Pinch Me

GreenBoots

I have big news.  And that news is growing bigger every day — requiring a wardrobe overhaul every 3 weeks it seems.

I’m having a baby!

A little boy.  And he’s coming in August, so I don’t have much more time for this news to soak in.  Perhaps announcing him to the world will help dispel my disbelief.  Like one big pinch.

I only just told my kids a couple of weeks ago and my family found out on Mother’s Day.  I’ve known for quite a while, but was amused by the idea of everyone else enjoying a rather short wait from May till August.  At least, that’s the simplified version of things — the version that skips over waiting to see that the pregnancy was going to stick well into the second trimester.

I’ve never had an easy time getting pregnant and I haven’t always had the best of luck in having a pregnancy keep past 14 weeks or so, hence the crazy-big age gaps between my children. (There are 8 years between Elijah and Charlotte, and nearly 7 years between Charlotte and this baby.)

But this guy was a complete surprise — ergo my disbelief.  In fact, the week I got pregnant was the same week I got rid of all of my baby gear — all but the girl clothes — and only because I ran out of time.  So long stroller, so long swing, so long car seats, so long toys, clothes — everything.  Ah, Murphy’s Law.  Not that there are a whole lot of Elijah’s baby clothes that I’m wishing I had back — 15 years was a long time ago.

So guess who gets to go shopping!  And soak every step of this up like a thirsty sponge.

  12. This post makes me smile. Congratulations! While I type, I’m sitting here holding my 3 week old little boy who was also a happy surprise after giving away all of my little boy things. Surprise babies are just the nicest! I’m very happy for you.

  13. …had to laugh, same thing happened to me, but my age gap was 14 years between my two youngest sons, now all i tell someone who is having a hard time getting pregnant after having a child, ‘you have to sale everything, don’t keep anything’ they always think that is crazy talk, but see, i can point to you as another confirmation of my belief. Congratulations on your littlest unexpected blessing!

  14. Such wonderful news. I have had the same thing happen to me. We got rid of all the baby stuff…and surprise! Our surprise has been the greatest blessing. Enjoy all the shopping. There are so many wonderful boy things available that were not when my sons were small.

  15. Congratulations! (And for sure don’t fret the donated baby equipment. The advances they make on that stuff in a few years, let alone 7, will be worth their weight in gold. Happy shopping too!)

  16. Congrats on your exciting news. The photo of the green boots is perfectly adorable (and such vibrant color as usual).
As far as your kids’ age gap? Just think, you and your hubby will never have to pay for two kids in college at the same time.

  17. When you said you had big news, this was the first thing I thought about. But then you wrote your post about the signature styles book and thought I was wrong. Congrats to you! Very exciting news, indeed!

  18. Now that was a complete surprise! I just saw you a couple of weeks ago and I would not have guessed! Congratulations to you and your family, Heather. And so pleased he is a sticky one…I certainly know all about that particular roller coaster! xx sus

  19. Congratulations! I gave away all my girl clothes to a friend the day before I discovered I was pregnant with my third child and waited to find out she was a girl. I did get the clothes back in time (and the friend then went on to have 3 more girls lol)

  20. I’ll add my voice to the congratulation chorus!!
We have 3 kids and it’s a great number! Mine are 6 years apart, which was not intentional … we did not have an easy time getting or staying pregnant either..
What a wonderful surprise for your family!! Best wishes on a healthy pregnancy.

  21. CONGRATULATIONS!! A baby is always wonderful news! I too got rid of all my baby stuff, I mean all, after my 3rd child, then came my 4th 6 years later, then I got rid of ALL the baby stuff again! then came a huge 5th surprise 5 years later!! So I decided to keep some stuff…to fight against murphy’s law.

  22. Congratulations! I’m due in mid Sept so I am sure everything will go well for you and your family! Exciting news!

  23. Wonderful news! Yay for that little guy sticking around. A friend of mine has had a rough time staying pregnant as well, but thankfully, found out the cause and is awaiting baby #2. Baby #1 was a complete miracle.
I’m happy for you and your little miracle.

  24. Congratulations, you will all enjoy him very much. My brother was born when I was almost 17 and my sister just before I turned 18. We loved them both so very much. Mom always said they had 3 mothers…her, my sister and me.

  25. Congratulations! That is always the best news. I have goosebumps! I have four children and they are somewhat stretched out – 18, 16, 8, and 5. I call them my set of book ends! Best Wishes!

  26. The absolute bestest of the best news!!!! Much congratulations, and I hope time allows you to photo and share your shopping fun finds!!

  27. How exciting!! That was my hunch when you eluded to big news a couple posts ago 🙂 I just recently found out that I’m pregnant with my second baby after doctors gave us a less than 1% chance of conceiving on our own (our first was via IVF). Yay for miracles!

  28. Congratulations! I also have had a hard time getting pregnant and staying pregnant. Big hugs to you. And happy pregnancy! Enjoy!
    Design some boy fabric!!

  29. Congratulations Heather! We did the same – got rid of all baby gear just before we found out we were having number 2! Enjoy the shopping and hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well.

  30. This is such wonderful news Heather! I’m having a boy within 6 days!! Those are the cutest boots ever and I can’t wait to see what you make.

  31. Ah, forget the old baby stuff. The new stuff out there right now is So Much Better! Yay to shopping for a baby again. Wish I was. Today I met a new baby that my friend adopted and all I wished was that I had a new one. This is after completely feeling good about not having any more babies. They really do mess with you. In a great way!
Be sure to buy a Bumbo seat. They rock! Baby can sit and chomp on toys while you sew and you can stare at each other. 🙂

  32. Must be the magic number. I tried 7 years for my first and 6 1/2 for my second. I too had given away everything shortly before I found out I was pregnant. LOL!
    Congratulations!

  33. I just so happen to think that you actually GET pregnant by holding a garage sale wherein you get rid of all baby stuff… Congratulations, mama.

  34. Congratulations! I just had a miscarriage last month and know how crappy it is to lose a baby. I can’t believe you were able to hide your belly this long. YAY 🙂

  35. Oh! So touching that you had this wonderful “blessing” news and it was a secret for so long! So happy for you – a baby, a new life – A NEW LIFE in this world!? nothing [ever] better. xoxo

  36. Wow, congratulations, this is just beautiful news! Your little girl will be sandwiched between two brothers! I bet both of your older kids will be thrilled to have a baby brother; I always wanted one myself!
Cannot wait to hear more and hopefully see pics of the new bambino!
    Best,
    Kimberly

  37. Congrats! 12 years between my 2…and I didn’t figure it out until I was 20 weeks!!! Have fun-it will be great!

  38. A summer baby, big congrats to you and all your family. May he bring lots of joy to your house. With much love Amanda xxx

  39. In the olden days (like before 1960), ALL babies were pretty much surprises. My own 70’s kids were “planned”, more or less, but at least the sex of each was still a surprise! I think it is nice to re-claim a real sense of wonder at the gift of life. Congratulations!

  40. Congratulations Heather and family! I’m expecting Aug. as well. I have a 14yr old girl and a 10yr old son. I’m right along with you and can’t wait to buy all new things!

  41. followed a blog trail over and eve though I dont Follow you I am so thrilled for you! Back when I was having little ones my mother in law would tell me that was a sure fire way to get pregnant, get rid of the baby things. After the long wait I am sure you will be excited to see all the new things that have come out!

  42. How lovely. We go in for big age gaps in my family too, and it means the older ones can take a real mentoring role with the younger ones – once they get a little bit older, obviously! Congratulations!

  43. Hooray, hooray!! All babies are precious, but when they don’t come easy, we realize how precious they truly are. So happy for you!

  44. Oh gosh, I’m just now reading this but how exciting for you and your family. Of course, buying all that stuff all over again isn’t always the most fun. But, then again baby gear buying is still fun, even buying again the 2nd time around because the things are just so adorable. Of course, the checkbook part of that isn’t as much fun.
I did the exact thing you did although I found out two weeks after getting rid of all my baby stuff, clothes and all. Cleared every bit of it out of the house. Then not long after my first doc visit because of the high risk I am the ultrasound showed not only was I pregnant BUT,I was having TWINS. Ack. Buying everything all over again and then times two. LOL

  45. We’re expecting a boy in January 2012. Our firstborn! And these booties, my o my, they look amazing. Great to read your story. And I laughed out loud when I read you had JUST taken out all the baby gear. Oh well, a lot has changed in 7 years and a cute boy in all pink… No, better to go shopping!
