I’m heading out of town in a couple of hours for a meeting-of-the-minds with some industry folks – Chicago! First time there. It’s supposed to be 0˙, with a wind-chill of -35˙ or so. I can’t even fathom what that feels like. Where I’m at, it’s tee-shirt weather. So, I’ve borrowed my sister’s long, thick wool coat and I’m hoping for the best.
In my flurry to gather-up some cold-weather necessities, I delegated the promised studio photography to my more-than-capable husband, who kindly complied. But, he won’t let me post the photos just yet as he wants a do-over, with the chandelier switched on this time. And, I’ve gotta let the man have his say (that’s the least I can do – he’s sure helped me a lot these last couple weeks). So, I’ll be back on Wednesday with those promised photos and some fun new friends to declare, I’m sure.
Oh, and Isaac insists that I make it clear that I take 98% of all the photos on my blog. It’s a chivalry-thing. At least, I think/hope that’s the case. Did you see his comment on this post, kindly defending my honor? Made me feel like a medieval maiden (albeit one with state-of-the-art camera equipment).

Have a wonderful playtime in Chicago. Yeah. It’ll be cold.
I can’t wait to get a view of the whole studio… it’s so happy!
I’m in Iowa and I can expertly say, you will need far more that a wool coat. There will be hats and gloves and scarves and sweaters and perhaps long underware that will need to be procured. And if you’re outside, COVER UP! Frostbite is not a joke. The wind should be cut down, if you are downtown, but between buildings, it really rushes. I try not to leave the house when it gets like this. It’s icky. Go back to Chicago in the spring, when it’s pretty!
I hope you packed a hat scarf and gloves as well. you’re going to need them.
I’m just 2 hours north of Chicago, and you will absolutely need to have every square inch of skin covered. 2 hats, mittens over gloves…. Even then, if you are walking from the car to the building you will wish you were wearing goggles!
Keep warm!
I second Sarah’s comment! I’m in the Chicago suburbs, and the wind chill is -11 by me. ABSOLUTELY bring extras to cover head, hands, neck & as much face as you can! It’s freakin COLD here! The cold is bad, but that wind downtown is no joke; it can get super windy on the lake. Can’t wait to here your thoughts on our fair city! Good luck with meetings!
You’re coming to Chicago just to see ME!!?!? No? Oh. Poo.
It is windchills of -30 this morning, near the airport.
What does that feel like? Well, when you are outside and you breathe through your nose, your nostrils stick together. The little hairs (supercillious?) in your lungs FREEZE so you can’t take very deep breaths. It is also super dry, so lip balm is a MUST.
And if worse comes to worse, call me up and I’ll bring you a nice hot cuppa cocoa, wherever you’re staying!!! 🙂
OK, so I’m sitting here at the airport on their free wireless internet (love this technology!), reading your forboding comments about Chicago’s weather. I did manage to pack a scarf and gloves and a couple of sweaters, but from the sound of things, I’m going to lose my one and only nose for sure!
But, seriously, thanks for the warnings. And, if you want to keep warning me so you’ll have a handy place to record your feelings on unfair temperatures, then feel free to lay it on thick here in the comments. Every miserable report of bone-chilling weather makes me feel warmer already – I think it’s that misery loves company thing. In this case, anticipated misery loves company 🙂
I do hope you get by tender buttons. Love that place.
I moved to the Chicago-area burbs from Los Angeles a few months ago. This weather and “wind chill” is totally absurd. I’ve just decided to never leave the house, except when I walk my son out to the bus. Its all sunny and unassuming out the window, but the second you step out the door you regret it. Our garage door started acting like it was having seizures last night, I think it was upset about the cold and went on strike.
I have been wishing for snow as it has been sooo hot over here…but reading all of your comments…I think I’ll gladly accept living where I do. I’ll remember to visit Chicago in spring. Hope you have a lovely time Heather. Can’t wait to hear all about it…or is it a top secret mission!
Your website is SUPER cute! You take amazing pictures. Love it!
So I just have to chime in here as I sit in my office on the 42nd floor of the AON building in downtown Chicago – looking out on a frozen Lake Michigan. I read somewhere recently that it is colder here than in Siberia – that’s quite a statement. I’m going broke driving to work everyday however the thought of taking the train literally gives me the shivers and my car is running on empty since standing out in this weather while pumping gas is an equally gut-wrenching thought. Hope you have a lovely visit and as someone else said – come back in the spring!
Have a great time in Chicago and I’ll remember the temp you will be experiencing while we experience our 100F weather.
I love love LOVE Chicago and am hoping to move there later this year. Stay warm and don’t forget to get some Garrett’s popcorn. It’s the best.
I went to a fabric store this weekend that had a whole section dedicated to your fabric. Loved all of it! I can’t wait to start sewing. Have fun in Chicago!
Hello from Chicago. Yes, a warm coat, hat, scarf, mittens, long underwear, wool socks, warm boots… You may be shocked at what die-hards Chicagoans are. We don’t let a little cold weather stop us!
Hi.
i just wanted to thank you for the inspiration on your green chandelier. I took that idea, and at first i thought of doing it in blue, but i loved your grenn so much that i painted it in green as well. In by blog i say that it was your idea, and i also show your original. i hope thats okey. Thanks again for your inspiration.

Today i was taking photos of things, and i was attempting to ‘copy’ your technique. i ended up using the digital macro feature… and great sunlight. i guess i’ll find out when i upload them to my machine.
Cant wait to see photos of the studio – i am so inspired by these beautiful studios at the moment, and i know yours will be fabulous. You have the most wonderful taste. Renee
Go to Target and get some longjohns before you leave, and wear them! And bring plenty of layers and all the other stuff everyone else said! We used to live in AZ and now are in MA and it is so cold, you just can’t imagine it there! And it’s colder in Chicago than Boston right now. Today I had to pour boiling water down my bathtub to thaw out the pipes, and it’s only in the teens/20’s here!!
Good Luck, and I hope you are inside most of your trip!
Elisabeth
ps I made a bunch of your headbands for gifts and everyone loves them!! I am now taking requests for more!
tender buttons? what/where/how/when?
How could it be, I’ve never heard of this place. I need more info!
p.s. Wow, lots of Chicago girls. We should have a crafty meeting sometime!
Hey there, I am still hoping that you’ll publish that cute lil’ bag pattern that you slipped into your blog. Sorry can’t up the headband.
heeeaaather!!!! i cannot wait to see the pictures of your studio. the little sneak peeks are enough to keep me up at night wondering what the rest looks like!
