Hungry Walls

HeatherBaileyOwl2

My walls are disturbingly void of artwork. I just don't like most
commercial artwork. It's not personal enough either. And I don't have
time to scout out great pieces on Etsy or make the artwork myself. Not
usually, anyhow, but I'm making an effort this month to at least get a
couple of pieces started and see where they lead me. Starting with this
owl.

Of course, he might sit on my drafting table for weeks, waiting to be
painted. I thought work would slow down a little during the holidays,
but holy cow, every licensee is looking for new product lines from me. I
really need to get an artist-type on staff.

I do have two awesome birdie prints from Laura Gunn that need framing. I should go get frames, huh? — like, right now while I'm thinking about it.

If you have art to recommend, certainly post a link. I have hungry walls.

  1. I sent a bunch of blank canvases to my nieces and nephews and asked them to paint anything that would remind me of home…hopefully they will send them soon so I can decorate my walls!

  2. http://www.etsy.com/shop/Geninne Unfortunately her shop is closed right now-she is off to Toronto to teach a workshop, her shop will open again in January. http://blogdelanine.blogspot.com/ Here is the link for her blog, you can get an idea of her work from here. She does beautiful animal & bird studies, mostly with paint on sometimes unusual objects. I just love her stuff. Check her out, she also does a desktop calendar for her blog readers, so every month we download some of her artwork directly to our desktops in the form of a calendar, waiting anxiously for Decembers.

  3. Use your children’s artwork. I bought a lot of different sizes & styles of frames, spray painted them all the same color and put original pieces in it. I know your daughter is an amazing artist – you could even enlarge them if you want. Just saying…..

  4. I don’t know if it qualifies as art or if it’s anwhere near what you are thinking but I do custom signs in any color/font/saying! Plus they can be double sided so if you get bored you can just flip it over for a fun change! You can see a few ideas here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ChippyPaintDesigns or since you are local you can visit me at: http://www.facebook.com/ChippyPaintDesigns You’ll even see some custom projects featuring Heather Bailey Fabrics!

  5. I too highly recommend Geninne (Carmen Wyant gave you the link). Her work is fantastic and I think you’d love it.

I have a Geninne print that I adore, can’t wait to buy another when her shop opens up again.

  7. It’s really tough recommending art to people unless you know them incredibly well, but here’s what I have around the house. Most of the art on my walls are silk screened posters for bands that I love. So I have quite a few posters for The White Stripes and various other Jack White related bands, and Neko Case. What I find works best for me in this regard is to pick up the poster for the show I attended or keep an eye on my favorite print Artists. Favorites include Rob Jones, Print Mafia, and Daniel Danger. Society6 has a huge range of prints, including this great one from one of my favorite tv shows of all time, Twin Peaks.

20×200 is also a great place to find art. They operate with the idea that everyone should have access to art, that it isn’t something only attainable to the super rich. So they do a lot of small editions of prints by lesser known artists and usually have interesting stuff.

So, yeah. Most of The artwork I have is silkscreen posters, but I also have a painting that my boyfriend’s dad painted in 1964, a lithograph my friend found at an estate sale and had framed for me, and one or two copies of things out of old sewing books that I framed.
    Good luck with your search!
