I was going to tell you all about my Saturday at the Renaissance
Festival, my thoughts on hip-junk, and how we should all abandon our
purses for random draw-string baggies dangled from a belt. But, a deeper
study into the benefits of bag-free shoulders and the flirty
possibilities of shakin’ our hip-junk as we carry on about our daily
tasks just might threaten a revolution of modern accesorization. So,
I’ll leave you to study out the possibilities in your own quiet moments.
Sparing you the details, my Renaissance experience boiled down to bright conversation
with good company, some mighty people-watching, cheering for medieval
Billy Idol on horseback, and witnessing Charlotte’s poignant first
encounter with her personal hero, Babe.
Mark ten points in the Good Mama
column, cuz I’m gonna need ’em — this week’s going to be a
busy, work-filled one.
(And, no, we did not dress up. That isn’t a photo of me. I was hoping to take a whole series of hip-junk photos, but my camera ran out of batteries.)

followed your link to Charlotte and her coat – fabulous!
Enjoy it to the fullest.. my little girls are 15 and 20 now and won’t let me dress them anymore.. as much as I’d like to…
Hmm, I don’t think my hips need any extra junk…besides, I love the purses you make. I absolutely have to have one just like the pink one in the pictures of your studio. And wow, that is totally medieval Billy Idol.
Hey I just found out that you are in the Phoenix area. I live in Gilbert and have been reading your blog for a while with sporadic commenting. Nice to know you are local!
Oooh, it’s Renaissance time already! I love the hair braiding gals (and jousting guys!). And I’ll keep my junk in my purse thank you, since I have enough in my trunk right now.
Hi I love it it is a wonderful Idea I will dress up just like that.
THanks for the tip
Ope, it’s been brought to my attention that my medieval knight may be a bit more Sting than Billy Idol, and with a bit of Rutger Hauer mixed in. Thanks, Michelle – you’re totally right!
I’ve never been to a renaissance fair, they look like fun. Poor Rutger/Sting/Billy, he looks awfully hot in all that armour! Oh, I found a bag full of fabric yo-yo-s from the 1940s at a thrift store this past weekend. I can’t wait to work them up into something special.
Just letting you know that I love your blog!! And what’s a better time than a medieval festival to delurk 🙂
Too bad your camera batteries ran out, is there an oficcial site for the festival with more photos?
I’m a big fan of jousting, but there’s not often a chance to see a real tournament around here. This was the last time:

I never wear a purse, but I have several drawstring bags 😉
Sarasota(home of the Ringling Museum) has the most fab http://www.renaissancefest.com/Sarasota/Sarasota2006.htm
fair each year! I used to do the show as a basketweaver and loved wearing the mostly burlap and gypsy costume! They have knights who are in a giant chess match with jousting! It’s fun!! Did you guys have any giant turkey legs? Glad you had fun!
I don’t think I’ve been to a Renaissance Faire, though I’d love to go. Up here there’s a lot of talk about King Richard’s Fair…Perhaps I’ll get to go before we move in June.
There would have been no shame if you had dressed up! It sounds like you had a wonderful time.
Renaissance Fairs for me spell a little bit of Heaven. Thanks for sharing.
well i have to say i prefer this sort of hip junk to a fanny pack! we all remember those!
Never been to one but I can imagine the people watching would be tops!
Whew…one time I went to one of those, I got flashed by the leathermaker in his kilt. He was advertising one of his ‘contraptions’. Needless to say, I did NOT want to see his ‘junk’…but hip junk, why that’s just fine!
Ooo, I love the Renaissance Faire, but I don’t think hip junk works for me on a practical level. A purse I can set down, those bags would just be banging against me and getting in my way all day. It makes for a cute costume though. 🙂
hehehe – are you sure it’s not you! 😉
Yeah – 10 points in the good mama column! we call all use alittle extra of those!
sounds like fun! I have never been to a renaissance festival before.
Next time you do a REN fest – its all the more fun to dress up in some garb – it makes it all the more fun! And there is definitely something to be said for pouches on a nice leather belt instead of a purse that slumps your shoulders or ties up one of your hands.
I love the Ren Fest, it is just hard to think about you being there now, while we are all being snowed in here in Iowa!
Thank you for a lovely time I spent enjoying your blog and website. I am going to make some bitty booties for my newest neice, Sienna. I saw you on Sonorn Living and went right to the computer.Thank You so much.
Sincerly,
Leslie
