She's gussied up and ready for her big debut. Meet Nicey Jane™, my
new fabric collection for Free Spirit. Nicey is sassy, sweet, and ready
to sew. In other words, check your local fabric store, as Nicey Jane
arrived this week.
These new prints are available in two color palettes. We'll call the pink/olive/tangerine palette Kissing Booth and the blue/gray/gold palette Porch Swing. Along with florals, geometrics, and stripes, there are also a handful of Nicey Jane cotton solids — which are batting their threads at me now, calling, "Sew with me, Heather. Forget that computer and run away with me."
In a couple of weeks, there will also be eight 58" wide laminated
cottons (similar to oil cloth, but light-weight and super-duper supple
— must touch). I'm excited that the finish is light-weight enough to
be gathered. Once I finish up my stationery design work this month,
I'm going to sew up a Smarty Girl book bag with the laminated cotton and give a full report. I also have some raincoat plans and a kid's booster seat to make.
(I never did show off my birthday bicycle,
did I? Nicey is doing the job for me now. Yep, that's my
pinkity-pink-ol bike there. I never would have guessed I'd go for a
pink bike. Would have guessed orange. Or khaki. Or bright yellow. I
love it though. Wait till you see the bicycle saddlebags I'm planning
to make out of this print — but in laminate. Oh yah.)
Back to the fabric, shall we?
The collection tells the story of small-town girl, Nicey Jane. Nicey
heads to the city on Friday nights to swing dance with her beau — but
not before hanging the laundry to dry & enjoying an afternoon
picnic on the farm. The prints are named for Nicey's story: Hello
Roses, Hop Dot, Swing Toss, Wash-Day Ticking, Welcome Road, Picnic
Bouquet, Slim Dandy, Dream Dot, Church Flowers, Pocketbook, and Lindy
Leaf.
(The Lindy Hop is my mom's favorite dance. She tried to teach me some moves on the family room rug when I was little. Tried. The Lindy is dang-tricky.)
Now for dessert, a little Nicey Jane video. Be patient with the resolution; I uploaded this piece to YouTube instead of hosting it on my own site so it can be shared, embedded in other blogs, watched a gazillion times, etc. I have Isaac to thank for the wink — you'll see.
For second dessert (what would a Hobbit
call a second dessert?), I believe I'm in the mood for a celebratory
giveaway. New fabric has arrrived — and it's Christmas time — a dangerous combination. So, three prizes! One $50 gift certificate and two $25 gift certificates to The Heather Bailey Store.
To enter, leave a comment. Tell us something fun, or interesting, or weird, or clever, or
something kind someone has done for you. Something like that. I do read all of the
comments. I'll go first (see comments).
Happy holidays, my friends. I'm off to stir some hot cocoa with a
candy cane and find myself a pair of slippers. It's cold outside.

When Elijah was in third grade, he did a report on wasps. One fact he uncovered in his research was that wasps supposedly taste a lot like pine nuts. We weren’t about to test the theory ourselves. What fool-scientist did? However, Elijah did package up little baggies of pine nuts to hand out to the class while he presented his report. I wonder how many kids actually tried them after the association was made. If wasps really do taste like pine nuts, does that mean pine nuts taste like wasps?
What a beautiful collection, Heather! Hmmm…something interesting? Well, today is the 29th anniversary of the day that John Lennon was shot in front of the Dakota in New York. You know how people can remember exactly what they were doing on a particular memorable date, like 9/11? I’m like that. I still remember my Mom coming in to wake me up on the morning of the 9th before my clock radio turned on so she could tell me before I heard it on the news. We had planned to go Christmas shopping in Exter that day, and I remember standing in a sad line at the record shop to buy my copy of “Double Fantasy’ that afternoon. Hard to believe it was 29 years ago…
Happy Holidays, Heather! Thanks for the opportunity to win a gift certificate to your store. 🙂
I am in the mood for sewing some presents – most probably some pillow covers. I am also starting plan my baking and can’t wait to smell all those nuts, cinnamon and other spices! My baby (youngest of 6) is turning 2 tommorrow, so I am making her a jumper for her birthday … she is so sweet and at the moment is cooking lunch with her plastic food and dishes. The other day she was holding a plastic dinosaur in her arms and said: “shhh, don’t cry …. everything is OK”
You MUST tell us which ones will be coming out in the laminate – I have been stalking around everywhere trying to find out!
Since it’s Christmas time (and my birthday time), I’m going to tell you my best gift story. For my 21st birthday, my friends got together and bought me a gift certificate to get a tattoo.
I am currently finishing the quilt that my hubby will get for christmas. He was allowed to pick the fabrics himself, so he is getting a Spiderman quilt. Your fabric is wonderful.
Kindness or Cindess as my 7 year old wrote is an every day occurrence here for this expat in France who cant speak the language well and misses every 2nd word said. People are very kind in helping me live my life, they accommodate my woeful french and try english and are enchanted by my boisterous boys. Yesterday we went to see Pere Noel, or Santa at a mall, my boys were worried that Santa wouldnt know where they now were and wouldnt come especially as he couldnt ask for directions as they would all be in French! Papa and his elves looked quizzically at my distressed 5yo and after a rapid french conversation, Pere Noel got up asked the photographer for a piece of paper and said to my son” Draw me map” so he did and Santa said in broken english.. “see now ok I will come!” great cheers all round even from the other parents in the que. That Christmas had been saved! and I think there turn would come! thanks Heather Its nice to tell a little story……..in english
The year after I graduated from college I came home from the daily grind of teaching middle school and found this message on my answering machine: “Hello, Katherine. This is so-and-so from your local fabric store. I just wanted to let you know that your grandmother has signed you up for smocking lessons. Your first class is Tuesday night.” Early twenties, no kids, no friends’ kids to smock for. I went anyway. I’ve been sewing and smocking at that shop once a week for the past ten years. That phone call changed my life! Thanks, Mammaw!
What lovely fabric! I am in love with the fresh vintage and elegant charm! I have made so many beautiful things out of your freshcut line. Including my favorite sewing stool upholstered with one of your prints.
so excited to buy some of your new line and see what other treasures I can make. 🙂
I’m excited to see the laminates…and would LOVE to know if you will be making a pattern for bicycle saddle bags….
When my kids were little (seems like a long time ago, now) I used to sneak a little sewing time here and there, making them clothing or stuffies or quilts. My kids knew all of the names of the traditional quilt blocks long before they could read!
Thanks for *sparking* this treasured memory!
For Christmas this year, I don’t have time to sew everyone up something handmade because of my new little one so I decided to be creative with a non sewing handmade gift! I bought vanillas beans in bulk for about $1 a bean, sliced them and placed them in jars filled with vodka. I’m giving friends/family homemade vanilla extract! Easy!
my husband just got me a day at the spa for my birthday! I can hardly believe it. He told me that I deserve a little time where I can relax and no one can ask anything of me. (I recently had twins to make 5 children.) Isn’t that the sweetest?
An act of kindness that I’m really appreciating involves a sewing machine. Mine is having some problems and I’ve been getting it repaired. My friend is loaning me her machine in the meantime so that I can finish up some gifts.
this new collection is sooo dreamy, i love it!!!
this year i’m doing tons of handmade gifts, but my most fun one is just making my niece a “kitchen collection.” she’s not quite 2, but is getting one of those retro looking wooden kitchens for Christmas, so i’m going to make her an apron and some accessories to go along with it! she loves standing at the dishwasher pretending to “cook” with me so i might even make us some matching ones on the days i’m nannying for her!
My favourite act of kindness I received was when I had my 4th bub..the house was trashed, i was so tired and my two gorgeous friends came and cleaned my house for me…better than any expensive baby gift…
What beautiful, beautiful fabrics, bringing a spot of summer back to dreary grey England! Ok something interesting or fun, hmmm, ok, last weekend my husband ahem ‘helped’ Father Christmas with his duties at the school fair, first child who comes in “How many reindeer do you have?”, my poor husband sits there trying to remember the lyrics to Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer for inspiration, “Um eight?” he goes, “Ok,” the girl goes “What are their names?”. Who knew you had to swot for the role?!
Nicey Jane is one sweet collection and I would LOVE to win some:>) Beautiful work. You have given seamstresses everywhere a new toy:>)
ooops, I forgot my nice thing to share! When I was newly married I had expressed an interest in learning pottery to my husbands grandmother. i went over to her house one day and on the way stopped at a yard sale where there was a potters wheel for sale. It was much more than I could afford and I told grandma about it when I got to her house. She got her purse and gave me the money and told me to go get it. It was gone when I got there but that sweet gesture meant the world to me!
Love it!! The new collection is beautiful! One day at recess a little girl in my class was yelling out “Soup”- I was confused and asked her to clarify. She informed me that I had mentioned “soup is a short name for Stuart.” It took me a minute to realize Stew is a short name for Stuart 🙂 She was just trying to get her friend’s attention. At least she understands synonyms 🙂
Love the new collection!
Tonight my daughter was acting out the Christmas story and she said, “Mommy, Kai can be Jophes and I will be Married!” (Kai is her little brother) Just loved how Joseph and Mary’s names came out! LOL
wow how cute and fresh! Now something interesting…. my 4 year old son has Autism and is completly non verbal, we’re taken him to many, many specialist with no joy. Until my youngest son started talking and now my 4 year old can say a few words, the very same first words of my youngest lol The competitive gene won through much to the surprise of said specialists lol
This story is going on my blog today:
On Friday a child brought candy cigarrettes on the bus. The kids ate and ate. Then one 5 year old little girl says to my 5 year old little girl “smoking is bad for your tonsils” (we can overlook a 5 year olds anatomy confusion). Faith (my daughter) asks her “What are tonsils?” and the girl opened wide to show Faith her tonsils. At the site of the tonsils Faith got sick…ALL OVER her brother Simon.
You should have seen the nurses Face when I went to pick them up. Trying SO HARD not to bust out laughing in front of them! Even Simon couldn’t help but laugh!
Love them all!!!
Today I got a package in the mail. It was something I ordered online. Only problem was that it was the wrong something. I emailed the sender and told them they got it wrong. They very quickly replied with an apology and told me they’d be sending the correct item asap. The part that made me smile is that they told me to go ahead and give the incorrect item to my favorite charity! I can’t wait to give it to a less fortunate child and make a Christmas dream come true. It is so wonderful to know that there are still kind people in the world who haven’t been overrun by the commercialization of Christmas.
One of the freshest new lines on the market. Love how it has a story. Lovely friend, Carrie, and I met through blogging. She’s a master appliquer and learned of a big 12-block applique project I started many years ago and never finished…2 blocks to finish…2 to be completely made. She wanted to finish them for me. I sent her a box and when she was done she returned it. It’s now quilted, the binding is done and I have some button finishing touches to complete. I’ll be sharing it on my blog soon. It’s a very special quilt and once of the nicest most generous things anyone has ever done!
You did say you wanted weird, right? I was at Swiss Days (a huge outdoor craft fair)and my mom and I were sitting at a table eating lunch. It was crowded and two men and two women asked if they could sit with us. We scooted over to make room, and one of the women remarked to me, “Oh, no. If you are sitting by my husband, you better guard your food.” We all laughed and continued eating, although the man sitting next to me WAS uncomfortably close. Table space was at a premium, and he kept scooting closer to me. After each scoot, he would say, “Are you okay?”, probably in response to me leaning away from him. I finished eating, and laid my fork down, and he leaned over and said, “Are you going to eat those cherries?” I glanced at my pie plate and said that I was finished. He proceeded to grab a potato chip from his plate, reach across and scoop up and eat a cherry from my plate. Then another, and another, until even the cherry juice had been scooped and gobbled. Just as I was thinking, enough’s enough, and we were getting ready to go, he leaned across me, looked at my mom and said, “Aren’t you going to eat your cookie?” We handed it over and scooted away post haste. So bizarre.
I love Nicey Jane, by the way. Jane would know how to handle some random stranger eating food off her plate. Me? Not so much!
I have a little sewing business on Etsy that I started a couple years ago of things I sew (a lot out of your fabric). Well, I was using this little cheap sewing machine from Walmart that was starting to die and I was spending most of my days crying over that thing trying to make it sew through 5 layers of fabric. I knew I needed a new one and the one I wanted the most was a Bernina. I convinced my husband that if he bought it for me I could pay it off in three months with my sewing business. (We didn’t have any money to spend on things like that at that time.) So he did and I worked so hard for one month to make enough to pay for part of it and I was having no luck. I felt terrible. It was getting to be Christmas time and he took me out to dinner and told be that I didn’t have to pay off the machine because he was giving it to me as a Christmas present. I just started crying right there. I had been so miserable knowing I would never be able to keep my promise to him. I knew he had to work extra hard at work to make up the extra money. I was so touched. He knew how much it meant to me. That was probably the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me! 🙂
So gorgeous! Something recently fun someone has done for me? My birthday was recently, like last Thursday, and my husband surprised me with an Anthro gift card and the promise to go shopping Friday night and out to dinner. On the way to Anthro I got the wild idea to ditch it all (shopping could wait) and go to Six Flags (it’s not often we have a sitter), even though we were in our best clothes, not a mitten or hat to be seen, he braved the freezing temps with me and we enjoyed some horrible hot cocoa and roller coasters. Together. It was amazing!
Very pretty new collection, Heather. Well, on Friday, my babies, my twin daughters will be 15, it seems like yesterday they were born, 5-1/2 weeks early but healthy. Now I take them on Friday to get their driver’s permit and they will be driving me around all the time. They are so excited! Me? Excited and a bit nervous.
I love it! My cute annecdote is that my son, who is 3, likes to rub my husbands back. He’ll just randomly get up and say, “I need to go rub Daddy’s back.” It’s too cute. I wish he felt that need with me!
Love love love the new collection!!
The other morning my kids were eating breakfast and my 10-year-old son asked, “Mom, have you ever heard of Weird Al Yankovic?” My 8-year-old daughter’s eyes got very wide and she said, “Hey! We’re studying him in music class!!” Feeling a little concern over the music curriculum, I asked what exactly they were learning about him. She said, “He’s the guy that wrote The Nutcracker Suite.” After explaining that Tchaikovsky was actually the name of that particular composer, she shrugged her shoulders and said, “OK. But he WAS weird.”
I just lit a pine scented candle, have Chris Isaac playing (Speak of the Devil) and am going to clean!! yay for me!
Merry Christmas Heather and congrats on the new line! My favorite christmas event is a beautiful horse carriage parade all lit up with lights trotting through the streets. Beautiful!
Hi Heather- first off -I have to say I love your new line of fabrics. And the pink bike but the Lindy hop looks painful!
For something interesting-hmmm,thinking….maybe along the same subject?
I took dance classes as a little girl in Hollywood~there were lots of stars’ children, child actors and future stars in our classes!I have a program with photos from one of our dances. I won’t name names 😉
Is that interesting enough to win? I sure hope so !! 🙂
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh these are awesome!!! I’m singing.. “The Weather Outside is Fightfall, Let me SEW, Let me SEW , Let me SEW… oh I wish I had these fabrics to play with while I am snowed in! THANKS.. Love them!
They are beautiful!! I would love to have some of your new fabric! My funny story…my 6 year old got a conduct grade in class one day recently for talking (he is Mr. Social). After I picked him up he asked if he was grounded. I told him yes, no tv or video games for the rest of the day. He looked at me seriously and said “When I am a dad, I will not be mean. I will be the nicest dad ever and never ground my kids.” Hmmm, I wonder how many times he will eat his words.
Thanks for the giveaway!
Something kind someone just did for me…
For the entire seven plus years that my husband and I have been married, one of us has been in school. Each year I get really sad at Christmastime because we barely have any money for gifts – even to make most of them. So this year when I was home for Thanksgiving, my brother paid me a large amount of money to “clean” his house. Granted, it was nasty, but it was really a blessing to me.
BTW, I love your new fabrics.
oh so pretty! It has been sooo cold here the last few days and I am so hoping it will cloud up and we’ll get snow! I don’t even know that it is in the forcast…last year we had more snow than I can ever remember and a white Christmas. It did mess up some plans (like no church for Christmas), but it was so beautiful!
We Celebrated Sinterklaas this weekend with my family and when my daughter went to sleep at her other grandparents house she took a sert of cincerella dolls with her for her nightstand. My uncle and his husband started beaming and confessed they had bought it in New York this summer because they decided she would love it. The thought of these two man dragging this toy all over the atlantic ocean for my little girl just got me weepy..
I am so excited about this fabric! I have been patiently waiting for it to come out and now it is here! Don’t all parents think that their kids are clever?–Last night I was reading my 4 year old daughter her recent issue of highlights and there was one page that asked a bunch of different questions. One of the questions said “Name something warm.”–Chloe thought a bit and then got very excited: “I know, I know–Penguins keep their eggs warm.” I thought it was such a cute answer.
Congrats on your new fabric line, it is just beautiful!
Beautiful fabrics! Something interesting? I just found out I am pregnant with my third child! Yay!
I love Nicey Jane! Some just dropped through my letter box this morning, destined for my sister’s Christmas gift! And there is more on the way, I just couldn’t help myself when I saw your Christmas coupon offer…
This morning I took a trip into town on the bus with my baby (well, almost a toddler now!). We took our new stroller that had never been out before. It was quite a wrestling match to fold it up with a little girl and her diaper bag clutched under one arm, but a very kind lady (quite burdened with shopping herself) helped me get everything onto the bus. I love my friendly little town!
I’ve been so excited about these fabrics!! Your talent is so inspiring, Heather! My 3 year old daughter loves to draw pictures for one of my brothers. I told her she could put some of the pictures in his Christmas card. Now, whenever she draws something, she says she is going to put it in his “basement card”.
I went out Saturday, thrifting. I had been looking for the perfect fabric for a shower curtain in my newly remodeled bathroom (BTW, I think this new line is IT!), thought about vintage sheets, and asked my Army son to join me. He did, and he convinced my two youngest ones to come. We hit two thrift shops, an alternative shop, a used bookstore and had lunch together and it was WONDERUL! No arguments. No pushing to leave. They actually helped each other decide things about purchases and appeared to enjoy themselves. They are 24 & 19 yo twins. It has been YEARS since I have been gifted with such a lovely day. Only regret is that the 4th kid was in AK and couldn’t join us!
Such beautiful fabric! I love your designs. A sweet story I would like to share with you is from my 11 year old son. He paid me the nicest compliment over the weekend… that he looks forward to making things when he’s with me and not having to worry about making messes. I was so relieved to hear that since my concern was that he’s getting near pre-teen years and being creative and crafty might not fall into his definition of ‘cool’. I’m hoping I can spur his creativity for many many years to come!
Oh i am so in love with nicey jane. Can’t wait to try it out on clothes for my daughter or a new bag for myself.
one great thing someone has done for me lately is my wonderful hubby cleaning, cooking, laundry, doing the dishes (YUCK) and playing w/our 2 yr old all weekend so i could work on a quilt!! it was just so lovely to retreat back in my sewing room !!
congrats on your new fabrics….you amaze me with each collection and how the last one is just as creative as the first one!
I absolutely love it! Oh the images your new collection create in my mind! I cant wait to get ahold of some 🙂
Love the new fabrics – so cheery!
I have a nine year old daughter and I love it that we still have fun times together. Children grow up so much faster these days and I know that all too soon, she won’t want to spend as much time with her mom. I cherish the times when we can hang out, giggling and enjoying each other’s company.
Let’s see something nice. My family and I are moving just up the road right after Christmas so we’re not decorating this year. When my mom found out about this she promptly went and bought us a little Christmas tree made of rosemary and decorated it with tiny ornaments. She knows how much I love Christmas and how much it kills me not to be able to decorate this year. That woman, she’s awesome!
the other day, we got a smidge of snow in Houston (the weather man called it a STORM..ha!) and when my son (4) and I were on our way home from school, he said, “I hope I see some SNOWdeer!!” I asked if he meant “reindeer” and he said, “no, snowdeer! it’s snowing, not raining!” D’oh.
Today a friend did something kind for me. Going for a walk with the dog, I forgot to take my key with me. A friend who lives nearby has a duplicate and even though she is pretty stressed at the moment, she came and brought me my keys so that I wouldn’t have to stand outside while it rained. I’m going to make her a card and a little gift to thank her 🙂 Best wishes from Germany!
OOOOOOOOOOOh! Love the new fabric. So what to share…hmmmm….we’re in the middle of moving. Not the most fun thing to be doing this time of year. But despite the fact that we’re moving a week before Christmas, we went and got our Christmas tree last week and decorated it. It sits amid the boxes and the chaos. A bright spot in this craziness!!
My mom and I are working on a gift for my cousin for Christmas. She is getting my old sewing machine, which my mom and grandma helped me pick out when I graduated from college (almost 10 years ago). It still has the masking tape marks where she wrote the stitch lengths and seam allowances she thought were best for quilting. I am just happy to have another family member interested in sewing! We are including a lot of the favorites – things people should get with their first machine – nice flat pins, good scissors, etc. I should also make a fun pin cushion or cover to go with it!
Christmas Day is my mother’s birthday, and since she’s passed away last year I’ve not decorated or been in the spirit of things, but this year I have felt a shift in things, maybe it was turning 50 this year, I’m not sure. But what I am sure of is that we are here to love one another and to love our creator and that gives me much peace. By the way, this year I have two trees decorated, one is for my mama! Merry Christmas !
My son is named Norman, after my father, and his son is also Norman. We often refer to them as Big Norm and Little Norm. One day after my grandson turned 3 I called him “Little Norm” to which he replied “Grandma, I’m not little anymore! But I’m not big yet either. After a pause he added, “I guess now you should call me “Medium Norm’! So sweet! I love those little nuggets of conversation that reveal how they think!
Love this fabric line!!!
Loving the new fabrics!!
The nicest thing someone has done for me lately is baby sit so mommy and daddy could have a date night. Sorry! mine isn’t as exciting as everyone else’s..
🙂 Thanks
Here’s something interesting: The owl is the only bird to drop its upper eyelid to wink. All other birds raise their lower eyelids. In case you ever see an owl winking at you.
This Christmas season has found me not wanting to do the usual decorating. This will be the first time that one of my children won’t be home for Christmas. Since this is the child who loves all things Christmasy, I’ve been dreading getting out all the decorations. My youngest child got all the decorations out of the attic, decorated the tree, and helped my return all the boxes to the attic- all in one day. He has lightened my load and freed me up to enjoy the season.
Oh I simply adore your bicycle! Reminds me of my favorite bicycle ever, I wish I still had it today. It was given to me for Christmas when I was about 6 and it was rainbow colored. Had the most beautiful banana seat with a picture of a rainbow and clouds I think. I went everywhere on that bicycle and felt so grown up! I remember to this day riding it down the dirt road feeling as though I were flying in the wind!
Thank you for bringing back a great memory! I hadn’t thought of that bicycle in years!
What a wonderful collection of fabrics! love the music and looooove the pink bike!
Love the new fabric line, and love the dress she is wearing in the bike photos. Is there a pattern for it? I have something to share that is nice but hasn’t happened yet. My cousin is having all of the cousins kids over Saturday night for a few hours (not an official count but probably about 20 or so). She is feeding them all dinner, then depending on weather a neighborhood lights walk or a movie. She wants the rest of us to be able to shop, go on a date, take a nap, whatever without having to pay a sitter. I wonder if she knows how sweet this is, to not worry about paying a sitter when most of us are scraping to make Christmas work. I should let her know.
Hi Heather. Your new collection is just beautiful. While my sewing machine was recently broken, my mother who also sews a lot, loaned me hers. It doesn’t get much kinder than that! When I sew the zigzag stitch, my little boy watches carefully and calls it “going zigzag”. Then he runs around the room in short little back and forth bursts. Ha ha! Love you so much. You inspired my blog. And your fabric is always my favorite; no one else is even close. And I’m not just saying that.
I have a really great story about something kind that someone has done for me recently. It’s a little long, sorry!
I had been having a lot of problems with sewing machines over the past few months (I am currently on my fourth since May). The first three were vintage machines, two of which broke because of the ever-prevalent 1970s plastic gear rot and one just didn’t want to stitch properly. My grandparents gave me the third one for my birthday in October after the other two broke, but within two weeks one of it’s gears had shattered.
I should preface this part by saying that I’m a graduate student and don’t have the money to buy myself a new machine. I saw a nice Janome on Craigslist for a good price and my Mum said she would buy it for me, but I wouldn’t get any Christmas presents. I was a little sad about not getting any Christmas presents, but sewing makes me happy and so I was okay with that. I posted about my sewing machine woes on the day I was supposed to go and see the machine, and mentioned that I was going to see the it.
About half an hour later I received an email from Cathi, one of my blog readers who is also a quilter and lives in the same city as me, saying that she had an almost brand-new Janome that she had only used for an hour before deciding that she preferred hand quilting to machine quilting. She told me that she had held on to it in the hopes that she could give it to someone, and had decided that that someone was me! I was flabbergasted! I went to see Cathi and tried to give her some money or something for it, but she wouldn’t take anything. She said all she wanted was to see the projects I made with it on my blog.
Genevieve (my Janome) and I have been going strong for almost two months now without any problems and Cathi and I have become friends! I can never tell Cathi how much her kindness has meant to me (although I’ve tried) and I feel a swell in my heart every time I think about her and the great gift she’s given me!
My husband is taking me to Disneyland tomorrow! Christmas at Disney, Can’t wait. I adore your bike and I need your fabrics.
That France story from Joh made me cry!
My husband cooked dinner for the kids and me last night while I shopped. It was very nice!
I love the fabric! So, here is an interesting and sweet little story about how my daughter Lula got her name. My husband (Reid) grew up on a street named “Lula” and even as a kid, always said he wanted to name his daughter that. To make it even better, when Reid and I were first dating in college, our moms remembered that we had “met” before! When my mom was pregnant with me, and Reid was a baby, his mom had put their house on the market. My mom went to look at the house to buy and met little baby Reid (and I guess I did too since I was in the womb). So, technically, our love began on Lula street. Anyway, we thought it was the sweetest and cutest name, so that is how our little daughter Lula got her name.
My six-year old daughter is wearing my socks to school today because I didn’t want to wake her little brother by digging around in their room for socks that actually fit her.
Can’t wait to get my hands on this new line! It’s fabulous!
Your bike is so cool! One of my first Christmas’ with my dh, then boyfriend, he bought me a bike. He is really into wrapping presents and does interesting things with his packages, like boxes in boxes in boxes so that it is more fun to unwrap. I told him he didn’t need to wrap the bike. He did. It took him 2 rolls of wrapping paper, 4 rolls of tape and hours. When he was done, I could ride the bike, while it was still wrapped. Do I need to say it also took me hours to unwrap it? 😉
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the dress in the bike pictures! Is it made from a pattern we can buy? It’s fabulous! I’m just a poor college student, and I want to start making some of my own clothes!
Beautiful! Cant wait for the laminated cottons! A story that still makes me smile 2 years on – I was catching a bus home from work one day when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with my little girl – the bus was super crowded and a heap of people got on at the same time as me – including more than a few who pushed past me pretty roughly to grab the last seats. I figured I would have to stand when the biggest, meanest, scariest looking guy (complete with leathers / piercings / biker tattoos) stood up and said ‘Excuse me Miss, you look like you need a seat’. He walked over put his arm out like a true gentleman, guided me to his seat and wished me a great day. A great lesson in not judging a book by its cover!
Ok, looks like my chance of winning is pretty slim but as an eternal optimist, I’ll tell about my latest act o seeing kindness I received: an aekserly friend of my mother-in-law, who used to love to sew gave her fancy schmancy serger to my mother-in-law when she got too old to sew…and my mother-in-law gave it to ME when she decided I would use it way more than her so now I’m in sewing heaven.
Beautiful! My little interesting factoid:
I KNEW I was going to marry my husband (then boyfriend, obviously) when he went out of his way to deliver an orange pen and cream soda to me while I was studying for finals. He made a note of two completely insignificant things I had been wanting, bought them, and brought them to me to brighten my day.
Last year I was newly pregnant with my second baby and had terrible morning sickness. I wanted to make an advent calendar for my 3 year old but was so, so sick that I couldn’t make it happen. A friend made an advent calendar by hand and delivered it to my husband’s office by Dec. 1 so that we’d have it in time! It was so, so thoughtful.
oooo, this fabric is making me salivate. in a good way, I promise. we live in student housing and i can’t wait for some of your laminate to cover our dismal dining room table. hooray!
so now for a Christmas funny: my husband was discussing Jesus with my 5-year-old the other day.
He said, “Zane, did you know that Jesus is the only person in the whole world who hasn’t ever done anything wrong?”
Zane looked at him in a way only a you’re-so-wrong, i-know-it-all 5 year-old could and said, “but Pops, Jesus BROKE the bread. we learned it at church!”
thanks, church. 🙂
and thanks for the chance heather! have a great day.
Love all the new fabric! My husband brings me a glass of ice water every morning before I get out of bed because I’m always thirsty when I get up (and I don’t like room temperature water…) It’s not huge, but it’s a sweet thing!
The song on the slide show is so cute, and so suits the fabric.
My favourite dance is the jive, I think it’s similar to the lindy hop.
Love Nicey Jane and I am going to order that smarty girl bag pattern today, I love it!
One of our traditions is the annual cookie party with the same 3 friends every year (6 and 7 yrs old) and we bake and decorate cookies and they take them home plus some extra. This year I decided to bake them each a gingerbread house and provide the candy needed to decorate it at home with their family and siblings. I was totally stressed over the bag for the candy, because there was so much of it, my daughter said “I know, why don’t we just give everyone a brown paper bag with candy.” I was horrified for an instant but then I realized she was right, the bag was not going to make a difference, they were going to love it anyway! This is the same child that told me not to stress when I was assembling the houses because it will be just fine everyone would love them and the whole point is just to have fun. I really need to listen to her more often! No wonder I love to sew for her so much!
As the 13th grandchild of a quilter, I was the 13th to ask her to teach me to quilt. My cousins had all feigned interested until their quilt was done, never to quilt again.
I tricked my grams into teaching me by buying the ugliest quilt I could find at the department store. I told her that I loved it and I didn’t need to learn how to quilt because I could just buy the most beautiful quilts anyway, for just a few hundred dollars.
Seeing the “beautiful” quilt on my bed, she turned to me and said, “come over on Saturday, I’ll teach you!”
That was 10 years and 60 quilts ago!
Quilting and sewing with my grams for the last 10 years was some of the best times of my life.
Teaching me to sew and quilt was the best gift I’ve ever received.
And it was from my grams.
I miss her!
The other day as I was making breakfast, my 2 year old started a funny conversation with the eggs: As we looked in the refridgerator she said, “Where are you egg? Oh I see you. . .Hello EGG! Are you fine???” Then after breakfast when she was all cleaned up she ran out of the kitchen yelling, “Good-bye Egg!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!”
My husband got up extra early this morning (4:30) and shoveled our driveway. He said now I could stay inside all day and sew if I wanted to. What a sweetie!
I love the new fabric line, especially looking forward to the laminates. This Christmas I am working on a quilt for my son. I’m embarrassed to say that it has been my priority for about six years to make it for him for Christmas, and always I procrastinate and run out of time. It’s a simple block quilt made out of old Pendleton wool shirts. We have blizzard warnings here for the next two days, so no excuses. (If the power goes out I even have my grandmother’s old treadle machine.) I’ll be happily holed up in my sewing room with Christmas music and lots of hot cocoa. It will get done!
You’re a wonder, Heather Bailey!!! I am a labor and delivery nurse, and I work really long shifts…and when I got home last night, my 5-and 2-year olds had made “I love mama” pictures…those kind of simple sweetnesses are what it’s all about!!
Such gorgeous fabrics! This week I’m really loving my husband because he took such great care of me this weekend. I ran a eight and a half mile race Saturday morning. I was out of commission for the rest of the weekend and he made sure my every need was met. Love that man!
I love everything you create! A sweet act of kindness I tenderly remember occurred when my husband and I were poor, owners of one broken-down- beyond- repair car, college students in Utah. I was eight months pregnant with our first and my little sister (just 18 months younger and best friend was getting married in AZ). There was absolutely no way we would be able to attend the wedding. Another college student (angel on earth) from work figured out my situation and offered me her sweet classic car to make the long drive-!!! Bless her kind heart, I was able to be home (arriving in style) for the Dec. wedding and for Christmas too!
Hi Heather. Love these fabrics. Yummy. My birthday is tomorrow and when I think back on past birthdays, one of the nicest things everyone ever did for me is take me to Disneyworld to experience Christmas there. It was one of my lifetime dreams.
Happy Sewing and Merry Christmas.
Regina
Something really nice happened to me last Friday. I was sitting getting my hair done when I looked out the window and the meter maid was about to give me a ticket. I waved to her that I was coming with money and she let me come out and do it. That was so nice as they never let that happen if they see and expired meter you get a ticket. That was the nicest thing to happen in a long time. And yes I do love the new fabric line and the pink bike.
A little note about the power of beauty—AKA Nicey Jane . . .
I’m new to sewing. It’s something I’ve come to share with my mom and aunt and we’re just enamored with some of these modern vintage prints. Well, my aunt and I were in the midst of a pretty major disagreement and both had some majorly hurt feelings revolving around this. We weren’t really talking. However, the night I found Nicey Jane (FINALLY) online, I couldn’t help but shoot her an email with the link so she could see them, too. Nicey Jane helped break the ice between us again . . . and things are now OK.
Thanks!
So pretty! Love your new collection and can’t wait to sew with some of it. We just found out that after have FIVE girls in a row, that baby number six is a BOY!! So excited around here to mix things up a bit. Merry Christmas!
I like your new fabric line. I recently made a Snow White dress for my 4-year-old grand daughter, and when she saw it she very sweetly said, “I think Ruthie (her other dolly) would like a Cinderella dress” ! I had no plans at the time to do that, but guess who picked up the fabric for a Cinderella dress this week?
I am so excited about your laminate fabric. I have recently made chair cushions for my dining room and less than a week later my sweet 2 year old poured an entire bowl of chicken soup over one. Chair cushions are impossible to clean! So I was searching the internet for laminate fabric or ready made laminate chair cushions! I can’t wait to use your fabric to brighten my room (and keep it clean 😉
Love Your New Line!!!!
these are so YUMMY! What a great collection!
We’re in for a big snow storm today…this week has really been the first time it’s snowed. Lucky for me one on my classes was canceled, and I’m still hanging in there for a snow day tomorrow. What will I do with all that free time during dead week?? Well I should be studying, but I’d much rather be sewing! I still have a few Christmas gifts in the making!
The biggest kindnesses that I receive come from my children–my four-year-old son has a knack for knowing just when I need his special kindness. He’ll climb up on my lap, lay his hand on my cheek and say, “Mom, you and me belong together.”
What more do you need?
Today we are expecting a winter blizzard here in MN. I guess that mean homemade chicken noodle soup and a warm blanket by the fire for me. Thanks for the giveaway!!
Your new fabric line is just stunning Heather! Huge congrats on another amazing line! I’m thankful for a good hubby – who went and cleared the snow from an old ladies house yesterday – and who is traveling now and I hope that he will be safe.
A friend of ours took our portrait this weekend, which was really great timing since my MIL has requested one for Christmas and we didn’t want to have to go to Penney’s to get it done!
Let’s see, I am in the mood to get a little more sewing done if my little munchkin would take a nap for longer than 50 minutes in the afternoon, but even if he doesn’t we have been having wake-up hot cocoa with plenty of whip cream and sugar sprinkles when he wakes up. Might be my favorite part of the day!
My musical girl…last night we were watching a movie and she starts yelling ‘cheaters, cheaters’ at the tv when we all told her to chill out she explained that they were using the same background music as another movie, shocked giggling ensued–who hears that stuff?? Her! She can tell every movie she has watched and which part by the background music.
and because I can’t talk about one without the other…My science girl…who has the most extensive insect collection on microscope slides that she shows off to friends and grandparents alike which goes like this “that is the sun spider that bit mom, not venomous””that is the stinger from a tarantula hawk wasp that almost stung dad””that is the female dobson fly that mom killed””that is the arm bone from our newt who died” at this point people are backing away from her saying ‘oh yea isn’t that nice’…chuckle
hmmm. there have been LOTS of kind people in my life…who have done amazingly sweet things for me and my family. However, what stands out today is the Valentines Day card my husband MADE for me our first year of marriage (almost 12 years ago!). He made it out of whatever he could find at his office…cardboard, white out and highlighters. It’s the sweetest thing and I still have it.
Think Nicey Jane would swoon over it too? Love the collection and hope to be able to sew with it before the baby comes!
Okay, here’s something a little weird: my house smells like onions. I made Peppercorn Chicken last night with caramelized onions and I can’t get rid of the smell. So I’m burning two candles – one that smells like a Christmas tree and one that smells like pumpkin pie. Wish me luck!
Love Nicey Jane! Love the Nicey Jane model too! She is stunning. (I guess it is still Thanksgiving in my mind because I just typed, she is stuffing)
Anyway… some facts to help you out. These were or are true.
It is illegal in Arizona to refuse someone a glass of water.
In Mohave County, there is an ordinance that says if you are caught stealing a bar of soap, you must wash yourself in it until it is gone.
In Arizona, you may only defend yourself against a burglar with the same weapon that he (or she) is using.
Here’s a Christmas one:
Donner and Blitzen were originally called Dunder and Blixem and Rudolph was created for the Montgomery Ward department stores.
i want this fabric for some new little baby booties i’m planning on trying with my mom over christmas!
In high School I was in the talent show with my twin sister and her boyfriend’s band. She sang Hole’s “Doll Parts” and I was her back up singer. I bet you didn’t know there were back up singers in the band Hole! The teachers were like, what IS this?!
I’m so excited about your new line. Your ideas and creativity is just amazing!
These lovely fabrics are so nice a spring like…
…something sorely lacking here in Alberta, Canada today. This is something that I didn’t miss when I was living in other parts of the country/world…today it is minus 33 degrees Celcus. That is so cold that my van didn’t start this morning. Good thing we Homeschool! (and no, we don’t have a dog sled to use as back up here in Canada!) 🙂 We are all staying tucked in nice and tight in our warm home!
In May my women’s group is doing a tea party. A real Tea Party with tea and crumpets and little cute sandwiches. Every woman who “adopts” a table brings in their own China and table decorations to set their table. A lot of people do themed tables. I have a strong desire to do a Christmas themed table, even though the event is in May, BUT, something I haven’t told anyone, is that I may want to go totally retro and do my table up ala 50’s vintage and even dress the part 🙂 My little secret, so sssshhhhhsss.
When we moved across the country our good friends made our daughters “goodie bags” full of fun stuff to keep the girls occupied on their long journey. Those bags were lifesavers!
Ohh something nice… My husband and i got married just about a year and a half ago and after moving home last Christmas, we didnt have our own place (living with my parents… not fun) so we couldnt decorate for Christmas! This year my Aunt who sells Christmas trees gave us a beautiful tree to celebrate our 1st Christmas in our own house! it has been really special so far and we havent even gotten to December 25th yet!
My five year old is always interesting! My older daughter was explaining to her friend how to do plank exercises and she said “you raise yourself up on your forearms.” My little Max piped up and said “hey! You don’t have four arms. You only have two!”
Thanks for the chance – the new fabric is gorgeous!!!
Took my 3 year old to meet Santa for the first time yesterday. He asked her what she wanted him to bring her for Christmas then looked at me REAL confused. She has consistantly been asking for a “horse with a line under my legs for my bum to sit on. with a unicorn” I love the way young kids describe things. What she wants is a unicorn hobby horse.
What gorgeous fabric!
In the midst of trying to prepare for Christmas, my daughter’s 5th birthday (on Sunday) and recovering from a trip alone with my DH, I babysat for a friend’s 9 month old daughter so that she could help out in our children’s preschool classroom. The baby was particularly tired (as was my 19 month old DS), so I put my son down for his nap and Ekaterina fell asleep on my chest for 2 hours. What a delicious way to spend my morning! I caught up on TV shows on the DVR and was forced to slow down and relax.
I’d like to thank my husband for letting me have Sundays for my creative outlet. He watches the kids and lets me have the whole day for sewing. I treasure those days and his generosity. I make a much better mommy after I have some time to juice up my creative brain!
Love the Nicey Jane collection! I have been meaning to comment on your felt as well, about which I am very excited.
Let’s see, something interesting… Like everyone else in crafty circles probably, I am scrambling to finish (or even start) all my handmade Christmas gifts. Most important for me this year is to spoil a special friend who always has the kindest, most thoughtful gestures. We just moved away from her and her sweet family a few months ago and I miss her dearly. This is the friend who always brings cookies she’s baked to a playdate, shares the precious veggies grown in her garden, splits a nice chunk of vintage fabric she’s just bought with you, and generally inspires me to be a better, more attentive friend and person.
Thank you for the giveaway and happy holidays!
Now I am REALLY hoping this baby is a girl…we’ll name her Jane and dress her in these new prints! 😉
I am so excited about Nicey Jane and can’t wait to get my hands on it! This past Friday I shrugged off work and spent the snowy day – in Houston, TX!- working on my first quilt using the last of my Freshcut fabrics and sipping hot chocolate loaded with marshmallows with my 3yo daughter. It was so beautiful. And to think it’s going to be near 70 today.
Yesterday we were picking up our Christmas tree and decorating it. As we were putting on ornaments, my three year old daughter, who was already sad that live trees came only in green, sighed, looked at me, and said, “Mom, we really need more pink and purple things for our tree”. I guess I’m going shopping today!
Good Morning Heather! What a beautiful collection!!! My mom called me last night to tell me she’s making my daughters’ teachers gifts this year. That’s REALLY nice seeing as how between my two girls, there are two teachers, four classroom aids, a speech therapist, occupational therapist and FOUR bus drivers! Sounds like a Christmas song!!! So you can see how I’m excited I don’t have to think/create/buy anything for them! WOOHOO!!! Happy Holidays!!!
Here is something random. As I child I was not allowed to have Pop Tarts or anything similar. My parents were anti-sugar cereal or anything fun, lol. As a teen, I hated Pop Tarts. Then, when I had children, I still hated them even though my boys LOOOOOVED them.
Now here I am, a 32 year old mom of 3 and I just finished my daily blueberry Pop Tart.
Hard to say if my like for them developed out of ease (they are right there!) or actual “like”, but whatever it is… it is.
Random.
Love the fabrics and can’t wait to sew with them.
I moved to Seattle in the middle of fall the year after I graduated college. I was poor poor poor and my apartment was basement level and icy cold and the warmest blanket I had was an old child-sized sleeping bag. I had a very large piece of heavyweight flannel to use for backing, and I started in on a scrappy quilt top. Necessity fueling my piecing fervor I think it may have been the fastest pieced quilt top ever. The day after I found a local quilt store and bought some batting, I got a package slip from UPS. I ended up riding the bus nearly 40 minutes out to a UPS sorting facility to pick up a mysterious package. It was a rather large and awkward rectangular box and I had no idea what it contained or who it was from since it had shipped directly from an Overstock.com warehouse. I lugged it all the way home again on the bus and only then opened it up to discover a queen size down comforter. It was a birthday gift from my aunt arrived a week or so early. (Five years later I still haven’t finished that scrap quilt.)
When I first moved out on my own, I got sick – stay home from work for 3 days sick. I asked my dad to rent me a couple of movies, because I was bored. He was worried about picking out movies that I would like so instead he bought me a collection of Shirley Temple classics. It was so sweet, because I know he still looked at me like I was his little girl in ringletes!
I love this new line of fabric! My husband bought me a surger this fall. I was hoping that I might get one next fall when my daughter was done with preschool and we weren’t making those big payments each month. He said “don’t wait”, I said “thank you, yeah!”
Happy holidays.
Gosh – I think I would HAVE to throw my computer out the window if I had a bundle of this fabric!! Can I say that the something nice someone did for me was send me a lovely gift certificate for the Heather Bailey store so I could have some fun with it too?! Oh – that would be a little psychic, so I will have to wait patiently!!
Thanks so much for putting in your earplugs, hunkering down, and hosting a meet and greet with Nicey Jane. I can’t wait to share her stories with my sisters and friends. We’re all so grateful for your continued inspiration! Merry Christmas!
The new fabric collection is wonderful!
The year my husband and I were moving across country just after Christmas, DH did not want to put up and Christmas tree or any decorations. I was very unhappy about this as this is my favorite time of the year. I came home from work one day to find my living room decorated and a beautiful Christmas tree. My FIL had bought me a tree and decorated. Although it has been 20 years, I will always remember him doing that for me. It turned a sad little Christmas into a happy one. I still have the angels and decorations.
I’m about to do some online fabric shopping to start some Christmas presents. I’m really behind, but I’m determined not to stress out and just have fun! (I’m going to buy some Nicey Jane!)
I love the new fabric line and continue to be amazed by your creative talent! Here’s my little story to share-
A few days ago while in the car, we were listening to “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” as sung by the Jackson 5. My sweet little four year old daughter piped up from the backseat and asked “Mommy, what are missile-toes?”
Merry (freezing) Christmas from the midwest! (I miss my Arizona home!)
I’m expecting my first kiddo in a few days, and my best friend from high school made a quilt for me! She’s one of the least-crafty people I know, but she knew how important handmade items are to me (I couldn’t even tell you how many sweaters and pairs of socks I’ve made for her over the years) so when she was unemployed for a number of months earlier this year, she decided she was going to learn how to quilt so she could make something for the baby. I was so touched!
Well, I don’t know how weird or exciting this is, but I’ve decorated my car for christmas. I’m not one to put anything on the outside of my car like bumperstickers and such. I think there are definately some very clever stickers out there, but I just can’t bring myself to stick on on my bumper. Anyhoo, on sunday after we went out and cut our christmas tree I happend upon a big red stuffed nose and fuzzy antlers for my car, so I had to have them. My Excursion is a brownish color, so now it looks like a big reindeer. Makes me happy, but my 9 year old says it’s “dorky”. Oh well…
I love the theme and story behind your fabric. It makes them come alive and seem like friends. Hope your enjoying all the holiday festivities. 🙂
My ten year old son who is a Star Wars Fan and a very creative arty boy watched Star Wars Robot Chicken and was fascinated when watching the Special Features of the DVD on the making of same, to find out that all the clothes were hand made for the figures. Just this weekend he has been going through my stash and has been patiently cutting out tiny little pants, T-shirts and long hooded jackets and sewing them with a running stitch I taught him. After three days of persistence I can see his enthusiasm and have told him I will teach him to use the sewing machine. He was so excited and thanked me for sharing all my things with him. So cute, I did say to him though that he must show me the fabrics before he cuts into any of it, as Mummy gets it all the way from America and I can’t replace most of it. He promised he would and then quietly asked me if we could get some boy fabrics with not so many flowers!!!! LOL I am just in love with your new line, beautiful!!
Tomorrow is my 29th birthday. I’m in the process of *hopefully* buying my first house! What a great birthday present it would be! 🙂
Love the new fabric!
Heather, I love the new collection! I want yards and yards of it! OK, for a story… A few days ago, I heard my 4 year old singing Christmas carols as she played with her doll house. Eventually I figured out that her dolls were practicing for their Christmas program. She got to a particular carol and just couldn’t get the words right. But apparently it was the “fault” of one of the dolls, because I heard her telling the doll that he is being naughty and is going to have to go sit down. Then she started a new carol and just went right along. I love to hear children in the midst of imaginative play.
Love the new line! It’s so gorgeous. I just found out my 10 year old god daughter started quilting recently. I’m shocked! She’s hand sewing little pieces of fabric together and apparently the quilt is getting pretty big. I can’t wait to see it. I’m so proud 🙂
Beautiful fabric. I love your color palette. Something strange… Let’s see. I am making some poor construction workers work in a blizzard to build me a house. I have some guilt about that – but at least they have work!?!?!
You know how something will trigger a thought, which in turn triggers another thought, and pretty soon your mind is bouncing all over the place? Well, I was reading through your blog and you mentioned your mom tried to teach you the Lindy. I have an uncle named Lindy and both my uncle and the dance were named for Charles Lindbergh. Thinking of my uncle and music made me think of my mom who has Alzheimer’s and is no longer cognizant of her surroundings, but recently we were listening to 40’s music and she started to tap her foot and clap her hands! That was like a present from her to me. Then my mind skipped in time to all the sewing projects she helped me with when I was growing up, which brought my thoughts back to your lovely Nicey Jane fabrics, which I’m sure mom would have loved because so many of them remind me of the fabrics mom kept in her sewing cupboard representing all the many decades she wielded a needle and thead. See how my mind rolls around? Thanks for the memories, Heather!
Happy holidays to you! And Merry Christmas to us! Thanks for the giveaway of your lovely fabric. I am a florist and gardener, and I like to surprise people with little unexpected bouquets from the garden. It brightens my day to make someone happy.
What a beautiful new collection! Just lovely. Thanks so much for offering the opportunity to win something beautiful from your shop!
My fun story: my two-and-a-half year old and I frequently work with art materials together and she loves to “help” me sew. A couple weeks ago, we worked alongside one another–she coloring with her crayons and me drawing in my sketchbook. Her words upon using a white crayon on white paper: “Mama. This crayon is broken.” 🙂
Happy holidays!
Love the new fabrics!
My 2 1/2 year old’s language is really exploding right now, which results in some pretty funny conversations. The other night we told her it was time to go to bed. “No,” she said. “It’s time to rock and roll!”
She always makes me laugh. Thanks for the giveaway!
About two days after my youngest son was born a friend called to inquire about how I was doing. She asked what I needed and I absentmindedly teased that I needed some bread from the local bakery as I was starving. It was not 10 minutes after I hung up the phone that she was on my doorstep with a bakery care package. I’m so lucky to have friends like that!!
Love your bike! and all the new fabrics! I have my girls participate in their school community activity of adopting a family and helping to buy for someone who needs a helping hand. Thinking of others before yourself.
I’m in LOVE with ‘Nicey Jane’… cant wait to sew something up! Maybe I should name the baby in my belly, Jane… if its a girl : )!
Well my story is about my wedding…weird, maybe fun…kinda interesting. im a little lesss ‘froo froo’ than my sister…she was in my wedding…early that morning i had my hair blown out by my stylist and i was ready for the wedding…at my sisters house she was going bridzilla on me getting ready…hair makeup etc…well, turns out…driving to the church with my other sisters…I was the one in the back storage area of the van on the way to my own wedding while my bridzilla attendents sat comfortable in van seats. i still look back and laugh at that memory!
Hi there Heather,
I love all of your collections this new one included for sure! Somthing interesting… I met your mother in law at a little quilting and fabric show a couple of weeks ago while stocking up on some more pop garden 😉 I LOVE all of her awesome creations as well. your family must just ooze creativity
Whilst on vacation at Moosehead Lake Maine a Moose hit our car (I did my best to avoid him). I swerved well enough to save the engine and gas tank – he hit the passenger door, got up and ran back to the Lake. My husband had me pull over at the next gas station and came back out with a yellow oval sticker that had a silhouette of a moose on it and the letters ME (for Maine) as well as a postcard with a moose on it. He called me the Moose Master. My kids called me the Moose Masher.
First of all, I love that dress that I keep seeing in the pictures. Is there a pattern for that?
Usually for Christmas I like my tree to look nice as well as the rest of the Christmas decor. This year we had a fiasco putting up our “pre lit” tree. Well, none of the lights worked. So, instead of going out and getting a new one my husband was kind enough to spend 2 hours taking all the lights off so we could put new ones on. By the time he finished my 4 year old daughter was so ready to decorate. She couldn’t stand it any longer, so we let her loose and she decorated the whole tree by herself. Of course most of the ornaments ended up in the same area near the bottom of the tree. A few days later when I realized that we were just going to keep them that way I decided to get into the fun of being a child on Christmas. I popped a bunch of popcorn and gave my daughter a needle and yarn and together we strung popcorn for our tree this year. It was really fun, and I am glad that kids are so excited about the simple things like popcorn on a tree.
I love your fabrics, all of them. I use them all the time, and would love more. I am so excited about his new line. And a raincoat would be perfect.
Merry Christmas
LOVE the fabric, Congrats on the new line!!!! I cannot wait to get my hands on some 😉 I love to sew…and definately look up to you… would have to say you are one of my role models (No I am not kissing up, just telling the truth)…I just look at you and wonder “How does she do it all…does she sleep?”
For Christmas Last year, my husband got me and awesome sewing machine…even gave up part of his Christmas to make it happen…thanks love!
Your fabrics are so beautiful!
We just got dumped on with about 10″ of snow, so as soon as I dig out my driveway, I’m headed to the quilt shop!
The best gift I ever recieved was for my Anniversary this past August. My husband had taken the day off with out informing me. BUT he got up and got ready for work. I am always asleep when he leaves, so when he said goodbye, I rolled over and thought nothing of it. He came back shorty and woke me up with flowers, donuts, and the fact that he took the day off to spend together. It was a PERFECT day 🙂
The fabrics are AWESOME! 🙂
I’m in LOVE with ‘Nicey Jane’!!! Can’t wait to get my hands on it! Maybe I should name the baby in my belly, Jane… if it’s a girl! : )
My husband and I have been married for four years, and although he has made single course meals (pasta roni, pizza, potatoes, crepes), I have always wanted him to surprise me with some romantic dinner one day. Last night was the day! I came home from work, and there were candles out and he’d made twice-baked potatoes, brown sugar carrots, and beef steaks. And roses. And romantic music. It was all terribly out-of-character for him but it brought tears to my eyes.
Well, I’m going to claim pregnancy brain and say that I just can’t think of something clever to write. I’m due with my fourth in April and will have four under four at that point. And no, I’m not going crazy yet. Maybe that’s interesting enough?
it’s not what I have done but what a bike store here does. They take old and new bikes and give them away at Christmas to needy children. If the bike is old, they have parts to fix them and send them on their way. They walk the walk…they are good people and inspire me so.
Merry Christmas, Andra
My husband bought me a trip to Paris for Christmas! How’s that for nice!!!
Can’t wait, we leave in March…
My seven year old kept talking about this friend in her class. I hadn’t ever heard her talk about this girl so I wondered who she was. When I went to P/T conferences her teacher told me how kind my daughter was to befriend this girl in the class with special needs. Turns out it was her new friend. As a mother I couldn’t be happier to hear that my children are kind to others.
OH my I love this new line. I bought all of your freshcut line and am still coming up with fun projects. Something nice. For my birthday last year my hubs treated me to a Brand new Bernina Aurora 440. I am in love!!!
Something sweet: On my 40th birthday, my hubby arranged for my good out of town friend to visit, and we went to a swanky afternoon tea. While we were out, he shopped, cleaned and filled the house with people for a surprise party, while caring for two three years olds (one of whom was visiting). It was a great surprise. –Love your fabric names. My mom is a “Lindy-hopper,” too.
I homeschool my two boys and I am not below using potty-talk to get their attention. I feel better getting that out. But isn’t that always the case? 😉
I want your pink retro bike!!! My nephew is 4 and my sister has this tradition called the “Elf on the Shelf” who watches you everyday and travels back to the north pole at night to tell Santa if you’ve been naughty or nice. Well, the elf on the shelf “moves around” throughtout the day and my nephew, Mason, saw that he was IN the christmas tree. His face light up like I’ve never seen it before and he just murmured “auntie kari, its just magic…you can’t explain it!”. Happy holidays!
Hi Heather! I am getting married next summer, and for our wedding I’m trying to invoke a vintage-y picnic feel, and one way I’m planning to do this is by using gorgeous fabrics to sew into festive flags to hang around the dance floor, and to make a few coordinating quilts as picnic blankets. I’ve been searching for the perfect fabrics, and I was blown away when I came across your Nicey Jane line! The pictures you have of the fabrics are exactly what I’m trying to get for my wedding, so I’m now perusing the site and trying to make up my mind about the various combinations of fabrics to get for all my wedding projects. I thought you’d like to know I’m planning to feature your gorgeous fabric on my big day!
I woke up to my sidewalks and driveway shoveled by my sweet nieghbor that knows my husband is out of town and I am pregnant. What kind friends I have.
I bought some of your felt to make these evergreen trees that I saw in a catalog for outragous prices, I recieved the felt, by the way thanks for the Gift tags and 10% off and now can’t find the Catalog to reference…o My!
Oh I just love the fabric. My husband just did something nice for me. He threw me a surprise birthday party for my golden birthday. He baked me a cake and made food- so sweet!
My mom really gets into April Fool’s Day, and one year she poured out all of the cereal in the boxes and replaced it with cat food. What a surprise that morning when I went to get breakfast! I hope that I can be as zany with my kids someday 🙂
When I was in the singles ward (singles group of church), we had a “secret friend” month, where everyone was given a friend to do something nice for during a whole month. You could choose how to do this: You could do lots of small things, one or a few big things, whatever you wanted. The point was to make that other person feel special. My secret friend went above and beyond. Not only did they have flowers delivered to my office (and they were beautiful and had all the gals in the office talking), but among other things, he left a little note and a nice gift card to one of my favorite restaurants. Thankfully, at the end of the month, we had a party where we met our secret friend. Here’s the funny part: I didn’t really know … HIM, but I was ever so grateful that this stranger took the time to find out something about me from my other friends, to truly make me feel special. Did he and I become best of friends? No, but that wasn’t necessarily the point. He moved off to school shortly after that, but interesting note: His mom ended up making my fab wedding dress! ^_^
I think the greatest charity I have received lately was while I was taking care of one of my patients. She was my age (28) and had come to the ICU with the swine flu leaving at home a husband and 9 month old daughter. As her condition worsened I became more and more filled with compassion for this family. Through this time of struggle they were so patient and hopeful; finding the joy in small things. Their beautiful example inspired me to find joy in so much more; especially my family who, thankfully, were healthy and happy. The little struggles of daily life didn’t seem to be all that great anymore. What a great gift of a lesson to learn this Christmas season!
(as a side note: I find your fabric to be bright and cheery that I have decided to put together a basket for this girl’s baby daughter ; including a pair of baby booties that I have created from your fabric. Thank you for the inspiration!)
Gorgeous, gorgeous fabric!
I LOVE Nicey Jane, as I love all of your fabrics. Let’s see, one of the sweetest things I’ve ever been given was a couple years ago on Christmas. My husband knew I really wanted Photoshop Elements so he got that for me. I was thrilled! Then, after everyone was done opening gifts he pulled another one out for me and it was….a Canon Rebel xti! He knew how much I wanted that camera, but I thought there was just no way we could afford it. He worked it out as a special surprise for me. What a sweetie!
For my birthday this year, a sweet lady, whom I hardly even know, called me up & asked to take me out for a nice lunch for my birthday last month. The first time I met her was on a train ride (a suprise birthday gift from my hubby last year) 3 hours away from here. It turns out we live 15 minutes apart. And a year later, she remembered that my birthday was in November. So we had lunch & it totally made my special day that much better 🙂
On a recent visit to our local coffee shop, the interior was packed, and we ended up sitting outside at an umbrella table with some coffee-shop friends (folks we met a while back at this coffee shop and mostly see there). They have 3-year old twins, a boy and a girl. It was the most exciting cup of tea I’ve ever had, as the boy took us on a trip via flying table (because of the umbrella, of course) to the castle of an evil witch. We were scared to see the witch but he said not to be — she wasn’t home right now. 🙂 I need to hang out with 3-year olds more often. Such imaginations!
After my daughter and I dipped pretzels and Swedish fish in chocolate my husband saw my recently acquired stash of juicy, delicious blackberries and dipped a bunch of them as well. I think they’re even better than chocolate dipped strawberries! I’ll definitely be repeating that tasty combo.
I’m positively squee-ing about your new line.
I’m SO excited, as a nice BIG box of Nicey Jane landed on my porch yesterday…I don’t sew (yet) but I use fabrics in all my work! curious??? why I could never tell…that would spoil the special surprises! Thank you (once again!) for a truly delightful collection!
Many Blessings!
Jill
Most recently my wonderful Hubby vacuumed for me…and he made supper last night while I took a shower after putting the baby to bed….how restful it is to not have to worry about supper or the baby while showering. 🙂
Also, I was wondering if you know the pattern of the dress in the pictures…the one with the buttons down the front? It is quite lovely!
Heather! You have outdone yourself with this collection! Really lovely designs!
Happy Times from SNOWY Colorado!
Jeanelle
I love it all.
Funny story: Mu five year old looked out the window yesturday and noticed the trees. One had lost all its leaves and in front of a row of juniper trees. She said, “Wow Mom look at that bald-headed tree! Oh wow and look at those ones that are still green! Its called NEVER GREEN!”
Made me laugh!
what a lovely collection!
I made soup yesterday for my 4 year old and two year old girls. Of course, the two year old dumped her entire bowl on the table. As I was counting to 10, my four year old said in her most earnest voice, “Mama, she’s only two years old. What did you expect?” Love it when the 4 year old is that voice of reason!
Beautiful fabric! Nice thing to share…when I was young (26), I had just bought my first house…it was an old house, with a nice front porch. I wanted a porch swing to go on my porch, but I was ‘house-poor’ and no extra $ for a swing…I bought the house in October, and on my birthday in May, I came home to a porch swing my Dad had installed while I was at work that day! I was so surprised by his kindness and forward thinking! Great memory!
This retro style is such fun. Feels like home full of children and laughter.
I am actually sick in bed right now but the video made my hour, so thanks.
Love the fabrics! I feel connected to them in a way because for my entire life my grandmother has given me the nickname Jane (not sure why – it’s not my name.) And I love swing dance! In fact I met my husband out doing the Lindy Hop. 🙂
Oooh, I think Swing Toss and Welcome Road are my favorites…
When i was first married, my husband knew I wanted to start doing artsy stuff and gave me a Sculpy kit to play around with…so sweet!
I’m so excited about your new fabric! One thing I think of was that a couple years ago my friends threw me a surprise birthday party. I was really touched that they want to so much work, all the planning and coordinating, keeping the secret, agonizing whether I had figured it out. I had no clue!
Beautiful fabrics! I’m so excited to sew with them! I have three little girls and this time of year is so magical for them! We love to do the countdown with little treats and I usually do some small stockings that I had sewn a couple years ago that are numbered and placed on a little tree. Well, we lost some of those stockings and I just didn’t have time or the means to re-make them and had been wondering how we could countdown otherwise. Last week, we came home to discover a little gift on our front doorstep. My sister-in-law had put together the cutest little package of numbered canisters full of treats and magnetized to afix to our fridge. Such a thoughtful little handmade gift… and she didn’t even know that we needed one! I’m always so touched by handmade gifts like that!
I would love, love, love to play with Nicey Jane! I’m a substitute teacher for a small Texas school district. I just love the hugs I get from the little ones when I see them out and about town! Even the little stinkers make my day with a hug. 🙂
My nice story doesn’t really involve me, but yesterday I was at the store buying bunches of baking supplies and when I went to check out there was a fair line. Two people ahead of me was an older couple with both of them in those motorized chairs. A couple with a strong looking young man had just finished checking out and when he looked back and saw the chaired couple trying to put all their items on the check-out counter he stopped leaving and helped them get everything stacked up.
The woman was just so thankful, it was lovely to see her gratitude.
Something really nice happened to me recently- I went out on a blind date with a really great guy! It’s been 2 yrs. since my divorce, 13 yrs. since I went on a date… scary but surprisingly great!
I have a nice friend who buys me fresh pineapples for no reason, just because she knows I love them. I {heart} Nicey Jane!
I really don’t feel clever lately – hubs & I just bought our first home, and just the cleaning of 30 years of crap out of that house is exhausting! (on top of our “real” jobs) – but it was in the low 40s overnight in LA, which is a rarity…I should prolly think about turning on the heat in the new place!
My little cousin was born this morning…he’s beautiful! Can’t wait to see him in person!
I am loving this new line and plan on doing a quilt block swap with friends, using your new line! Simply darling!
It snowed here where I live today & it snowed LOTS! My little boy who is about a year and a half hasn’t played in snow yet. I plan on throwing some snow pants on him and letting him play in the snow! I’ve always dreamed of playing in the snow with my kids & today is the day!!
Someone was kind to me at the bank this morning… She found a lost deposit. I so appreciated it and feel now I can put the panic button back in the closet…
Last night at work I was really stressed out. My coworker brought me a string cheese and I almost cried. I know it might seem strange but that somehow made everything more manageable.
thank-you for sharing your talents with us in the form of more delicious fabric! my sewing basket runneth over!
WOW, the fabric is goreous!! I LOVE it! the color palates are right up my ally.
For me, this time of year is all about the food! We have an unusual family appitizer we like to serve on Christmas Eve. Have you ever heard of bacon-wrapped-water-chestnuts? They sound really weird but they are soooo good. Just wrap a small peice of bacon around a whole water chestnut and secure with a toothpick; broil them in the oven til the bacon is crisp and then dip them in a sauce made from a cup of ketchup, 2 to 3 tbs of brown sugar and 1 to 2 tsp of yellow mustard. If you’re feeling adventurous you MUST try these! They are the perfect combination of crispy, crunchy, bacony goodness!
When I was away at college having a most difficult time with a full credit load and stresses of church callings, I had also most recently had lost a friend in a car accident and my heart was heavy. As I trudged across a snowy campus that seemed so dark and dreary, I came to my doorstep and found a plate of brownies and an anonymous note saying how great this person thought I was. For me it was like a parting in the clouds and gave me such hope from such a small act of kindness. And while it was so many years ago, I still remember that most important plate of brownies.
I’m excited for the laminates. I really want to make a feminine looking laptop bag that is just the right size.
Now my story…several years ago somebody anonymously gave us their piggy bank for Christmas. It contained $60 in change. We have no idea where it came from. While it was a bit odd, it was kind of fun as well.
My husband did something very nice and unexpected for me. He goes to Las Vegas a couple of times a year. Last year, he had a good trip as far as it goes and he bought me earrings at Tiffany’s. That was very nice in itself, but you have to know that he NEVER steps foot in a jewelry store because he hates it and to think that he did just for me means a lot!
Today is the day I start sewing Christmas gifts for my nieces. This is very interesting, fun,and I hope, clever for me! I need to do some massive pattern alterations on a smock pattern for my youngest niece. I am praying all will go well!
So bright and lovely!
I’m having a long, stressful morning with my 2 year old, so I’m currently letting her run rampant, including climbing on things she usually can’t (they’re right next to the computer so I can keep a hand nearby) so I can get a teensy online break. 🙂
Today a couple strangers were nice to me… just the simple act of opening the door when my hands were full. Full of mittens because the frost has hit and full of my lunch bag because I was on my way to work and full of warm coffee because, well, I did say the frost has hit. And I am full of gratitude, because some times it’s just the little things that help the day start right.
P.S. I think I’m in love with the second dress pictured here. Is it a pattern you can share with us? Can’t wait to get my hands on some of your new yummy, yummy fabric!
Something kind my husband does is let me sleep in on the weekends. I stay home and take care of our 1 year old son while he is at work, and he takes care of him on weekend mornings so I can catch up on the sleep I miss during the week.
This year we are trying to focus our family not on the things we want or get but on the kindnesses we can spread–you know, scattering sunshine! So far the one I’m most excited about is something my 12 year old son is involved with. As part of his youth group they collected and packaged shoe boxes full of items to take to the veteran’s hospital. This Saturday they’ll be delivering them. I can’t wait!!
I love your new line. I’m sitting here dreaming up all the ways I could us a little 🙂
Merry Christmas!!
So much kindness and interesting things are being written! People are great.
My young friend Kofi was kind enough to invite me to his school’s thanksgiving party, and attending it definitely made me more thankful for him and his family!
I love the collection, the photos and the pin-up! Love them.
All my stories these days are about my baby girl, so here’s one. She’s eleven months, and, of course, throws things on the floor. We say “no, no, no”, wagging our finger very exaggerated-like, then pick them up again. She laughs and laughs, and throws again. Last week, she started saying “no, no, no” with her finger before we did, and laughing even harder. Then yesterday, at the park, there was a lady feeding the pigeons, throwing corn on the floor. O. called and called to get her attention, then wagged her “no, no, no” at her.
Nicey Jane is just beautiful, can’t wait to work with it! I just got engaged about 3 weeks ago and my fiance is in the Army. We have known each other since high school and were best friends for years before dating. I am sewing him a quilt for Christmas this year. In it I’m including fabric from him uniforms that he wore while fighting in the war in Iraq. I am using a variety of uniforms which he wore during three seperate deployments. I can’t wait to see the look on his face when he opens it, I really dont think he’ll be expecting this!!!
I can’t wait to see (feel) the new laminated fabric! I can think of a few places where that would come in handy. My mom taught my sister and I to sew at a very young age. We are all now quilters, and I even teach a quilting class through the park and rec. Something wonderful that my mom has done for the past several years is that for our birthdays (which are only about a month apart), she sets up a sewing day at her house for my sister and me. She chooses a pattern and makes up kits with all the fabric needed. She tries to choose a fairly simple pattern so we can get most, if not all, of it completed in a day. Each kit has different fabric. All we need to do is show up with our sewing machines and go to it. The three of us laugh, eat and sew all day. It is something I look forward to every year!
I love the clothesline in the video – I would love to know if you made it or bought it? It looks like umbrella stands.
I love this new line! What fun it is :). Something kind that my Dad did for my sister and I one year for Valentine’s Day is that he went out early in the morning (I think) and bought us each a primrose plant. Now, this is my dad who doesn’t usually think about gifts much on holidays, birthdays, etc. (on his own anyway – we usually help with that :), let alone Valentine’s day for his daughters, so that was very sweet :). The plants brought a bit of color to our home in the midst of the more drab looking days of winter.
The fabric is absolutely gorgeous – can’t wait to get my hands on some of the laminates! I made up some aprons with Nicey Jane already – and the craft fair I am taking them too is smack dab in the middle of the biggest surf contest ever – so my day will be spent waiting in traffic for hours to go about 15 miles – that’s weird right?
Ha! I’m eating pine nuts right now. If they taste like wasps then wasps must taste good!
We love going on a trek up to the mountains in the late fall to collect pine nuts. The whole family (extended) gets in on the act. First we have to find just the right stand of pinion pines where the trees are fairly close together. We spread tarps out on the ground. Then the men each get a tree and start shaking it to make the pine cones fall onto the tarps. The kids love shaking the pine cones to get out all the pine nuts. It’s usually a big sticky mess because of the sap but they sure smell good when roasting in our oven!
The months before my wedding, I was living at home with my mom, working full time, planning my wedding, sewing bridesmaids dresses, making and freezing food for the reception, spending time with my husband-to-be, and generally way too busy. During this time things in my room got gradually worse and worse, and by the time I got married and left on my honeymoon, it was a huge disorganized mess. Knowing I needed to come back and take care of it _after_ the honeymoon was depressing and stressful. Imagine my relief and my gratitude when I returned to organize my stuff and clean out the room and found that my sweet big sister had already gone and done it for me.
The new collection is super fun! I can’t wait for the laminated fabrics, I have a list of things to make.
As for a story – well my sister recently moved out of state, but when we were living in the same town, she used to drop by my house with Starbucks. It was always nice to have coffee and chat. I really appreciated her thoughtfulness and look forward to seeing her at Christmas.
OH man this is so fun! Last Sunday we had sick kids at our house and so we skipped out on church. At 10a.m (don’t laugh) I needed a nap because I had been up all nite with my sick baby Mr. Goo . I was just laying down and my 9 year old came into my room and said to me , “Mom I want to do something churchy since we missed church.” I told her that it was a fabulous idea. When I woke up she had a piece of paper on her door that read – MOM -patient, nice, good, kind, smart, beautiful and she had circled patient. I cried when I read it and realized that love is blind and that I love being a MOM. She circled patient because she decided that she wanted to work on being more patient. I love being a MOm -thanks for letting me share and for the awesome giveaway! Big Smiles, JEN
The best gift story I have… well this year I officially moved into a new check box, as far as age goes, and was reflecting on all the things I have yet to accomplish. One of which is getting a stamp in my passport. My mom and I had a number of tear-filled conversations about unrealized dreams, in which she reminded me what we think we want isn’t always what is best for us. She surprised me on my birthday with a painting (she is a very talented painter, but rarely has the time). The card read, “Hoping this makes your dream a little more of a reality.” The painting was of a bustling canal in Venice, which was immediately hung on the wall facing my bed. I love her.
Today was the first day my little one and I played out in the snow together!!! As I dressed her for the event, I had flashes of the scenes from ‘The Christmas Story’ when the little boy hobbles along cause he’s so bundled up. So fun!
Awesome little video, Heather! Who did the ♫ music?
We are in a deep freeze here in Washington (state). Five below last night…so viewing Nicey in all her glory was a great warmer upper! However, it is time to give, and I’ll have to wait to receive some of your new line. I see spring projects in my future!
I normally put my craftiness to work at Christmas time, but this year I am making ALL of our gifts… We are participating in something called Advent Conspiracy (adventconspiracy.org) It is where instead of buying gifts for everyone, you make them or give gifts of service or quality time… with the $ that we would have spent on presents we are donating to help with the world water problem… our church is helping to build 2 wells in Tanzania that will give clean drinking water to thousands of people!
Fun fact… Americans spend about 450 billion dollars a year on Christmas and it would only cost about 10 billion to give everyone in the world clean drinking water!
Oh, La, La, I am in love with Nicey Jane! Here at home I am surrounded but boys but your collection makes me itch to create fun, flirty, feminine things!
To be or not to be…that is the question? What do you do for your kids when you cannot afford to buy nice gifts from the store? You get creative and make them something that means more to them then the newest hot buy!
That would be my Mammala’s answer anyways! She was always sewing and crafting us gifts, and was a gourmet cook on top of it all! She tried to teach all 6 of us her fabulous talents. Oh, how I wish now, that I had the desire to do so! 3 out of the 6 and that includes one brother, did pick it up and I find myself very jealous. Now, that’s normal for siblings, right?
Ok– here is something nice! I was buying some of your beautiful fabric, and somewhere between the Heather Bailey office and my Idaho home, the fabric was lost! So sad– but I called your office, and your sweet assistant quickly mailed a replacement, along with a darling apron pattern for my troubles! So Nice! I recieved the lovely fabric, and surprised my two daughters with beautiful aprons on Thanksgiving morning. They loved them!
Had a cookie exchange with my girlfriends last night – we are all scattered – but nothing better than cookies and girlfriends!
Shoot. my computer is acting funny. didn’t mean to post a second time. Sorry 🙂
Love the new fabric line…can’t wait to see the stationary.
The kindest thing someone has done for me lately is my mom has been helping us out since my daughter was born in late October. Just having her close by and an extra set of hands has been so wonderful.
I am putting together a sewing kit for my 8yo dds bday and it will contain some of your beautiful felt!
Nicey Jane is simply wonderful! My story-the summer before my first yr in high school I broke my leg. You see, my mom wanted me to stop by the post office to get her some stamps. I had just rollerskated back from the beach (it was the 80’s afterall!) and rolled on into the P.O. Before I knew it, my skates rolled out from under me on that slick floor and, CRACK, my leg broke. Luckily there was an off duty nurse in the bldg. The next day a sign went up prohibiting skates in the P.O.!
i ADORE the porch swing collection…it has my name written all over it!
hmmm….
something kind? my sweet mother bought + delivered me some long underwear last night. i have to walk to work due to parking space constraints on our construction jobsite – the 12 degree weather these last few days have been making the walk to and from unbearable…today, with my nice new long underwear, i stayed fairly warm during my walk in! mom’s rock.
thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
We had a first BIG snowfall of the season yesterday. We got 12″ of beautiful powdery snow. My husband was out of town, so at naptime my plan was to go out front and shovel the walkway. I got {very} bundled and went outside to discover someone had already done it for me! There are still good people out there!
The most recent nice thing that was done for me was yesterday. We got pounded with snow yesterday here in Flagstaff, and I was shoveling when my sons noticed what I was doing they quickly ran outside and told me to go in the house and rest and they would do it. Sometimes they just shock me:)
My 10 month old has learned to give kisses– and they are big, huge, wet, open-mouthed, suck-on-your-cheek-kisses but they melt my heart every time. Got to eat it up before he grows up and becomes “too cool” to kiss his mother. 🙂
After a long night last night with a little girl who’s sick to her stomach, we were grateful for the lovely snow on the ground this morning, our time rocking in the chair snuggling and rolling balls of yarn, and singing Christmas songs.
Wow, beautiful! I love the mod stripes!
Most recently, my car died, busted distributor cap and coil (as I was later told, I don’t know engines!) And my mechanic offered to tow my car 40 miles for FREE! What?! I love little surprises like that, especially when you’d never expect it!
My funny storie is about my daugther. She his my inspiration:) She actually thinks I work for Santa, because I told her I was making Cristhmas presents. You can read about it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mybabylittlefeet/4077323931/
I just bougth some of nicey jane prints, to make a summer dress for her. Can’t wait for them to arrive.
Thanks for the give away 🙂
I sent my daughter a “care” package for her “first” college exams with her favorite cookies and lots of little surprises…It’s wet and rainy in Georgia today…Happy Holidays (and I love the Nicey Jane and bought myself a fat qtr to cheer me up!)
I found out yesterday I was needed to host a luncheon for the spouses of the residents in my husband’s program today. My husband had a much needed day off (his first in over 21 straight 16-hour days), but instead of doing the things he wanted, he helped me get the entire house spic-and-span. It was a great reminder of what a fantastic man I married.
I’ve been not so patiently awaiting the arrival of Nicey Jane. I was in our new fantastic fabric store a couple of weeks ago, making them check on when their order was going to arrive. I need to touch it all.
I love christmas time, and I love gift giving. I can’t wait to use some nicey jane in some fun gift for someone!!
Love the new line! I cannot wait for some laminated cotton!
So, this morning my 2 yr old peed on our Anthro comforter, interesting, huh? Yeah.
Ha! I’m having fun reading all of the comments too. Great idea!
Well, when my Grandma-in-law passed no one in the family did crafts other than me. So my Mother-in-law packaged up her supplies and shipped them out. That means I got an entire box of heads in the mail. Doll heads. Needless to say, it was one of the more unique things I’ve ever received in the post.
Kindness, as we all know, begins with me!
I especially love this time of year. Most people love the ‘holiday spirit’ because it’s a time for giving. I love it because it’s a time to reflect upon the birth of our Savior AND use that thought process to do well for others. My parents tried to teach us this when we were younger. Not sure what year, but they sat us down and said they would no longer be spending large sums of money on gifts at Christmastime. Instead, they were limiting each child to $50 in gifts (there were 6 of us kids) and with the other money they used to budget for Christmas, we were going to make and deliver boxed Christmas meals to the homeless guys we see around town: Spiral cut ham, mashed potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, fresh rolls, corn, pies, and other goodies. We only managed to execute the meal drop for two or three years, but it’s obviously one of my favorite memories! We learned a little about what we have and how we can share that with others (and we didn’t really have much, from what I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older)!
I LOVE this new fabric…and your smarty girl book bag. I’ve never really sewn anything before (except in Home Ec class and on my cards!), but I think I’m ready to jump in. And this gorgeous fabric is definitely calling to me!!
Love the new line. I love your fresh yet retro feel you have become famous for.
I love the lindy hop too, however poor I am at it! LOL
I have just come back from a fabulous weekend away shopping with my girlfriends. It was a perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.
Happy HOlidays to you!
R
Here’s a nice one- My parents offered to store all our wedding presents for us, since my husband and I live in NYC (no storage!) and the wedding was in Phoenix. When we moved into our Manhattan newlywed flat in June, my parents drove all the way from Dallas (where they live) to NYC to bring our presents and help us settle in. They also loaded the car with Costco goods to fill our pantry. I’m still making bean soups from that Costco stash 6 months later! My mother also brought my grandmother’s sewing machine, so that I could teach myself to sew.
Would you please post which dress patterns your real-life Nicey model is wearing? I after I become friends with my sweet grandmother’s machine, I would like to make a Nicey Jane dress JUST like that! It looks like the perfect dress for a spring picnic in Central Park!
Warmly,
Lulu
Instead of buying presents for the many grownups in my family we donate time or money to each persons favorite charity. Sometimes people only pick one favorite and some years people will list many and you get to choose. That way it is still a surprise..kind of.
With my husbands side we take an amount we would have (wanted to spend) on the brothers and their wifes and go buy Toys for Tots with all the children. We then have dinner as a big family and watch the kids open their presents from their aunt and uncles.
Less stress, probably less money than usual and so much more rewarding!!
Thank you for the chance to win! This would check off the #1 item on my Christmas list!!! Though I won’t tell anyone I’d won so that it would remain the #1 item on my list! A wonderful thing that my mother did for me a couple years ago was to hand down my grandmothers sewing machine to me. I’ve been hooked ever since, mostly to sewing twirly skirts for my girls. I LOVE the new line. Looking forward to sewing it up!
Love all of your creations! Amazing!
As for something nice: I just want to give a shout out to the men out there that still open doors for the ladies! It is always a nice gesture that does not go unnoticed.
Something fun I think… My little boy is two years old, and wants to “help” mommy sew. I will be working and he will walk into my messy craft room and say, “Asher’s turn to sew.” Hopefully my daughter (9 months) will want to craft as well, that way I can spend more money on craft things to teach them. Husband not a fan:) I win!
I love your new fabric line, and can’t wait to see some new patterns as well! I am making a few of your patterns as christmas gifts this year, and am in love! The best gift I am getting this year is a trip home for Christmas. I haven’t been with my family on Christmas for 5 years, and come snow or sleet or hail, we are trekking to Utah. My husband is wonderful!
The other great gift I’ve lately received is my MIL came over and vacuumed my whole house! And got all the kids to pick up all their toys so she could do so. With 4 kids under 5, that is quite the task!
I am not a morning person, so getting up early in the morning to go teach my 5th graders is always a struggle. This morning when I got to the door of my classroom, I found a present! My sweet co-worker had left me a little giraffe stuffed animal for my new baby-to-be. I am really excited and nervous because this is my first, but everyone has been really sweet and kind to me. I’ve been looking at your new patterns, because I’ve been thinking about possibly making some decorations for the baby nursery. I can’t wait until I find out if it’s a boy or girl!
Something weird? Welcome to my world. This morning my work pants are frozen solid after doing chores. They can stand up by themselves. Apparently I can’t carry a bucket of water without spilling half of it along the way. I so need a distraction from farm work.
I’m so excited for this new fabric line – O.K. since it’s the holidays I will go with something unique we do to celebrate. On Christmas Eve, around midnight we head to the local 7-11, kids and all to take treats to those that need to work. Many think we are nuts, but it’s so much fun. Thanks again for the chance at winning some great fabric. I’m also excited for the laminate! Your amazing!
Today is my daughter’s 3rd birthday and she received lots of things with polkadots. She calls them pocoanuts and now I do too!
Thanks for the great giveaway and fun video.
Already put in an order for Nicey Jane. So cute! I sure would like more. Here is an amazing story. My daughter was born with a jaw too small to accommodate her tongue causing sleep apnea. The doctors kept telling me she needed surgery to make her jaw bigger. Finally after her last sleep study in September came back bad, I relented. However, she had come down with H1N1 and was hospitalized with bronchiolitis. Because of that, she had to wait 6 weeks for surgery. Last week we took her in for her surgery. We sent her back with the doctors and they discovered her jaw had grown so much during those 6 weeks, she no longer needed surgery. Hooray for swine flu! Merry Christmas to our family!
Great collection and photos. Good luck with the line.
Hmmm, something kind someone has done for me? Well the person who did this has no way of knowing the favor was ever received.
Years ago, a co-worker gave me a pair of brown, snakeskin baby booties for my newborn son. He wore them to the mall to take a photo with Santa that year and when I got home one of the shoes was missing. I was heartbroken. My husband suggested the shoe was gone forever. Bummer.
Two days later, I took a chance and called the Mall’s lost and found, described the missing shoe and guess what? A woman had turned the shoe in, telling the security personnel that she had spotted my son kick off the shoe but couldn’t catch up with me amidst the crush of holiday shoppers to give it back.
Mall officials said the good samaritan told them that she thought it was such an adorable, unique shoe that surely the owner might come back to the mall in search of it. She was right. Unfortunately mall officials would not give me her name so that I could call her and thank her.
Maybe the woman who turned the shoe in is an HB fan and is reading this right now.
If so, thanks a million.
Today both little brown, snakeskin shoes adorn my Xmas tree as they have every year for the last 8 years.
Once upon a time I used to sew for myself. These days I rarely get the chance as I have a little boy who grows so fast he is constantly needing new things. So much of my sewing time is dedicated to sewing boys clothes, nappies etc! I am hoping to make myself a new dress for Christmas! I am very excited about that (hopefully it will turn out!). I love the Nicey Jane fabric! Is there any end to the loveliness you create?
P.S. I am in love with those dresses. Please say there is a pattern.
Old friend, new hero.
I have a friend Jennifer, she is your creative kindred spirit, who is one of my new heroes for standing by her man.
Her husband is only 31 but suffered a heart attack a week ago Saturday (due to genetics not lifestyle). She called 911, did cpr, and did everything she could to save him. 24 hours later the drs told her he only had 2-5% chance of living. She followed her heart, transported him to another hospital, and got the word out via her blog. Thanks to many prayers and incredible medical treatments her Christmas surprise arrived early! He has made a wonderful/miraculous recovery and was sent home last Friday to be with his sweet pregnant wife, two boys and their dog named Calvin 🙂 They’ve got a long road ahead of them but at least these two lovebirds will be together!!! Long live true love!
If you would like the full story I’d be happy to email you her blogspot info.
The first bag that I made I sewed the straps on the wrong way and then the bag could hardly open. Fortunately, my daughter loved it and still carries it around.
Gorgeous collection.
Once (well, more than once, but this one time), I went to a show at the Black Cat in Washington, DC. Being from Northern VA, I fully understood the undesirable qualities of driving in and around Washington, DC. So, we decided to take the metro in. We failed to realize that the last train comes early on Saturdays and so, of course, we missed it. At 3 AM we had to hail a cab and ride it all the way to the station where my car was parked (which happened to be the last station on this particular line). The meter ran up to about $80, but the driver only made us pay $30.
The funny thing is, that’s not the only time a cab driver has bailed me out! I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers.
WOW!Beautiful!/sanna
When my parents came to visit me for Thanksgiving, my mother gave me my grandmother’s engagement and wedding rings. I think that’s the best gift I’ve ever received.
Well, as long as we’re on the subject of bugs – my son did a report on ants in his first grade class. We found out that ants have nurseries, sick rooms and napping rooms in their ant burrows. Napping rooms!! I mean, who knew ants were so civilized! No idea what they taste like – although I’m sure our cats know.
Love your new collection! Pretty, pretty dress above, with all the buttons!
Oh Heather, the fabrics are incredible! Well yesterday my external hard drive melted down, and I lost hundreds of movies that I had saved there, as well as a whole lot of work for my thesis. (I had backed that bit up, but still anxiety provoking!) Had a little grump about it, and then my Pal came home from work, told me he’d booked us a holiday in January, and suddenly the world seemed a little brighter and shinier. Thanks for such a lovely giveaway!
I am so excited to say that I am quitting my day job to stay home with my son and hopefully focus more on my little etsy store. 🙂 I love the new fabrics. You are so talented!
The one that sticks in my head as the kindest thing someone did for me was years ago I was in ninth grade and my father had called my mom long distance (collect!) at 3 a.m. to tell her he wanted a divorce. My mom, sister and I all cried together, but I refused to feel sorry for myself and went to school that day anyway, well it was Valentine’s Day! I cried all the long bus ride to school, the day was just awful and I was wishing I would have stayed home like my sister did, till after 2nd period I got paged to the office. There was a huge heart shaped box of chocolates with a note from a boy a year ahead of me. I was so shocked, the office ladies were all smiles, completely enjoying the moment. He didn’t know how my morning had gone, he’d been planning it for a while I guess, but it totally changed my day. A few months later we started dating, we were together almost 2 years. We can be friends now, we chat often on FB but it still sticks in my mind as one of the sweetest and most romantic things anyone has done for me. (I can almost stomach Valentine’s Day now, 21 years later, {ouch!})
Ok, something quirky…I have a 4lb. Yorkie named Pearl. She likes to rub her belly on the carpet by dragging her body along the floor. I call it her “Army Crawl.” Sometimes she’ll do it on command. It’s the best party trick ever! She also has enough hair on her head for a top knot, but she hates them so her “bangs” flop down on in her eyes. When she wakes up in the morning, sometimes her hair has been pushed to one side which looks like a Flock of Seagulls ‘do.
One of our favorite Christmas traditions it to make hot chocolate and watch “White Christmas”. It makes me all warm a fuzzy inside.
Love the new fabrics!
I am so excited about this collection! I have a little boy and I totally want to line some pants for him with the hop dot fabric!
Interesting fact: I am waiting impatiently for an email confirming that I will indeed get two tickets to the BCS National Championship game. ROLL TIDE!
A friend has made dinner for my family of four TWICE this week as we are in the throes of moving. What a gift!
Beautiful fabric!
A sweet thing my Mom did for me was buy me this DARLING red/white striped blouse yesterday while we were out shopping. It’s the cutest thing! 🙂
Your Nicey Jane is just too great, Heather! I’m absolutely loving it, and already have a piece picked out for my “dream” dress!
xo~ Achaia
I’ll be sewing up a storm this weekend with 30 of my closest family and friends! Doesn’t that sound fabulous? I can’t wait!

Lovely collection! I can imagine making a dress out of some of those fabrics! My little cousin who is 3 is such a goofy little guy and knows how to make you smile without even knowing it. The other day he was at our Grandmas house and came downstairs. He went up to Grandma and asked her “Grandma, aren’t I handsome?” It was the cutest thing!
I am so excited about Nicey Jane! I’m getting ready to get started on the Happy Stacker today – a little scared but I’ve read the pattern over and over so I think I’m all set 🙂 Something nice someone did for me – my husband brought me a breakfast burrito, yummm!
My 4-year-old daughter flashing a peace sign at her uncle & telling him, “Peace, Brother” (well, more like “Peace, Bova”). Don’t know if it’s funny or interesting but it sure is cute! I love, LOVE your new fabric!
Love the new line.
One of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me was when I burned my hand very badly. My little brother (9 at the time)took it upon himself to be my Official Icebag Guy and kept me supplied with new icy treatments every half hour – from real icebags to forzen peas to a half thawed lambchop…I was well cared for!
Well today I went to Homegoods to spend the last $59 on a gift card I have for there. The lady in front of me also spent a giftcard, saying that she has to spend them immediately and can’t wait. The cashier agreed with her. I said, I’ve had mine a year!! I just like having it in my purse so I can go get myself a treat if I feel like it but am broke lol!
I just love your style! All of your fabric is just gorgeous! I have always been a sucker for beautiful floral prints and you consistently hit the nail on the head. I’m enjoying learning to sew all over again after 13 years and look forward to making so many things with your collection. Thanks for making the world a more beautiful place! 🙂
Thanks for the great chance to win a gift certificate to your store! One the nicest things my husband does for me is offers to give me a back massage after he’s worked a long, hard day. It shows how giving and selfless he is:)
AWESOME!!! I absolutely ADORE the dresses!!! Where did the patterns come from??? Feel like sharing the love??? I’d love to make these for myself! Can’t wait to get my hands on your fabric!
We are going to have our 4th girl next year and I’m delighted that she’ll be born in May instead of being a winter baby like my other 3 girls were. I’m pretty excited about that little gift to come.
I love, love, love your new fabric!! It gives me a sense of calm when I look at it 🙂
The best thing that has ever happened to me, has happened three times (yes, I have three children), all three have said that Mom is their hero in one report or another! How awesome is that. It helps me to realize that even though I’m not a perfect parent, I am doing something right!
Love this line and especially love the story that goes with it.
My Mom was in the grocery store and didn’t have enough money but the young woman behind her offered to pay the balance which my Mom accepted. A week later I was at the grocery store and the elderly woman in front of me had the same problem so I paid her balance. It all comes around eventually.
One year for Mother’s Day, my sweet hubby gave me such a great present. He drew me a bath filled with wonderful bath salts, put on soft music, and then put a glass of wine on one side of the tub, and a pint of ice cream on the other. It was an hour of relaxing bliss. He’s a catch, that one. 🙂
LOVE your new fabric!! Oh to dance like they did when the Lindy was in style – what a dream. It was MINUS 4 when I left for work this morning but has now warmed way up to 14. How is THAT for an interesting fact about way up north in Idaho??
I love your fabric. It reminds me of a simpler time. To be able to wear a bit of nostalgia, love the thought. My sweet story is about my three year old. I had been crying because my dear uncle is terminally ill, and is quite sick at the moment. My sweet boy inquired why I was sad. When I told him, he said” don’t worry mommy I will make your heart feel better”, and he put his little hand on my heart, and gave me the best hug. My little angel did make me feel better. How special that I’ve been given a sweet boy!
I no longer have much time to sew and the other day i sat in front of the machine ready to do something and my 5 year old walk in the room and ask me to read her a book, she knows how much i love to sew but i gave it up for her and after i read the book she said: “thank you mom, i know you wanted to sew, you are the best mom i ever had” as if she had other moms. Anyways it was very nice from her.
Thanks for the great giveway.
How cute are children – My husband promised our 9 and 11 year olds a prize if they answered any question on ‘University Challenge’ on TV. Soon after our 4 year old got up beside my husband and asked if he could be on his team. 10 mins later, after my husband answered 2 questions, the 4 year old announced that he had won 2 prizes!
My news is exciting. My friend just had her second little baby girl last night – on my Birthday! I turned 30! I’m so excited for her. I am going to have to get some of this fabric to make fun things for her girls.
I just love the new fabrics, but that is not surprise – I love all your fabrics.
My youngest daughter once said something so funny, that it always pops into my head as a funny story. My son who was about 6 was playing up at dinner time. My youngest Daughter (3 years old at the time) leaned forward, and in a very stern tone said “Rory, you chop that off!”. Once I realised what she was trying to say, I laughed till I cried. She meant “Rory, You cut that out”!
Thank you for the lovely giveaway.
My husband is working as a civilian at Camp Liberty in Baghdad, Iraq. It has been an interesting year being a single mom to a 3 year old. To top that 10 days after he left I found out I was pregnant. Yep had a baby on my own, well docotors and nurses were their too.
Since he will be gone for Christmas he asked (TODAY) if I could make him a quilt and ship it to him for Christmas. Oh and the mailing deadline for packages to Iraq was Nov 30th. Of course I am going to try anyway.
I am new to all this fabric. I love that there is a story and the names go with with. I need some bright red and lime green fabric for some curtains…. help a sister out!!!
Oh my goodness! I’m completely in love! I’ve been anxiously awaiting this big reveal and have to say it did not dissappoint! Beautiful, beautiful work Heather.
A little something silly for your reading pleasure, be it known that I work with names and have lately had a thing for this one:
Priscilla Purvis-Pitts
spends all her time making baseball mitts,
out of florals and stripes and dots
all the while hoping that one day she’ll win that big lot.
She dreams of moving onto saddles one day,
as she has a thing for riding horses in May.
She’s asked Santa this year for a yard,
of sweet Nicey Jane,
and even it if comes as a card,
she’s determined to make her yard stretch a saddle and stroke her horse’s silky black mane.
Silly silly, and I never said I was a poet, but sometimes is just about some weird fetish with a fabulous name. Thank you Heather! Merry, Merry Christmas!
Sunni
My twin sister who lives in Utah is coming to Florida to visit me tomorrow despite her crazy busy work schedule and the chaos of 4 small kids she’s still coming!! With all of that going on she has committed to sewing through the night with me after her arrival. She is total gem and she’s gonna help me pull off Christmas for the wee ones! LOVE HER!
Heather Bailey, you’ve done it again! Freshcut is my all-time favorite fabric line, but Nicey Jane may be a close contender, not to mention it looks like the two will blend together beautifully.
And you want to know something funny? My husband and I are considering trying to get pregnant in the near future- I’m already hoping for a girl just so I can make a nursery full of your gorgeous fabrics. Could you imagine? Oh, it would be wonderful!
no real funny stories, other than the one where i ran into a sign pole on the sidewalk on our first 6am family bike ride. it really hurt, but surprisingly i was thrown off and landed on my feet while a 60+ year old husband and wife watched from across the street. it was awesome.
The fabric and the dress are fabulous. Something fun for me is that I’m going to a Lady GaGa concert tomorrow.
Something nice – I’ve been a major funk the past few days, and my pal Amy knew she just had to help. So today, while running errands, I get a call from her – “Can you go to Panera for lunch?” Well, I’d just inhaled a kid’s meal in a parking lot, but I hadn’t had lunch dessert(my son’s latest obsession), and I rarely turn one down. So, 90 minutes and a piece of coffee cake – and a sample scone – and a good bit of venting later, funk gone. Yay for friends who are willing to step into the funk and pull you out!
I LOVE the new collection! I am so excited for Christmas this year for some reason…can’t wait for people to open the presents I got! 🙂
LOVE your fabric! My son had his first wrestling match today and won! Not the easiest sport to watch your son compete in…until they win. 🙂 Keep up the great work.
ooh! I love these fabrics!!! I wish I could have a room in my house just full of Fabric just for to look at and do what ever I want with — mmm – sounds amazing!
Hi Heather,
Are the dress designs yours? Or is there a pattern number you can share?
Thanks! Love the collection.
While in the doctor’s office today I picked up a copy of Scientific American to peruse whilst I waited. In it was a report on Tyrannosaurus Rex and how they have found two related predecessors. One that was the size of a human and the other had facial horns. Amazing what one learns! I figure I have to start brushing up on my dino knowledge since my youngest has claimed she wants to be a Paleontologist when she grows up. 🙂
I absolutely LOVE your fabric! I just received my order of fabric today and it is even better in person. Of course, I would have no problem with a gift cert. for some more.
Something silly: The way our Christmas tree evolves over the years. When we first were married, the tree was gorgeous and every ornament was perfectly placed. Now 10 years of marriage and 3 kids later…..well lets just say it is quite a sight. My 19 month old is chucking ornaments all over the house and half of the lights aren’t even working. But all that matters is that the kids did it and they love it:o)
My friend Kristin keeps lending me her knitting book of childrens hats so I can look for one more pattern or one more direction.
A classmate offered to give me a ride halfway across the state to visit a family member who was going through a rough time. (I don’t have a car.) I couldn’t believe her willingness to do that. Everything is fine now. I am so thankful there are kind people like her in the world.
I live in North Pole, Alaska where the winters start early, end late, are very cold and very dark. I just had my 6th child and my friend offered to pick up my three oldest children and take them to school each day! This has been a wonderful blessing.
This line is lovely. I already have it on my Etsy “wishlist” – why doesn’t Etsy have a real wishlist? The nicest thing that someone’s done for me lately was that my brother sent me a bouquet of balloons after I had surgery. I was touched by his thoughtfulness and it’s a big change from our younger years.
One of my students, as sweet, shy girl, randomly gave me a candy cane the other day. I was touched (I teach high school, so this isn’t a very frequent occurance). Love the fabric!
Every day, rain or shine…. (and there was alot of rain living in the Great Bear Rainforest of Canada) from when I was in Kindergarten until I was 12, my mother used to walk a hot lunch to me at my school so I wouldn’t have to eat sandwiches… I used to beg to have sandwiches like the other kids.. but thinking back now, I think it was incredibly kind of my mother to have done that for me…
I was the recipient of a random act of kindness. Many years ago when the phrase was popular, I was in rush hour traffic approaching a major toll bridge. One lane was closed and I let a car into my lane. In my mind, it was reluctantly, but I believe in rewarding positive behavior – he could have just dove right in as so many do… So when it came to be my turn to pay (before electronic gadgets, etc), the toll-taker wouldn’t take my money. It took awhile for it to register with me, but the toll-taker was telling me the fellow I’d let in ahead of me had paid my toll. It still makes me smile!
beautiful fabrics.
something interesting and great…an unknown woman at the big box store gave me a coupon for the diapers i was buying.
…tis the season… 🙂
Love the new fabrics!
Yesterday my husband did something incredibly kind for me — he cleaned the whole house. He spent all day doing it. While I sat on the couch trying to get over my cold which seems to be lasting forever because I’m pregnant… Anyway, our house is beautifully clean and it’s all thanks to him. He even cleaned behind and under the refridgerator and stove!
Oohh I need that laminate fabric for the same thing! We have a store that sells cruiser bikes and I have been wanting to make some saddle bags to sell. Anyway my daughter LOVES the holidays and is actually still stuck on Halloween. We watched Rudolph the other day and she has been going around singing “bluedolph the red nose reindeer” ever since. Gotta love all of the things kids say.
All I’ve got is something kind and sweet: My husband bought me a dress form, but not just any dress form. A pink polka dot dress form that is precisely my size! Your Nicey Jane fabrics would look oh-so-lovely on my form as I use my to fit a dress. 🙂
Oooo! What wonderful fabric! My little story is: A neighbor boy was raising money for school through selling christams items and such and there was a mix up on payment. So he and his mom came to an agreement and took care of it. I tried to repay them but they refused because she was glad I had helped to support the school. So I decided that since they wouldn’t accept payment I’d do something special! I made a cute little reversible drawstring bag and filled it with little goodies! Haven’t been able to run it over yet, but can’t wait to see how much she likes it!
My favorite Holiday desert-Peppermint ice cream with Hershey’s chocolate syrup. MMMMM! When I saw the peppermint ice cream in the grocery store this weekend, I knew it was Christmas time.
this past week, one of my students invited me to a teacher appreciation breakfast where she said very nice things about me and made me a present. It had been a Very Bad Week, so it totally made my entire day better and made me happy, despite a migraine.
Just exquisite. I love that dress! And it is very hot here today so it would suit the weather perfectly. Enough daydreaming! Something nice: having cousins I haven’t seen for 7 years finally come and visit from Australia! So wonderful yet strange at the same time as the last time we were together I was 14. Great times. Merry Christmas from New Zealand!
today was my first zumba class. i went with 2 friends who were also newbies. we had it all planned out to be in the back row since we were all a little nervous about doing some of the moves we saw on u-tube videos. turns out… there was only one other person in the class!!!! we definitely looked silly, but had a great time.
My 10 year old daughter writes nice notes to me all the time telling me that she thinks I am a great mom, that she loves me and loves spending time together. I save them all…they are so special to me. She picked out the smarty girl bag and we are going to sew one together for her during the holiday break!
My kind friend plays cards and board games with me. She takes me as I am. She even takes care of the little pup I found by my childrens school that no one called spca to claim. She’s just awesome all around. Everybody deserves a friend like that!
Nicey Jane…I want to be her! I grew up in a big city and went to public school. While I thoroughly enjoyed my childhood, these Nicey Jane fabrics make me want to ride my bike to the local farmers market and pick up items for a picnic. In a meadow.
Hi Heather! Thanks for the giveaway. Love the new line and especially excited about the laminated fabrics! Something interesting…Einstein was arrested on more than one occasion because he forgot to put his pants on before leaving home. I guess he was struck by something brilliant and forgot all else!
I work one day a week at our local quilt store and the owner just got in all of this new line… it is awesome… look on my blog. sorry the photo was taken with my phone.
Nicey Jane and the wink are super cute. I also love the picture of the meadow at the end. Soooo nice! I can almost imagine myself there. I am excited about the laminates!!
The nicest thing my husband has ever done for me? Before we were married, I went home to California one year and spent my birthday there. Upon my return, my husband met me at the airport and we took the water ferry to Boston. (The view of the city from the harbor is gorgeous.) To my surprise, he got us a hotel room at the Boston Harbor Hotel. He told me he planned dinner for us at the Ritx. I said, “Well, I think I can put together a nice outfit from what I have in my luggage.” Well, I didn’t have to worry about that! He had gone to my apartment, searched my closet, selected a couple of dresses, shoes and bags. He even remembered to include a slip and bought nylons. He drew a bath and gave me all the time I needed to get ready. Before we left for dinner, he presented me with a beautiful sapphire and diamond necklace that I wore that night. After dinner, we took a walk around the harbor. That was definitely my best birthday, ever. I wore the necklace on our wedding day.
Well . . . today, some people actually did something kind for me today: they baked me some YUMMY goodies for Christmas!! I teach 3rd grade so interesting things happen daily!! I also had a dad tell me that he noticed a change in his daughter’s work ethic when it came to her school work which he then attributed to my teaching!! It’s not everyday I get to glorious things in one day!!
My husband always knew when I had a stressful day with the kids. He would shoo me out to the garden for 2 or 3 hours to play in the dirt and he would entertain the kids and get them ready for bed for me. I do love that man!
This line of fabric is beautiful!
Well, you have done it again Heather. Another adorable line of fabric! This year for Christmas I made both my mother and my mother-in-law and queen-size quilt. It has been a labor of love and I can’t wait to see both of them open their present on Christmas eve. It has been so fun for me to do something so big for 2 of the greatest women I know. Both of them have been an example of all that is good and right with the world for more than 80plus years. They are a great support to me and my family.
this weekend my friend came over with all of her beading and jewelry making schtuff and gave me a how to on beading. it was fun and got alot of christmas goodies put together.
Soo, my husband lost his wedding band during his first tour of duty in Iraq. He’s not sure how, maybe when he was washing his hands or something 🙂 He didn’t tell me, though….I just saw the email receipt from where he had bought another one online! What a goob! He is currently on his second tour, and occasionally on the phone I’ll ask if he still has his wedding band..just for fun and laughs 🙂
Count me in the giveaway please.
And now for something interesting, or gross. Tonight as my kids were taking a bath my daughter shouts, “MOMMY!” I was on the phone. I peeked in to make sure nobody was drowning and whispered, “I’m on the phone.” I got off shortly thereafter, walked in the bathroom and the biggest poop was floating in the water. My 2-year old couldn’t hold it and they stayed in there while I finished my call. Poor babies. And then as I let the water drain out (after cleaning out what I could), the small bits and pieces were going down the drain that I couldn’t pick up and my daughter watched them hit the drain part and squealed with delight, “Oh this is my favorite part!” As if this is a common occurance! Too funny. How’s that for interesting? 😉
I should remain anonymous if I want my kids to speak to me as teens but I really want to win. 🙂
I adore your new fabric! I can’t wait to make something with it! Something fun I just learned how to do was make homemade marshmallows. I was fairly wary of how they would turn out, but let me tell you, when it started to whip up into fluffy, satiny goodness, and when I licked the beater clean, for a brief moment in time: I was a Rock Star. The stars, sun, and moon were aligned, and there was peace on earth. Doesn’t get any better than that. Unless I was wearing something made with Nicey Jane and licking the beater at the same time…that might top it.
A couple weeks ago my three year old was feeding her pet beta named Word.
“Mom” she asked me, “Does Word have eyes?”
“Yes,” I replied, they just blend in with his blue color”
“Oh, if Word were orange, then I could see his eyes”
“Yes, you probably could”
She then put her arm around me, looked adoringly into my eyes and said the words every mother longs to hear. Or not.
“Momma, we should paint Word.”
“Paint Word!?!” I managed to sputter out without laughing.
“Yes, then he would be orange and I could see his eyes”
“Well, yes, but I don’t think paint is very good for fish”
“It would be a special kind of paint, Momma, we could buy it at the pet store”.
I’m just hoping the pet store is all out of special paint!
Something nice – let’s see – my mom purchased a Cricut for me on Black Friday and let me have my Christmas present early! I have been creating away! I’m really wanting to try to cut fabric with it – but I’m a little afraid!
My UPS man came to my office today to say he did NOT have a package for me that I was expecting. However, I did give him his reesy cups, which are his favorite. So I did something nice for him, and in turn he did something nice for me. He said ‘oh thank you! You just made my day!!!” 🙂 Nice.
…a long time ago on a sweet little street, my then soon-to-be husband bought a tulip from a small girl. I’m sure she had just picked it from her yard and she was selling them on her porch. He then delivered it to me with a kiss on the forehead.
Ooo.. gorgeous. LOVE your work!
I’ve always admired people that have a certain skill they are masters at. Something they were taught when they were very little and have been doing their whole lives. Something thats as natural to them as eating. Something that is a skill they can pursue and make a rich living with, or just have to fall back on, or even just have as a hobby that brings them great joy and reminds them of childhood. For that reason I sew with my 20 month old little girl Olive. I will sew with her her whole life. I hope the hum of the sewing machine, the rattle of the spool, the stacks of colorful fabrics sorted by color will always bring her comfort, joy, confidence, the appreciation for handmade, and an eye for beauty.
I want to win!! My mom actually gave me a money tree for my 21st birthday . . . it was a bouquet of 21 irises (my favorite) with $5 bills tied to each iris!! Such a fun and unique idea!
I absolutely love your fabrics and patterns! So inspiring!
Something nice that happened to me recently… My 16 month old daughter and husband were sick last week and I tried very hard to make them as comfy as possible. A favorite thing around our house is to give back tickles, which I did a lot to my hubby and baby. It was a wonderful turn of events when I wasn’t feeling well myself this week and my baby came and gave me a little pat and scratch on the back. It made me so happy to see that she had learned to do to others what she, herself, liked having done. It was so sweet to know that my baby saw that I was suffering and tried to ease my pain as I had eased hers. What a happy mama moment!
Oh, what gorgeous fabrics!!!
A funny from my daughter – she was telling me about the Christmas story and was saying “Mary and Jofus” instead of “Mary and Joseph” 🙂
I am so glad the smarty girl book bag is now a pattern and I am so glad a cool store in Spokane WA called The Top Stich carries your fabrics!
Something kind: I was made redundant earlier this year and decided to start my own business (PR and freelance writing). With my teeny weeny budget, I approached a graphic designer who I had worked with before and whose design approach and work I just love (Parallax Design) to ask “how much?”. He replied: “Keep your money in your pocket, I’ll do this for you pro bono”. He designed and developed a brand identity, business card, letterhead, invoice, etc, all for free. I’m still gobsmacked by his generosity and so very grateful for the savings as my iMac died shortly after I’d started my business and I had to replace it. Without his generosity, I would have struggled. His name isn’t Jane, but he is Nicey!
Gorgeous Fabric!!! Something Interesting? Well my almost two year old son LOVES to help me sew. He loves to sit on my lap or play with the scraps of fabric whie I sew. A few weeks ago I got out my sewing scissors, and he recognized them. So he ran to the cabinet and pulled out the cord and pedal for my sewing machine and plugged it in all the while saying “sew, sew, sew, mommy sew”
i’m sewing a paper garland for the tree right now…
God actually did something kind for my sister and spared her life. She had just moved to New Mexico and while driving her car on a steep mountainside, her car went off the side. After tumbling down about 25 feet she landed upside down in a stream and somehow God gave her the strength to get herself out of the car as the water was rising inside. Then God gave her the strength to climb up the 25 feet to the road where a passerby stopped and helped her. My sister made this move with only knowing 3 people in New Mexico and without any family even remotely near by (we live in Chicago and Philadelphia), God was there for her. And also the passerby, who did not know her, was so kind to help her for the next couple of days to get back on her feet. This is what I call the most amazing act of kindness from God and a stranger and it saved my sisters life!
Can’t wait for your vinyl fabric to come out. I love vinyl and oilcloth. I have an etsy store around vinyl. Feel free to check it out. http://avella.etsy.com I can’t wait to get my paws on your stuff and have it in my shop. Thanks for making such cute stuff. Okay on to the story.
My step mom sent me flowers to remind me she was thinking of me during this tough season. I love christmas but I do feel that I miss my twin angels in heaven more than usual. It meant so much to me to have someone remember them and me. It has been 2 years since Ava passed away and 2 years and 2 months since her sister Ella passed. I love that she hasn’t forgot. So sweet.
Mine is something weird: I got new shoes today and I am in love. I hate wearing shoes and never thought I’d LOVE a shoe. I recently lamented how lame it is that will spend $50 plus on a bra but the thought of spending that on shoes makes me cringe. I got adorable, COMFORTABLE lime green shoes called “Iggdrasil” by El Naturalista. Yum
I adore your new fabric collection as well. The colors make me happy. Congrats.
Beautiful fabric!!
something really nice someone’s done for me:
My husband had a terrible work accident close to 3 years ago. He has yet to return to work, but did have his last hip surgery this past Spring. A friend at church noticed our bald tires. This past Sunday we left church to find new tires–and a repaired tie-rod–on our van. They had snuck the keys out of my purse, snuck the car away to the shop and returned if to the spot right beside our original one. we didn’t notice until they all stood around giggling as we packed the kids in the car. A whole group of lovely friends was involved, and none of them has much more to spare than ourselves. I bawled with joy over how loved I felt. They were just delighted they surprised us so.
OH I adore Nicey Jane. I can’t wait to hang out with her some more.
A random gift story: When I was in the 9th Grade a boy I did not like very much (but who had different feelings about me) gave me a mug for Christmas that I actually really liked. And now, 19 years later, I realize that my kids drink hot chocolate out of that same mug almost everyday.
I love your fabric and style, I am so motivated and inspired every time I look at your site, thanks for you great work!
This happened last year, but it has made a great impact on me and has kind of changed my Christmas perspective. I was in a local store buying a book entitled “Reflections of Christ”, I had my purse with me, but I had left my wallet at home on accident, but didn’t realize until I was paying. I told the lady sorry and that I would come back, this sweet old man behind my offered to pay, I did not want him to pay because it was an expensive book, I offered to write him a check but he refused and he said to just do something for someone else. He was a sweet old man and he made my Christmas, and I did pass the service on, and it was a great experience, and I will always remember it!
Hi, Heather! Your new collection is just GORGEOUS.
This year I’m doing all handmade for the teachers at school. Excited. 🙂
Love,
Jennifer
This collection is just gorgeous!
Let’s see….well my girls are obsessed with dinosaurs right now, well, one is, the other (my 4 year old) likes to correct everyone and points out that, no, she prefers PTEROSAURS. Apparently, pterodactyls, and the other creatures like them, are not dinosaurs. Please do not make this mistake, unless you want a 5 minute lecture from my overly enthusiastic preschooler! 🙂
i love the dresses these girls are sporting (along with the fabric!). Are they your designs and is there a pattern for them?
I would LOVE to win some money to buy the beautiful fabric! My husband won’t let me get any until January and I am having a hard time restraining myself. For fun my husband takes our little boy to the grocery store to ride the battery operated carts around. They think it’s the best!
any chance these dresses will be a pattern in the future?
How about a gripe turned positive outcome? I was just nagging (er, encouraging) my husband to get a hobby so that I could have an idea of something to buy for him at Christmas. I have fabric NEEDS and so I figure I’m easy. I even showed him your Nicey Jane collection. I’m EASY.
But he is…well, hobbyless. Unless you count Fantasy Football. Which he spends an awful lot of time doing. So that’s his hobby. So lame. It takes up tons of time just staring at the t.v. And wait, it’s more than that now. It’s staring at the t.v, while the laptop is on his lap to check other games and their scores, AND his iPhone in his hand in order to receive play-by-play updates. What in the Wide Wide World of Sports is going on around here??!!!
But then…after festering in my kitchen for awhile, I realized something. He spends the same amount of time with his “hobby” as I spend with all of mine, and yet…his is FAR less expensive. Yes, the fee for the cable, internet, and phone costs a fortune, but we have those things anyway. But, compare his hobby to mine with regards to price? Ooh, I can drop $50 in a nanosecond. Multiple times throughout the season. He has an entry fee, and this season, both of his leagues are winning and he’s guaranteed his entry fees back in winnings – for both leagues!
So far, my hobby hasn’t guaranteed any money back in winnings.
I guess I need to let the poor guy off the hook.
But I still don’t know what to get him for Christmas…
Happy Holidays!
hi heather,
so excited for your new fabric release. it’s gorgeous! can’t wait until it hits Australia.
i’ve just had my whole family hit town to celebrate my graduation and it was the loveliest time. I was so touched to share this event with them
Congratulations on a wonderful range of fabrics. I have just ordered some in the Porch Swing colourway.
I love the fact that my husband gives me time to read my Google Reader and start a blog. Not being able to attend my quilt group anymore it means a lot to me to be able to read all my favourute blogs. I still feel connected to the quilting world.
something kind someone has done for me….4 weeks ago I had a finger reconstructed, with a 7mth old and 4year old this has been a challenge. A neighbour cooked dinner one night, a friend brought around dinner another night and a lady who I don’t know all that well from a few doors down baked a cake for the kinds. How great it is to be surrounded by kind hearted people.
There is nothing better than a cold, wet and gloomy day here in the UK, music on and a pile of your gorgeous fabric to work with. I LOVE it!!
I just love your fabrics Heather. Something interesting …. hmmm oh, it’s my birthday today!
Nice video. I love your fabrics. Kisses from Barcelona, Spain.
Hi Heather, Thankyou for designing such amazing fabric and beautiful patterns.
You have me dreaming of hot chocolate and candy canes! The nicest thing that has happened to me lately would be my next door neighbour giving me a $120 gift voucher to the Maggie Beer shop in the Barossa Valley. My boyfriend and I had just moved to Adelaide(Australia) about a month earlier and I was feeling a quite home sick. She totally made my month. Its nice to know there are some lovely ppl in this world!
Merry Christmas…ps Im off to buy some candy canes and hot chocolate!
xoxo Cass
Love the new fabric collection, so cheerful!
First real snowstorm is expected this morning and we’ll be taking kids on a walk when it starts and get some hot chocolate when we return.
Daily I am aware of how kind people are because of the myriad of kind things they do for me, but perhaps the kindest thing was when I was having a particularly hard time at work and my brother drove many miles just to spend time with me. It is something I will always remember.
Something interesting about me? I cook dinner almost every night without ever tasting it. I am too picky to eat what I am cooking for everyone else in the family, so I just hope it turns out good. Usually it does.
I do love your new fabrics. So adorable!
And here’s something on the sort of interesting front…When I was about 7 or 8, our class play was Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I was scheduled to play Mama Bear, I think. But due to a chicken pox outbreak, I ended up playing all three bears. So I hopped from one spot to the other saying “I’m Papa Bear. I’m Mama Bear. I’m Baby Bear.”
Wow – those fabrics are gorgeous! If I win your giveaway you can bet I’ll be kissing them hello. So here is something kind… recently someone I don’t know was in front of me in a drive-thru line. When she was up at the window, she paid for my order, waved and drove off. That random act of kindness made my day and left me looking for an opportunity to pay it forward. I’m off to make muffins for breakfast – we’re snowed in today, no school or work and I can’t wait to cozy up with my kids and watch Christmas movies.
Something nice? My husband does nice things for me everyday. I despise vacuuming; he vacuums. He helps with the dishes, the laundry, and does house renovations! I am so lucky!
My random act of kindness is happening right now. We’re in the midst of a blizzard here in Iowa, with 12+ inches of snow already on the ground and horrible winds. My wonderful neighbor is currently clearing my driveway, which is drifted higher than I have ever seen. We’ll be delivering a loaf of homemade bread later on today.
Thank you for sharing!
Such a beautiful collection! I have been tirelessly sewing up a storm of gifts over here for the upcoming holidays. I love making handmade gifts for people, I think about them the entire time I am sewing along.
I love your new line:) I gets me giddy when you come out with a new fabric line because your lines are always my favorite.
Well something kind someone has done for me lately… well the sonogram tech told me, my husband, and my 2 year old daughter the other day that we are having another girl. I wanted to hug that lady… I really wanted another girl. I didn’t find out what I was having with my first and would have bet you money I was having a boy. Well she is all girl with a head full of hair and I love her so. She just has the kindest soul and always so happy. She tells me everyday how much she loves her family!
Most recent kindness shown unto me: I just realized, two weeks after the fact, that I failed to send birthday treats into school with my daughter who is in the first grade. Kind of a glaring omission, right?
Anyway, so I cautiously approached Caroline on the matter and she immediately said she wanted to take a belated treat, and that magic cookies would fit the bill nicely.
I don’t like making magic cookies. I don’t like making graham cracker crusts. But I wasn’t really in a position to negotiate.
At any rate (bear with me, I’m landing this plane in two or three more sentences), that evening I took my eldest daughter out to accomplish a miracle of no small means (find and purchase a black dress that doesn’t make her look like an extra in Dynasty).
And wonder of wonders: when I returned home late that night, the magic cookies were cooling on the counter. Thanks to my very busy, very sweet husband.
I’m going to remember that one for a long time.
Happiest of holidays to you!
Mother Nature gave me a snow day today! Gorgeous fabric!
On Saturday, my Mom gave birth to my first little sister! Her name is Hadley. She is such a sweetie. 🙂 After 16 years and four sons after me, Mom is sure excited!
We’re celebrating our first snow day of the year. That means – hot cocoa, cookies & snow slushies are in our future. These patterns make me long for spring (even though this is only our 2nd snowfall of the season.)
My husband and I were being silly one night after dinner with our girls and we were telling them how much we loved each one by throwing our arms out as long as they could reach and saying, “I love you THIS much!”. Our 2 year old starting mimicking and yelling, “I love you, too!” My 5 year old wanted to join in and told us all happily, “Dad! I love you as big as your tummy!”
Love the new fabric! Can’t wait to get my hands on te laminate!
Today is a snow day! As a college student, this day off of classes is much needed…this week is dead week (time to cram for all those finals next week) and then I’m homeward bound! This day off gives me the perfect excuse to get some Christmas gifts done 🙂
http://www.myniftynotions.blogspot.com
OOOh I want to win! A friend of a friend (who I’ve never met) sold my wares at a craft fair in MN for me and did really well! I was grateful that a stranger believed in my product and helped me out!
Hmm.. Something interesting…
ok. The Hawaiian language only has 12 letters, which is why ‘Merry Christmas’ in Hawaiian is
“Mele Kalikimaka!”
A little boy in my daughter’s kindergarten class gave her a bag of “reindeer poop” (whoppers) for a Christmas gift. I thought it was hilarious every time she asked me, “Can I eat some of my reindeer poop after lunch, mom?”
I heart Nicey Jane.
She is so nice and Janey.
I love her spice…
and her touch of zaney.
My friend she will be,
of that I have no doubt,
When I make her into a dress
and then take her out! )
Love the new NiCey jAnE fabric! well here’s my funny story when my son Adrian was about 7 years old he was a big eater – I couldn’t keep the pantry stocked with that kid, he just ate & ate but was tall for his age & lean and energetic so of course he had no fat on him whatsoever- so I asked him ‘Adrian where does all the food go after you eat it?’ and he looks at me with this serious face and says “I dunno down my legs?”(as if the food just disintegrated)
It was so innocent funny- we still laugh about it today at age 17!
Congratulations on another Beautiful Collection Heather! Off to Material Girls Quilt Shop for my HB Fix! Happy Holidays!
Wow, I’m just LOVING these fabrics! Here’s something exciting…my nephew was born last night! My sister was in labor for 2 hours, pushed 5 times and out he popped!! So exciting and I can’t wait to meet him next month!
Heather love your fabrics. Is there a pattern for the dress you made in the pink bicycle picture?Love it.Happy Holidays!
Love Love the new collection!!
Last year..for my 30th birthday…my husband totally surprised me and had all my good friends and their husbands meet us in Nasville for a weekend. He usually doesn’t like to spend money, but he paid for everyeone’s trip…a nice dinner that night and hotel. I was so shocked and we had the best time!!! It was perfect.
Most recently, a fellow seller on Etsy found me in an Etsy chat and we discovered she is local to me (or nearly so….not too far away). So when I found out she was heading out shopping, (and with me being stuck at home due to recent knee surgery) I hopefully asked if she would be willing to take me along…not even THINKING that I am a complete stranger to her! And amazingly enough, she agreed (bless her heart). She’s a very nice lady. In exchange, I’m going to teach her to sew, since she’s apparently always wanted to learn.
I love the new fabric! (not a big surprise) I’d love a gift certificate to be able to sew my daughter some new items.
My fun fact? She was born on November 3rd, 2009 and already weighs over 11 lbs and is 23″ long!
What a delight – the slideshow with all the new stuff, how fun! Can not wait to get ahold of the roses in the gray / blue combo. yummy! Something funny, yesterday, I asked one of my twins if she knew why geese fly in “v” formation. Her answer, “because “v” stands for vacation and that’s where they are headed, south for a winter vacation!”. Sounds logical I think! Thanks Heather! Beautiful work as always.
Even though my husband can’t eat chocolae he swapped his kris kringle gift at a Christmas party this week for a box of chocolates for me!
Something fun (and sweet.)
In 1974, with her first sewing machine, my mom made an animal quilt for me. She traced the animal designs from a coloring book. The fabric for the animals was made with some of the clothes I had worn my first year. Then she appliqued a different animal on each block of the quilt.
I have been holding onto this quilt for over 35 years. Why wait, why keep it in a box? What was I saving it for, since my children are now 6 and 4?
I got out my needle and thread, made some minor repairs to the quilt, washed it, and wrapped it up to give as a Christmas gift to my 4yr old son Jack this year.
Wishing you and your family a Merry, Blessed Christmas!
Ok, it’s official, I must now learn to sew! Nicey Jane completely rocks! I’ve been a long-time lurker on your blog and although I don’t sew, I’m always completely inspired by your fabric and your blog. My projects so far mostly involve Mod Podge and galvanized buckets, along with some yo-yos and flowers. (I first came across this site when looking for directions to make yo-yos, like my grandma used to make.) Anyway, I love the new collection! I’m thrilled about the blue/green/yellow color palette. (I have 3 boys who hate pink.) I’m extra thrilled about the laminated fabric! (I have 3 MESSY boys.) No room for a witty story–this is way too long already.
Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Heather, your fabrics are very inspiring. I love to sew and recently didn’t realize how much sewing does for me, until my machine had to be repaired. I have to say I almost bought a second machine. The simple act of kindness was that the store did not charge me for the labor to resolve my machine problems. I know they had said they had spent over 5 hours on it…so I was expecting a large bill. But, when they told me how much I owed and that they took care of the labor for part of it… what a joy! That and getting my beloved machine back. 🙂
Happy Stitching!
Paula 😉
LOVING the new collection!!!
Here is something that happened to me that will always stick out in my head….
Last year my husband and i were at the mall with the little one just walking around browsing and such. When we got off of the elevator in Sears we walked right past the sewing machine section. HEAVEN!! well I happened across a 4 spool Kenmore serger on sale for $250!! No extra cash! Boo! We had to walk away…Later that night DH and his dad were going out and his dad wanted to buy DH an Xbox360. They were getting bored in our little apt that we all shared. Little did I know that they drove to the store to get the Xbox and while in the parking Lot decided to do the BEST THING EVER!!! They drove 45 mins back to the mall right before it closed and bought me my serger!!!! All for me!! Then my hubby ran in the door and put in on the table, I was speechless!! They gave up their fun game system for my fun, but very noisy, serger!! Thinking about that day still makes me smile!
Sorry for the novel. 🙂
I dropped a favorite earring today down the bathroom drain. My dad gave it to me for my 12th birthday. I called him crying this morning. He drove all the way to my house at lunch and took apart the sink trap. He found it!! He remembers buying them for me 25 years ago. Best Dad Ever!
i am IN LOVE with your fabric. something nice-my mother told me the other day that my 2 year old is like having two 2 year olds. thank you mother for understanding my insanity!
Beautiful fabrics! I LOVE the dress in the photos (with the yellow piping and buttons). What pattern was used?
Thanks!
I’m dying to get my greedy little hands on some of this fabric so I can make lots of cute stuff. 🙂
I remember a lot of times when my mom would just randomly give me a tube of chapstick or a new thing of mascara or something like that. Just out of the blue, not anything extravagant or expensive – it was always just nice to know she was thinking about me and the little things I liked and might need.
Let’s see… well, my 2-year old calls me “Your Highness” all the time. There isn’t much to complain about there, huh!
Love the song in your video. Who’s singing? I’m craving Christmas treats, but I don’t want to have to clean the kitchen first. Don’t you hate when you have to wash the pans before you can even start dinner? I’m going to a cookie swap in a few weeks and I have no clue what cookie to bring; very stressed since there can’t be chocolate chip and no dublicates with other attendees. Merry Christmas, Heather! Beautiful fabric line.
Wow. This collection looks so, so, so, so, so lovely! It’s so amazing and inspiring! Thank you, Heather!
My brother, who is older than me in 10 years, has invented the nickname Fafuna for me. no one knows when and why exactly it happened, but it became my name at home. I love it. It’s Fa-foo-na. He also comes up with funny songs about me! It’s really funny. I love it. These nickname and songs mean – for me – home, family, love, good memories and beautiful things. I am thankful for them!
Thank you for making me think about it again,
Fafuna :).
What a great giveaway!
My name is also Heather and my little man is an Elijah, too! When my husband was deployed to Iraq last year, I tried to keep some resemblance to normalcy by taking my (then) 1 year old out for what was our traditional family “Date Night” on Saturdays. I would bring a camera and post pics for daddy to feel like he was there for our night out. Well, as one years olds do, Elijah threw a huge fit one Saturday night and NOTHING I could do could calm the little guy…I ended up shoving my credit card to the waitress and waiting in the parking lot for her to bring out food to us. When she came out, she told me my card wasn’t charged because someone had covered by tab and had written a note to me. The note said simply “I have been there.” At that moment, where I felt the most alone and far away from my husband, my stronghold, I knew that someone had cared and noticed. It was definitly once of the nicest things ever done for me!
When my neice was about 3 years old we spent the day together and watched the Wizard of Oz.
The next day we went to our local supermarket and there was a “little person” in front of us paying for their groceries.
As if my neices stares weren’t enough, she YELLED out, “Look! Aunty Crystal – It’s a MUNCHKIN!!!
I could have died that day. Now that she is 14, I still remind her of my humiliation by making embarassing comments about her while we are together in public places. I love that girl! =)
Beautiful fabric! Makes me excited for spring.
I had a friend clean up my entire craft corner when she stayed the weekend after Thanksgiving. It’s a little messy again but what a wonderful surprise!
Just the other day I stopped by Starbucks for a warm treat, and was digging through my purse for my credit card, which had mysteriously disappeared from my wallet, and the barista told me my drink was on her! Even after I did finally find my card (after completely emptying my purse, of course), she still insisted that I didn’t have to pay. It was a small thing, but so unexpected and kind!
Oh, my gosh, oh, my gosh…I am so, so ,so in love with Nicely Jane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yesterday we went to a Chinese garden with my daughter. There were a dozen kai fish gathering underneath a bridge when we were on it. My daughter (2 year old) saw them and kept saying “oh, my godge”. What she meant was of course “oh, my gosh”. It was super cute though.
Cute fabric. Congratulations! 🙂
Gosh… your fabric is delicious and I love your bike too… I wish it was warm enough to ride a bike.
Okay, so I was babysitting this little girl (she is only 3 and like super smart) and I said, “I’m a tiger and I will eat you!” and She said, “That is preposterous Dempsey there are no tigers loose in America!” I kid you not that is what she said!
love the colors! when my best friend (who i work with) can tell i’m having a bad day, she’ll go grab me lunch. it’s so nice to be taken care of when nothing is going right!
Something interesting, I learned swing dancing in college and I love it. I really, really wish I lived near a city that had any kind of scene for lindy. Anyway, I got to go to a bunch of camps and workshops in college and learned from some of the original dancers of the lindy hop like Frankie Manning and Norma Miller.
Nicey Jane is so fun! It makes me so glad I am a girl!!!
Dearest Heather. You make the most beautiful fabrics. I ordered the Hop Dots in selveral colourways. I can’t wait to get them! I’d love to see you design a Christmas fabric line. Just gorgeous it would be!
I’m a single Mom and I recently lost my job that I had for over 10 years. I was pretty scared at first, but I decided to take the plunge and go back to school to take teaching. Best thing I have ever done! I always wanted to continue my schooling, and it has been awesome so far. The only negative thing that I can think of is that I haven’t had time to sew. It’s killing me! I am so happy that Christmas break is coming up so that I can make some Christmas presents, and I would love to have some Heather Bailey fabric to play with…that would be a dream come true!! 🙂
The kindest thing that comes to mind is my sweet mother getting my neighbor lady to teach me to sew! My mother was a seamstress and could have taught me, but she was wise enough to know that a teenager wouldn’t listen – or maybe she just wanted me out of the house for a bit! Anyway, I learned to love sewing and now quilting. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your new line Nicey Jane – doesn’t hurt that my best friend’s name is Jane!
Oooohhh I love Nicey Jane!
My interesting story….
I married my husband in 2000 and my sister married her husband in 2003. My husband’s sister was single and my sister’s husband’s brother was single at the time. My sister and I knew our in-laws would be a match made in heaven. The only problem was the fella lived in Seattle and the sweet gal lived in Colorado Springs. Somehow, we convinced them to go on a date (which required a plane ticket, of course). They married about a year later and now have a 3 year old little girl and a baby boy on the way.
I can’t explain to anyone how we are all related without it sounding weird/illegal. So maybe this is a weird story. But if you’ve ever successfully matched anyone up, I’m sure you know the feeling of pure joy when you see it all come together like you hoped.
A very good friend of mine brought me a bowl of tortilla soup AND the recipe- just ’cause she’s so nice! It really made my day!!! 🙂
Thanks for the chance at some of your AWESOME new goodies! 🙂
Beautiful fabrics…ALL of them..they inspire me and fill me with joy just looking at them.
Something nice just for me…my husband just brought home a fresh cut Christmas tree that is filling our home with pine fragrance…ahhhh….makes me happy!
This collection is beautiful. Here is a funny story….
I am lucky enough to have boy/girl twins. When they were 4 my daughter was really into all of the princesses. We read many of the stories. One day while walking through the produce section of the store my son says….”hey mom can we buy some poison apples?” I turn to see him pointing to the box for making candy apples. Right on the front is a big, red, shiny and perfect apple. That still makes me laugh. Don’t worry we quickly reviewed poison….again!
I had so many acts of kindness done for me when I had open heart surgery twice… meals, babysitting, rides to doctor visits for at least 4 months after the first one and 2 months after the 2nd one. (the first one was more severe.)
Now I am thankful to be healthy and celebrating my 50th (never thought I would make it!) on December 31st with friends and family. What a nice surprise that would be to win your beautiful fabric! Thanks for the opportunity.
Well, here is my giggle from this evening to share…I was downstairs washing dishes while my husband supervised our 5 yr old son in the shower. At one point my husband came down and said our son was singing Christmas songs in Spanish and Japanese while in the shower. I asked him what he meant and he said our son was singing this song “Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad…blah blah blah (some words he could not understand)…Konichiwa!!” I couldn’t help myself from busting out laughing!! Who knows, we might have a new favorite Christmas carol over here. Oh, and I cannot forget to say that the new collection is Fab-u-lous!! I am itching to sew..I haven’t in over a month and I am going through withdrawls 🙂
Your fabric is amazing!!!Just when I thought that it couldn’t get any better then along comes Nicey Jane! The most wonderful thing that has happened to us is when someone paid for our family dinner in appreciation of my husband’s service for our country! Something that I will never forget! There are still nice people in this world!
Here is something nice that happened to me. I took my kids to see Santa. Apparently my daughter told Santa I made her dress(a christmas Kyoko). He told me twice that I was talented and then as I was leaving he said I needed to give Mrs. Claus some lessons! Sweet Santa. Made my day! A complement from an unlikely source. Cool.
I love eating liversausage sandwiches with ketchup. How’s that for weird?
Lisa
p.s. i love your blog.
something about me…I just started sewing this year, after my momtried for YEARS to teach me and I love it!
Happy Holiday’s, and happy sewing, I can’t wait to see the new line, and I can’t wait to sew with it. I love love love the names. This is very creative of you. I read your blog, after my Granddaughters Christmas program at Church, and I’m very blessed, and thankful for our Savior.
So God bless you, and keep creating.
I love the Nicey Jane line of fabric! So cute.
I sat down to the computer tonight and saw a note on our digital sticky pad…my hubby left a little compliment for me. It was so sweet.
On Monday night my family, 3 adult couples and my DH and I were at a Christmas charity dinner we all start the season with every year. 2 yrs ago my son, Sean brought a woman with him for the first time, and this Monday night they announced their engagement! It was so fun, we love Andree and it especially makes me happy since he is 40 and I was thinking he might be alone. I think the older marriages must run in the family 2 of my brothers were 40 too before they found the “one”.
My son made me a box at my MOPS meeting – the box was empty with his handprint on the front and the sweetest note inside, basically saying that my hands are empty but my heart is full of love for you. So special!
First to say LOVE LOVE LOVE this and all your exciting stuff. After spending 2 years in the midst of a BK, and attempting to defeat the AZ economic downfall, I was walking thru the Bernina Connection in Phx on my 1/2 hour lunch yesterday and saw your fabrics on display. I was soooooo in love with them that I was deeply saddened that my old sewing machine took a terd and thus had nothing to sew with. On my way back to the office I decided “screw it” I’ve been through enough! I deserve to create again. So I’m buying a brand new Bernina this weekend- just to sew with your pretty creations!!! You’re so inspiring! Thank you Heather! You brightened my year! BTW- Where can I get the pattern for the dress you are wearing on your pink bike? LOVE IT! Keep up the good stuff. 😉
Nicey Jane is one cool chick! Here in the southern hemisphere we have Christmas during summer. Instead of cosying up by the fire with hot chocolate and candy canes we have cool cocktails and a barbecue for Christmas lunch. I do envy those of you in the upper half of the world that you can sit around your roaring fire with snow falling outside on Christmas day – but having just left winter behind I’m sure I’ll manage! Happy Christmas from New Zealand everyone – wherever you are!
Pretty! Something to share… Back a few months ago I had the yucky flu and was quarantined to my room for pretty much 2 weeks. One morning, much to my surprise, one of my awesome friends brought me a delicious cherry limeade from sonic which absolutely made my week! And she gave me a card addressed to Ms. Halpert – since I would love to marry Jim from The Office!
As a kid I wanted to be grow up to be a french fry giver, as in the person at a fast food restaurant that puts the french fries into their boxes. I thought it would be wonderful to be around all of those fries all day long. I still love french fries, but I’ve chosen a different occupation.
I am so excited to finish my crafting list for Christmas. So far I’ve made hair bows and headbands for my littlest girl and jewlery for my work Christmas party gift exchange. Next up is an apron, and lots of hooded towels (some with bear ears). Thanks for the giveaway! Love your blog- just bought some new fabrics and patterns of yours for the Smarty Girl bag and I’m hoping the scraps can make some pincushions. Hmm… might have to add pincusions to the craft list:).
First of all…I am in love with Nicey Jane!!! One interesting story about me, when I was five I broke my arm by falling off a bucket, got stitches on my chin from riding a bike and trying to go up a curb, and had to get stitches on the top of my head after playing in the crawl space. Three seperate incidents, three hospital visits all within a couple of weeks. My poor parents!
I absolutely LOVE the fabric!!! First off, what is the song on the youtube video? I loved it and wanted to snap my fingers and tap while listening to it!
Okay I’m going for something random and weird to tell you. For the last 2 nights when my husband and I have been in our hot tub looking up at the stars we hav seen what look like stars steadily moving across the sky. No flashing lights like you get on aeroplanes and too high to be planes and we are not in a flight path. They move too slow for shooting stars so what ar these we wonder. I know really random and weird. LOVING your new collection!!!!
Love love love your fabrics & the little sing song that went with your youtube thingy. Okeydokey something sweet, my little 2 year old bent down to look down at some cuts/grazes on my leg that I don’t remember inflicting on myself. She put her soft little hands on the cuts & said “aww Mama how you hurt yourself? It looks wery wery ouch. Aww you poor darlin'” then gave me wee kiss on the injuries. So alas even when she’s flinging herself on the footpath(sidewalk) in a tantrum in front of the entire neighbourhood, I will endevour to remember her pure little heart that has temporarily gone awol!!
Over Thanksgiving my son was learning to ride his bike without training wheels, and in between peeling potatoes and basting a turkey I was running outside trying to catch a good picture. The last time I went out he looked up to say hi and boom, hit the mailbox. He was fine but shaken up, and to sort of cheer him up with a laugh I told him to watch me try to ride his 16″ kids bike. So in my holiday outfit, complete with 4″ heels, I proceeded to ride around and actually succeeded in staying upright even though I hadn’t been on a bike in about 10 years. It worked and he got right back on, but I realized that I want a bike reeeeally bad now, and after seeing your pink one I must have one like it!
Love Nicey Jane by the way, can’t wait to get some in my own hands!
Nothing very witty to add here. Just wanted to say that this line of fabric makes me sigh. It is just lovely. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us and allowing us to bring some of it into our lives in one way or another.
Peace.
Beautiful fabric Heather. I enjoyed the movie and music. I am hoping to actually see your fabric here in SD. Or maybe I will have to cross the state line into Iowa. Whatever the case, I will make it my goal to find your fabric in an independent quilt store.
Heather I love your new fabric I can’t wait to see on my local fabric store…so exciting!!!!!
The girl in the pics…is that the one you talk about, the one you try to follow her car???
GAsp….I’m still trying to catch my breath. Nicey is SO beautiful. You’ve got talent girl! I just love your fabric.
Recently I made a couple new pillows for our brown leather couch. My husband tends to love the beautiful, but more drab colors of nature…dark greens, browns, tans, greys, etc….well, I decided to inject a little life into those pillows in what I thought was a subtle way. One pillow had an 8 inch log cabin, made with several more colorful shades of nature (blue, green, pink, gold)…surrounded by a 2-3 in. border of linen. My sweet, wonderful, outdoorsy, handsome husband took one look at “ALL THAT COLOR” and said “Wow, what happened to the green pillows we used to have?” Goodness, I love that man…but a girl’s just got to have some color…at least here and there!
Girl you are a inspiration, I have got brave since starting following your blog(and seen you on ME magazine- I got 3 copies of that magazine, gave 1 way). Now that I been sewing more I have made 1 twin size quilt for my daughter, dresses, skirts and the most beautiful dress with lots of ruffles made with one of your fabrics too(THAT SHE WEAR ON HER 1ST PIANO RECITAL) and right now a pea coat with one of your fabrics too…thanks for give me beautiful fabric and inspiration.
Oh my heavens! I just found your fabrics at a local shop here in Utah and I fell in LOVE with the Nicey Jane collection. Now I’m trying to find out exactly what I want to make with it and which design (or two) to make it with! Maybe a cute dress like in the pictures…
my husband bought me an antique christmas tree. sounds a bit odd, eh? i saw it at a thrift/antique store about 4 years ago in a box. I didnt even know if all the pieces were there but i knew i had to have it because it was big and old and FLOCKED! swoon! we had a tree. we didnt need another tree. i mentioned that i loved it to my husband and he informed me that he had “christmas shopping” to do and scooted off. 2 hours later he came back with the tree. Every time I open the box to put it up each year I think of that story. 🙂 He is so sweet and thoughtful.
Heather, Congrats on Jane. She is beautiful. My hubby brings me coffee in bed many mornings. Thank you for the opportunity to win some of the gorgeous fabrics. Take care and God bless, Cory
Yesterday when I picked up my 6 yr old dd from school she told me that I was the “bestest” mom ever! Who knew?!
Amazingly beautiful! I cannot wait to get my hands on some of your new fabric! The photography is absolutely georgous, too!
I always seem to clam up and can’t think of anything to say when commenting…hmmmm. Pretty funny I get nervous about posting a message.
Okay, my dad is currently serving a tour in Iraq. I have to say that his selfless service completely amazes me. He is always e-mailing and calling to make sure my mom is happy and taken care of, he checks on his grandkids to see what they are up to, and makes sure we are surviving without him.
I can’t even imagine how difficult it must be for the soldiers to be so far from home…especially during the holidays. I am grateful for those that protect our freedom (whether we agree with the war or not) for they sacrifice so much!
Yesterday my nephew told me he’s building an underground fort — it will be 30 feet deep and accommodate 40 people. It will take about 2 years to finish. At first he will be the main worker …”because no one else has the spark” … but he plans to recruit some kids and the construction workers next door and pay them ($40)… so then others will get the spark too … there was more but I was laughing too hard to remember it all.
ps — i forgot —- nicey jane saddlebags sound so great! … hope you’ll share a pattern or tute when you’re done!
Your bike is so sweet! I commute to work by bike every morning, and today I needed to be in the office extra early. So, I found myself under a dark, clear sky sailing along whisper-quiet streets with no cars, no bikes, no one around. It was such a sweet, beautiful morning between me and my bicycle. I hope you find some of those moments yourself.
I hurt my shoulder this week and my very sweet husband who *hates* to give massages, nicely offered to rub my shoulder and he made it feel so much better. When someone offers to do something they don’t like to do just because they love you is pretty awesome.
BTW, I love love love that dress! Is that pattern available anywhere? It’s so cute.
Oh Heather Bailey! I can’t say enough how much I LOVE your fabrics. Seriously, they are an inspiration. I met you when you came to SLC back in September and I told you that you and your fabrics are what inspired me to learn to sew. Now, something that I thought I could never like, I absolutely love doing. And it is all thanks to you and your wonderful fabrics. Thanks for bringing your talent to us and inspiring us all to create! Happy Holidays!!
Great fabric collection! Love the colorways. I also love the model’s dress, and your bike is very cute! My friend, Pam, sends me great cards just for fun. One had a couple of geese on it with the words, “Yackity, Yak, yak.” My kids didn’t know what that meant. I didn’t realize they’d never heard that phrase before… Thanks for the chance at a great giveaway.
Wowie!! Love the collection- and LOVE the video! (that song embodies your collection to the fullest- how fun!)
Something sweet someone did recently- a fellow Army wife and I were exchanging babysitting, and while she was out on errands, she picked me up a luscious hot chocolate and some yummy Ghirardelli mints. After a long, cold day without hubby, that seemed to just hit the spot!
I don’t have a cute story, but was wondering (and probably you’re sick of being asked this) if maybe sometime soon the pattern for the second dress would be available? Possibly by mid-March so that I could have some hope of getting my act in gear to make it by the summer…hahahah.
oh the most thoughtful gift… oh I know!
I am sort of an odd ball, liking a little bit of everything here and there so am SUPER, SUPER hard to shop for. I know this about myself so I usually tell people, who ask what I want, that a gift card will work. My male friend from work gave me the best gift completely out of the blue. Most people at our office, if they remember, just give out simple “Happy Holidays” cards. Not this guy – he knew that I (and several other friends) really enjoyed a lot of different crafts so he gathered his courage and found a chain craft store in our area that had gift cards. He then went to purchase several for all his crafty friends. He LITERALLY made my Christmas last year!
This is not uncommon I am sure. However, for me it was a surprise. I run a business from my home and keep to myself. Early this year at age 40 I found out I had a very Large precancerous diagnosis in which they said I needed a double mastectomy. I did that two months later- 6 plus weeks of no lifting or cleaning or cooking. My mom traveled to stay with me for all those weeks which was a blessing, but people from all over that I know sent me pre made food and gift certificates for food, which was a HUGE help to me and mom. I don’t cook much and was worried of that. So there you have it something common, but such a surprise that soo many people were concerned and helpful. Kristen
So I have a confession to make…I’m a teller and when I’m not busy at work I can’t get enough of your blog! Luckily it hasn’t been blocked yet! My mom stumbled upon the trash ties website-I am getting Trash Ties for Christmas and I can’t wait!! And from there we found this website. One of the very first quilts I made as a sophomore in high school was out of your freshcut fabric line and it is one of my most treasured posessions! :] Needless to say I LOVE all of your stuff and can’t wait for this semester to be over so I can get crafty-finals are too time consuming!
Love, Love, Love Nicey Jane! You never cease to amaze me when you come up with exactly what I am dreaming about! Can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Fun thing: Grew up w/ a Mom that could not tie even a bow, still can’t. Started (hand)sewing Barbie doll clothes at age ten from printed panels and in seventh grade made my first “outfit” at school. Can still remember every detail! I was at the Salvation Army the other day looking for glass plates for Christmas cookies and out of the corner of my eye, I saw it! The very same pattern that the first outfit was made from and even in the same size. It has made me smile since and is hanging(framed)in my sewing room.
My Christmas present that year was a portable sewing machine from Montgomery Wards, my Mom just said, “Don’t ask me for help!” 🙂
I love how you include stories with your fabric lines. It gives them a sense of history and connection. Sometimes the associations of an item make it more valuable than the item itself.
During the mid to late forties, as they still struggled to overcome the effects of the Depression, my father gathered the few pennies he had as a young boy and purchased a flat of pansies for my grandmother for Mother’s Day. She planted them by the front door and enjoyed them all summer. The next year he did the same, and for many years to come. Eventually he joined the military, did a tour overseas, came home, got married and had a family of his own.
Many years later, after my grandfather had passed away and she moved to a small cottage in the country, my father again brought her a flat of pansies for Mother’s Day. She again planted them by her front door and told her granddaughters of the many pansies she had received from their father. He continued this tradition for many years until she moved into an apartment. She is gone now, but she has given me a snippet of family history, and I never see pansies without thinking of her and smiling.
Thank you for seeing that an article can be beautiful in its own right, but an article with a tale to tell has not only a pretty face, but a soul as well.
I’ve been reading “The Giving Tree” to my daughters for awhile now (and still can’t get through it without getting a lump in my throat!)
Last night, my six year-old daughter read the whole book to ME. The story sounded even more beautiful and meaningful when read in her quiet but confident voice.
Thanks for the opportunity!

Oh, I love your fabric, love it! The best thing happened to me while playing toys with my three-year-old. He looked up at me and said, “Do you know who the best mom is? You!” Merry Christmas to me! He so gets to stay up an hour later tonight!
It’s been a roller coaster couple of weeks for me – we lost my 86 year old mom 2 weeks ago but we welcomed my first grandson into the world just 2 days ago. So we’ve had joy even while grieving…
Your new fabrics are lovely and cheerful, as are all of your collections.
today I learned that only female reindeers have antlers at Christmas time, the males have all shed theirs by this time of year, so Santa’s reindeers are all females, obviously. I think women make the world go round. Is that weird enough? Now give me some fabric! Just kidding, that was an Adam Sandler nod.
One of the kindest things someone has done for me lately happened last Saturday about 4 a.m. I was in labor with my sixth child (only our second girl) when I thought I heard the whir-whir-whir of the sewing machine. I asked my husband what my daughter (our oldest, 16) was doing and he said, “sewing a blanket for the baby”. Of course she was! That’s just how she is. Thoughtful and crafty! Our baby girl was welcomed into the world with a beautiful new blanket and lots of love from her sister and brothers. My daughter loves your blog by the way!
Hm… my sweet daughter just had her first ballet recital and danced beautifully — she was a Russian dancer in “Scenes from the Nutcracker” — “Russian”, she explained to me, “because we have to dance super duper fast.” :p
Today my adorable husband gave me a shoulder massage because I had a painful muscle spasm. He *hates* giving massages which made it even sweeter.
Something nice…a very nice Etsy shop owner invited me over for tea and scones after Christmas. I love her shop and we realized we lived in the same city and I can’t wait to meet her. She is so talented and I can always use some new inspiration! Love your new line…beautiful as always!
For my birthday, my husband surprised me with a daycation for a great lunch and fabric shopping at a huge sewing store that is located 3 hours away from the little town where we live. He told me to look, browse, shop, and buy! We had a wonderful time just getting away for the day. I bought some of your fabric and patterns and am still having a fun time. (especially the pear)
Tonight I rocked my little girl and told her about the time I found a little bird nest in our Christmas tree. I had forgotten all about that beloved little nest. We kept it for years and years and we always fought over who was going to put it on the tree. I think I am going to go out and buy a little nest tomorrow and put it in my Christmas tree to remind me of the magic and simplicity of childhood.
My husband and I began dating right around Christmas. We were young and at that awkward “am I your girlfriend? Is this serious?” stage. I was assured by my friends that his Christmas gift to me would speak volumes about how he felt for me. If it was jewelery or something profoundly meaningful, it meant he was really into me. I gave him a basket full of items that were reminders of inside jokes and fun experiences. He gave me socks. He thought he had given me the world’s best gift (because as a poor college student my socks were pretty shabby)and I cried myself to sleep that night. It’s all very funny now. I think this year he’ll be getting socks from me 🙂
I was trying to think of a great story but on reading through all your hundreds of comments, I found lots of great new blogs so… I guess that’s my great story 🙂
Sure love the fabulous fabrics. My birthday is today and I stayed home with a sick child and then had pizza with the family with ginger ale to drink and creme brule and Italian cream cake for desert. My favorite is creme brule but my family says you have to have cake for your birthday to and they like Italian cream cake and said they had no idea that I don’t like it so that is how they picked. In reality they know but they love Italian cream cake and they know my fave is creme brule so it worked out for all 🙂 I just love them.
shoot, I guess dessert is with two “s”s, oopsie.
Most little children – at some time – would LOVE a little puppy or kitten for Christmas…It was made very obvious to my Gorgeous hubby and me when our oldest daughter, Jessica was pulling her favourite stuffed dog around the back yard by a lead (ribbon)!! We now have 2 lovely Golden Retrievers that both daughters love….Here’s hoping I am able to add to my Heather Bailey stash – A parcel just arrived in the mail and I can’t wait to start my Penelope Turtle…
Love the new line! Adorable!
One night after a particularly long and hectic day of work my kids wanted to finish decorating the tree. I had only managed to get the lights on the night before and after hauling in all the boxes I was too pooped to continue. My kids, 6 and 7, said not to worry they would take of it. Eventhough only the front lower half got done it was absolutely adorable.
Love the new collection. Just getting ready for the holidays.
My son’s coach called me out of the blue yesterday to tell me how much she appreciated my son. A friend of mine died unexpectedly on Monday. My friend’s twin sons showed up for practice and none of the other kids knew what to say or do. Apparently my 15-year old son went straight to both boys and gave them each a big hug and told them how sorry he was. After seeing that, the other kids followed his lead. The coach just wanted me to know how much his actions meant to everyone. I could barely express how much her call meant to me. =)
Hi Heather all the way from sunny Melbourne, Australia! Love your new fabrics. It’s funny reading all the comments about being snowed in for Christmas. Melbourne is renowned for its changeable weather. Last Christmas parts of our state had a white Christmas & then within weeks we sweltered through weeks of 46 degrees, (I think that’s 115 your scale?), & devastating bush fires.
God was so good through it all; it was a blessing to see our community pull together & help each other. Have a blessed Christmas!
I have to wipe the drool off my keyboard, these fabrics are gorgeous! You have outdone yourself again. I just baked 6 dozen cookies for soldiers down range, wish I could do more for them. More wishes from Germany and have avery merry!!
Your fabric is beautiful! I can’t wait to buy it!
Here’s my story: My sister and I didn’t get along growing up. Now that we are older, we are much better. About three days after returning home from the hospital with my first born son, she brought me and my husband a homemade spagetti dinner. She knew we were losing our minds and were so exhausted. I cried when she brought us the food! She even held our son so we could eat. I love my sister very much.
My sweetheart was kind enough to bring me chocolate last night…heaven knows I need it! 😉
Something fun… well for me, fun was waking up this morning to find two little fur babies who had somehow managed to sneaky their 70lb bottoms into the bed without me noticing. I love it when dogs sleep halfway under the covers like people- thank goodness for king sized beds!
Heather, will you read every comment? Even in french? So here it is: magnifique collection comme toujours et mon plus beau cadeau serait de la trouver enfin chez moi, en France, près de Poitiers.
So there.
How about a smile? My daughter told my son at dinner the other night that the other name for Santa Claus is “Johnny Old Saint Nicholas”. Enjoy your hot chocolate — would love to see more of the projects you’re doing with the girls from church. I’m serving at our church’s Madrigal Feast this weekend(6 course Renissance dinner with music of the time and a magician)–so much fun to be involved. Wassail!
I’ll choose something kind …
My daughter is a polichinelle in The Nutcracker this year. It’s been quite a big deal for her, and we’ve been looking forward to it for several weeks now. This weekend is ‘the big push,’ with four performances in as many days. BUT Mama came down with a stomach flu the night before the first performance!! Yuck for me, and sooo disappointing for her 🙁 I can’t believe I’m missing all of this!!!!
Two of my very sweet friends (whose daughters are also in the production) have really stepped up and made special accommodations with their own families to help. They’ve not only been making sure that she gets there on time, but they’ve also been doing her hair and make-up, which takes no small amount of time.
God bless sweet friends!!
Miracles happen.Carma happens. And the resurrection of cameras happens! Here’s the little story. The moral of the story is, when we give, we do get back in return, and miracles do happen.
So I volunteered to help out decorating downtown windows in some abandoned buildings. They were themed with our church’s next 4 Christmas sermons.”Miracle on 7th AVenue” has been the theme. I took my ideas and my beloved camera to chronical the event. Afterwards it was POURING terrential rain like only Tampa Florida can do, and evidently my camera which was in my paint box, got soaked. Guess i went through one too many knee deep puddles. Got home, felt sad. Lost all pic’s of the event, not to mention family Christmas photos. Great. I do something nice, and this happens. Ever feel like that? So I go to church the next day, and Paul (he doesn’t like to be called “Pastor”) encourages us to pick an ornament off the tree for an underpriviledged kid. What do I pick? Of all things a 12 yr. old girl needs a camera. Great. So do i. I’m a single mom, strugling as it is, and now i have to go buy a camera when i need one, and mine got ruined while doing something good. So what do i do? Give it to God. Had my little pity party with Him. He laughed. Then I was ok. Felt joy. Felt like going and buying the best camera for that kid that I could find. Maybe even make a nice camera case out of some extra fabric I had. Include some batteries. Now i was JOYFUL again. My camera purchase would wait. I have more than i need now.
THEN IT HAPPENED. i THINK. hMM.I’m gonna say my last goodbye’s to that water logged camera. I turn it on. IT ACTUALLY GOES ON AND THE PICTURE IS FINE!!! my camera was resurrected. That’s all i have to say. wow. So be joyful in all things. and believe in miracles for all things.Merry Christmas, and whatever holiday you rejoice in.
What an amazing world we live in. On a recent boating trip, my husband and I spotted a dozen manatees just floating around, enjoying the sun. On our way home, we saw three pods of dolphins fishing in the shallows. There’s no choice but to take the time to marvel at nature’s gifts.
P.S. Please share the name/number of the dress pattern the bike model is wearing!
I love the new collection. I’m excited for the laminates. I’m expecting a new baby and I think these fabrics will make an adorable diaper bag. I just have to wait to see what I’m having to decide which palette to choose. Decisions, decisions 🙂 Thanks for such a great giveaway!
What gorgeous prints, and I am so happy about the solids! Yay! As for the nicey thing someone has done for me…my 4-year-old son just told me I was his “Best friend in the whole world,” and told me he wanted to kiss me on my “cheep,” which he did, most messily.
A blessed Christmas to you, Heather.
Well, I have been having a bad week at work (deadline in a week, blue screen of death on my work PC) and it was wearing on my horribly. Last night I was grumbly at home trying to get things done, and my husband surprised me by putting on the Muppets & John Denver Christmas CD to cheer me up, and it did (of course!). No one can withstand Miss Piggy in the 12 Days of Christmas… ba-dum-dum-bump!
One of the best Christmas presents I ever received was an early one…my daughter Ellie who was due Christmas Eve, was born December 15th. In time for both of us to be home to celebrate her first Christmas. My second favorite had to be my first Bernina sewing machine given to me by my Mother-in-Law. You and your fabrics have inspired me to start sewing again. Thank you for the wonderful gift of inspiration!
I love the fabric. It makes me want to run home and sew.
My daughters are trying to one up each other by sending letters to Santa telling him how naughty their sisters are!
Happy Holidays.
Hi Heather – love the new fabrics. The model is perfect. Is she the girl you found while driving down the street? 🙂
Here’s a short ditty for you:
Very often at the dinner table (table for 4) – one of my kids will say something or do something funny. It usually makes the other kid laugh, which turns into this wide open mouthed, awful fake laugh, which makes me laugh hysterically (I have asthma, and I get into this deep belly laugh) which makes my kids laugh really hard – my husband just looks at us and He just doesn’t get it. He smiles, but just cant get into that contageous, over the top Belly laugh that me and the kids get into. It is so fun. I love it!
Thanks for the chance to win!
1st time on your site. I friend suggested it because I am trying to come up with an easy craft for the Beehive class. Lots of great ideas, I can feel my creative juices percolating. Thanks. Now for my story – My daughter Emily had been driving everyone crazy by listening to Christmas music constantly (it was September). She started to play a song and Kate yells “Emily – NO MORE CHRISTMAS MUSIC!” Emily started to laugh and said “Somehow I don’t think Caring is Creepy is going to catch on as a Christmas song.” We all thought it was pretty funny.
I am so in love! I am trying to be on a fabric diet, but this will probably be the reason I cheat ;o)
Sweet little story… Starting when my son was 4 months old, if I said “kisses”, he would lean over and give me a giant, open-mouthed kiss. Now, at 8 months, he babbles all the time, but his 1st real word (ok, two words) was “wub-wub”, or “love you”, and it’s always followed by happy, slobbery smooches!
I sure do love being his mommy!
I’m a Utah born and bread girl now living on the Oregon coast! My husband’s family owns a holly berry farm and distribute holiday decor all over the US. You can imagine my surprise when I saw your cute Holly Pins! I think I’ve found my next holiday craft! And I am certain they will fit in like a charm:)
I just love your collection – they are beautiful and can’t wait to get my hands on some and make things for grandchildren (teenies).
My story – on Martin Lurther King Day one granddaughter and I were talking about him and what he did and I said “I cooked dinner for MLK once.” My Granddaughter looked at me aghast and said “Gram, everyone knows you are a good cook, you don’t have to lie!”. She didn’t believe me until she asked her dad and he told her it was true.
Lovely new collection! I’m imagining picnic sets from laminate, with little cotton napkins 🙂 And dresses, lots of dresses!
I spent today listening to Christmas with the Rat Pack, packing for a move and watching TCM while snow fell… If only I had a big mug of cocoa, it would have been perfect!
I love the look of your new fabric. I just need to find time that I’d be able to do something with it! Something weird for you, and maybe it is just me, but a little funny, too. Over the summer, my youngest daughter, age two, was having a rough day and had spent some time in the time-out chair. Later that day, she was having a snack and it put her in the happiest mood. While eating, she turned to me and said, “You’re the best mommy ever. But don’t forget, you’re also the meanest mommy ever.” I’m not sure why, but it really made me howl with laugher. I know it was one of those “had to be there” moments, but it was really funny! She still will say this to me and it still makes me smile! Thanks for letting us share with you.
Your fabric is so beautiful. What a lucky woman, to live with these images in your head! The week before Thanksgiving, I got sick with swine flu. Our family had travel plans, which promptly got cancelled. We had no Thanksgiving lunch to look forward to! My non-cooking husband decided to step up and cook a turkey. The day before Thanksgiving, I was diagnosed with pneumonia – it was awful. My husband split the day between watching the kids, nursing me, and cooking an entire Thanksgiving feast! He made everything from scratch, dressing to desert. It was fabulous!
I love your fabrics. I am going to redo a bedroom and I think turquoise, browns and golds or pinks from your collection is just what I need.
How about a childhood Christmas memory. Every year we would go upstairs when it was time for Santa to come and every year we would see the same bright red light in the sky over by the hills, hence Ruddy’s nose. We would get so excited. It took many years before we figured out it was a tower with a red light for airplanes. I miss being a kid and believing in all those wonderful memories. Now I enjoy the memories I make with my own children. Happy Holidays.
… BTW, your bike rocks! (Please exclude this comment from the competition as I’ve already submitted an entry :O)
A friend invited us over for shrimp and grits tonight. She had to work today and non of the rest of us did. What a great friend and a great dinner.
Hi Heather, Thanks for the opportunity to enter this give-away. Eight days ago I broke my ankle while visiting my daughter in another state. My husband had to fly there to drive me the 12.5 hours home. My foot is still not casted yet, and I can do very little except surf all the gorgeous fabrics arriving in the Internet stores right now… and dream of the many projects I want to sew! I respect you so much for teaching/mentoring the young girls at your church!!! They are our diamonds in the rough. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Blessings, Layne
I’m so glad this is a random drawing and not an essay contest! The brain is not working!
Ok, Heather. Here is the most random question I have ever been asked. When my triplets were little, I had three wee ones, a two year old, and a five year old. When I’d go out with all the girls people looked at me like I’d just escaped from the circus side show. They would also forget what the social norm was for questions and comments. One day I was out and about…three babies in a double stroller, one two-year-old in the pack on my back, and a five-year-old following close behind with her hand in my back pocket…a perfect stranger stopped me and asked if my babies were triplets. Yes. Nothing unusual there. She turned her head, looked at me and asked in all seriousness, “Do the babies all have the same father?” I was speechless. This question was wrong on so many levels. But it still cracks me up eleven years later.
i love this fabric and enjoyed the video. wonder what the music is? i loved it too!
i used to swing dance twice a week when i was living in vancouver, b.c. ~ it’s my favorite dance! i even learned the lindy hop! my partner and i used to dress up in the appropriate vintage clothes and dance the night away.
this fabric certainly fits that era. i love it!
I am so excited!!! Today my little girls American Girl doll showed up. I made a little apron and chef hat for her and a matching one for her doll, I can’t wait to get your fabric in my store so I can make more. I was giggling over it the whole time. I had to call her when grandma picked her up from school, as grandma answerd the phone I could hear her in the back giggling about a letter she had gotten back from Santa today at school. I love her teacher, she is the best….. now that I have talked your ear off… he he I better get back to work.
My story is something sweet that my 2 1/2 year old son did today. He saw today that I had a band-aide on my finger from cutting it the other day. He asked what happened and asked if he could kiss it better. I let him and he kissed it three times and then said, “all better” and gave me a hug and kiss on the cheek. It was just what this tired and overly stressed mother needed to melt my heart.
Whoooo hooo! A giveaway! I am currently whipping up nursery decor for my first baby who arrives in March. I’m using the Pop Garden fabric and it’s looking fabulous.
I love the new line, and I’d love a chance to get my hands on some!
sounds boring but my mom helped can sauerkraut- a family tradition but alot of work- and actually great memories
I am a stay at home mama and right now I am secretly making and selling mustache mugs so I can totally surprise my husband with a birthday and Christmas present that (for once) wasn’t paid for by him 🙂 I am super excited to see what he thinks- but it is a little tricky to hide everything from him! We also just moved into a new house (he is in the army, so we do this a lot) but this time we bought a house and we are painting it. I have been ecstatic to finally be able to purchase some of your fabric for new curtains and pillows!!!!
Beautiful fabric, as always… Last night a group from my church went to the local Ronald McDonald house to host a little Christmas-y party we call “Comfort & Joy” (whenever you design a holiday fabric, that’d be a nice name for the line…)
Anyhow, we took dozens of desserts and served hot chocolate and coffee drinks. Played live music, listened to the residents’ stories, and whoever wanted to could do a little craft – making pocket scarves out of pre-cut lengths of fleece and sewing big beautiful buttons on. By the end of the evening, some of the parents were adapting the fleece lengths to become sweet little stockings for their hospitalized kids.
As you probably know, Ronald McDonald House is a charity providing living space for the families of seriously ill children while their kids are in the hospital. Our childrens’ hospital is a destination for certain illnesses from all over the state and region, so lots of families far from home at this holiday time. We wanted to bring them a little comfort and joy (and I think we did).
Hi Heather!
Nicey Jane is so, so gorgeous. I just watched your video with my daughter, Olivia, who will be two in February, and she was just bopping her little head along to the music, smiling, and saying, “Fabric!, Fabric!” over and over. The girl already is a fabriholic, just like her momma. 🙂 I already share my love of handmade with her and am looking forward to many years of crafting with her as she gets older. Most importantly, I can‘t wait to teach her the art of sewing, so that she can one day do the same with her children. Thank you, not only for helping keep this art alive, but for also making it exciting and fresh with all of your fabulous designs.
Best wishes,
Heather
Hi Heather. Beautiful new line and I have to admit I’m a wee bit bias to the perfect naming of such a gorgeous line! As for nicey things that people do for this Jane – there are so many!
With a husband in the Air Force, a child with special needs, and two teenagers – I’ve learned to truly not sweat the small stuff and always find the silver lining. My day is always made by that person who waits and lets MY car make the turn first, or the person who holds the door even though it could be another minute before my child and I get there, or the parent who offers to bring my daughter home from practice because they know it helps me out even if it’s not on their way home! Nice people are out there everywhere – pay it forward folks – life is one special thing and we’re so lucky to have it!
Beautiful fabric! Hmmm…well, my husband just made me a latte, which I think is kind…but I have also recently learned that moose meat tastes nothing like beef because I live in Alaska, so you discover these things!
Yesterday, my almost-three-year-old daughter broke off a chunk of purple play-doh, handed it to me, and said, “Mama, I shared.” Best moment of my day!
my Mom is constantly bestowing kindness on me and the rest of the family. her latest deed is making a beautiful vintage-looking green dress for my daughter’s american doll. too cute!
While helping friends volunteering by collecting cans of food, I was amazed at the generousity and kind words from so many. At one house though, the woman yelled at me, said she was the new poor, chastised me for volunteering, etc. So not cool! I told my volunteering partner about this, and in spite of me telling him not to, he purchased a grocery store gift card for this woman. We returned to her house later that day, and I realized that while he was giving her the gift of groceries, he gave me the gift of Christmas. Although I protested going back because she was so mean, after she realized what we were doing, the tears came, she said she felt so bad for yelling at me earlier, then her and her husband of 38 years shared how hard this year has been on them and they were scared they were going to lose their home. Tears, hugs, and a renewed spirit. I think about that day every day since.
Before I retired teachers would work 12 hour conference days so parents who worked strange hours would have lots of opportunity to talk with their children’s teachers. My husband used to bring me a hot plate of food from home during our dinner break. I think that was a pretty nice thing to do!
Love your new range – may become my favourite!! I’d like to tell you a Christmas story about my favourite Christmas present – I needed some gumboots to work in the garden and that is exactly what I got from my husband – except they were old, used, smelly and had cobwebs inside them! Errg! I tried to be as thankful as I could – then he gave a huge grin and send me on a treasure hunt (with clues) all over the house, only to discover a very lovely jewellery box as my ‘real’ present! Didn’t get the needed gumboots, but who cares – I had so much fun playing!
I love this collection! Your bike rocks. I’ve been looking for a cool bike for a long time. How does it ride? What type is it? And I love the pink. Now I’m off to put on some sweat pants and give the kids a bath then popcorn and a movie. Thanks for the great giveaway.
beautiful fabrics
As always with your fabrics, this is lovely. I just finished a little jumper for my three-year-old daughter, which she calls her “bouncer.” I am dying to make another one with these fabrics!
Heather-I absolutely LOVE, love this Nicey Jane line of fabric…dress patterns/skirt patterns please, I want to wear it, I’ve seen 2 dresses with it in promo, but have you made any patterns, would love to buy them. I’ve been a baking machine this last week, today’s batch was a delicious nutmeg log cookie…it came out sooooo good, I adjusted the recipe a little bit and it’s great. I love to bake and will make up trays of cookies to give away, I’ll be posting pics christmas eve on my blog. This line of fabric reminds me of lazy hazy crazy days of summer and boy do I want them back, live on the outskirts of Buffalo, NY an baby it’s cold here! SO I just gaze over at the fabric and think dream of the beautiful flowers and warm weather. I think my Christmas wish is a winter vacation somewhere warm wearing some nicey jane.
First…I am SOO excited to get my sewing hands on that fabric : ) Yay!! I showed my fiance last night and all he said was, “Uh oh…” lol.
Something nice that someone has done for me lately?
I am a nanny for 4 children on top of starting up my online boutique. I am in a nanny share situation(I work for 2 families). My fiance and I are young, 21 & 23 and have been trying hard to get him back into school AND save for our wedding. It’s been stressing me out so much trying to save money on top of paying for regular bills (my nanny moms know this) Sooooo….yesterday for a “Christmas Bonus” they gave me all the money I need to pay for my fiances winter semester to get him back into school again…*sighs* I was crying and couldn’t stop hugging them. I couldn’t belive that they took that weight off of our shoulders. It was amazing and I am so thankful and gracious. Wow… Still can’t believe it.
Little more than a year ago, I started having the itch to turn my obsession with color & pattern, love of fabrics, and need to CREATE into something real, something for myself, something a little more than “just” raising my kids. People in my life were doubtful that it would work, afraid it would take too much away from the family, and so forth. My mom, however, bought me the book Crafting a Business, and told me to go for it! My business is still quite small, compared to all the amazing artists out there, and it’s evolving as I find my groove, but it’s extremely satisfying to me. Mom continues to be my biggest cheerleader and the first person I tell all my new ideas and little successes.
Such beautiful fabrics Heather. I must get some and make a few purses. Yesterday I finished raking up the rest of the leaves, and I was getting it all done by myself. But then the strangest thing happened. My teenager came out to help. All on her own. You could have knocked me over with a crunchy leaf. xo, suzy
Maybe this is interesting to you….I have 7 kids, been married 21 yrs to the boy I met in the 9th grade, have ground my own wheat for yrs, I am a cottage gardener and have grown every vegetable and herb, have made 120 + quilts, and homeschooled all my kids until this past Sept. when we joined forces to help a new school starting; I teach art and science there, so the 5 still in school are with me still everyday….you could say that I am about as domestic as a woman can get…but in the past 3 yrs I have gotten 3 tattoos. One on my back with my husband and my name surrounding a vintage rose, a butterfly on my right ankle and my latest piece is a vine I drew out myself that starts on the top of my left foot and travels past my ankle up the side of my calf w/curlicues and 7 hearts to stand for them. It has blown my kids’ minds, 5 girls and 2 boys, aged 20-7, and they now think that I will be covered one day with this type of body art…They were not impressed they voiced to me loudly and they tell me that I need to stop, but secretly I found out that they tell their friends that they have one very cool and hot Mom. ~anna in md, right near my hometown of DC at http://www.bohemiancotton.blogspot.com/
Eek!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this new collection of fabric! I just started sewing again & these prints make me feel all sparkley inside! Great job! 🙂
I made a quilt for my 3 year old nieces birthday this weekend. To my surprise, when all of the toys, books and other gifts were opened, she only wanted to play with the quilt. She and her 2 male cousins grabbed 3 pillows and pretended that it was nap time.
Did you know that one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s first memories is of being carried outside and placed on a handmade patchwork quilt? This was during the first spring of her life, so she must have been a wee babe. Apparently, she remembered the quilt’s patterns of flowers and tiny red stars.
After days of forecasted snow, we finally got snow today. My 3 year old son came up to me a said, “Mom! It’s totally snowing!”. For being such a stinker, he can sure be cute :).
OH, and I LOVE the new fabrics!
Happy holidays, Heather! 🙂
Since it’s Christmas time, how about I tell you about something “nice” someone’s done in my life? My Grandfather passed away this summer after a long, sad battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Soon after, my mother… a long-time, savy sewing gal… took my Grandfather’s dress shirts and went to work with her scissors and machine. The result was a pieced quilt that, at every glance, calls to mind my Grandfather Jack and the warm, kind, giving life he led and legacy he left behind. Simply seeing those pieces of him is like two gifts rolled into one!
Wishing you and yours many nice, comfy things this winter….
I love the fabric…I must purchase some and make a spring quilt to get me through winter! My name is Jane and of course the fabric line “Nicey Jane” caught my attention. One day I want to start a blog and feature all thing things “Jane”.
Tonight we attended Handel’s Messiah with a unique twist: brief sketches (acting) of Handel’s life were interspersed taken from the timeframe of when he wrote the Messiah. It was a great way to introduce my son to the man and his famous work.
Friends and I enjoyed an Eucumenical Christmas Concert last night. It was wonderful and the music touched my heart. ;~)
Love your nicey Jamie fabric line. It’s beautiful.
Jane
I actually met my finace while learning the Lindy Hop. We were partnered and on our second lesson he stepped on my foot and brike my big toe! Our first date was to the ER while my toe swelled to epic black and blue proportions. How romantic!
Really enjoy the new line. Need to up my fabric budget so I can enjoy it more. I am from Pittsburgh. Did you know that Pittsburgh has 455 bridges? Yup, it even has 8 more then Venice Italy. Just thought you might want to know.
Hm…something funny: When I was 8, I went to a museum with my parents and (being precocious) pretended that I couldn’t see the number in that dot test to see if you are color blind….I am now 36 and I have never been able to own up to this fib…my parents still are convinced that I can’t see the color red. My husband tease me constantly but I just can’t seem to own up after all of these years!
Can’t wait for the laminates!!
When I was in college, I was sick with pneumonia during the Winter Break and couldn’t drive down to my family’s house. They surprised me by driving up and spending it nursing me (and cooking.) Even my aunt flew out from Colorado to visit me. It was the sweetest thing ever.
Hmmm, is it too late? Anyway, love the bicycle- mine is yellow- with the basket too!
Hello Heather, another Gorgeous collection! I LOVE the Khaki, yellow and blue combinations althugh my 2 small daughters will more typically be clamoring for the pinks and oranges! Two year old Beatrice did something truely lovely today; wrapped me up on the sofa with a knitted blanket and presented me with bottomless ‘imaginary’ tea and sugary pink wooden cake – maybe I looked as though I needed it….?
My girls made Christmas cards in Girl Scouts for the local senior center. Merry Christmas!!!
We really like this joke around our house:
Did you hear the Pilsbery Dough Boy died?
He died of a yeast infection.
I’m hoping this is still on since I don’t see any winners yet, but you should enjoy the short story nonetheless:
My 4-year-old little girl, while taking a bath today and ruminating about the random things she ruminates about, was SHOCKED when we corrected her and told her that no, jelly does not come from jellyfish!
I invited the church teens to my house and fed them kasagna and beef stew~! they have quite the appetite!
We have a rescued pet rat that was put in cages with two snakes, and neither snake would eat him. We now call him wheezer the amazing snake charming rat.
It’s a tough December this year in our home…but you know what? Your beautiful fabric, colors and joy just make it all that much better! Thanks for bringing a bit of sunshine into our home.
p.s. I ordered and used your delish felt for my ornament swap at Silver Bella this year and they were so pretty! The colors were just yummy!
Hmmm…my friends and family have done sweet things for me all my life, so I’ll just stick with the most recent. Last night, I had to work late and didn’t get home until almost 8pm. Of course, it was cold and pouring down rain and it was one of those days where you forget your umbrella. I walked into our little apartment to find that my husband had cooked us a nice steak dinner and rented us a movie to watch as well. I am so blessed!
When I was in Junior High we had a morning assembly every morning via central radio. It was usually held by a teacher or an unfortunate pupil. Well, on the morning of my birthday I (along with many other pupils, I’m sure) was shocked to hear that the topic of the assembly was me!
Two of my good friends had asked permission to hold the assembly as a birthday gift to me. I don’t remember anything they said but it lasted for several minutes. Then they played my favorite song of the time. It was kinda humiliating but kinda awesome!
I still think that’s the most unique birthday present I’ve ever received.
Gasp–those dresses!!! They are wonderful and perfect for your new fabrics! I’m especially in love with the peter pan collard button front one–are you selling the pattern??
I LOVE your fabric! Anyway, we live by a tiny lake and a boy, to earn his eagle badge, has cleared out all of the troublesome blackberries, is making a new path (one that isn’t in our yard, yay!) and putting in all sorts of native plants to make the area happier. It’s such a huge task, and such a nice thing to do.
all I can say is a music video set to images of fabric is amazing for an obssesive fabric lover like me! Adorable!!
A friend of mine was a missionary in South Africa. One day, he was teaching a primary class at church. My friend asked the question, “What is furry and brown with a long tail and likes to eat nuts?” One of the children raised his hand and said, “I know the answer is Jesus Christ, but it sure sounds like a squirrel.”
Kids are too cute!
Nicey Jane is my favorite collection of yours so far! By the way, what patterns did you use for the dresses or did you design them yourself? They are too cute!
The story about your son reminded me of my own science class story. My dad was the science teacher at my high school. I took a couple of classes from him and have some good memories. One of my best memories: One afternoon I walked into my dad’s room in between classes, went to his refrigerator, and proceeded to polish off a bit of apple juice straight out of the jug. My dad came in and said, “Karla! Don’t drink that!” I thought he was just upset that I didn’t ask if I could have it, so I swallowed the last bit. After doing so, he exclaimed that there had been about 10 mold samples in that apple juice. UGH! Luckily I didn’t get sick, but I still didn’t feel well after knowing I had just downed someone’s extra credit!
Our quilt group got together last night for our annual Christmas party gift exchange. We draw names and work on one big gift and then get small items for all members. That way we have a full year to decide on that one special gift. Looking at your newest collection I am getting inspired and anxious to make something really spectacular for my special someone…..but first I will have to practice on something for myself…….Last year it was an apron set made with your Pineapple Brocade which ended up under my tree….oooppppsss….too pretty to give away.
Nicey Jane is gorgeous, I can’t wait to get my hands on some! Merry Christmas!!
We’ve had a rough few months with our daughter being in the hospital, and a few of my fellow crafty moms have banded together and managed to pick me up with gifts and words of encouragement! Some days I’m not sure what I would’ve done without that support!
I have to say, I have adored EVERY line you have put out ( I still have a stash of Fresh Cut squares I need to figure out what to do with…I just CAN’T decide!) and I’m dying to get my paws on this one too!
I suppose my favorite is when my 3 year old hands me a stack of teeny tiny pieces of paper that she cut up and tells me its a quilt! She then tells me who it needs to go to. It never fails to make me smile….oooh and I am salivating over the thought of your fabrics in laminate. I am totally thinking how cute it will be to make a reusable lunch bag!
Today while I was hanging out with a few friends, two of them asked me if I could teach them how to sew. One wants to make new pillows for her couch, and another wants to make curtains. I was thrilled that they like what I’ve done in my house enough to trust me with their own homes! Lovely giveaway!
Love the video – what fun!
My favorite story right now is of my son and his cousin at Thanksgiving time. We had finished dinner and were all lazying around talking. Andrew (age 3) and Calvin (age 5) somehow found their way onto the kitchen island overflowing with leftovers. When I found them, my great-grandma-inspired berry jello with whipped cream (hello yummy tradition!) was long gone. They were licking the big ol’ dishing up spoons. Calvin looked at me and said, “We were pretending it was vegetable soup”.
Hee, hee – okay then, carry on. 🙂 I hope you enjoy lots of “vegetable soup” these holidays. 🙂
Ohhh! The new fabrics are beautiful!
O.K. Something nice?
Well, I have 2 year old twin girls and a one year old son. So, not much time for holiday baking…you know, when I am up half the night sewing! My sweet, newly-married sister brought over a huge chunk of sugar cookie dough for my little girls and I to make sugar cookies! She made it after she got home from scrubbing my kitchen floors on her hands and knees. I’m spoiled, I know!
It’s probably too late to comment for the giveaway, but I just wanna leave a comment anyway.
Plus you said you read them all and I want to express how beautiful and amazing your line is! And wow, the song on the video was such a perfect pairing for your fabric line and the whole concept that you described. I want to find that song and play it over and over…it’s too fun!
I also have a story of kindness to share…it may seem small, but it meant a lot to me. I had an order of supplies on Etsy that I purchased 2 months ago and never got to me. Both myself and the seller check with our post offices and had no luck. Well I asked her if she could just give me a partial refund or discount and she said she would ship everything to me again, free of charge! I thought that was very generous of her.
I also wanted to tell you that these fabrics really make me want to make a cute patchwork spring skirt, as well as a (small) quilt. I’ve never made either, so it would be definitely be a challenge for me. Thank you for sharing such beautiful fabric with the world…can’t wait to buy some from this line!
Happy Holidays!
Lindsay
I love the two dresses you made with your fabric! Would you be willing to share your pattern source? I’ve been scouring the internet trying to find a similar one with no success. I own a yellow vintage inspired bicycle similar to yours and have a great photo op in mind for this summer!
I skimming my favorite blogs when I saw this massive pop of color on “One Among Sisters”
It was about this gorgeous fabric that I just had to learn more about! And, I reach your blog and it is so gorgeous and even more delightfully colorful 🙂
I love this line, and your all around work is amazing 🙂
I love Nicey Jane so much! I can’t wait to buy some this weekend. Did the giveaway end already?
I don’t have children but I have been fortunate to have had many wonderful pets pass through my life. Currently there is Piper, a mixed breed rescue dog who looks like a yellow lab. She is the most gentle, sensitive and tenderhearted animal I have ever known. And there is Gracie aka “Grey Kitty” she has the softest fur, like a rabbit except I think it’s softer. Gracie tries to play it off like the typical aloof cat but you turn around and there she is curled up near, but just out of arms reach.
I heart Nicey Jane!!!! One of the sweetest thing done for me recently was by a couple of friends who on finding out that I was pregnant, immediately brought me to the shops and bought bub a couple of onesies! I love their kind gesture and how one of the onesies proclaim ” I’m New Here!” We can’t wait to meet bub! I’m sure you know the excitement and I’m sure putting together a collection is just like the process of birthing all over again!
Loving your new patterns! Woohoo!
I know I am too late for the giveaway, but I love your video. Who is your model? She’s gorgeous! Were those ‘bike’ shots taken by you? They are so nice! Downtown Gilbert? Nice spot!
You are SO TALENTED!!!
Your patterns are beautiful, as always. Just been on such a creating kick lately and these are getting the ideas flowing. Lovely.
OH, i love your new collection! I am having my sixth baby in February (yes 6th!). We have four girls and a boy right now. My husband and I found out we are having another girl! I do love pink but we have been struggling to figure out a way to tell our son that he will now have five sisters! We know he will love her and be a good brother just like he is with his other four. But, it is a little bittersweet to tell him he’s not getting his brother. Anyway, I found a quilt pattern on etsy that I just have to make for our new little one. I want to use this fabric you have created! I think we will have to tell our son officially SOON, so that I can make this pink quilt out ‘in the open’. oh, sister, it’s hard to break a boy’s heart!…..
ooh, me likey nicey jane. i sew with a circle of friends and sometimes sew with some of them one on one. because i am poor, they have been SEW good to me. they EACH got me my favorite gingerbread coffee creamer a few days apart so i could have it in my coffee at their house. AND then was allowed to take it home with me. what a coincidence that they BOTH so kindly thought to do that for me. i was SEW excited! tonight i sit here at one of the aforementioned friend’s house dog sitting/house sitting because they had to fly to tennesse for a family emergency. it’s what friends do. i am SEW lucky to have them in my life. happy holidays heather!
I received a Nicey Jane Jolly Pack in a Secret Santa gift exchange and the fabrics are beautiful! So I’m scouting for coordinates and ideas for what to make. First time visitor to your blog, too.
Something funny that happened to me…(To set the scene I am a middle-aged female probably best described as frumpy – no tattoos or even pierced ears.) At the library today I chose a book titled Innovative Piecing. The young man working at the check out desk seems to hate his job as I’ve never seen him smile. When I handed my books to him he got a startled look on his face then chuckled while saying, “I thought that said Innovative PieRcing”! I replied, “Sounds like a title from the banned book list!”
I love the fabrics! Can you share with us the dress pattern from the picture with the bike…love it!
I love the dresses shown in this post— where can I find a pattern? They look absolutely perfect in this fabric. I’ve gotta have one!
Love the new collection! Too many people do awesome things for us all the time! Most recently my husband got up early and took the littles (my two toddlers) out to buy donuts and coffee so I could sleep in! Lovely!
Love your new fabrics! Your blog is a refreshing mini-escape for me. My business keeps me busy, along with my two kids. However, when I need a small vacation from my usual day, I read your blog. One side of my brain takes over for the other side, and I get inspired to create something new when I close the office doors at the end of the day.
Recently my friend Carol sent me a mini quilt just out of the blue because she knew it would bring me joy. Isn’t that nice??
Hi Heather – fantastic fabrics. as always.
did you design the dresses above or are they a commerically available pattern? they are adorable!
There are so many kind and helpful people out there!!
I started a pyjama label with a friend when I was twelve ( I am now 14).
We have sold hundreds of pairs of pj’s, been featured in local and national media, and have several stockists, with new outlets in the pipeline. None of this would have been possible without the immense support from others around me; my parents, for putting up with the seemingly endless amount of fabric which seems to be taking over our house, my cousin, for building me a fantastic website, and mentoring us the entire way. Photographers, for styling wonderful shoots, at a heavily discounted rate, aswell as screenprinters, shop owners, fabric + supply wholesalers and so much more!!
It is completely amazing what other people give,
and a truly humbling experience as well.
Great great designs. 🙂 I’m so excited to make a set of yo yo’s today – and adorn them with shimmery seed beads for a friend to wear on a bright fuchsia scarf of hers. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love the new fabric line!
The nicest thing someone has done for me recently is by my husband. I was laid off this spring and decided to go back to college. Since money has been tight I have been disouraged about continuing on with school and have been thinking that I should just find any job to start making money again. But my super supportive husband started donating plamsa at a local blood bank for cash so I can stay in school…now that’s love!
Oh my goodness I am so new to quilting (and therefore stashing) and have only recently managed to get my hands on the entire fat quarter collection of Freshcut, Pop Garden and Bijoux all I which I love. But these new fabrics are so delicious I will have to get them all too. I love how your designs appear vintage but modern at the same time. They make ones heart sing! Thanks for the cute video.
Ummm.. Something weird. I live in a high desert region of Oregon, where we have tons of sagebrush (aka tumbleweeds). They really do go rolling across the road like in a bad western. Sometimes I’ll look out my window at home and one will be rolling down the sidewalk. So cliche. The best, though, is when you hit a big one with your car and it gets stuck in the grill and you get to wait to see how long before it comes off by itself.
after pitching an embarrassing tantrum about the holidays (i overdid the whole handmade christmas thing and neglected the rampant dust bunny population), my dear husband cooked and cleaned ALL day yesterday. i’m so embarrassed but so grateful for this man!
Oh I am so in love with your gorgeous new line…and as an added bonus some are coming out laminated?!? squeee! I have been hunting for a nice laminate to use for our *art table* in the sewing room…dare I dream my hunt is nearly over?!? Yay! And merry Christmas!
One time my boyfriend wrapped up a huge box and filled it with balloons. There was a little present down on the bottom once I opened it up and all the balloons floated out!
In addition to thinking your fabrics are gorgeous… I too am interested in the dress patterns. Are they your own creations? Or are they patterns which are already available? I really love the one with the yellow buttons and piping.
I guess this is still open? Anyway, I have finished all the “have-to’s” and decided the past few days to just let myself try something new. I made a very bright crumb quilt with a lot of white in it—-and—-I really like it. I have been a very traditional quilter in many ways, but it is always healthy to try something new.
Super cute.
I have truely been blessed with some
amazing friends.
I love them all, and thank my Heavenly Father
for them.
Last year, no one remembered to get good ol’ Mom (me) a Christmas gift! So this year, my daughter and my hubby went shopping together and came home with armloads of gifts for me. As a “taste of the fabulousness to come”, they insisted that I open one specific gift, which turned out to be a purple faux-suede shoulder bag. Ummmmmm. They were both giggling like mad while my daughter expounded on the chic-ness of this purse. I didn’t know whether to laugh at a gag gift or thank them for a thoughtful, but misguided, guesture! I mean, purple fake suede just is NOT me! I can hardly wait the few remaining days til Christmas to see whether I’ll be standing in the “returns” line with armloads of purple hideousness, or showing off a stunning new wardrobe LOL!
beautiful, dreamy fabric. this year my 12 year old who still believes in Santa found a gift tag in the pile of unused gift tags that had her name and from santa…she may have found me out…i think she’s just playing along with me now about the whole santa deal…merry christmas
Love the video! great job. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of that laminated fabric- I’m thinking rain jackets…
Wow, I just wanted to say that I just “discovered” you and I LOVE the new fabrics! I can’t wait to show this to my little sister so we can plan some adorable projects in the new year. I think it’s time to redo my kitchen/dining in Heather Bailey fabrics!
Heather, I love the fabric. There is something nostagic but it has a little bit of a modern sassy attitude. I love it. Please, please, please make patterns of the wonderful dresses made with the nicey jane fabric here on your blog. I can’t believe how absolutely fabulous they are. I can relate to them because I used to make some just like that when I was a teenager. Oh how I would love to make some for my daughters and granddaughters before I am too old to sew. They are very flattering and they show off the beautiful fabric so well. JoAnne
Hi,
My husband did something wonderful for all us. He painted almost all of our apartment over the weekend. Istn’t that lovely?

i really want to buy some fabric…it has been almost two months now….i am dying inside a little each day!
am i too late? i have a shop called annie oakleaves and we did the whole shop in your colors and used your fabric for the curtains and decoupaged the shelves with your paper.i get alot of comments about it and give people your link. im so excited for this new collection,it makes me think its time to change the shop around!
My mother-in-law has been super kind to me this past week. One night this week when my wild little 3 month old was fighting sleep (actually punching me!), she said, “Sweetie, let me do it.” Whew. And it wasn’t in a condescending way. It was just that she genuinely wanted me to take a break.
I realize I’m about the 600th comment, but I just bought twenty fat-quarters of Nicey Jane and hyperventilating with excitement!! THANKS for your creativity and talent. Can’t wait to get sewing.
Love your blog too.
My lovely boyfriend does nice things for me everyday! Last night he did ALL of our dinner dishes for me while I played with my new cupcake tower and planned the pretty cupcakes I will be making. I didn’t even have to ask him to do them 🙂
Heather,
The little dress with the collar you are riding that adorable bicycle in -it one of your patterns? I love it and absolutely want one for this summer in the Nicey Jane. If it isn’t yours, would you share and if it is, are you going to publish the pattern?
Happy New Year from Georgia,
Susan
Hi Heather, can you please tell me what dress pattern that is on the girl with the bike? I’d love to make that! Lovely fabric! Thanks!
Cute dress. Nice bike. Where’d you get the AMAZING background?
She is so cute! She is giving the impression of being so cuddly.
Hi! I love the fabric AND the dresses. Where can I find the pattern for the dress the model is wearing as she hangs the wash?
Thanks!
Heather I absolutely adore this range of fabrics – the colours are energizing & delicious – I am particularly in love with the dress with the yellow buttons! Is there a pattern available for this dress?
Thanks a bunch x.
beautiful pictures and very nice written
Hi Heather! I just stumbled upon your site by looking for fabric flower designs. I love your creativity! It’s beautiful. So, where can I get the pattern for the dress that Nicey is wearing? I love it! Thanks for sharing your stuff. It’s gorgeous!
best wishes from japan!
I love your fabrics. Keep them coming.
Cute Story:
I was feeling a little under the weather, so my 4 year-old son called his father @ work and asked him to shop flowers for mommy from him.
How about something interesting… more of an ah ha moment. I have six (yes, 6) young children, the oldest is 13 and the youngest is 2 1/2. They are fun and crazy, not at all passive and quiet. (don’t know where THAT came from!). I have this disease, I’m not sure what to call it but I can describe it. When I look at something totally adorable, I tell myself, that’s SO cute! I should make some and sell them! I do this all the time… the ideas, not that I make everything I see! Needless to say, I really don’t have time for more projects. So, I finally realized that I can enjoy things that other people make, appreciate the time and energy they put in to them. I can buy one or 10 if I feel like it, and not have to worry about trying to make and sell anything more! I can make things when I want for whom I want without the pressure of making something that may or may not sell. I can just enjoy being a very busy crazy mom. I think I’ll be better for it. I can cure myself, right? heehee!
LOVE the fabrics AND trash ties! Ok – my parents worked VERY hard to let me have the experience of believing in Santa. I try to do the same for my sons now. Last year we stayed up til 3 AM wrapping presents and getting them all under the tree. As we went to the plate of cookies that were to be eaten by Santa, we found a note from our son…asking Santa for proof that reindeer exist. I scratched a note about what a good boy he had been, then ran to the coffee pot and used old coffee grinds to smear on the paper in the shape of a hoof. Bought us another year of Christmas fun!
My good friend Anne unexpectedly dropped by yesterday with a stuffed polar bear, with a grain pillow inside (the kind you heat in a microwave, to put in your bed and keep your feet warm) and a six-pack of beer. Her sweet daughter got me a ceramic teaspoon holder. They know me well- I usually prefer a warm, cozy evening at home with a polar bear to keep me warm and a beer. That’s me!
I don’t know how I missed this update before… but it is ADORABLE! I love your fabric insert in the pink basket. I have a Biria bike that I adore, but have had the worst time trying to find cute baskets and panniers to go with it. I ended up with a standard wicker basket on the front, but haven’t been able to source any cute saddle bags. I have thought of making them, but haven’t tackled that yet. I can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with!!
Hello Nicey Jane (*-*)…
I have finally found the Kissing Booth surrounded by lovely pink Church Flowers! Here’s a little wink back to you in honor of your perfectly created meadow.
You make the prettiest fabric! My weird thing is that I love collecting fabric but I don’t love to sew. :/ Thanks for the giveaway!!
That fabric is beautiful and so is the cut of the dress! Anyone know where I could find a similar pattern? I’d love to make something like it out of one of these super cute fabrics.
That dress is amazing! What pattern did you use?
Love your fabrics. Do you sell wholesale?
