I love old trucks.  One day I’d love to have a real, souped-up old
delivery truck with a new engine in it so I could drive it whenever,
wherever.

Somehow
I ended up on a milk-truck hunt the other day on the internet.  Not
shopping, just learning new things and taking a break.  It looks like a
company called Divco made all of the cool old milk trucks and most
other multi-stop vehicles for a good, long time.  They produced teensy
tiny delivery trucks for their dealers too.  I’m curious if they had
working engines. Here’s one — and another — adorable.

Too bad neither Pimp My Ride nor Overhaulin’ was around yet when I
lived in Hollywood.  Then my delivery-truck fantasy could have included
some ridiculous theme that suited my personality or hobbies of choice.
They do some crazy stuff on those shows.

True, I’m not sure what I’d want to put in the back of my dream
delivery truck — or what might be my obvious theme.  In the absence of
the perfect idea, I’m sure a couple of added seats might satisfy well
enough — that is, if my kids would allow me to drive them around in
such a silly vehicle.  Ooo, what if it was a mobile studio with
seatbelts?  With craft storage built in?  And what should it look like?  I
don’t know.  Maybe I’d just want the back to be empty.

I’m clearly just daydreaming here.  I’m still working out the details.

  1. I think I like your kind of daydreams….I go on random searches for things nobody thinks of as well….but mine are just odd….yours are pretty cool….:) I think a craft truck…..cause well….hey…how many of those do you see??

  2. your post cracked me up!! i cannot believe that i am making this confession via the internet, BUT….i do this sort of thing (rearrange, rebuild, refurbish, etc.) ALL the time in my head! it is so relaxing and fun for me…glad to know there are still fellow dreamers out there…

  3. What a great idea!!! We have a milk man, but I am sure his truck isn’t so cool. Too bad he comes in the middle of the night so who knows what he is in.
If I had my ride pimped, I would want a central vac to clean up all the loose cheerios in the back seat!

  4. Yes I agree with you on how cool milk trucks are. I also like the old Sedan Deliveries. Hmmm, perhaps that’s why I opted to buy a Scion XB many years ago. My husband and I call it the box and other friends call it Tami’s Toaster. If we ever win the lottery I’d like to get a custom paint job for it. 🙂

  5. i’ve been wanting one of those trucks for a while now but have not found one in good condition. my husband builds hotrods and he wants to build one that i can take to craft shows. while i’m waiting i’m driving an H2.

  6. I’d love an old 1930’s ford truck, with the “3-in the tree” gear shift. I can see myself tooling along to farmers markets and such! But, seeing as we live here in AZ, it would have to be retro fitted with an AC!

  7. When I was a child (born in 1944) our best friends were the Moser boys who lived a block away in our small farming village of Deckerville. Their father drove a milk truck. Gerald picked up the milk from local farmers and delivered it to the Johnson Milk Company, a block in the other direction from our house. When a milk box wore out he took it off the truck (a true truck, not like the delivery truck that delivered our milk) and set it in his back yard and it became our playhouse. We went through a couple of milk boxes and they were the greatest.

  8. Seriously? My husband has a body shop, and though we are too far from you to help, there are surely body shops in your area who are capable of doing some really awesome customizing. You could check around for a classic car consignment type of place on the internet or in your area and see what the truck you want would run you, then save up for the customizing that you want. It’s probably cheaper than you think to have it “pimped”! And also? Tax deductable if you use it for your business and as advertising. It would be great advertising.

  9. I have those kind of day dreams, keep dreaming I like feeling I’m not alone.
Love my Fresh Picked Pincushions, that I can’t wait to work on. We are moving real soon so I’ll have them to look forward to.
Love my discount, that’s cool too. You made my day.
    Warmly,
    Karla

  10. My boys have been obsessed with the milk truck that delivers at my daughters school. We have spent many morning the last few weeks watching the truck and the poor shy delivery man. He did finally talk to the boys and gave them a special treat of strawberry milk. It made their day.

  11. my sister and her boyfriend have a tres old smoked meat truck (and my sister is a vegetarian) that they converted to run on old French fry oil. They left the old smoked meat logo (in French) on the side of the truck. It’s pretty neat.

  12. How bizarre – I have a fetish for old trucks too, but it hasn’t really ever extended to delivery trucks (though they are pretty cool too). What I adore are the pickup trucks from about the 40’s to 50’s, with the domed cab roof, big steering wheel, and a bench seat up front. Painted in funky colors – like the pale aqua color, cherry red, orange, or even white. Big round headlights, really squared off cargo bed… I DIG old trucks. Thanks for sharing!

  13. I have a cool set up for you… I love old trucks. I grew up on my dad’s junkyard…looking at all kinds of older models and now I am married to a family who haul milk. So now I look at the Semi version. Very cool post. 🙂

  14. Love those old milk trucks. As kids… at the bus stop, our milk man was on our street right around the time we were there to catch the bus. We’d hop on the back and ride around the block on his back bumper. At the time we thought for SURE we were covert, but later on I realized he knew. Good times.
You could get one of those trucks… and vinyl “skin” them with your fabric. Saw once were a lady used blue starch and “wall papered” fabric to her VW Bug.

  15. It could be a traveling craft center. Bringing craftiness to a corner near you. like the traveling library but instead of books people can make stuff.

  16. I’m old enough (48) to remember fondly our milkman and milk truck. We had a metal box on the porch for the bottles of milk to be put in. Sometimes, we neighborhood kids would chase him down the street to buy chocolate milk. 🙂 Have you ever been to the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles, on Wilshire? It has old delivery trucks…my husband remembered a truck that delivered bakery goods – you could buy breads, cakes, donuts off the back of the truck – this truck was in the museum.
A few years ago I was watching a PBS show about campers and fell in love with the adorable 1930s-50s teardrop campers…so cute, especially when they fixed them up retro style. Fun post, Heather! 🙂

  17. Oh, just remembered this…one of my FAVE sweet old 40s movies involves a milk truck & a love story…go rent it or buy it (it’s on DVD) it’s called, THE CLOCK starring Judy Garland & Robert Walker. 🙂

  18. I LOVE those boxy delivery trucks! My Grampa worked for Grumman Olsen in Michigan, and they made the UPS/FED EX/Wonderbread type trucks. We got to deliver the unpainted silver trucks all the time when we visited my grandparents in the summers. He’d put in 3 or 4 big bushel bags of soybean seed in the back of the empty truck to give it better traction and for my brother and I to sit on (REAL beanbag chairs!). Those trucks always bring back good memories!

  19. Total lurker here, but I had to comment on this one. check out the Nissan S-Cargo van. Mid 90s they did a limited production – they are tiny and cute and seem to fit exactly into your day dream.

  21. They are incredible:) A milk made on wheel hehe! that’s sure would be great fun! I loved the second truck on your page- it is such a great retro style! I just love it!

  22. Very Cute ! I loved the trucks. Trucks are very useful vehicle. We can use it as food truck, milk truck and moving house from one place to another one. There is available different kinds of truck for different purpose. I just shifted in new house and booked moving company. They also used the trucks for shifting purpose.

  23. You have a picture of a Divco Milk Truck Go Kart that says W.M.A. Sparger on it, do you know where it is and who has it?? I rode in a parade in it somewhere around 1970!!
