Granny Love

My
mother is an amazing seamstress.  And she single-handedly takes care of
all pajama needs for each of her seven grandchildren.  You should see
these pjs!  Or even better, all seven kids running around in
granny-made pjs.  We all live within 20 minutes of each other, so this
does happen on occasion.

Anyhow, see that amazing dress up there?  It was meant to be a
granny-made nightgown, but one irresistible sash and couple of matching
barrettes later and here it is — a darling little dress.  My mom
called a couple of weeks ago, "Heather, I have this nightgown I’m
making for Charlotte, but I think it might make an even-better dress.
What do you think?  Should I do it?"

Mom, you definitely made the right call.  The dress is beautiful and Charlotte is tickled silly with it. Thank you.

I’m a bit behind on some press stuff too, so before these issues are
completely unfindable, check out my designs in the pages of:

        • Better Homes and Gardens August 2007, p. 68
(I think there are two different covers for this issue)

        • Elegant Bride Spring 2007, pp. 186-193 — Ooo, a Freshcut wedding!
(follow this link — amazing photos!)

        • Patchwork & Stitching Vol 7 No 9, pp.30-32
(Australian magazine – Megan Butel‘s Freshcut quilt made the cover)

Oh yes, and please send a warm "hello" and a big round of blog love to my mom — this is her internet debut! : )  Love you mom.

  1. Gorgeous photos–they really demonstrate how full of life your fabrics and this gorgeous dress evoke. Your mother did a wonderful job. “Granny love” is a magical thing.
Congatulations on your well-deserved press. I love seeing how your designs are incorporated into new creations.

  2. A nightgown, you say?
    Are you mad?
    Is your mum mad?
    It is too beautiful!
    Aren’t mums clever?
My mum used to make all our clothes when we were kids – although the outfits that matched my sister’s outfits, didn’t always make me too happy.
It just so happens on today’s post on my blog (which is about the beach) – my sister and I are in matching outfits my mum made – navy and red fabric with little white polka dots.

  3. Too gorgeous for words! I can’t take my eyes off that beautiful dress and those beautiful photos!!! Fantastic job, Heather’s mom! Truly inspired!

  4. What a perfect, classic little girl dress. It’s simply dreamy.
And you have great legs (did you get those from your mom too?)!

  5. Oh WOW Heathers Mom! You did a GREAT job.
It looks like something you would buy in a fancy smancy boutique. I LOVE it.
Oh and Heather, your fabrics make beautiful wedding decor! That was the second wedding that I seen with the theme involving your fabric. The other one I saw, even had your designs translated onto the cake. It was beautiful.

  6. One post late but still worth the mention… I was sick on the couch this weekend watching Pleasantville and I SAW YOUR LAMP IN THAT MOVIE! There was a porcelin lady-lamp on Reese Witherspoon’s character’s desk. I think she’s in several scenes and I shouted out Oh-Heather has that lamp!
    My husband says, Who’s Heather?

  7. That dress is beautiful! And I love the way your mom put your prints together. Your mom was with you when we met last year. She is very kind, talented and so proud of you! Also, congrats on all the press. You are wildly successful and I’m proud of you, too! 🙂 Thanks for keeping us posted. I’m still looking for that Sew News. I’ll get these others ASAP.

  8. A very pretty dress – your mom is talented. I really need to make some for my girls – I keep buying the cute patterns & never get the time. It is always special to have pics of the kiddos wearing handmade clothes – and, yours are even more so because it is your fabric as well. 🙂

  9. Love these pictures of you and little bit. The dress is stunning. Does your mom need one more grandchild – like maybe one in her 40’s?
The Freshcut wedding photos are amazing. Loving those Ann Wood birds in that spread.
    Have a wonderful day.

  10. I obviously love the dress-adorable! But I’m swooning over the wedding. Wowzers..just gorgeous! And doth my eyes decieve me, but is there a tiny bit of Anna Maria’s Bohemian under the martini glass? What fun.

  11. If your mom ever wants to sell 3 of those dresses please email me. My nieces would look so cute in them! Gorgeous photos!

  12. Do you think you could fool your mom into thinking she has a lost grandchild… I have a child due in October that she can adopt as her own grandchild… 🙂 She is awesome!!! I have seen some things on your other posts that she has made but this is just adorable. The pictures are adorable as well.
    Beautiful family!!!

  13. These dresses are stunning and would make great patterns on fabricmatcher.com
We now have fabric matching to dress patterns so I can’t wait to see your fabrics on the patterns.

  14. Hello Heather,
Just wanted to say hello, I love reading you blog you are such a clever girl. Love the fabrics and everything you do with them, would really love to purchase one of your pear pin cushions.
Oh by the way, please post images of your designs in Better Homes & Gardens, couldn’t find it on your link.

  15. Wow! Really beautiful dress. Gorgeous fabrics. I just bought my first and made a baby sling from it. Love it. Wear it everywhere. I’ll have to send you a link when I blog it.
And I love those pictures of Charlotte and the bottom of your dress. Makes me nostalgic for the muppet babies. (In the most dignified way.)

  16. That dress is amazing! Twirly and cute! Just right for a little girl.
LOVE the Freshcut wedding photos — again, your fabric designs are AMAZING. And reminds me I need to get cracking on the quilt I’ve had perking.

  17. The dress is beautiful – I am still trying to find a store in Canada that sells your line of fabric. And the freshcut wedding is AMAZING – if I had to do it over again – I would I have a freshcut wedding too.

  18. I can’t find you on page 68 of Better Homes and Gardens. I have looked and looked through my issue. Am I just blind?
I love everything about your work and your husband’s photography and your blog and….I could go on and on. You are super talented!

  19. Oh, I am so sad now that I did not pick up the desire to sew when my own mom and grandma were so good at it. You are an inspiration & the dress is beautiful.

  20. Oh, I am so sad now that I did not pick up the desire to sew when my own mom and grandma were so good at it. You are an inspiration & the dress is beautiful.

  21. gorgeous! absolutely GORGEOUS! is it uncouth to ask where I can find the pattern?? Or did she make it up herself??
    Thanks!

  22. I see the apple didn’t fall far from the tree – you are both amazing seamstresses from what I can see:) The dress is adorable! Your photos really sweeten up the post – thank you for sharing!

  23. OK, I’m looking at page 68 of my August BHG (I’m a huge fan of the mag – I just pore over it for hours) and can’t figure out what is your design? Did you design the laminated oil cloth fabric? I’m dying to know! 🙂 And that dress, I want it! My daughter looks great in that color, more than any color and she we are still waiting for her hair to grow, so we need lots of flouncy dresses because people always mistake her for a boy (she’s 3). What a talented family. I can only hope I’m as good a seamstress as you and your mom someday! Are you able to reveal the dress pattern used, or if your mom made the pattern, is she selling it?

  24. Like Mother, Like Daughter. Great talent. The dress is adorable. I know if I showed my 4 yo DD, she’d love it too!

  25. What darling photos! The dress and your little one are adorable!
Congrats on the recent press! You are an inspiration to so many of us! Cece

  26. Yes, it’s the fabric that has the oilcloth treatment added to it! My fabric comes without that treatment, so they must have added the iron-on laminate that’s available at most JoAnn’s stores.

  27. How can I get the pattern for both the little girl’s dress/night gown and the dress/skirt the legs in the picture is wearing? I LOVE them!!
