Boom Tin Tin

Pokin’
back in for a HELLO.  Isaac’s in Philadelphia photographing a wedding
this weekend.  I convinced him to stay an extra few days to explore (in
proxy perhaps — would have liked to stay longer last June).  His
rental car was creamed by a small truck minutes after leaving the
airport though.  Completely not his fault.  He’s not hurt at all &
the other guy’s got the tab for the damage.  But, as all other rental
cars were spoken for, he’s now in for an adventure with PA mass transit
perhaps.  Let’s hope he leaves the hotel — or at least returns well-rested, right?

Took myself out to see The Kingdom on Friday night, babysitting
already in place.  A large part of that movie was filmed about a mile
or so from my house, on an old out-of-action military base.  The
baseball-game bomb-scene and big-ol’-shoot-out at the end were two of
the sets you could see from the road.   Man, some of those buildings
sure looked shabby and pathetic in the movie — nasty stucco stains,
filthy stairs, roofs teeming with satellite dishes.  They were just
facades, all plywood and braces from the back.

My friend Sheeba was an extra on the set.  And
thank heaven for the inside scoop, as we were awakened one night by a
fearsome boom.  The house shook and grumbled and I sprung out of bed
with a comical, "What…was… that!"  It was 3am or so.  Turned out
they blew up the set that night.  For realistic tattering, I’m sure.
Whoa!  Would have been nice to get a notice on that one.  I bet it was
a busy night for the local 911 dispatchers.

Anyhow, no!, my neighborhood looks nothing like Saudi Arabia.  Just a fun bit of this & that.

New tins above.

  1. I would really like to see that movie- it looks great.
Love the pincushions and am glad Isaac did not get hurt- was all his photography equipment OK??

  2. Sorry to hear about the accident. How irksome!
I live in Philly. The public trans is not bad at all. We use it fairly frequently. Though it may be kind of a drag to carry his equipment around.
I hope he can enjoy his stay. The art museum area and boathouses along the river are so pretty this time of year.

  3. Another Philly girl here. The previous commenter is right – the mass transit isn’t bad and will take one most places one needs or wants to go (even out to the distant ‘burbs, where I live). It’s not cheap, but if Isaac’s good with a map then he should be fine, but for the hassle of the equipment. If he’s in Center City then he could look into cabs, which aren’t that expensive relative to other cities – a nice bonus. Sorry about the accident, too, and glad he’s o.k. (I always feel responsible for the welfare of visitors, as if they’re coming to see me specifically) – dealing with I-95 ’round the airport requires an adventurous spirit and rather cavalier approach to traffic law.

  4. Hi Heather,
I am a lurker but just coming out of lurkdom to say how much I love your fabric, it is just so lovely. It makes my life feel surrounded by beauty, if that makes sense, I am going to use some to make a darling pocketbook out of Amy ‘s book “Bend the Rules Sewing”.

  5. I am grad your hubby is O.K. Love the tins and pincushions in the pic. I think it is wonderful that you take time for yourself; I think every mother should do that.

  6. Hello neighbor!
I have been reading your blog for a while and didn’t realize you lived close to me until this morning when I noticed the area code on your husband’s website. I too had fun seeing the sets for that movie and have been looking forward to seeing it since I am a Jennifer Garner fan. BTW since you are so close do you ever speak at Quilt guilds?
    Thanks,
    Becky

  7. We drive through the old base every day and it was definitely interesting to see the set take shape. I am really interested in seeing the movie myself. How did you like it?

  8. Yet another Philly girl chiming in! I agree with Jeanette – the Art Museum area is a nice area (anytime of the year). Mass transit isn’t too bad. Hope he figures it all out!

  9. You know – if your blog does nothing nore than encourage couples to take a DATE NIGHT once a week – almost no matter what – you will have done your good deed!
Sure wish we had figured out a way to do that when the kids were young! But now we go dancing EVERY Saturday night – mostly Swing, but love Ballroom, too. Bonus: it’s an excuse to dress up. Super bonus: nothing makes kids happier or more secure than *seeing their parents happy together* doing a fun thing, like dancing. Really.

  10. Heather,
You must be up to something fun because your post’s have been vague as of late, posting about movies & t.v. shows? Are we going to have the pleasure of some big reveals or catch up’s -or- are you just busy like the rest of us?

  11. Hi! I just absolutely love coming to your blog. I know you don’t know me, but I love your style. It just makes me want to curl up with a book and some cocoa and read! Glad your hubby is okay. I’m a misplaced Jersey girl (now in L.A.) and I miss the east coast! What I wouldn’t give for a weekend in Philly!

  12. Wasn’t there a Muskrat Love song by the Captain and Tenille? I don’t know how to spell it, but you are probably too young to know who they are! Sigh . . . wish I didn’t.
