The Aftermath

Candy
There are lots of ways of dealing with the aftermath of Halloween
— the candy.  Isaac and I let our kids have at it for a couple of days
and then get rid of what’s left.  I have some friends who stage it out,
dishing one candy per day Muckymuck2
for who-knows-how-long.  Then there’s the pick-out- your-favorite-insert # here
pieces method.  Makes for a good alternate discussion topic amongst
mommies when you’ve already memorized everyone’s birth stories!

Ok, being a bit sarcastic, yes.  We have plenty of other things to
talk about than birth and candy!  In fact, we didn’t discuss birth or
candy at all last weekend in Houston.  Oh wait, I did hear how Anna‘s fourth baby was her most difficult delivery.  But beyond that brief interlude, it was all art and schoolmarms.
I probably had too much fun at Market.  My next fabric line didn’t
quite make it in time to be released this Market, so I was free to hang
out as I pleased.

I met some new friends and some old ones too.  If you haven’t seen Liesl’s new company,
go take a peek!  My gush over her paper dolls was a bit embarrassing in
hindsight.  I even ran to get my sketchbook to show her all the paper
dolls I’ve been sketching.  Just to prove, "You see, I’m not just
saying that I’m excited about your paper dolls!  I really am."  Ridiculous.  Liesl, forgive me.  And what a sweetheart and smart.  She’s really got things together.

Hmmm.  I don’t know that I’m up for listing everyone
this time.  The list keeps getting longer.  I’d rather just report my
embarrassing moments : )  I was a bit sleep deprived and shouldn’t have
been in a professional setting that last day.  Nothing horrible… I
just get a little too excited about things like thread and Japanese
fabric, you see.  I’ve got to chill.

I figure I now have six months to rest up for before Portland (yah, right).  My eyes and my stomach are set on this chocolate palace for an evening escape.

Had the best time showing Laura around too!  So fun.

And yes, there were plenty of perfectly polite, well-mannered, calm
conversations as well.  I’ve just got to get more sleep next time!

Want some candy??

  1. your last comment about Market actually struck a chord with something that has already been nagging at me today…why are us super-enthusiastic types always having to apologize for being super enthusiastic and exicted and maybe a little gushy & jabbery about the things that make us happy? why can’t everyone else feel a little sheepish for not being as excited as we are?
lovely photos. somehow i think getting to literally wallow in the candy goodness, even just for a short period of time, more than makes up for the rest getting taken away later. =]

  2. Love the sticky hands…I didn’t know there was a quilt market in Portland and haven’t ever been to one (but want to very badly) and my sister lives in Portland so now my brain is busy thinking how I can go to that one!! Frequent flier miles are going to come in handy!! See..I’m getting overly excited at just the mention of Market! 🙂

  3. aawwwee, I am missing our fun times now. Missing the school marma too!! After seeing the giddy goofiness I displayed in Gina’s video blog, I know what you mean about apologizing. Oh well. Some of us are just made like that.
    I want candy.
    Anna

  4. Wow, she did a pretty impressive job of taking that candy down! If you need a tour guide in Portland, I am available! Hopefully it will be a dry May for all you out of towners.

  5. I was wondering why there was no buzz about a new fabric line from miss Heather Bailey after the market. So now I know. Lol. We use the “have at it” method for the candy. Usually we let our 5 year old eat what he wants on Halloween then get rid of it. This year he was to tired to eat it that night so he put it in a pile on the table and hasn’t asked for it since…now that I think about it. Weird. I better go check for wrappers under the bed. 🙂

  6. Um, no thanks on that candy offer (my stomach actually did a little flip-flop at that picture).
I’m looking forward to Portland’s quilt market sooo much. Joey asked if I was taking him and then got upset when I said “no!” too quickly. Apparently I’m supposed to pretend to think it over. I’m going to have to dig up an umbrella somewhere (it will be needed, mark my words).

  7. Heather, you were absolutely charming, and I appreciated all your enthusiasm–nothing to be embarrassed about! Can’t wait to see you again in Portland, and this time we’ll need to have dinner or do something else together while we’re there!
    xo, L

  8. No new fabric??? A BIG long wait until May?? As my 2-year old would say, “Oh Man!” Then what the heck was in all the boxes???? 🙂

  9. This shows how truly smart you are! I noticed your child in no shirt! I can just hear it now: take off the costume, then you can have all you want!

  10. These candy pics are adorable! Look at those peanut butter(?) hands. Just need some chocolate to dip those in. giggle.
We have St. Martin’s Day here on Thursday/Friday. The kids will come around and sing, and we’ll pass out the leftover Halloween candy. 🙂 I have eaten a few too many twix bars, so it is time for the rest to get sent on their way before they end up on my hips.
I was wondering the fabric–good luck getting everything done. Can’t wait to see the new prints. 🙂

  11. We have the Halloween Fairy at our house. Matthew gets to pick five favorite pieces, and then everything else is left under his bed so that the Halloween Fairy can come and take the candy and then leave a surprise. The candy then goes to live with the “Halloween Fairy” at his law school desk, where I imagine obscene amounts are consumed on a daily basis.

  12. You’re right, the place I was thinking of was Pix, not Cacao, but I couldn’t remember the name and it wasn’t coming up on my Google search. I’m going to go change that in the post! Thanks, beetlegirl : )

  13. Sounds like you had some much-desreved FUN in Houston. I haven’t been to “Market” for about 5 years now (quit my job)and am starting to miss it – especially since the Spring one will be in Portland, a great town. I went to two Spring Markets there. But I hope to be in Portland next July and have made a note of that CHOCOLATE place on my 2008 calendar!

  14. Do visit Pix! Two locations are within walking distance of my house – wonderfully dangerous.
I am a fan of your work, if you need a tour guide, let me know!

  15. she looks like she had a great time getting all gooey.
i also get really excited about things going on in my life…it doesnt bother me in the least reading someone else getting all excited.
    Like this….
I just finally got a few super cute pictures up of my newest design on my blog of the Giddy-Up skirt. If you get a second come take a peek!

  16. Hi Heather,
I enjoyed checking out your blog. I’m a recent grad in Silicon Valley, and I’ve just started a company that is mapping the blogosphere to our world. I noticed that your blog has great content and a good-sized readership, and it would be great to have you on the map. Here is an example of a blogger in Georgia who’s plugged in: http://www.verveearth.com/landing/#type=user&id=772. It can be fun to explore different localities.
It’s an easy process to get on board, and I can be reached at clayton@verveearth.com for questions or feedback. If you resonate with the vision of painting a global canvas of voices, please give VerveEarth a mention.
    Cheers! -Clayton

  17. Sounds like market was a blast!
My husband is a dentist, and did a candy buyback. Mine was out of here on Monday, mostly to keep ME from eating it!

  18. I like the Halloween Fairy! I might have to adopt that creature at our house … you see, we already have lots of fae folk lurking around here. Aside from teeth and sugar plums, they are most definitely responsible for ‘Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells’, as well as lost socks, burnt out lightbulbs, and crumbs in bed.
As my daughter is just over 4 months old, our Trick-or-Treating booty got donated to the breakroom table at Barnes & Noble where I work. Thankfully my fellow booksellers were more than happy to add a few inches to their hips and keep them away from mine!
What a lovely chocolatey mess she has made! Few things bring about a smile in me quicker than children with sticky faces.

  19. Hi Heather!! So fun meeting you in Houston. Next time I will make sure to look you gals up sooner, something’s telling me you guys are where the party is! xx

  20. I think I like your idea of after two days of candy – get rid of it! They might secretly be ready then. Rather than saving it forever and rationing it like it was valuable – ya know?

  21. EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Oh my word!!! I can seriously see Isaac’s influence on the candy gorge. That’s what we used to do. There were never any limits and we could just eat, eat, eat til we puked. I love the candy pics and I feel like I’m missing out on some serious Aunt time. So, I guess you’re coming out my way. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of your needs. Also, there are 3 Pix locations, and there are 3 other places everyone needs to check out in Portland: Bolt on Alberta, Alma Chocolates (esp their drinking choc) on NE 28th and Couch and Sahagun (Crazy crack chocolate) on NW 16th and Burnside. You could say I take my chocolate pretty seriously. Love, Moe

  23. Hey Heather,
I love it!!! That’s exactly how Isaac, Laura, George and I looked on Halloween. We never got our candy taken away and we ate it all day long till it was gone. Crazy! I’m so excited your coming to Portland. Are you bringing kids? I’d love to play Auntie Moe. Speaking of chocolate (nice segway), I’m all over that. I’ve got a few other places besides Pix to take you to. They’ll knock your socks off. Laura told me all about your good time. You’ve corrupted her for good.
    Love,
    Moe

  24. As one of the “one at a time, but make it also go away quicker than she realizes” types — I’m wondering if your method has benefits. ‘Cause — well, it jut looks like lots and lots of fun!
As for market and gushing — um, as a certified gusher, I hope that it comes across as enthusiastic and charming. Though, at times — I wonder if I just come across as psycho and a stalker. Hmmm…gush away, it shows you care!

  25. It IS fun! And strangely, neither of my kids has ever noticed when one day the candy buckets are just gone. I’ve never had to explain.
I’m not sure if that’s due to the employed candy-disbursement philosophy outlined above or just my particular kids. I’d love to see a scientific experiment done on this. Solve the mystery, you know?
