Blog Therapy

I have a babysitter for today — the idea was to hunker down and meet some of my work goals before heading out of town for George’s wedding (Isaac’s brother). But, here I am all flustered and unable to focus — as I type this, my brother is in surgery for a kidney transplant — my dear, sweet brother and his dear, sweet donor. I’m both excited for him and nervous. So, admittedly, I’m indulging my distracted self in a little blog therapy — photograph something fun I’ve made and show it to my friends — a sure-fire, feel-better solution (you always say the nicest things – thank you!). And, here it is – a watercolor of Elijah’s name (if that wasn’t obvious). The “E” is a disembodied bird beak – who knows what I was thinking, but it’s cute, huh?

Anyway, if any of you are praying-types, please say a prayer for my brother! I should have news in a couple of hours.

UPDATE:  Well, everything went very well and all parts are working. It’ll be a number of weeks, with close supervision by specialists, before he’s given a full stamp of approval. Thank you for your prayers.

  1. My heart and prayers are with you. I am a transplant recipiant (9 yrs in Sept 2006).
How do you thank the wonderful people who become organ donors? I will pray for a swift, uneventful and full recovery for your brother.

  2. I just recently found your blog and find it quite inspiring! Thanks!
I will pray for your brother…my neice had a heart transplant when she was 1 1/2 and now she’s almost 5. She’s doing so well. It’s a very intense journey and requires a lot of faith. You are all in my prayers.

  3. i will definately keep this in my prayers-they work!
Beautiful painting. I did one for my son, it is of a fire truck with a fireman climping up a ladder with Caden’s name going up the ladder. I always love to make “letter” art, what a great idea..maybe I will have to give that a try!

  4. We’re thinking of your brother and his donor over here! Wishes for swift healing and for that new shiny kidney to like it’s new home.
My father-in-law has had two kidney transplants, last one in 1997, and he is still going strong!
    Take care,

  5. Will pray right now, heather. My husband rode his bike cross country in June with TEAMDONATELIFE to raise awareness for organ transplant needs. Hooray for this!!!! God is faithful.

  6. Sending you and your family good thoughts; let us know how it goes. And thank you for sharing the watercolour, it’s just beautiful.

  7. My thoughts are with you, your brother and his donor. Pleased to hear the op was a success and send my good wishes for a happy new kidney and a speedy recovery.

  8. The painting is delightful! I wish I had that much control with watercolors.
I’m so glad your brother’s surgery went well and I’ll pray for his speedy recovery!

  9. Heather, glad to hear the update, and your bro and donor remain in our hearts. I have a dear friend who received a kidney and a liver two years ago and is doing GREAT!! Just wanted to share that with you and by the way, the illustration is fab fab fab!

  10. I donated a kidney to my sister two years ago and we are both doing great. In fact, she believes her personality has changed…for the better! I have always been the laid-back one in our family, but now she has also “mellowed.” Of course I probably can’t take all of the credit since after a kidney transplant AND a heart surgery, she probably has a new appreciation for what life has to offer.
Best to your brother – your family is in my thoughts.

  11. I hope your brother has a full recovery Heather. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if anything happened to my brother. Thoughts with you. Zoe x

  12. I’m sorry you weren’t able to get the things done that you would’ve liked but you had a very good excuse. I’m glad to read that your brother’s surgery went well. I hope that his prognosis continues on a positive trajectory.
And I think blogging is a fabulous form of therapy. For me it’s equal parts ritual (actually sitting down to think and write everyday or nearly everyday), venting (giving voice to my feelings), and finding a community to share with (there might be some other stuff in there too but those are the major components). All good things.

  13. What a day! No wonder you are unable to focus! Your brother, his donor, and both families will be in my prayers. You are a wise woman to call on your friends for support today!

  14. Best wishes of a full and fast recovery to your brother and his donnnor. I have just sent them a prayer when I saw your post as I was checking the instructions for the Yo-Yo. Thank you for writting the tutorial. Ah, and I like the lovely watercolor!.
