Huzzah!

The Baileys had a day in the sun—much needed. We dawdled around the Renaissance Festival for a few hours with my sister Julia and her family. Hermione guided us from place to place while Isaac and I juggled the baby between us. Elijah was in a separate world eating frozen cheesecake, making candle keepsakes, practicing alien languages—with a girl. Yep, Elijah brought a girl. I have been repeating this to myself ever since, Elijah brought a girl

I will adjust.

I'm always amazed by the variety of folks that carve a life out for themselves from this spectacle: broom-makers, puppet-makers, leather-mask-makers; there is room for all sorts. (Not much room for their bosoms in those corsets though.)

Charlotte wants one of everything. In the past, we've picked up bat wings and bendy-dragons for her to play with. This year, we couldn't extract Charlotte from the mega-overpriced, shoulder-sitting-dragon-pets booth to find a reasonable keepsake for her. Good memories will have to suffice this year.

Poor girl.

  1. Fun photos.
For years the Renaissance Festival was an annual tradition in my family. We haven’t been to one the last few seasons but your post reminds me to look it up again.
Cute pix of baby Bailey who is growing fast.

  2. Oooh, were they those shoulder dragons with the wires rigged up & fed down a tube, the end of which you can hold in your hand & manipulate to make their heads move? *So* cool. *So* expensive. 🙁 My mom wanted one for six years before she finally splurged.

  3. I have a friend who makes and sells wooden flutes at Rennaisance Faires around the country. I still think it’s . . . eccentric.

  4. That looks like a really fun day out!
I’m from the UK so I’d never heard of a renaissance fair. I am guessing it’s a bit like a mix between a historical re-enactment and a country skills craft fair.
Looks like you all had a lovely time, and lovely to see your new baby, who doesn’t look so new now…wow he’s growing up fast.
    Fleur xx

  5. Maybe you could make her a dragon plush. I’m not sure that would scratch the itch (or make it go away) or make her want the “from the source” one more, but I always liked the homemade versions of things I got.

  6. lol…OUR SON WAS 37 WHEN HE FIRST BROUGHT A GIRL TO A FAMILY EVENT…HE is now 40 and he married her on the beach in costa rica..he was just a couple of months short of his 40th birthday…

  7. Elijah brought a girl….I am still laughing!! I’m right there with you, so different to see our “little boys” growing up! It’s quite bittersweet, isn’t it?

  8. Hi Heather,
I just found your blog and as I was going through the older posts I saw the picture of the joust at the Renaissance Festival. My first thought was “oh, that arena for the joust looks almost exactly like that one at MY Renaissance festival…wait, that IS MY Renaissance festival jousting arena!!!” Funny how small the world is…I think I sit in that exact same location. Weird!
And I am bookmarking your blog because you are AWESOME creative!
