I have a new 'job' at my church. I've been asked to teach the
10-12-year-old girls crafting skills, and to organize service projects
with them. Sure! I can do that. Today is our first activity. We're
making holly pins from yo-yos & felt.
Over
the next few meet-ups, I'm going to help the girls put together their
own sewing kits, teach them to crochet, develop babysitting kits, learn
emergency skills etc. I want to find a senior center we can visit as
well.
They're the sweetest group of girls. It should be big, big fun.

LOVE the pin. What a lucky bunch of girls! I wish my daughter was in your ward:).
My daughter’s name is Holly and she would love to make these- would you post a tutorial for the girls that aren’t in your group???
I am making those tonight with my three daughters. I love how cute they are.
Sounds like a lot of fun! That’s awesome you get to share your talent with girls at the church.
What a great idea and a lovely class!
I have the same job for the 8-9 year old girls! I understand you being excited. I have wanted this job for years! With your girls being a little older, it will be even easier for them to do crafts. The craft you came up with is so cute.
Also, I have been interested in the How-to video for Trash ties. Ever since I ordered my first trash ties I have been interested in learning how to do the hair style of the girl with the dark hair who has one white long trash tie twisted through. I would love to figure it out for some holiday hair for my husbands work party.
I just had that “job” also and then was called away to do the enrichment counselor job. I was just so sad! Boo hoo. Oh, how my daughter and I wish we could be in your little group. Those are some lucky girls!
what lucky girls! I would have loved to do something like that when I was at school.
Those girls don’t realize how lucky they are to have you! Love the pins.
Lucky girls!! I’m the RSP — will you come to Boston and show us how to make a few things?!?
Oh what a fun time you will all have! The girls that age are always so eager to learn, it makes it even more fun working with them!
Gorgeous!
I have the same calling, there is no way to relate how LOUD they can be. it’s ridiculous.
Those are so adorable! I think I may have to make a few for the girls at the office. It never ceases to amaze me how creative you are.
Ahhhh Activity Days…I’m
guessing. Did not know you were LDS. Coolio.
I would love it if you posted some of your ideas. I bet your sewing kit and babysitting kit will be awesome. I have the same job with the 9 year olds and I have an 11 year old that would love to add to both her sewing and babysitting kit. Also, can I join your group? I bet you’re going to do the funnest stuff!
I wish I was in your group… but I’m 27. 🙁 Will you post a tutorial so we can make some too? You are SO talented!!
I have the same new “job” too. Crocheting is on our list for the new year too–hopefully for the Love Scarf Project (delivering scarves to a So Cal cancer center on Valentines Day). I want to do Babysitter training too (but that might be a self-serving activity. I want better babysitters!
I have had this “job” for four years now and still love it but I am always looking for new ideas. Love the pins and would also like a tutorial.
Oh man! What a fun job! It would have been so fun for someone like you to teach me stuff like that when I was growing up. What a great idea!
I too enjoyed the “craft” time as sunday school teacher! Have a great time!
very cute heather! i’ve been wanting to make a yo yo garland for the holidays so this is a perfect excuse.
I agree, those are lucky girls! I’ve never made yo-yos, but heard they’re super simple…if I had more time I might make this cute pin!
Am I too old? I want to learn to crochet 🙂 Oh those girls are in for a treat to have you as their teacher!!
oh I bet you are perfect for that calling! Those lucky lucky girls- you all are going to have so much fun!!
Oh my! Those are great! I am a girl scout leader (5 & 6 year olds and 9 – 11 year olds) and would LOVE to do these pins with my older girls. Could you please, pretty please, with a cherry on top, post a tutorial for the holly pins and maybe a listing of what you are putting into their sewing kits? Oh, did I say PLEASE?
Thank you in advance…
So cute. Love the holly. I might have to make one of those for myself. I teach a girls class (M-Pact Girls) at my church too. Mine are probably a tad too young for that craft, being they’re just in kindergarten, but I’ll be watching for some crafts that might be fun for my young ones.
{sigh.}
I would LOVE that calling!
Don’t we always want the callings we don’t have?
🙂
Lucky THEM. Maybe I can be 10 again and learn all those skills someone should have taught me! LOVE the new fabric.
Oh, I loved teaching that age group. They were so much fun. That pin is adorable. Boy, are they going to love you. 🙂
Those are darling pins! Those girls will be truly blessed to have a leader like you in their lives. They won’t know how lucky they are, I’m sure. Have fun!
heck! I am wishing I was in your ward… we’re in gateway gardens.. stinks to live on the wrong side of the tracks!!
If you ever want to join our ward let me know.. I’ll act like a 10yr old just so i can get some creative tips.. I came from a family of ALL BOYS.. I have 8 brothers!!!
I really need help!
That is SO fun!! I would love to do something like that. Those are all wonderful life skills you will be teaching them. I think it is so great to teach them things that they can also develop into hobbies!! Go girl!!!
Wow, what a lucky bunch of girls! What would you put in a babysitting kit? Just wondering!
Are you going to create the patterns from the pictures of the previous post showing your fabrics? They are beautiful. Please?
Waaaaa! Why can’t you be our Activity Day leader? I have two daughters that age and they love sewing and crafting.
You have to be the best Achievement Day leader ever! Wishing I was 10-12…
So fun! Wishing my daughter was in your group, too.
I want to learn to crochet! I wish I could be in the craft group!
So cute…what a lucky, lucky group of girls!!!
Man I wish my daughter was in your activity days group!!
Lucky girls! I would love to be 10-12 years old and be at your church! Keep up the good work!
that sounds like so much fun!
i pray that your first activity went awesome and that the girls are blessed in their time together and with you!
looks like so much fun. lucky girls.
I’d be interested in hearing all the things you do with your group. I just started something similiar and am eager for ideas!
THose girls are incredibly lucky!!!
My first set of Nicey Janes came in yesterday, they are even better in person!!!
I’m very impressed with the generosity of your time. thank you
How exciting for those lucky girls! I hope you blog all about it so we can read about what you get up to. I love that gorgeous holly brooch.
My daughter (who’s 9) has shown some interest in learning to sew, but she loses interest very easily and I’m not the most patient person in the world (patience is a virtue I was not blessed with). Anyway, I’ve decided to try and give her some sewing lessons over the Christmas Holidays.
I found a great book for kids wanting to learn how to quilt, it’s called “Kids can Quilt” by Dorothy Stapleton.
You obviously don’t need this book, but I thought I’d mention it for anyone else who follows your blog and might be looking for this sort of resource.
Look forward to visiting you again soon and reading all about your adventures in craft.
Kelly 🙂
Hey, maybe you could write a curriculum for your class and peddle it to others. I know homeschoolers would eat it up. I have 10 y.o. and 11 y.o. daughters who would love it.
What an awesome ministry opportunity! Hope you’ll keep sharing your projects so others can replicate/ build on them!
If I lived where you lived I’d want to join the group. It sounds like so much fun and such good skills to learn.
What fun! I occasionally get to do fun projects like that with the jr. high and high school girls at my church. We are a tote-luvin’ bunch. 🙂 So I’ve helped them learn some basic sewing skills and let them raid my stash from time to time. How wonderful to hear that you are willing to pour your time and attention to a new generation of crafters! They will be blessed by it, I’m sure…
Lucky girls!
This is awesome. I’m jealous.
That was one of my favorite callings. And then I got called as the Primary President – ack! You are going to have lots of fun 🙂
Wow those Achievement Day girls hit the jackpot with you as their teacher! Can I send my girl to your ward? lol! We did simple cushions with them a few weeks back and they loved it. That age is surprisingly clever! Have fun with the new calling!
How generous of you! I’m sure the girls will have a great time learning new skills with you!
And I absolutely love the holly pin!
I wish we lived there so my daughter could be in your group! She would love it! (although she loves the one she is in here too)
Totally awesome of you with your busy schedule to take the time for teaching those girls! Very inspiring!!
That sounds like a lovely job!
I have a group of that same age group over at my house once a month..we will definately be adding this to our list of stuff to do! We Make everything out of recycled stuff. A fabric store that carries your stuff donated some scraps, and we will be using it for these!
It’s so fulfilling to work with the tweenagers..giving them confidence that we ALL CAN CREATE, since we are part of the ultimate Creator. Thanks for your giving spirit, not just to those girls but to all of us in this community. So what can we do for you?:0

That’s a wonderful idea. I’m sure the girls just love it!
I am laughing after reading through all the commnets. I can picture a rise in real estate in your ward boundries. I even want to move in. I would also love a tutorial on the pins and see your girls finished pins.
It sounds like great fun! Lucky girls that get to go to you class!
But… you all seem so content at the fact that only girls will go. Do your boys not need to know babysitting and emergency skills? Not a single boy is interested in crafting? Are all the girls being trained to be homemakers and no boys need those skills?
Makes me a little bit sad, is all.
awwww I’m moving to your church and turning 10 again! those lucky little ladies!
Corrie:)
I am so excited about your new laminated fabrics. Also, what you are doing with the youngs girls. I have a 9 year old that is always looking for craft projects to do with me , with her friends and alone. She can’t wait to use a sewing machine and asks me quite often when she can make some of the stuff I show her from your website.
Elijah totally raided my girl group & made a holly pin. At our church, there’s a group for boys too, slightly more macho, but they learn some great skills, like CPR, building fires, etc. I’ll have to post Elijah’s first embroidery (a flaming skull) and his other boyish takes on handicrafts.
How fun! I teach Sunday school too, and we do some crafting and they love it! I’ll have to try these cute holly pins! 🙂
What lucky girls. Maybe I’ll see if I can transfer my girls membership records to where you live!
I love that you are involved with the church and using crafts and art to influence young kids. I was a teacher for 5 years and it was such an amazing experience. Glad I found you on here! I look forward to seeing your new developments!
What a perfect calling for you, and what lucky girls they are! I love the holly pin – it is, as everything else you do, perfectly quaint, cute and classy all at the same time.
lucky them and cheers to you for sharing your amazing talent!
I wish I was 10 years old again and in your ward. That sounds amazing. I would love to get my fingers on some of your scraps of material. Your stuff is always on my wish list.
I daresay, those holly yo-yo pins need to be a kit in your store. Adorableness!
When I was a young girl, my primary teacher taught me how to sew, cook and crochet. I was the only girl in my class. Back then (in the 50′) we learned how to cross stitch samplers. I still have those projects to this day and I am 60 years old. Your girls will never forget you Heather!
Nice work! It is very good project for girls 10-12 years old, on my opinion. Crafting work can cultivate their creative nature and also it’s much fun and pleasure to make something by hands. I would like to have my daughter in such class:) You do a good job, good luck!
Oh man! What a fun job! It would have been so fun for someone like you to teach me stuff like that when I was growing up. What a great idea!
Hey Heather, we were in your ward before we moved a few years ago. My young kids do homeschool…that would be cool to have some craft ideas from you that kids can do. Do you have any ideas for boys? My daughter of course would love everything that you make. I like to be crafty myself when I have the time. Congrats on all your successes and on enhancing so many people’s lives!
pizza seattle
Looks like a great time!
really nice for the girls…
This is perfect for me because I think I have those abilities I’d like to belong to that group because it seems very funny, some years ago I was in a group like that that’s perfect.
The stuff is really attractive. Love that featured above. Looking forward for more regarding this.
oh , my god.
