Couch-Plop, Flip-Flop, House-Mop, Non-Stop

CabinW This weekend, I relaxed at a cabin in Pinetop with six girlfriends and
one agreeable little baby.  All
we did was talk and eat sweets. My new quilt & I claimed the fat,
fuzzy recliner. (Ugly never was so beautiful; I need a recliner now.) I
also learned that I'm not the only one who isn't too cool for
flip-flops-with-socks (Renee, you're awesome). It was
wonderfully-freezing outside.

It's been a busy few weeks. I've been immersed in many great
projects, and have been dealing with a few difficult things too —
hence the blogging slow-down.

After leaping from event to event
this Fall, I am thrilled to stay in one place for a while. Carpools,
family dinners, piano lessons, I'm loving them all.

YarnFlowerCropT On the work front, I'm designing my debut stationery collection with Inviting Company, prepping for the release of my next fabric collection, and motoring-along on new sewing patterns and finished goods.

At home, I'm getting my house put back together, including happy,
new petunias and roses out front, and I'm enjoying time with my kids.
(I like them.) Charlotte and I are playing with her new Knifty-Knitter Flower-Loom. We're considering crochet next. Is four too young for crochet?

Elijah
and I seek every opportunity for a bike ride. Even Isaac can be seen
riding my new, pink bike around — usually when it's dark outside, for
obvious reasons — it's that fun to ride. It's time to get that man a
blue cruiser already.

  1. Your getaway sounds blissful.
And is 4 too young for crochet? I doubt it. I want to learn and I am 42, which I hope is not too old.
I am teaching my 5 year old to embroider. She is so excited to learn!

  2. I visited Attic24’s blog, which I highly recommend
    http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/
two months ago and I found it so cute and lively that I started learning crochet immediately.
I work in a school and we think it’s very good for children because when they’re crocheting they practice concentration, manual skills, counting, etc.
If you like to see what I have learned at the moment, you are invited to my blog http://bachiame.blogspot.com/
    Kind regards from Barcelona

  3. I remember learning to knit (still can’t do it 40+ years later though) when I was maybe 5 or 6. It was too hard for my brain but my brother was flying along. A couple of years later I learnt to crochet and still love it. Whether it is right now for your daughter depends on her dexterity, motor skills and your ability as a teacher. If it works now that’s great. Heaps of ungainly chain work getting loads of praise would be wonderful. Cherrie

  4. I can’t bring myself to put one in the living room yet but I’m a closet recliner lover also. It sounds like you’re enjoying that sometimes elusive domestic bliss.

  5. Is she left handed? It might be more difficult since crochet patterns are written assuming you are using your right hand and therefore going a certain direction. If she isn’t strongly left handed it might be worth a try to teach her to use her right for crochet.

  6. Looks like a gorgeous getaway! I think it is lovely that you want to teach your 4 yr. old to crochet. She might just be able to catch on fast. I have a semi-ugly but oh-so-comfy chair in my bedroom that I won’t part with. The value of a comfy chair cannot be too great.☺

  7. I’m a leftie and I just learned to crochet, and last month for my daughter’s fifth birthday, we put together an old sewing basket filled with everything she would need to learn to crochet herself. She loved it. I’d go for it. Oh, and I have a cruiser too, and I love it.

  8. Your getaway sounds lovely…and I thought the whole socks and flipflop thing was pretty funny.:)
Also, I don’t think four is too young for crochet. Maybe just start with a really big hook and make a rug from strips of fabric that are about 3/4 in. wide. That’s how we began and it seems to be going just fine! 🙂

  9. 4 years old is the perfect age to start crocheting, my Mom and Grandma had me making endless ropes of chain stitch and then they’d pull it out and I’d start again. I have a great time crocheting still today.

  10. I’m teaching my 6 and 9 yr old how to embroidery so they can put some Christmas gifts together but I would have started teaching them a lot younger if they would have sat long enough to learn 🙂 I think it’s great to teach kids something like that. I believe it teaches them patience! Let me know how you begin teaching crochet because I would LOVE how to do that. That’s the one craft I have always wanted to do but never had anyone teach me 🙁
    Good Luck!

  11. I must ask how do you fit it all in. I have been working on my business for 6 years, have three children under 7, run art classes once per week and get my orders out within two weeks but I still have to look at your blog every week for inspiration. It is one of my ‘happy places’! Bike rides, crocheting and weekends with girlfriends…are you sure you don’t have a twin who you send away to do these things while you happily work away. Either that or you don’t sleep. Thankyou to your twin or lack of sleep or little fairies that come in to help you at night, it encourages me every day to keep doing what I love and make it work…

  12. Hi Heather! In reading this blog, I wondered about something. I belong to Mary Janes Farm Forum of over 1000 women who are right into crafts and creating. Would you consider doing an online lesson using your beautiful materials on your blog page with a discount on your product that same day? I’d be interested in doing something like this! What do you think?
I could get a ton of farm chicks on board!

Thanks for this wonderful message. Your blog is full of creativity and freshness. Your writing is impressive as your art work.

  14. Can you show some of your 4 yr old’s loomwork? My daughter is 5 and was just given one and we have no idea how to use it. I had no idea they could work one at this age.
