Smarty New Year!

SmartyShot

I'm moving my business
into a new office/warehouse space. We have a few walls to build and a
couple of rooms to paint, then the big haul begins. The plump, juicy
cherry-on-top is that my craft-night fantasy may soon become reality —
regular thread-covered, music-filled, sugar-enhanced soirees.
And with the larger studio space, we may be able to convince my
fabulous mother to teach sewing lessons in the evening. The Phoenix
area needs more craft socials, if you ask me. (I'm not opening a retail store, just expanding my space.)

CuttoutSmartyIt
will take a few weeks to get settled and adapt to the new digs. Let me
know if you're in the area &/or know anyone who may be interested
in 'knowing their sewing.' I'll start buttering-up my mom. She's an
amazing teacher, and she knows her stuff.

I'm working on a new, free tutorial to post online as well. And
there is another new mini pattern on the way, and four new premium
patterns, and several secret projects — busy, busy new year. What are
your new projects/goals for the new year? I wish I could commit to the
traditional goal of increased exercise and vegetable intake, but I'm in
no position to take that on this month. Maybe next month.

Also!  I need the winners from last month's giveaway to email me their contact info so I can hand out prizes: Heather@HELLOmynameisHeather.com.

  1. Darn it! I wish I lived in Phoenix! I’m pretty much on the other side of the country! CAN NOT WAIT to see your new patterns!! 🙂

  2. so fun! good luck getting your new work space set up! a craft social would be so cool- i wish there were more sewing/craft outlets here in the DC area!

  3. I so wish I lived in your area. Boy could I use your mother’s help! I’m new to sewing. I love your blogs and all of your products. You’re amazing! 🙂 I made the square deal pincushion today and it is so pretty. Thanks! Can’t wait to see all the new patterns. My New Years goals include learning to sew, learning hand embroidery, and learning more about knitting.

  4. I almost bought some of your fabric off etsy last night. I think I must do it here as I can get all the ones I want all from you. I love them all and wish I dared to buy wholesale and have a fabric shop just so I could have all the fabric right at my fingertips.
I also think it would be great to live in Phoenix so I could randomly bump into you and learn even more. Happy New Year!

  5. That clinches it for me! I’m going to move to Phoenix 🙂 Congrats on the big move Heather!! I’ll be sure to come down and visit your new digs.

  6. Ah, I wish I lived in Phoenix… When I opened your blog today I blinked twice at your first photo- I have that same book, Simple Story Book, on display in my glass-topped coffee table! What are the odds?

  7. From the amount of fabric I’m discovering as I clean my sewing room for my move to a bigger space (into the basement) I think I could really use a warehouse too! Love the crafty soiree idea!

  8. Wow, just moved from PHX a few months too soon! What a bummer! I’m sure your space will be a hit no matter what you do!

  9. Wow! Okay, I live in Surprise AZ and I would definitely drive to Phoenix to take sewing classes. Pretty please, tell mum to share her genius talent. I’m a beginner… how fun. Congratulation on the move!

  10. Oh wow! I’d love to have a crafty haven! I’m in Nova Scotia so not likely I’ll be able to make it…but if you ever do a crafty weekend event…I’ve never been to Phoenix…I could use a road trip 🙂

  11. How funny… I was just looking into sewing lessons earlier today. I’d be oh so interested in taking a class from your mom. Keep us updated! And best of luck with the move.

  12. I live in Scottsdale and completely agree…we need more crafty social goodness in the PHX area!! And, I would LOVE to take sewing lessons so I could actually make myself something with your wonderful fabrics aside from Yo-Yos 🙂

  13. I ordered the Smarty Girl pattern on the last sale…LOVE IT! It’s soooo cute, so easy! So FAST!
This is the second time I’ve missed out on a free pattern, due to having just ordered it. But that’s OK, the patterns are so worth it! The patterns, the fabrics…heavenly!

  14. Sigh…how I wish we still lived in Phoenix. Maybe Uncle Sam will move us back there someday!!! I loved our 3 years there and would move back to the heat in a heartbeat!!!

  15. I am so pumped on being a Phoenician right now! Give me your Mom’s number, I have a way with talking moms into doing anything, just ask my mom.
p.s. I am making my crib bedding out of your Nicey Jane collection and my mom and I were almost in tears looking at all the fabric we were so excited!

  16. I’m in the Phx area and I heartily agree! We need more social crafting! I also have a co-worker who recently asked me where she could go to learn to sew! So if your mom decides to start sewing lessons, I will definitely point my friend your direction!

  17. I LOVE the Nicey Jane fabric (just like everyone else, and I just ordered a bunch of goooorgeous lemon/blue prints from your store. I can’t wait to get started making something with these!!
Although when I went to apply the SmartyNewYear discount to my order, it wouldn’t work. I don’t mind that much since I mostly only quilt and rarely do anything other than home decor/bedding (ie duvets, pillows, curtains etc) so not a big deal, and who knows, I might have been doing it wrong, but just thought I’d say something in case its a technically difficulty!

  18. Being “Smart” never looked so good! I have already placed my order and I am waiting on the goodies to arrive. It’s an early birthday present to myself (sshhhhhh!) I have also posted a little promo. about your giveaway on my blog http://elizaandcamille.blogspot.com/
Congratulations on your new space, fabric line (Nicey Jane) and the other goodies that you have waiting to share. Oh, I wish I lived closer to you. I would LOVE to see the new space/studio and enjoy some crafting time with you, your mother and other creative ladies. Sew a stitch for me, will ya!
I’m wishing you a bright and blessed new year!

  19. I think a sewing class would rock! I would love to learn how to read a pattern, set up the machine & actually sew… what a concept!
I’ve got several friends that would love to learn how to sew, properly!
The problem I’ve found with the crafty places is that the prices are not reasonable! I know time is valuable, but if you are looking to really reach out to the community & teach a skill, then the prices need to come down compared to the 2 stores in Mesa I’m thinking of specifically! 🙂
Prime example, there is a class I’m looking at it’s $18 plus material & the pattern for a bag, plus the machine rental (don’t know the price on that one yet), I can buy a bag I would be just as happy with on Etsy for less than that! Now I know I don’t have the satisfaction of making it myself, but let’s all be real here, very few people have “Extra” money to toss around for crafty things!
That’s just my take on it, but seriously I would love to come craft & sew!

  20. Oh Heather, how much I would love to sharpen my sewing skills and connect with like minded crafty people. I’m in Ahwatukee, keep us posted! Sarah

  21. I’m here for the winter, so get it going…I’m there!! My gal pals come down for a tour every spring, so maybe it would work for them too!! What a fun time!

  22. If only I lived in Phoenix! I have a brand new sewing machine that has yet to be used! I actually got a cruiser bike for christmas with a basket very similar to yours! I am anxiously waiting for your laminate fabrics to come out so that I can make my own basket liner! I love yours and was wondering if you used a pattern or just came up with it on your own?

  23. If the code isn’t working for you, it is likely that you have less than a $15 purchase in your cart. (Cart needs to temporarily have $23.95 or more as the total once pattern is added to cart, but before promo code is entered. Once $8.95 is subtracted from cart, the total purchase will be $15+). If you need further help, email customerservice@HeatherBaileyStore.com and Emily or Lindsay will be glad to help you out.
The code is in proper, working order though. I double-checked. Thanks for the heads-up.

  24. My goal for 2010 is to only give handmade (by me of course!) gifts for the entire year ~ even if it means late gifts. “Henrietta Turtle” is on my list of favorites ~ so many of my friends sew!
PS – I would also love to see a pattern for the bike basket!

  25. please count me in for any craft/sewing socials and possible sewing lessons from your mom. I live in the Phoenix area and believe we don’t have enough opportunities but would happily support one..

  26. I found your site one day while looking for modern fabrics. I love all of your bright colors and patterns. My Grandmother taught me the basics of sewing when I was about 9-10. I loved it but didn’t have many resources to do it very often. I am now 25 years old and my husband bought me a sewing machine for Christmas this year. And my grandmother also gave me some money to buy some good scissors and must have notions. I was so excited. I’ve being doing small things like heming and patching holes and making button holes. I just ordered the fresh picked pattern and one of the kits for the pear pin cushion. I literlly can not wait to get it in the mail. I almost can’t sleep at night in anticipation. I also printed off the square pin cushion pattern to hold me over until I recieve my ordered. I’m going to try the square pin cushion this weekend! I love your store and your blog I check it often. I showed it to my Sister in law and she loves your fabric especially your felts. She makes lots of flower brooches and baby headbands. Thank you so much for your blog and your store you are so very creative and I get excited everytime I open up your site.

  27. You are so inspiring! I love checking out your blog and seeing what new you have going on. Wish I lived closer…good luck with your move!

  28. All I want to say is that I love your work. You are amazing and inspiring and oh how I wish I lived in the Phoenix area to take a few sewing lessons from your mother. The book bag is adorable, as are all of the other wonderful little things you’ve posted recently.

  29. oh my gosh, I’d be all over a crafty social night at your new studio! how fun would that be. I have a group of scrappy/crafty friends here in Phx that I’m sure would love to play too. How fun would that be?

  30. Are you kidding me? I live in the West Valley but would be more then happy to make the drive for sewing night. So fun!

  31. I hope you have an easy move and it becomes such a happy place for you!!! After seeing your studio, I know it will be light-filled and sweet! Thanks for scattering joy. What am I working on? My faerytale books, I did a review for a great book for Holt and next week I get to travel to my favorite place The Clearing and get some interviews and hopefully beautiful shots for an article for the Divine Ms. Doh. I love visiting here and it lights me up. Take care angel girl! Blessings.

  32. I’m with you on the too-busy-for-normal-resolutions list. This is the month I finally finish editing my novel (almost done!), finish resizing patterns for my spring line, and maybe pack up the Christmas decorations.

    Good luck convincing your Mom!
