Did I miss it? I am dying to see these things already!!! 🙂

  12. Received a divine big bundle of your latest range of fabric from a friend – oh boy was I excited! The blue is the exact color of one of my couches! The bundle will become a quilt for that couch for my loved ones to snuggle under. Thankyou for providing such wonderful ‘raw materials’ to work with!

  13. You are a good Mom, Heather, to encourage this beautiful gift in your son and to have grown his heart into one that would want to give such a gift to his sister.
