Long-Spoon Days

Plasticstirrers1hb

Today, I serve you spoons.  Funky plastic ones from the 50s or 60s, I think.

When I was a girl, my parent’s silverware tray contained an average selection of spoons, forks and knives, but for one long, slender, iced-tea spoon.  When clean, that spoon was always my preference.  I didn’t find out until years later that it was my older sister’s preferred spoon as well (which explains why it was so elusive).

Last year, I bought Julia an antique, silver iced-tea spoon for her birthday (I think it was her birthday) and some months later I found these ones for me.  Much more Heathery.  Of course, they’re not a comfortable shape for cereal, soup, ice cream or anything else. (They’re meant for stirring, I think.)  So, I just look at them.  And Charlotte plays with them.  They remind me of long-spoon days long-gone.

  1. Scooping out every last inch of an ice-cream sundae, scraping the icing off the cake long after any interest in eating the cake had gone, walking home on a Saturday afternoon with my 50 cent bag of mixed lollies from the corner store. God, being a kid could be so great. Love this photo.

  2. Love this and all of your pics, your blog is such a cheery colorful place to visit. These spoons are great and look very familiar to me for some reason, but i just can’t place it…oh well. I read a brief metion on your flower post about ’24’…can’t wait for Season 6 can you??? 🙂

  3. Hi Heather,
I found your blog more or less by accident and I´m very impressed. What an amazing blog, wowwww !!! I love the layout, the beautiful pictures and of course your writing-style.

  4. Oh man, that is the coolest thing I have heard! I hope you have a fabulous premiere party. I am right there with you…my husband and I just finished the 5th season on DVD tonight…we have just caught up as well…I don’t know if I will be able to make it week to week!

Tried to email a reply but it didn’t want to go through

  5. Ok, for anyone reading through the comments, I’ll explain what Sarah’s talking about above…
You see, I sent a reply to Sarah’s first comment (further above) explaining how we’re planning to hook up our projector to watch the season premiere of ’24’ eight-feet-wide. We’ve only watched previous seasons on dvd, so we’re a bit concerned about handling our nerves if we submit ourselves to weekly watching, but we can’t resist the temptation of a four-hour premiere.
    Less confused or more confused?

  6. My husband uses our one long spoon to eat cereal out of a tall, handled plastic cup. It’s his before-bed-snack.
Also in our silverware draw is a single mismatched spoon. I’m not even sure where it came frame. My children call it our “lucky” spoon, and they are pretty thrilled when they are the one that gets to use that spoon.

  7. Those are so bright and fun! I Have to admit I have a preference for long spoons as well. 😀 I have to tell you as well that I always love seeing your beautiful photography in each post! Its so inspiring, crisp and saturated with color (and patterns!). Your blog is so visually inspiring! 🙂

  8. Yes, the special spoon! I remember feeling so wonderful whenever I got it… in our family it was a mini-spoon, and I always fought for it whenever I had ice cream.

  9. Those are so cool! Where do you find all your treasures. I like to go to our antique store here in town, but I always find myself so overwhelmed with all there is to see. Do you have any tips on how to track down something special??

  10. Heather, I just want you to know that your blog inspires me. I found it a few months back when I came across you bitty booty pattern. And with great delight I saved that pattern and then realized that you had an entire web site with beautiful, colorful, bight and chearful designs. I love it hear. It is my haven. I look at your blog and find inspiration in the smallest things here. I have more that I could say, but with this being a public post I will leave it at that.
Thank you for all of your hard work and putting the time and effort in putting this blog together.

  11. Hi there… I came here to visit your blog, and… UAU!! everything here is magic! You have the perfect gift to create GOURGEUS things!!! Congrats!!!
    =)

  12. My mom had silver iced tea spoons too! I don’t suppose the plastic ones would be up to the task, but I used to find the silver ones perfect for digging out the last bits of ice cream in a gallon container! Hehehe! Cheers, Sarah

  13. We have a solo, long-handled spoon too. Where do these loners come from?? Hmmm. My girls are still using the plastic, mini variety of forks & spoons, but one day the one long spoon may be their favorite too. Love your site and your yo-yo tutorial. I am an aspiring sewer and I have enjoyed making a few of the yo-yos. Thanks!

  14. I used to work at a coffee shop and I always loved the long swirly handled spoons we’d use to stir big drinks.
I always wanted to buy a set and dip the handles in latex (which you can buy, like paint, in a bajillion colors).
Just an idea for a rainy afternoon for you. 🙂

  15. Ooh, you just brought back lovely memories of eating knickerbocker glory’s with my gran, at an ice cream parlour in a local seaside town. They always had lovely long shiny spoons!!!!!

  16. We had a set of long handle ice tea spoon/straws when I was a kid. We loved to drink our chocolate milk out of them. I haven’t seen the spoon straws in a store, but I do have long handle spoons I bought for fun occasions.

  17. Laugh. For Christmas this year, I got myself a sterling silver ice-tea spoon. I make myself a mocha every morning and this spoon is perfect for stirring it up. Yours are spectacular, however!

  18. Wow! I remember those spoons! I’m not quite sure, but I think it was at my Gran’s house. The wonderful colours, the feeling of that “beaded” handle in my little chubby hand and ice cream dripping down my arm, and the way you had to stick your tounge out really far to get all the ice cream from the deep bowl of the spoon… mmmm – delicious memory!

  19. That is so funny. I have one solitary silver spoon with a shell shaped bowl. It is much coveted in this house and there is oftentimes a race to see who can get to the drawer and claim the spoon.

  20. Heather, I about fell off my chair when I saw this glorious photo. I so remember these spoons!
My aunt used to have some & it was a very special treat for us to be able to eat our ice cream sundaes with them.
Thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories!

  21. i have these exact spoons, i bought them at a garage sale from some man who collected swizel sticks? my girls fight over them all the time and it’s funny to watch my 2 yyear old trya dn eat yogurt out of them.

  22. That is so funny about the spoon. We had one in the silverware drawer at home when I was growing up. It was just one. Long with a twisty stem thing. I loved that spoon. Next time I go home I’m going to look – I bet it’s still around somewhere.
I just found your blog but will be linking it to my blog. So much inspiration and eye candy to be found. I’m just happy looking.
