Specters & Sparkles

My feet!  They are trotting along beneath me now, where they belong.
What a feat it has been to catch up on things after a couple of months
of scattered-ant-hill syndrome.  I'm nearly there.  Just a few more
photos for a book contribution, and one more design for my next fabric
collection (of course, it's the most complicated of the prints and might
take a week or two to finish).  Then it's back on schedule.  Glorious.

Perhaps
even ahead of schedule soon, as we now have an on-staff seamstress to
help bring my designs to life, moving pattern-development and
sample-making along.  I tell you what, it sure takes a mighty amount of
focus to do some of my less-fun work (accounting, payroll, etc.) when
there's a flurry of sewing going on in the other room.  But great!  I'll
introduce you to Tamara in my next newsletter.  And Nica too, my new
Studio Assistant.

So, isn't my new Marlo Bloom handbag adorable in Nicey Jane?  I feel sparkly
when I'm toting a tangerine handbag around — even when wearing pjs to
the grocery store, as I tested out last night.  I'm loving the vintage,
khaki button on the flower too.  Nothing like a touch of ugly to pretty
up a project.

The school year is hovering.  It floats over my
shoulder, just beyond sight, and teases me, "Just a few weeks more and
your little girl will be grown."  Now, of course, this isn't true.  But I
am taunted nevertheless.

MarloBloomBag_HeatherBailey_4a I'm still deciding
which school to send Charlotte to.  We're down to three choices — and there
are just about three weeks to decide.  There's the school close to our
home — the easy option.  The highly-recommended charter school — C is
near the top on the waiting list.  And then a good, solid school in
Elijah's same school district — great district, but that's about all I
know on this one.

It's going to have to be a last-minute
decision, as I still have my fingers crossed on the charter school.
Perhaps my school specter will go whisper a message to the
school's administration, "Red rover, red rover, let Charlotte come
over."

  1. Love the bag! I need to get my hands on the pattern!
Which charter school are you looking at? I know I live somewhere near you… My kiddos go to Benjamin Franklin Charter School and we love it!

  2. I was very moved to read “nothing like a touch of ugly to pretty up a project.” How very true, and well said. I just found your blog and was inspired by the craft, but now am inspired by your writing as well.

  3. I can’t believe how big those kids are getting. It just about kills me. We would love to see you. It’s been too long!!! We’re a little nuts up in the NW, but your fantastic blog perks me up. Hope you’re well

  4. I’m loving that bag! I think it’s meant just for me as my middle name is Marlo!! Wouldn’t you agree?
Good luck with the school stuff! I’m not ready for back to school yet, so that’s all I’ve got to say about that. 🙂

  5. What an adorable handbag! Is it very hard to make? I am not too skilled on the sewing- just basics. I would like to get the pattern but just not sure if I could do it!

  6. Here’s to hoping Charlotte gets the charter school!
Love, love, love the bag…and am so happy you’ve updated.
I can’t wait to see all you have in store for us!
Showed off your Nicey Jane’s in a Summer Studio tour, its my next quilt which will be raffled off for a dear friend who’s daughter was just diagnosed with a terminal cancer. Your Nicey Jane’s are sure to be a day brightner!

  7. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one who runs to the store in my pj’s.
Wow, 3 weeks until school. Summer is slipping away.

  8. Very cute bag indeed. My 5 year old daughter is starting kindergarten and it is bittersweet for me. She is excited and ready. I am just not use to the idea of sending her off from 8am-3:00pm. It seems like a lot for a kindergartner.
Good luck on the charter school.

  9. Hope you have a good time out on the town tonight, C & E had fun swimming. I miss your blogs when you get so wrapped up in work that you don’t have time to blog. Elijah and Granny are making strawberry pretzel dessert. Yum! I had an idea looking at you wonderful elephants and seeing the symbol of the Grand Ole Party, painted pink. Offer a pink elephant kit with one of your pink fabrics for the Republicans and for just a little more democrats can get the same kit with a sheaf of pins.
    Love Dad

  11. Beautiful! I love the khaki button. I think it makes a bright and colorful bag look elegant. With your pretty and vibrant fabrics, a bright or funky button might have been over the top.

  12. I love the bag. I don’t make them – I can’t seem to figure them out-I’m bag-making challenged for some reason. However, my friends make them and that pattern will make a great gift! Good luck with the school decision – it’s only the first. Wait until she decides to go to college…then the fun begins! I’m so glad my son made the grad school decisions and told me about them afterward.

  13. Oh, i hope you’ll get Charlotte into the best school for her! It really isn’t easy, is it??
We were so lucky with my son. There were 78 applicants for his school (it’s a small school of about 120 children) and only 16 got it. Yes, we were one of the 16!! Yay!

  14. what a neat thing to say – throwing something ugly in to pretty up a project. I’m going to have to remember that! Maybe it is better not to have everything be too super cute and perfect!

  15. much to comment on, sweet bag, the cutie kindergartener, your lovely fabric. but having been a bookkeeper/business owner for 28 years I would really say, huck the deskwork over to the best accountant you can afford and go back to the fun of sewing. I truly mean that, Hello My Name is Heather.
ps finally got my first piece of your wonderful fabric and I’m savoring it!
