While in Utah for the wedding, we stayed with Nadine & Tom, owners of the fabulous South Jordan quilt shop, Material Girls. Such a fun family! I pulled myself away twice to the shop and picked up fabrics for me, and this adorable beach cruiser embroidery pattern for my niece, Lily—Laura's girl.

Laura lived near us in AZ for a few years before moving out east. Lily spent a lot of time with Elijah and I back then—we MISS her!

Nadine's store is as adorable as she is—well nearly. And they carry a number of items you can't get anywhere else—such as this bicycle stitchery. Fortunately, it is available online.

There is so much going on around here. Today is the kids' last day of school; so, naturally, I'm attempting to get a summer's worth of work done today before the noise and chaos level rises. I'll share my secret if I succeed.

I may have to split my time more evenly between my home studio and my office in order to concentrate—depends on the project. Am I the only one who experiences a mixture of excitement and dread on the last day of school? And why is it I feel exactly the same way about the first day of school?

  1. I definitely dread summer – keeping two ornery boys occupied is a major undertaking. But I loooooooove the first day of school.

  2. I agree with you and Rachel. I have 3 ornery boys with too much testosterone! HELP. Here’s to hoping that summer will go better than everydays lately.

  3. my mother in law once told me that the first day of school-sending all 5 of her kids back, felt like christmas morning for her.
I feel the same. I like the summer (well, not the AZ heat) and enjoy doing fun, extra stuff with the kids, but I miss the structure to our day that school provides.
I’ve broken out in a itchy rash over the stress of how I am going to get client work done over the summer with 3 kids running around! Would love to hear your secret!

  4. When my boy was little, I dreaded the summer a bit, because he was very needy and it was so hard to get any work done. But now that he’s a teenager I LOVE it! He’s independent, we don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn, and I don’t have to hassle him about homework! I can’t wait! Don’t worry, it will get easier, but then, of course you’ll have to deal with the impossible teenage years (not easy). So, enjoy them while they are young and sweet. . . it’s always something.

  5. Heather, As a homeschool mom, I always looked at the last day of school, like most mom’s look at the first—FREEDOM! My summers have always been the time I planned huge work projects. Next year all my kiddoes get to attend school for the first time and I’ll know what the rest of the world feels like, lol. For the first time we are planning fun things to do for the summer instead of just being relived school is out.

  6. Heather–You are amazing with that camera. Nadine is going to love that photo of her charming embroidery pattern. I’ve got to get Lily a larger hoop so we can get serious. She is so excited about it.

  7. That embroidered pattern is just delightful! I love having the kids home for the holidays and always look forward to it (planning lots of crafty activities with them) – however after about the second week I can’t wait for them to get back again.
