HELLO my name is Heather

  • A Precious Freedom

Isaac & Laura’s younger brother, George, lives in Germany where
he teaches ‘Teaching ESL’ at a university there.  George is absolutely
amazing with language.  He speaks English, German, Danish, and Chinese
    — an interesting combination, to say the least.  He could have gone to
the last olympics as a translator.

Anyhow, George sent a letter out to all of us yesterday about the
election.  It puts a new perspective on our access to the polling
places here in the states.  Isaac & are heading out to vote in the
next little while and I strongly urge you to go vote too.  Call a
friend for babysitting if you need it.  Trade babysitting even, but
vote.  And what a monumental election today, whichever way it goes!

    I_voted_today

    Dear Family,
One of the hardest parts about being in Germany is having to vote by
absentee ballot. And one of the hardest things about voting by absentee
ballot is trusting in a bureaucracy that is not too on the ball with
getting you that ballot. Well, I was personally on the ball in
requesting mine months ago, but unfortunately, I am not going to get to
vote in this year’s election. Honestly, it just breaks my heart because
I have never cared more for my country than now.
         I happen to be
reading John Adams and enjoying it as much as I have enjoyed any other
book. It gives me a glimpse into the life of a man who I believe was
inspired by God to resist evil and help establish a system that would
give voice to its people (NOTE: not the absentee ballot system). I
might add that Abigail Adams has been an inspiration to me, as well.
She was evidently every bit the freedom fighter, every whit the mind. I
believe that we have had few such leaders since, but I hope that the
future will bring us more; we sorely need women and men of such caliber.
I hope that all of you are taking the opportunity of this precious
freedom to vote, whether you vote for Obama, McCain, or Mickey Mouse
(if you feel somewhat desperate like I have at times during this
election). It is such a precious freedom and no less important for our
    small voices. God bless America.

    Love,
    George, Christina, & Joe

  • Lulu’s New Digs

    Charroomsm2
    I’m
back.  I know I never mentioned that I was leaving, but you figured
that out, right?  I spent a week in Houston at Quilt Market with my
    sew-good friends.  Laura,
Isaac’s sister, flew in to assist me and we had more fun than two
people should on a business trip.  I met Laura 16 years ago, when I
first met Isaac.  We’re two weeks apart in age and are good, good
friends.  More on Laura later — or earlier.  She tends to pop into
    posts regularly around here.

My new sewing patterns are now available wholesale to retailers.
We’ve built some amazing new systems to support our wholesale program,
including an online ordering system.  We were at Market to introduce
that program and my sewing patterns to the sewing/quilting industry.  I
can’t say what a thrill it is to have such robust systems in place.
Now I can really go to town on design, while Tara and Rachel keep
    order-delivery running smoothly.

I came home to the Halloween rush and a week of Fall activities.  We
barely fit pumpkin-carving in for all of the parties and events going
on.  However, carving your pumpkins on Halloween day does mean they’re
fresh and spritely for trick-or-treating — especially when the
weather’s been in the mid-90s all week.  My jack-o-lantern has
eyelashes and cheeks and Elijah gave his a friendly uni-brow.

I’m excited to be back.  I’ve got my kids under my wing, my home
mostly back together and a mind full of projects to get started on.

    Who is Lulu?

  • Pop Daisy

    Daisypop

Just what is it about this bouquet-of-one that makes me smile?
Gerbera Daisies have got to be the most innocent, la-di-da, casual,
take-it-easy flowers there are.  And I’ve always had a thing for hobnail
too — it’s so silly and odd, ridiculous and fabulous at once.  Look
how the vase and flower make a figure 8 together.  Bam. I love that!

One of my Pop Garden prints is named ‘Pop Daisy’
    – one big, bursting daisy.  This bouquet reminds me of that print —
happy & simple, just like my Sunday ought to be.  That’s the goal
    anyhow.

Busy week coming up.  Pretty little flowers all around the house to keep things energetic — one of my favorite tricks.

Isaac & Charlotte flew out to St. Louis to visit Laura
& crew.  He put up crown molding in her family room, photographed
some paintings, took some portraits. I don’t know the whole list, but
they did fit in a quick jaunt to the zoo one of those days.  The St. Louis Zoo
has a freaky, bald chimp.  I’ve never heard of such a thing.  Isaac
didn’t get a picture of her though;  the chimp was in the middle of
some extra-gross behavior I hear.  Check her out here instead.  So interesting.  Her name is Cinder.  She looks alarmingly mannish.

    Thestompw
I’m sure Charlotte had plenty of fun while the grown-ups worked.  Kids
are resourceful that way.  Here’s a shot to prove my theory.  Bubble
    wrap.

Elijah and I stayed put because of school.  However, once the weekend hit, Elijah and I headed out to a local resort (but not till we went out for dinner, had ice cream and made our first trip to the new Lego store).
The entire next day was spent at the resort’s water park:  lazy river,
waterslides, wave pool, lounge chairs, cabana-boys-refilling-sodas,
lots of sunblock, sketchbook, lap-swimming (just a little).  We had our
    own fun.

Check out this insane waterslide.  There’s no pool of water at the end, just a long trough of water for you to skid across.  Completely insane.

Great weekend.  Time to do it again.

So, it was late.  Too late for shopping.  Too late for humans to be
awake, really.  And though I have a broad assortment of felts, I just
couldn’t find ones that worked well as stems on my latest pincushions.
So look what I discovered in my bleary-eyed desperation — 1.5" wide
    velvet ribbon works too.

I’ve been hoarding this emerald green piece for a few years now.  I had meant to use it in my hair for a Scarlet O’Hara moment,
but I don’t have the wardrobe for that kind of sass.  It also reminds
me of the hat Rhett bought for her — the one she puts on upside-down.
    Anyhow.

    Prepping for Market
again.  We’re just about ready to launch our wholesale program.  Should
be this week.  This means you’ll soon be able to find my patterns and
other upcoming whatnots at your local stores – yay!  We’ll be at the
Westminster/Free Spirit booth throughout Market, so tell your local
store-owners to come find us there and we’ll get them all set up.  If
you’re a retailer who has emailed us about pattern-purchasing, expect
an email within the week with details on how to place an order.  We’ve
had to construct policies, protocols and a website, set up emails, get
all of the appropriate record-keeping systems in place, etc, etc.
We’re just about there.  If you have any questions about wholesale,
    email info@HeatherBaileyWholesale.com

Scissors_2Okay, so while we were in Cottonwood,
I picked up a new pair of scissors.  They’re Hon brand and they’re
pretty great.  Even the very tippy-tip of the scissors cuts well.
They’re not as pretty as Ginghers, but I’m thinkin I like them too.  Anyone familiar with this brand?

    …How about mobile, Divco, ‘Supplies!
Parties’ — a park-n’-shop novelty for scrapbook nights, bridal
showers, baby showers, etc.  I like it.  Or I could have the cutest
    camper/RV ever.

    Lia made me these
wonderful presents for my birthday.  They made their way safely here
all the way from Singapore.  Thank you, Lia!  Such a great surprise.

I particularly love the varied textures on the tag above.  Lia used a couple of papers from my line.  The ‘h‘ is decorated with one of my corner stamps, but it has a thick, clear coating over the top.  I’m thinking she may have used Diamond Glaze.  Have you ever tried Diamond Glaze?  It’s fantastic.  I use it when making painted necklace pendants.  I don’t think I’ve shown you those.

    Creativesoul1Lia,
did you do the crackle finish on the tree trunk yourself as well?
Crackle finishing can be tough — good job.  It really looks great.

And check out this fun, framed collage and birthday card.  A lot of
scrappers cut shapes from papers and then use them as 3-D elements in
their projects — such a great way to achieve a layered effect.  I made
a fun, little gift-box using this technique for my upcoming CK article.  I’m excited to put together some variations in the next week or so and post a free pattern for it.  More on that later.

Speaking of paper crafts, check out this Raggedy Ann masterpiece that Leslie
put together.  I’m just ga-ga for it.  I’ve always loved how well
cherry-red works with this icy, pastel palette.  Leslie really picked
up on that and used it to maximum effect. (And check out these overalls too.)

    Creativesoul6w
Oh, now I need to hunt down the childhood photo of me gripping my
favorite Raggedy Ann doll.  I believe my mom tried to take my doll away
from me for the portrait, but I would have none of that and must have
thrown a fit.  In the end, my mom ended up with a photo of me greedily
clutching my doll — with tears welled up in my eyes — doubly not what
she had in mind.  I was about one and a half.

    Wandering.

I’m looking forward to next week.  Lots of fun little design
projects to wrap up and some baby presents to make for friends.  I was
going to embellish some onesies, but now I’m thinking Happy Stacker
ring toys with coordinating 3-D tags as cards – kinda like the top
photo.  Might get out my Diamond Glaze even.  Though I had draped Lia’s
tag there casually for a the photo… well, they just look so great
together.  No need for wrapping paper.

    Creativesoul5

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned the new HB Paper Crafts Group on Flickr
yet, but it’s all set up and ready for you.  (Erica just posted the cutest wooden dolls.)  I’ve added the paper group to my
sidebar, along with the new Pop Garden & Bijoux Flickr Group for
those fabulous fabric projects of yours.  Gah!  Double gah!  You guys are amazing.  I love Flickr groups.  Really
such an easy way to inspire and get inspired.

  • Divco

I love old trucks.  One day I’d love to have a real, souped-up old
delivery truck with a new engine in it so I could drive it whenever,
    wherever.

    Divco1t2
    Somehow
I ended up on a milk-truck hunt the other day on the internet.  Not
shopping, just learning new things and taking a break.  It looks like a
company called Divco made all of the cool old milk trucks and most
other multi-stop vehicles for a good, long time.  They produced teensy
tiny delivery trucks for their dealers too.  I’m curious if they had
working engines. Here’s one — and another — adorable.

Too bad neither Pimp My Ride nor Overhaulin’ was around yet when I
lived in Hollywood.  Then my delivery-truck fantasy could have included
some ridiculous theme that suited my personality or hobbies of choice.
They do some crazy stuff on those shows.

    Divco3
True, I’m not sure what I’d want to put in the back of my dream
delivery truck — or what might be my obvious theme.  In the absence of
the perfect idea, I’m sure a couple of added seats might satisfy well
enough — that is, if my kids would allow me to drive them around in
such a silly vehicle.  Ooo, what if it was a mobile studio with
seatbelts?  With craft storage built in?  And what should it look like?  I
don’t know.  Maybe I’d just want the back to be empty.

I’m clearly just daydreaming here.  I’m still working out the details.

  • Cottonwood & The Pillow Incident

My mother-in-law is in town.  We drove up near Sedona to pick her up from Quilter’s Quarters where she was teaching a doll class.  Such a calm &
pretty drive.  We went for dinner at a great little restaurant that was
built where the town’s old movie theatre had been for many, many
decades.  Tavern Grille in Cottonwood, AZ.  They serve
    humongous portions.

Cottonwood is just south of Route 66.  I’m not too familiar with the
place, though we did stay there once before.  It’s the town where The
Pillow Incident took place — now family lore.

Let’s just say that the front deskman at the hotel wanted to keep
our pillow for himself (we had brought a pillow from home in case one
of us wanted to sleep in the car on the drive and we accidentally left
it in our room).  The pillow was clearly marked as ours and we weren’t
leaving without it.  Getting him to return this pillow was straight out
of a Seinfeld episode, including a brief, comical tug of war.  When the
front deskman eventually handed the pillow over the counter to Isaac,
after twenty minutes of denying its existence, he just couldn’t quite
let go of it.  It was hilarious.  Poor Isaac was completely bewildered
    — and I had the giggles.

    It was a super-nice pillow.

The Pillow Incident — one of my funniest and strangest memories.  I should get Isaac to record the whole affair.  I could have sworn we were on Candid Camera.

  • Snowflakes… Nose and Eyelashes

    Braids2whb
When I was little, my favorite dress-up hair-do was looped pigtail
braids.  So, when Charlotte agreed to get Christmas-ed up for a recent
    photoshoot
with a vintage theme, looped pigtail braids were the must-do
    hair-do.

I couldn’t remember what my mom would do with the ends of my braids
though.  This required a phonecall. Turns out she tucked them up under
the rubberbands that held my pigtails in place, so the ends of my hair
were hidden next to my scalp.

Of course, I had to try this hair-do out with Trash Ties.  The
result was much tidier than my previous attempts with rubberbands.
Because I could just wrap a Trash Tie around each looped braid to
secure it — and I didn’t have to stretch a rubberband around the braid
over and over — the braid didn’t get all frayed and fuzzy.  And I
could easily adjust the loops to match each other.

    Braids1whb
The snowflakes?  Those were trimmed off of a felt garland I picked up
at Hobby Lobby.  The same Trash Tie that’s holding each braid in a loop
is holding each snowflake in place.  I just hooked the ends of the
Trash Ties through the centers of the snowflakes.  Kinda like tucking
    paper into a paperclip.

Why am I going on about the hair-do?  Who knows.  I’m nostalgic for
looped braids, I guess.  What I really should be rambling on about is
this adorable little girl who is every bit as sweet and wonderful when
her hair is askew and dreaded up with popsicle juice.

The red & white dress makes me giddy too.  It gets my right in my Annie spot.

I don’t believe I can sneak-peek the Christmas projects from the
Creating Keepsakes article this early, but I can certainly sneak-peek
the little sweetie who helped me with the shoot.
