Back for one day. Now off to Los Angeles to meet with the _______
company to discuss a new collection of _______. I have several
meetings with other manufacturers & suppliers lined up for various
projects I’ll be designing in the coming year. I always love to visit
L.A. We lived in Hollywood for a number of years & I’m still
attached. Can’t wait to get a Martha dog at Pink’s!
Quilt Market was a fantastic whirlwind. Thank you to all of you
kind folks who stopped by for a Hello. Such a supportive &
charming industry to take part in. Lots of new fabric shops opening
up, lots of fresh energy for sewing, lots of excitement for my new
collections too. In fact, I have the coolest slideshow all ready for
you, but have to postpone another week or so, as I’m already a couple
hours late getting out the door.
Oh, and we’re getting a puppy next week! (Don’t tell my kids.) We
have our pick of a litter of 7 Miniature Schnauzers. Isaac made that
call. He researched which breeds were most hypo- allergenic (he gets
bad allergies) & super smart and of good temperment. I’m going
with the flow. We’ll most likely get a female, but I’m not sure yet.
Last time we visited them, they were still too small to see their
personalities very well. I’d love your take on names. She/He will be
grey & the breed is from Germany. Gretel? Bobbin? Griselda? I
definitely prefer a non-human name. And funny is good. I have a list
going somewhere.

We recently got a puppy as well. I was told by a life long dog owner that it is best to choose a name with two syllables with the second being a “hard” sound. Supposed to help with giving commands. Example – Buckley, Buddy, Cheecha, Rocky… none of which are German or funny, but just for reference. 🙂

I don’t have any real name suggestions, but you should preface any name with Herr or Fraulein. Actually I kind of like Fraulein all on it’s own. Though Fraulein Shnitzel has a nice ring to it. 🙂
We have a miniture schnauzer called Maizie – although she actually gets called Moo Moo!

My personal recommendation though is “Schnecken.” It means “snail” auf Deutsch, but it’s also a pastry…kind of a German sticky bun. It’s what we called Lola in utero, but it’ll work for a puppy too. 😉

I have a puppy named *Spot Noggin* He has a spot on the top of his head. I like the looks people give when you are yelling Spot Noggin.
If we were to get dogs (yes I said the plural because my husband thinks a dog should have a friend!), I have two sets of names picked out….Gargamel & Azrael (from the Smurfs) and Hansel & Gretel. My husband wants two Rottweiler pups. If my son was to have been a girl, I was going to name “her” Gretel since I’m of German heritage and then my husband is Polish and has a nice long Polish last name…it was going to be a mouthful, that’s for sure.
We had a Miniature Schnauzers when I was a child, and he was great! Not very barky, didn’t shed, and loved us kids. His name was Bogus, but we called him Bogie (not after the golf term).
I like the name Schnitzel… what a cute name! When we get a dog we are going to name him Stan, if it fits him. Don’t you think that would be funny to be at a park and yell, “Hey Stan! Over here!!!” and have a little dog come running.

For the dog name, I recommend “Fritz.” My sister had a mini schnauzer named Fritz and it fit so perfectly and he was a cutie pie.

I can’t stop laughing about Fraulein Schnitzel… that’s the best. But Pippi is pretty darn cute, too.
We had the most wonderful Miniature Schnauzer growing up – her name was Greta, and she was coal black. Whatever name you pick, you are getting a great little dog!
OH OH! you are going to love your new mini schnauzer. We have two and love both of them dearly. They are such great dogs. Perfect size, no shedding and smart (sometimes a little too much for their own good).
We got our first from a breeder (a female- Cloverdale Pesto) and our second we rescued (a male- Zucco Clyde). They are both so differnt but incredibly sweet and funny.
We have noticed that our female is a bit more dominant and can be a little spazzy around kids but our male is really easy going and has no problems with anyone. (We don’t have kids of our own quite yet, so I think this is why she is unsure).

I love thinking of dog names! How about…Paisley, Tweed, Tartan, Chintz, Taffeta, Crafty, Toile, Gingham, Linen, Plaid, Brocade, Lace, Battenburg, Eyelet, or along the Photography lines like Shutter, Kodak, Cannon, Clicker, (I’m sure your husband would be better to ask about Photography names)
How about Senta for a girl? Lead female role in Wagner’s Flying Dutchman. It’s not too girly, or human, for that matter.
I had to look up that hot dog, and wow that hot dog has a lot of toppings. L.A. is on my list of places to go, and Pink’s is on my list of places to eat.
Now on to the topic of new puppies. I grew up with Schnauzers, and love them. They are great dogs! We had both a male and a female. I would definately recommend the female. Our dogs were Max and Betsy. My brother now has a Schnauzer named Lily. But my favorite Schnauzer name is Mr. Bones. I loved that name.

For some reason my 6 year old daughter has named all of her pets ” Pot Roast”. We aren’t really sure why, but it is super cute when she goes around calling ” Pot Roast, where are you ?! ” We never know which one she is calling for !

As for a girl name – how about Casali – after one of my favorite German candies! Or Wilhelmina – Wilma or Mina for short 🙂

We got a miniature schnauzer in October (picked her up at the Rose Bowl Flea market of all places–shhh). She is the best–makes my heart melt. Her name is Etta Rose.

something about looking at that adorable puppy makes me think Twizzler also… for absolutely no good reason. Whoever said Fritz, I like that one too. You could also go the Audrey Hepburn route and call him Hund (dog in German). I also like Straße (pronounced like Stra-Fa sort of…) which means street. When I was in Germany last summer I got a kick out of how our GPS system couldn’t say it right… haha.
other ideas: Kleine Bär (little bear, as in ursa minor), Winzig (tiny I think) … unfortunately German doesn’t make as cute names as other languages… like Chien (dog in French) is really cute. Or Allemand (German in French – lol). And so are the crafty names someone suggested, like Tartan and Plaid.

I CAN’T BELIEVE you are thinking of naming your schnauzer Gretel! I was given a Schnauzer for Christmas when I was five and I SO wanted to name it Gretel (I loved Hansel & Gretel..) I guess my mother was not too thrilled with that name tho and somehow she ended up being Gigi. (more of a poodle name, I know..)
I loved Gigi.. used to walk her in Central Park and take her on the train to my grandparents farm in Westbrrok, CT..

Awwwww… schnauzer puppy! When my husband and I got married, we joked that my family’s schnauzer, Bentley, was part of the dowry and so I took him with me when I moved. Bentley was my little piece of home, a great friend, a good listener, and extremely smart “person in a fur coat”. You’ve made an excellent choice.
I am allergic to dogs to and the only time they bothered me around Bentley was when I would give him a bath and then blow dry his fur (can’t let a wet dog outside in -40 temps).
Personally, I like the name Bentley, but I’m a little biased.
Of course, for a girl schnauzer, Bentley won’t do… how about Pepper?

We adopted our min. schnauzer almost 7 years ago and he’s awesome. Very smart. Great with kids. Doesn’t really shed. Oh yeah… and his name is Otto. That was his name when we got him. We didn’t want to confuse the poor guy by changing it and we liked it anyway.

i think sound of music was set in switzerland, but it is just south of germany… so i think you should name IT one of the kids names… Liesl, Louisa, Friedrich, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, Gretl. my fave is gretl!!!!

My childhood dog (I have terrible allergies too) was a schnauzer named Rascal (he was anything but). Schnauzers to have a mind of their own – they are terriers after all!! I have a Maltese (terrier as well) and he is more difficult than Rascal, but still mindful.

I had a dog called Bobbin! An excellent name for a dog in my opinion.
He’s the size of a miniature too. A miniature horse 🙂 We had to give him to a family with a hobby sized farm so he had enough room to gallop around.

Why not give the dog a name from the Nordic pantheon (ie. odin, thor, etc.)

The smartest dog I’ve ever known was a schnauzer named Sophia of Bulgaria… Sophie for short. Sophie would go into the corner if you said, “Shame, Sophie. Shame.” She also answered the phone (if it were left on the floor) by growling into the receiver.

My husband and I are considering getting a Boston terrior, and we want to name him/her Rosco or Rusty. I personally love Russian names like Sasha and Yuri. If you want to go with a German name, you could do Autobahn, Heidi, Gretchen, Otto, Blitz or Fritz. If you google it, you can find all kinds of German dog names. How fun!! I can’t wait to get a puppy.

I own three dogs. Cocker Spaniel(Khalua), Maltese (Zsa Zsa), and Fonzi our Yorkie. Zsa Zsa gets so excited when I call her name. I would say…”Come here me ZSA ZSA” and she would bark uncontrollably. It is also easy for my 2 year old to say. GOOD LUCK and I adore you and your work.

just wanted to add that the breeder where we got our schnauzer said that she finds that the male dogs are more easy going and affectionate then her females…and our little guy lives up to that…he is just all about love, hugs and kisses!

how wonderful! i would suggest you look here for great info: http://amsc.us/ you did wonderful by looking at the akc for info on the breed. the parent club is affiliated to the akc. they always have tons of info about the breed, list of reputable breeders, etc (i personally would not purchase a dog from someone who is not a member of the parent club for their breed.) research will be your best friend when comes to buying a puppy. i own a show doberman pinscher and am member of the doberman pinscher club of america. anyway, more info that you wanted to know…LOL!!

I have a 1 yr. old Min. Schnauz named Abbie. VERY smart, very clean, very lovable (TO HER FAMILY) and very snobby to everyone else. Loyal to death! I agree with the other post~that first Schnauzer grooming was such a fun experience. We thought we had a totally new dog~cute and very velvety. I would go with the name Bobbin. It sings your line of work and is cute to boot. Your doggie decision is perfect, trust me! Oh, do go with the female. My sister in law has had bunches of both male and female, and much prefers the females.

Shooneeg (shoo-NEEG) — it basically means “doggy” in Armenian, and it’s kind of cute 🙂
I also like (and maybe some of these have been suggested already): Pepper, Barky (hee hee!!), Licorice, Twizzler, Stormy, Mushroom, Ashes, Smokey, Oreo, and Tweedy.

My great-aunt had a Schnauzer named Rufty, Rufty Eureka Barnsmell, but Rufty for short. He liked to roll in manure….. Can’t wait to see pictures of your ‘baby’!

aww, she is sweet. My mama is german, thus I got the name Sonja. Some names in my fam are Liesl, Hannalore (pronounced like Honna-lora), Anja (on-ya), Hilde(hil-dee).But you may just want to get her home and evaluate what fits her best.
It’s not a german name, but my favorite pet name is Guess. So then when people say, “What’s your dog’s name?” You can say “Guess!”

Oh, you really should read some Hairy Maclary books for some great dogs’ names (actually the puppy in the pic looks a lot like Hairy Maclary himself), like Schnitzel Von Crumb (with the very low tum), Bottomly Potts (all covered in spots), Hercules Morse (as big as a horse)….etc etc. You get the idea!! Good luck with it 🙂

I have two mini schnauzers (3 year old littermates) that are just fantastic. When I first got them I kept reading about their sense of humour and mishchieviousness, but didn’t really get it … but it is so true. They truly make me laugh so much with their good-willed spiritedness. They can totally be rambunctions with eachother and jump an dplay, but they settle right down and love to be cuddled. They are great with kids of all ages.
As for names, I really wanted their names to start with ‘S’and thought it would be great to say “Have you met my schnauzers Schnitzel and Schnoodle”, but in the end went with Sophie and Sebastian. I thought I wanted a German name (and we are German, so it wasn’t a stretch) but I just liked both of these names, and thought they suited eachother. As others have said, the nicknames really win out and Sophie is now mostly “Sophielein” (you can add the diminutive ‘lein’pronounced line, to any name to make it an endearment, and Sebastian is ‘Meister Proper’ (which is the German brand name for Mr. Clean but is literally translated to be Master Proper because he is sometimes such a snotty boy. I also really like Bismarck Bailey for your new addition – I think the full name has a good ring to it.
Boy or girl … whichever – pick the one that speaks to you no matter the sex.

we had a schnauzer. She definitely did not shed, though she was a little yappy. We called her Gretchen. (We went with the German theme, too) She had a set of puppies, a boy and a girl (she was the runt, so she just couldn’t fit too many in her womb, I guess) and we named them Hansel and Gretel. I do like the name Schnitzel, though, which I saw someone suggest earlier.

I like your idea about not using human names for your dog. The comment I hear most often when I introduce myself (besides, “Thats such an unusual name, is it a family name?”) is, “Oh! I have a dog named Greta!” Thanks people; I don’t mind you used that name for your dog, but you didn’t have to tell me.

We had a mini schnauzer for 13 years. Biff was his name. When he was so little, he often tripped on his own feet and “biffed” to the ground. Ended up being a great name – Biffster, Biffaroni, McBiffy, Biffinator (also a character from Back to the Future). . . Think you’d like your own Biff.
We have had schnauzers for years. They are very loyal to their family, One of my favorite names was for a mini we had and she was so small and petite we ended up calling her Itsy, she also had long eye lashes so it was fitting for her. You will be so happy with your choose in breed.(let your husband know I have bad allergy’s with other pets and have never had a problem with having these dogs in the house!)

That picture is just the cutest, had my daughter & I ahhhing for ages. I like not human names too. My dogs (both springer spaniels & both nutty) are called conker & walnut. I think bobbin is a great name, it’s 2 syllables which I understand dogs cope with better, it’s relevant tothe sewing and it’s sooo cute just like the pup!

Hi! Our first family doggy was a Mini Schnauzer. Our, Trixie, was a great dog. But, when she felt slighted, she got even. Such as when we had to leave one time and she ripped up my son’s glasses he left on the table – she did something like this a few times. Our vet said female dogs, like some female humans, get their noses out of joint. We were lucky, Trixie was not a ‘barking’ Schnauzer as Schnauzers usually do a lot. But, I would recommend the breed, but a male. We currently have two Cairn Terriers – male and female. The male, is more laid back and easy going, the female can be a little more challenging.

My aunt had one and her name was Dutchess. She was a great dog. She also had “SweetPea” and “JP” which stood for “Just Precious”. All of her Schnauzers were so sweet and great with kids. You will love it and so will your kids. Congratulations!

I had a miniature schnauzer that I got when I was 4 (MANY years ago!). We had him until his death during my freshman year in college. He was a salt & pepper cutie named “Frisky” which truly did match his personality 🙂

I was gonna suggest Schatzi (it makes me think of Chacci of Happy Days, even though it’s not pronounced the same way), but I guess that has been suggested a couple of times already. I also thought about Schnitzel which has been suggested, too (but then again, Schnitzel actually means ‘meat cutlet’ or something like that…).
Okay, now that I got to thinking about Happy Days, I’m gonna suggest Fonzie (or the Fonz!). Though it’s not German.

My pekingnese boy is named leonardo, but a different girl name would be Glitter Bug. I also had a black persian cat named Whodini we called her Who Do for short. I also like madeline. Good Luck with the new puppy. I do suggest to have about 3 names that you really like in mind. Then once you have the puppy in your home you’ll get a feel for which name suits her best.
Name it Biz!! 🙂 We have a grey/black miniature schnauzer named Bizmark. We call him “Biz, Bizzer, Mr. Bizzer, Bizzy”– “Biz” was also one of the first words our son said. Schnauzers have GREAT personalitites!! You’re going to LOVE having one!!! YAY!

How exciting!! We have a male mini schnauzer named Max and he is the smartest, sweetest dog I’ve ever owned. I always had large breed dogs before and I’ll never go back — no shedding & easy to bring along anywhere. We love our male — easier on the lawn and not as barky as Max’s two schnauzer girlfriends across the street. Each pup has their own personality though. Max is laid back and lets DD dress him up in all sorts of garb. I can see some fabulous new Fresh Cut doggie couture in futre blog photos!! Have fun, and enjoy your new family member! Oh, and I loved the ‘Schatzi’ suggestion, with the Fraulein bit… too cute.
We had two Schnauzers, assumed to be brother and sister, that were adopted from SPCA. They’re names were Hansel and Gretel so those names get my vote! They have both passed over the rainbow bridge but they WONDERFUL companions for over 13 years. You won’t regret choosing this breed. (By the way, the dog choose you!)

Hi Heather. I agree with Crystal, love the name Schnitzel. Please please please go with this one. We lived in Germany for 4 years while my DH was stationed there (Air Force) and Schnitzel was definitely a profound word there. My favorite schnitzel was one with a fried egg on top! LOL
I also wanted to let you know that I picked out my puppy from the litter when she was only 3 weeks old. I know they are so tiny and hard to pick out personalities, but my little one sucked a hicky on my chin as soon as I picked her up…..she was MINE!!!!

A boy and a girl- I like themes- for example I named my 3 yorkies after presidents: Lincoln (boy), Franklin Roosevelt (boy) and my girl is named Madison (after James Madison). So for a boy and girl, I’d go with Fred & Ginger, Franklin & Eleanor, Ricky & Lucy, Fred & Eithel, etc. I think you get the idea! Good luck-they are adorable!

Grew up with three mini schnauzers: Schatzi, Liebchen and Hansel. They are charming dogs – lots of energy but a little too high strung for me so I now have three West Highland White Terriers. Westies are a bit more mellow and less “vocal”… Good luck! Puppies are such fun!
