Holly Day Girls

I have a new 'job' at my church.  I've been asked to teach the
10-12-year-old girls crafting skills, and to organize service projects
with them.  Sure! I can do that.  Today is our first activity.  We're
making holly pins from yo-yos & felt.

the next few meet-ups, I'm going to help the girls put together their
own sewing kits, teach them to crochet, develop babysitting kits, learn
emergency skills etc.  I want to find a senior center we can visit as
well.

They're the sweetest group of girls.  It should be big, big fun.

  1. I have the same job for the 8-9 year old girls! I understand you being excited. I have wanted this job for years! With your girls being a little older, it will be even easier for them to do crafts. The craft you came up with is so cute.
Also, I have been interested in the How-to video for Trash ties. Ever since I ordered my first trash ties I have been interested in learning how to do the hair style of the girl with the dark hair who has one white long trash tie twisted through. I would love to figure it out for some holiday hair for my husbands work party.

  2. I just had that “job” also and then was called away to do the enrichment counselor job. I was just so sad! Boo hoo. Oh, how my daughter and I wish we could be in your little group. Those are some lucky girls!

  3. I would love it if you posted some of your ideas. I bet your sewing kit and babysitting kit will be awesome. I have the same job with the 9 year olds and I have an 11 year old that would love to add to both her sewing and babysitting kit. Also, can I join your group? I bet you’re going to do the funnest stuff!

  4. I have the same new “job” too. Crocheting is on our list for the new year too–hopefully for the Love Scarf Project (delivering scarves to a So Cal cancer center on Valentines Day). I want to do Babysitter training too (but that might be a self-serving activity. I want better babysitters!

  5. I have had this “job” for four years now and still love it but I am always looking for new ideas. Love the pins and would also like a tutorial.

  6. I agree, those are lucky girls! I’ve never made yo-yos, but heard they’re super simple…if I had more time I might make this cute pin!

  7. Oh my! Those are great! I am a girl scout leader (5 & 6 year olds and 9 – 11 year olds) and would LOVE to do these pins with my older girls. Could you please, pretty please, with a cherry on top, post a tutorial for the holly pins and maybe a listing of what you are putting into their sewing kits? Oh, did I say PLEASE?
    Thank you in advance…

  8. So cute. Love the holly. I might have to make one of those for myself. I teach a girls class (M-Pact Girls) at my church too. Mine are probably a tad too young for that craft, being they’re just in kindergarten, but I’ll be watching for some crafts that might be fun for my young ones.

  9. Lucky THEM. Maybe I can be 10 again and learn all those skills someone should have taught me! LOVE the new fabric.

  10. heck! I am wishing I was in your ward… we’re in gateway gardens.. stinks to live on the wrong side of the tracks!!
If you ever want to join our ward let me know.. I’ll act like a 10yr old just so i can get some creative tips.. I came from a family of ALL BOYS.. I have 8 brothers!!!
    I really need help!

  11. That is SO fun!! I would love to do something like that. Those are all wonderful life skills you will be teaching them. I think it is so great to teach them things that they can also develop into hobbies!! Go girl!!!

  12. Are you going to create the patterns from the pictures of the previous post showing your fabrics? They are beautiful. Please?

  13. that sounds like so much fun!
i pray that your first activity went awesome and that the girls are blessed in their time together and with you!

  14. I’d be interested in hearing all the things you do with your group. I just started something similiar and am eager for ideas!
    THose girls are incredibly lucky!!!
My first set of Nicey Janes came in yesterday, they are even better in person!!!

  15. How exciting for those lucky girls! I hope you blog all about it so we can read about what you get up to. I love that gorgeous holly brooch.
My daughter (who’s 9) has shown some interest in learning to sew, but she loses interest very easily and I’m not the most patient person in the world (patience is a virtue I was not blessed with). Anyway, I’ve decided to try and give her some sewing lessons over the Christmas Holidays.
I found a great book for kids wanting to learn how to quilt, it’s called “Kids can Quilt” by Dorothy Stapleton.
You obviously don’t need this book, but I thought I’d mention it for anyone else who follows your blog and might be looking for this sort of resource.
Look forward to visiting you again soon and reading all about your adventures in craft.
    Kelly 🙂

  16. Hey, maybe you could write a curriculum for your class and peddle it to others. I know homeschoolers would eat it up. I have 10 y.o. and 11 y.o. daughters who would love it.

  17. What an awesome ministry opportunity! Hope you’ll keep sharing your projects so others can replicate/ build on them!

  18. What fun! I occasionally get to do fun projects like that with the jr. high and high school girls at my church. We are a tote-luvin’ bunch. 🙂 So I’ve helped them learn some basic sewing skills and let them raid my stash from time to time. How wonderful to hear that you are willing to pour your time and attention to a new generation of crafters! They will be blessed by it, I’m sure…

  19. Wow those Achievement Day girls hit the jackpot with you as their teacher! Can I send my girl to your ward? lol! We did simple cushions with them a few weeks back and they loved it. That age is surprisingly clever! Have fun with the new calling!

  20. I have a group of that same age group over at my house once a month..we will definately be adding this to our list of stuff to do! We Make everything out of recycled stuff. A fabric store that carries your stuff donated some scraps, and we will be using it for these!
It’s so fulfilling to work with the tweenagers..giving them confidence that we ALL CAN CREATE, since we are part of the ultimate Creator. Thanks for your giving spirit, not just to those girls but to all of us in this community. So what can we do for you?:0

  21. I am laughing after reading through all the commnets. I can picture a rise in real estate in your ward boundries. I even want to move in. I would also love a tutorial on the pins and see your girls finished pins.

  22. It sounds like great fun! Lucky girls that get to go to you class!
But… you all seem so content at the fact that only girls will go. Do your boys not need to know babysitting and emergency skills? Not a single boy is interested in crafting? Are all the girls being trained to be homemakers and no boys need those skills?
Makes me a little bit sad, is all.

  23. I am so excited about your new laminated fabrics. Also, what you are doing with the youngs girls. I have a 9 year old that is always looking for craft projects to do with me , with her friends and alone. She can’t wait to use a sewing machine and asks me quite often when she can make some of the stuff I show her from your website.

  24. Elijah totally raided my girl group & made a holly pin. At our church, there’s a group for boys too, slightly more macho, but they learn some great skills, like CPR, building fires, etc. I’ll have to post Elijah’s first embroidery (a flaming skull) and his other boyish takes on handicrafts.

  25. I love that you are involved with the church and using crafts and art to influence young kids. I was a teacher for 5 years and it was such an amazing experience. Glad I found you on here! I look forward to seeing your new developments!

  26. What a perfect calling for you, and what lucky girls they are! I love the holly pin – it is, as everything else you do, perfectly quaint, cute and classy all at the same time.

  27. I wish I was 10 years old again and in your ward. That sounds amazing. I would love to get my fingers on some of your scraps of material. Your stuff is always on my wish list.

  28. When I was a young girl, my primary teacher taught me how to sew, cook and crochet. I was the only girl in my class. Back then (in the 50′) we learned how to cross stitch samplers. I still have those projects to this day and I am 60 years old. Your girls will never forget you Heather!

  29. Nice work! It is very good project for girls 10-12 years old, on my opinion. Crafting work can cultivate their creative nature and also it’s much fun and pleasure to make something by hands. I would like to have my daughter in such class:) You do a good job, good luck!

  30. Hey Heather, we were in your ward before we moved a few years ago. My young kids do homeschool…that would be cool to have some craft ideas from you that kids can do. Do you have any ideas for boys? My daughter of course would love everything that you make. I like to be crafty myself when I have the time. Congrats on all your successes and on enhancing so many people’s lives!

  31. This is perfect for me because I think I have those abilities I’d like to belong to that group because it seems very funny, some years ago I was in a group like that that’s perfect.
